Ice Bowl 05 Wrap   Message List

Discsports in Southern California ran the Ice Bowl in Paradise charity event at
lovely and exciting Elysian Park again this year. Exciting? Yes – it turned out
that way. Winners in three divisions had to break ties and several others were
decided in the last few holes. Beth Verish edged Kimbra Carnaghe to nab the
chocolate in the Open Women and the Advanced Am division ended 36 holes
with a 3-way tie that went to Lawrence Halili in the playoff. The Open division
ended with a tie at 99 between Sweeney and Crabtree. The only problem – a
silly scorecard error put a revised score of 101 on Kyle's card. The TD's
hands were tied on this – it is the correct score plus two strokes. Pat decided
to play it off with Kyle and although Mr. Sweeney will officially get his point
– I
believe Kyle Crabtree won that playoff. PLEASE – check your cards before
they get turned in.

Frank Feliz broke Chris Canning's streak and went home with the Ching.
Jesse Chambless continued Santa Maria's winning ways with his victory in
Mini Accuracy while Homer Vazira's upside down strategy paid off in Disc
Shuffleboard. Billy Carnaghe was "Closest to" which got him one of the new
2005 PDGA Course Directories while Virgil Phillips once again won
chocolate as the biggest donor to the Foodbank. The big winners were the
Los Angeles Regional Foodbank and DISC (80 members so far in 2005).

Not only did we have that super man Pat Shea on hand, but we were lucky to
once again have a great field of women play the Ice Bowl. The Tri County
area had more than 10 players drive down and we also had deaf disc golfers
Dustin Warren and Chad Leonard join us. John Babin brought his Burbank
contingent with him and long time DISC volunteer Nick Yermilov played his
first PDGA event! The field was again full and although we managed to
accommodate those who were already on the waiting list, we had to turn
down several who arrived that morning hoping to play (reminder - "avoid
disappointment, sign up early").

The work of many was apparent, but Chris Ginnaven, Homer Vazira and Cliff
Towne deserve special mention as does Jesse Williams for his help and
Peggy Kelly and the Parks staff for having the area looking so good. Thanks
also to Beth Verish, Suzette Simons, Tom LaTorre and Tita Ugalde of So Cal
Disc Golf for their help before and during the event and to all who helped lug
targets around and run Disc Arcade. Please thank our sponsors, Discovering
the World and Trader Joes. Give them the business! Also, So Cal Disc Golf
generously donated their $2 per player sanctioning fee back to the Foodbank.
Congratulations to all the participants – you have done well and mom can be
proud of you. With $931 going to the LA Regional Foodbank and the balance
in membership donations to DISC, a total of $2108 was raised! We will have
the full results posted in the "Files" section up at www.discsports.org (this
goes to our new yahoo group - please sign up to get DISC notices) and may
also be posted at www.socaldiscgolf.org Contact Cliff Towne at
coursedirectory@... if you are interested in helping DISC in our
mission to promote disc sports in the area.
