In case you didn't know - the skinny 5'10" guy from the And1 streetball squad
called The Professor who is well known for his outstanding ball handling
actually can dunk! And right, he is white!
As many outstanding ball players Grayson Boucher aka The Professor has a fix
workout he sticks to.
"Everday I'm in the gym for a minimum of 2 hours. I've been getting up at 5am
everyday lately knocking my basketball workouts out early in the morning. Then I
run 2 miles and lift for about an hour. Too me, whatever you put into working on
your game is what you get out of it. Its all about your time investment and
dedication. When I go to the gym its not going to ever be some sweet ass
workout. You can't just go to the gym and shoot around casually and expect to
improve. I get up at least 500 everytime I'm in there and go hard with full
court dribbling drills, then end the workout with some free throws. When I run 2
miles I try and keep one hard pace the whole time. Right now I get in 2 miles at
1330, which is tough to get done every morning, but when you start seeing
results you begin to like it and go harder. I used to lift for bulk and got
heavy at one point and found that quickness is more important for me then bulk
weight. This year I'm concentrating on working my legs harder then I ever have
before, because my goal for this upcoming season is to dunk on the regular." -
The Professor
In case you ask yourself which exercises will make your legs stronger, here are
a couple:
Jump rope:
Almost every NBA player uses this "old" exercise. Jumping rope is a great way to
build stamina, and work on your leg strength. In addition, it builds jumping
ability (explosiveness, calf strength, etc.).
Wall sits and squats:
These exercises will help you build leg strength, which is a key component of
athletic fitness, and therefore jumping ability. Remember to only use a weight
that is comfortable for you, and to always have a trainer or training partner
work out with you.
But remember that vertical leap is part leg strength and part explosiveness. And
the explosiveness part is the more important of the two. Just like The Professor
said it, it's not about the size of your leg muscles, or how much weight you can
put up in the gym. It's about your athletic ability, coordination, and your
ability to explode up and off the ground.

Finding ways to jump higher could mean you making that slam dunk, spiking that
volley ball, or making that touchdown catch. Moments of glory that dedicated
training and precision have been gearing you up for. Possessing that ability to
jump a little higher can mean you making an impact in the sporting limelight.
Most physical sports involve an element of jumping skills, and even those which
may not, having the agility that training for jumping will naturally bring, can
add good all round fitness and health benefits. Good health, through diet and
exercise is an important factor in life and has its role in ways to jump higher
too.
Specific, targeted training can provide you with the skills to reach for those
few extra inches in jump height. The power of jumping comes from deep within the
legs, essentially the energy generated by the calves and thighs. There is a
certain amount of explosive energy, the speed at which the muscles react that
determines how high you will elevate yourself.
There are other elements as well, such as controlling the powerful movements,
focusing that power into the jump which the thighs and inner abs do. The arms,
with their swinging motion propel the body upwards, leading the way to the sky
and so it is important that they are performing at an optimum level&nbsp; too.
Some good training exercises when looking for ways to jump higher, come from
initial body workouts such as jogging and skipping rope. Skipping rope is a much
preferred training exercise for many professional athletes as it can help in
sprinting and developing flexibility in the ankle and calf muscles.
Toe raises, rolling back and forth up onto your toes is a great strength
building exercises for the toes themselves, for adding balance and stretching
out the calf muscles. Deep knee squats, keeping the back straight and slowly
bending is a great control and strength exercise for the thighs. Jumping high
from a squatting position is a wonderful exercise for the entire body and just
for improving those vertical leaping skills. Upon landing, immediately enter
into another squat and propel yourself back up into a jump again. This repeated
action is one which will stretch and give all of the jumping muscles a great
workout, and help to make you a better jumper.

are still some persisting myths that make athletes hesitant about starting a
program. The following is an explanation of four common myths debunked.
1. Creatine isn't safe/is illegal/shouldn't be used in a workout.
Did you know creatine is produced naturally in the body? Most professional
athletes use creatine to help them get the most out of their workout routines.
It's completely legal, and is very effective. With that said, do your own
research to decide what's best for you. You'll probably learn that as long as
you take the correct dosages, maintain a healthy diet, and drink plenty of
water, that creatine will be most useful to you in your search for faster,
better results.
2. Protein shakes will stunt your growth.
If this were true, then eating 4 cans of tuna a day would do the same. You are
free to only receive protein from whole foods such as chicken; protein shakes
just makes getting the protein a little easier. Protein is a necessary part of
any diet.
3. Even though my muscles are sore, it's okay to continue my workout.

less frequent responses in cricket and football.
Even if it's for the celebratory leap in the air, finding ways to increase
vertical height can prove to be beneficial to your overall health and skill
sets. The training involved in exercising for jumping allows the participant to
receive good overall cardiovascular workout, as well as increased agility,
endurance and strength.
Vertical jumping skills are controlled largely by the thighs. Along with inner
abs, they are the major players when it comes to power movements within the body
and so, by training these to be efficient and powerful at the same time, they,
in return have the potential to deliver controlled, accurate jumps.
The calf muscles also play a pivotal role in leaping in the air, so stretching
and strengthening these are paramount to keeping the legs in good shape and
generating explosive speed and velocity which will produce a better jump. When
these muscles are stretched out and healthy, then better circulation runs
through them, improving and maintaining healthy operation.
Forgetting never to warm up, jogging is a good way to work the entire body, as
well as the leg muscles and joints. This, along with skipping rope are good ways
to warm up and add to the agility and suppleness of the entire body too.
Along with good cardio workouts, there are other factors that come into play
when learning ways to increase vertical height on your jumps. The biceps for
example, along with the shoulder muscles come into play with the swinging action
created by the arms. The arms lead the way into the air when jumping, so these
are important parts to strengthen and train, along with the often forgotten
toes.
Being the final contact point with the ground before jumping fully, any extra
force which can be created by them through strength training may just give you
that extra lift. Extra lift than can propel you head and shoulders above your
fellow competitors.
