I work from home and have time in my weekday mornings for a 1 - 2 hour
trail run. I would consider myself at a beginner level. I was
wondering if there is anyone that would want to join. I feel that it
would be safer to run with someone than just by myself.

Title:   Thursday trail run

Date:   Thursday July 31, 2008
Time:   5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Location:   Lookout, Beaver Brook option.
Notes:   The early group meets at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm.

There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live/work near downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at 5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives. The link below has a map.
http://tinyurl.com/5d35nb

Run notes: Based on feedback from last week, we'll run the Beaver Brook option. The start of the run is the same as we normally do. For the Beaver Brook (BB) trail, 0.2mi past Windy Saddle, stay right at the trail junction. This junction is well marked. Shortly after the start of the BB trail, you cross a couple of boulder fields. On the other side, it's a fun, very runable, rolling trail. This is an out-and-back run. Please bring a watch and use time to determine when to turn around. You'll be about 5-10 min faster coming down. If faster runners are coming back, please turn around so that we don't have to wait a long time for you.

DTR runs are not races. They are meant to be "group" runs. Please stop and regroup, with similarly paced runners, at key junctions.

Please park to fit as many cars as possible in the dirt lot - park as close together as practical around the outside, then make a couple of rows in the middle. There's more parking at the park, just down the road.

For driving directions, route maps, and more info about DTR, please go to:
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com

Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner after the run. We pick a nearby restaurant at the end of the run. Bring dry and warm clothes for after the run.

Hi all,

The night run this Tuesday will be at Green Mountain in Lakewood. We
will meet at the Rooney Road lot. We will run for about 1 to 1.5 hours
at a casual pace.

Directions:

Take C-470 to the new Alameda exit. Turn right and take Alameda.
Alameda will veer right and turn into Rooney Road. Go about a mile and
park in the paved lot on the right. If you get to the motocross track
you have gone to far.

Don't forget your light.

See you there.

This year's Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run is FREE. There will not be an official race. Instead, there will be a fun run / unofficial race.
  • No sign-ups. Just show up.
  • No fees (except for the park pass). Carpool to save gas and park fee (see website for carpool info).
  • Limited aid - I expect to have water in two places, but you'll need your own bottle. Carry more if you want.
  • Limited course markings. The course isn't hard to follow. Bring a map. I hope to have signs at most of the key turns. We should have several experienced guides at going different paces.
  • A great course and great training.

You can run hard like a race if you want, or just run easy. There probably will be several guided groups at different paces. I'll be leading a group at about a 1:45 pace (fairly hard, course record is 1:31).

It takes place at Golden Gate Canyon State Park, in Gilpin County, 15mi W of Golden. The course is challenging. The course is 12.7mi, with 2,500' of climbing, between 8,400' and 9,500'. There's a bail-out option shortening the route to ~10mi, and cutting out the biggest and last major climb. It's also very fun and scenic. You run through aspen and pine forests, and alpine meadows, with views of the continental divide. Bring a camera.

This will take place on Sunday, July 27, at 8:00am. Directions, carpool, course, and other info is at my web site.

I hope to see lots of DTRs and other runners there. Feel free to invite/bring others. Bring some food and we'll have a picnic after the run.

I need a teammate for a 125 mile race through the Colorado Rockies,
August 25-30, 2008. This race is going to be AMAZING. Check it out -
http://transrockies.com/transrockiesrun/index.htm.

I am a 28 y/o male from Atlanta in good shape: 2:46 marathon PR; 2:48
2008 Boston Marathon. My original teammate is struggling with an injury
and cannot participate.

This year from August 25-30, up to 150 teams of two will take on the
Colorado Rockies for a running experience like no other. During the six
days of the GORE-TEXTM TransRockies Run, runners from all over the
world will run, eat and live together as they cover 125 miles of
spectacular scenery, fully supported by a dedicated and professional
Event Team who will look after all aspects of their food,
accommodations and on-course support.

Please contact me if you or someone you know might be interested.

Hi there,

I'm on a Wild West Relay team and we've just lost a runner. The race
is in two weeks. We are looking for a runner to fill his slot. We
also have another runner who would prefer not to run because of some
family problems so we really could take 2 more runners.

If you haven't heard of the WWR, check out www.wildwestrelay.com.
We'll start in Ft. Collins and end up in Steamboat Springs. This is
my first year but my boyfriend ran last year and had a blast.

We are a mostly for fun team (but we do want to finish and not get
swept off the course! :). Our runners range from 7 min milers to 11
minute milers (that'd be me).

If you are interested, please let me know. I'm also doing the
Colorado Relay in September with mostly the same team and we need a
runner for that one also.

Take care and happy running!

Greetings all! I need a teammate for a 125 mile race through the
Colorado Rockies, August 25-30, 2008. This race is going to be AMAZING.
Check it out - http://transrockies.com/transrockiesrun/index.htm.

I am a 28 y/o male in good shape: 2:46 marathon PR; 2:48 2008 Boston
Marathon. My original teammate is struggling with an injury and cannot
participate. I have been very dedicated to my training and should be in
good shape to push it up those hills.

I am super-stoked about this race and hoping to find a teammate to run
a pretty competitive race – HOWEVER, I am flexible.

If you or someone you know might be interested, please contact me.

THANKS!

Some of us will be training on the Leadville 100 course this coming weekend of 19th-20th with another group from the Springs if anyone is interested in joining us up there.  These will be long, slow runs just to be on the course.  You will have to carry your food with you but can refill water at Twin Lakes (gas station, have money), Halfmoon (water pump in campground), Fish Hatchery (garden hose).  Of course if more people go we can drop of cars with food in them at these locations and use them as aid stations along the route so we don’t have to carry so much.  My cell phone is 720-883-2946 if you need to get a hold of me for more information but may not have reception once up in Leadville unless I happen to be in town.  I am going up on Friday after work.  The plan for Friday-Sunday is below.  Let me know if you are interested in joining us for any of it.

Friday- Leaving around 6pm to drive to Leadville (thinking that we will be camping at Sugarloaf camp ground)

Saturday- Run Winfield to Mayqueen, starting 7am from Winfield.  Mileage is around 39 miles and expect to take 8 hours or so.

Sunday- Climbing Mount Massive via Southwest slopes route, expect to take 5-6 hours.  http://www.14ers.com/routemain.php?route=mass2&peak=Mt.%20Massive

Title:   Thursday trail run

Date:   Thursday July 17, 2008
Time:   5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Location:   Lair 'o the Bear
Notes:   The early group meets at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm. Meet at the trail head, at the W end of the parking lot.

For those of you who live/work downtown, we have set up a place to meet so we can carpool to the Thursday runs. We will meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at 5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives. The link below has a map. See you there!
http://tinyurl.com/5d35nb

Run notes: This is an out-and-back run. Please bring a watch and use time to determine when to turn around. The group will decide how long to run, usually 1:00-1:15. It's faster on the way back (downhill), so turn around a little longer than half your run time. For example, if you're running 1:10, turn around at about 37-40 minutes.

For driving directions, route maps, and more info about DTR, please go to: http://dtr.runuphillracing.com

Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner after the run. We pick a nearby restaurant at the end of the run. Bring dry and warm clothes for after the run. It cools quickly in the evening.

Ok everybody, the Sunday run planned at Berthoud Pass has been moved to Herman's Gulch.

Adam suggested that to avoid the chance of somebody getting lost that we do Herman's Gulch instead since we have so many people.  I agree.  This trail is very straightforward, just straight up and there is no way to get lost.

Location & Time: We will meet at the same time at the Stegasouras park and ride at I-70 and Matthew Winters at 9am on Sunday.
We will carpool to the last exit before Loveland pass, west of Denver off of Interstate 70, exit 3 miles west of Bakerville at the 218 exit.
Trailhead is right off the exit on the north side.   You can see it from I-70.
We will shoot for the same times, if you want to meet at the Herman Gulch trailhead, be there around 9:45-10.   I would like to be on the trail by 10 to avoid any thunderstorms.

This trail is spectacular, I have hiked it before, although not to the very top.  It is about a 3 mile climb to a lake and then we can run as long as we want on the Continental Divide trail.  I am very excited because I always wanted to run this.

Hope everybody is ok with this.   Please join us if you need a high altitude run, looking forward to seeing everybody who responded and more.

John

Happy Hump Day,

I was planning a trip to Leadville this weekend to race and Dan is also going along to climb.  Thought I would see if anyone else would like to join us for an adventure in the mountains this weekend.  We are doing different things on Saturday but will camp and climb together after that.  The plan is outlined below.  Let me know if you want to join us or meet us up there, we are leave early Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening.

Saturday:

1.       Meet at Morrison exit at 4:45 am for the drive to Leadville.

2.       Drop Shad off, Shad is doing the High Mountain 50K run, lots of this is on the Leadville 100 course, if interested in pacing this section (which is basically the Fish Hatchery to Mayqueen section over Sugarloaf Mountain) sign up for the 25K and run with me the first lap or do the whole 50K if you are up for it.  Sign up here http://www.hminet.org/short-programs/high-mountain-trail-run

3.       Dan is going to climb Mount Elbert while I am running, so if you are just interested in climbing you can tag along with him.  We will meet back up in the mid afternoon around 3 pm to go find a place to make camp depending on what we decide to climb on Sunday.

Sunday:

1. Climb either Massive or Yale.  Might do Yale because it is half the distance, climbers will be tired from Elbert and I will be tired from the run.  We will decide later in the week or on Saturday as a group.  We want everyone to be happy with what we go and climb.  This climb will be at a slower pace and will be hiking and not running (active recovery for me).

Hope some of you can join us.

Shad

We are on(neighbors can watch the dogs).  I can drive.  See you at Stagasaurus at 4:45am Saturday.  I'll bring my tent so you don't have to hear the snoring.  Theres room for more if you know anyone that needs punishing.

Newbies are welcome to any run. Bring a route map with you. Even if
you're following someone else, following a map is a good way for you
to learn the trails. Then, next time, you can help guide other newbies.

Note that if you're new to trail/mountain running, it's a lot
different than running flat. We run up some steep and long hills, on
over some rocky trails. Use the rating system to see how difficult
each trail is. The trails are rated 1-5, with 5 being the hardest, in
the following categories:
P = Physical Difficulty (hills)
T = Technical difficulty (rocks)
N = Navigational difficulty (e.g., trail signs, number of intersecting
trails)

If you're not used to running hills, you'll probably be a lot slower
than you expect. The key is not to over exert yourself on the climbs,
especially early. Most of our runs start uphill. Try to maintain the
same effort level on a climb as you would on flat ground. If you don't
run flats like intervals (e.g., varying hard/easy efforts), then why
would you do so on hills.

Running downhill efficiently takes practice and confidence. Confidence
comes with practice. Try to keep your weight forward and your stride
rate high. If it's really steep, rocky or loose, shorten your stride,
but still keep it quick. Easier said than done. The tendency for new
trail runners is to lean back, land on your heels, brake with each
stride, and tense up. This is the opposite of what you should be
doing. However, as I said, it takes practice to build the skills and
confidence.

White Ranch is one of our longer runs. Most of us will be out
1:15-1:30. It'll be hot, so you may want to carry water. Also, bring
warm and dry clothes to change into after the run.

If you're going to the party, expect to stay until 9-10pm. If you're
just doing the run, we'll be done 6:30-6:45pm. If you're carpooling,
work that out with other riders at the carpool location.

Bring food if you can. If you're not able to this time and still want
to come to the party, please do so. This is a great way to meet the
other DTRs. Often, we don't have a lot of time to socialize at the
runs. Most of the time we don't have parties. However, many of us go
out to dinner together after the runs (location chosen at the end of
the run). We encourage you to join us for those too.

In the future, please send your questions about DTR to
DenverTrailRunners-owner@yahoogroups.com
There, a group of moderators gets the messages and you're more likely
to get a (or several) responses more quickly.

Also, please go back and read the FAQ/Info page, maps and other stuff
on the DTR site, and old messages on the YahooGroups site. we built
that site so that we wouldn't have to take a lot of time (which few of
us have extra of) to answer a lot of similar questions. DTR is all
volunteer and free. I realize that some of the info on the DTR site,
like some of the FAQs, is out of date. We're working to update the
content and style of the site. Please be patient. Please let us know
if there's something in particular you'd like to see on the site or
that needs to be fixed.

Allowing members to post is new for DTR. We're trying to balance out
the openness of allowing more postings and the increased group
activity that hopefully brings, with keeping down the volume of mail.
Many DTRs have expressed concern about increasing mail volume.
