When: Thu, May 1, 5:30pm (early group), 6:15pm (main group). You are
welcome to run with either group.
The early group is smaller - from 1 to about a dozen. The runners are
generally mid pack, from about high 40s to high 50s 10km (road) speed.
The main group is larger - typically from 10-20 during the colder
months, sometimes more than 40 during the warmer months. There is a
wide variety of speeds, from mid 30s to 60+ 10km (road) speed.
What: This could be a road or trail run, depending on the weather. If
the trails are dry, we'll run into Matthews Winters park. If they're
wet, we'll run the hilly roads around Red Rocks.
We'll run for about an hour. If you want to run longer, you can start
with the early group, and finish with the main group, like Jeff
normally does. There are various route options depending on your speed
and how long you want to go. Use the link below to find the map and
directions.
Dinner: Everyone is welcome to join us for dinner after the run. We'll
pick a restaurant at the end of the run, usually somewhere in Morrison.
This Thursday's run will be at Green Mtn, Rooney Road lot. The early
group will start at 5:30pm. The main group will start at 6:00pm. EARLY
START!! We'll be starting early for the next few weeks to take
advantage of the fading light.
Directions: There's a change to the driving directions. From either
directions, take C-470 to the new Alameda exit. Go W from the offramp
~200m. Turn right on Rooney Rd, ~1/3mi, to the lot. The directions on
the site work as back-up, in case of traffic.
Run Notes: Sunset is at 6:41pm; Twilight is at 7:08pm. Please adjust
your route to finish by 7pm. We don't want to have to go search for
anyone after it gets dark. All of the routes finish on the wide,
service road, which should be easy to follow as it gets dark.
About 3/4mi after the start, at GM1, the faster runners will take a
left up the canyon ~200m, then right. This will take us onto a trail
that parallels the main trail before rejoining after 1+ mile. This
trail is about the same length, but is hillier, and takes longer.
Slower and intermediate runners, please don't follow us. stick to the
main route.
Also, the trail listed as the Utah trail on the directions, has been
renamed as the Hayden trail.
Please use the links below for route descriptions and maps, driving
directions, and more info.
DTR runs are not races. We'll start together, then spread out and
naturally form smaller sub-groups once we're into the run. Please stop
and regroup, with similarly paced others, at key intersections. We ask
experienced DTRs to please help guide those newer to the trail.
Remember to bring warm and dry clothing for after the run. It cools
quickly once the sun goes down.
Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who
live/work near downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by
Denver West High School, at 5:10 each Thursday. We will alternate who
drives. The link below has a map. http://tinyurl.com/5d35nb
This Thursday's run is at South Table Mtn. Meet in the NREL visitors
lot. The early group starts at 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:00pm. If you're running with the main group, please arrive early so
that you are ready to start running at 6:00pm. Sunset is at 6:30pm;
twilight ends at 6:57pm. We want to be able to get as much of the run
in as possible before it gets dark.
Please refer to the links at the bottom of this message for driving
directions, route maps and descriptions, and other info about DTR.
Run Notes: There are not changing facilities or bathrooms at the
start. If needed, use facilities at the Denver West shopping center,
just across I70.
If you're new to this run, please print and bring the map. We'll run
straight out to the Golden Stairs (aka Castle Rock) and back via the
blue line. Faster runners may take a longer route back. There are no
trail signs, few landmarks, and lots of trails. It can be easy to get
lost. Please note the surroundings at key junctions on the way out.
Experienced runners, please help guide those new to the trail.
If you're not comfortable running at night, and don't have a light,
you may want to turn around early. Some of you may want to consider
bringing lights. For more info about lighting, read the great info
Jeff put together http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DenverTrailRunners/message/1043

This week's run is at Bear Creek Lake Park. The early group starts at
5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:00pm.
Parking notes: Meet in the large, dirt lot, at the corner of Rooney
and Morrison roads. Once the perimeter spots are full, several cars
can fit in the middle. Additional parking is available alongside
Rooney road, just up from the dirt lot. Bathroom is across Rooney rd,
in the gas station.
Run Notes: If you're new to this run, please print and bring the map.
BCLP can be confusing. Please stop and regroup at key junction, and,
if you know the trails there, help guide the newer runners.
We run counter clockwise. Faster runners usually climb up Mt. Carbon,
and loop around the back side of the dam. If you're not up with the
faster runners, please don't follow them up Mt. Carbon. Instead,
please stay low and take the road across the base, on the W side of
the dam.
If you're not comfortable running at night and don't have a light,
once you make it to the base of Mt. Carbon, you can take roads all the
way back. Sunset is at 6:19pm; twilight ends at 6:46pm. Some of you
may want to consider bringing lights. For more info about lighting,

This week's run is at Lookout/Chimney Gulch. The early group starts at
5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:00pm.
Parking notes: Meet in the dirt lot, at the first horseshoe curve,
just past the pillars. There's a bathroom at the park, just down from
the pillars.
Run Notes: Lookout offers both trail and road routes. Over the winter,
sometimes, we'll go up via the trail, and down via the road. This is a
good option for those without lights or uncomfortable on trails at
night. Road traffic is fairly light. Sunset is at 6:10, twilight ends
at 6:37, so everyone should be able to make it up the trail to Windy
Saddle before dark. This is an out-and-back route, so use your watch
to determine when to turn around. The road route is ~0.8mi longer
to/from Windy Saddle, so take that into account when judging your turn
around time. You might want to bring a light even if you are going to
run the road. At least wear reflective gear. Lighting is as much about
being seen as it is about seeing.

This week's run is at South Valley Park. The early group meets at
5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm. Please allow for extra
driving time in the snow.
Run Notes: This is one of our flatter runs. We'll determine whether to
do the the hogback option, or our normal route on the Grazing Elk trail.
The Grazing Elk loop doesn't have a good short option. For that, I
suggest either going only part way onto the loop then back, or some
variation of the hogback route. There should be DTR regulars who can
help guide the different groups.
For the Grazing Elk, normal route, refer to the map on the DTR site.
Expect either some snow a few inches expected tomorrow), or hard
dirt/mud. You shouldn't need traction devices, but it's up to you. A
few inches of snow makes for great footing.
Remember to bring warm and dry clothing for after the run.
Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. At the end of
the run, the group will pick a nearby restaurant.
DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly for
the first several minutes. Once we're into the run, we'll spread out
and tend to naturally form smaller sub-groups by pace. Please stop and
regroup, at key intersections. Those of you familiar with the trails,
please help lead/guide the sub-groups for the other runners.

This week's run is at Red Rocks. The early group meets at 5:30pm; the
main group starts at 6:15pm. Meet at the Trading Post.
Run notes: The trails will probably be wet and either slushy or muddy.
That means we'll probably stick to the hilly, paved roads. We may
venture onto the Matthews Winters trails if there's still enough snow
cover. You're welcome to stick to the roads even if some of us hit the
trails. The RR roads offer a variety of ways to combine different
loops to run almost any length. It'll be the day before the full moon,
so you may be able to run without a light on the road. If you are not
familiar with the area, please review the map in advance.
DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to

This week's run is at Red Rocks Park. The early group meets at 5:30pm; the main
group starts at 6:15pm. Meet at the Trading Post.
Run notes: If by some chance the trails get muddy we will run the roads, but
since the weather is predicted to be slightly below freezing all day I'm
thinking this unlikely. The roads do offer some good, long hill workouts. If you
are not familiar with the trails, please review the map in advance.

This Thursday's run is at South Valley Park, in Ken Caryl. The early group meets at 5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:15.
Run Notes: We will run the hogback route, not the regular DTR route on our web site. The Grazing Elk trail is closed during the spring because of an elk herd. Read the course notes below. And, if you are not familiar with the trails, please review the map in advance. Maps are available at the trail head, and online at http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R19.htm
Start on the Coyote Song trail, up the hill from the gazebo. Continue as it curves right, and rolls down along the top of the meadow. Take the next left, after ~1/2mi, up the short, steep, Lyons Back Trail. Just past the top, go right at the fork. Remember this point for the return. Run down the hill to the
junction with the wide, Cathy Johnson Trail. From this junction, we will take different routes - short and medium taking a sharp left, long veering right.
Short: Take a sharp left up the CJ trail ~ ½mi. At the next junction, before the trail crests, take a sharp left. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~4.25mi.
Medium: Take a sharp left up the CJ trail. Continue up the wide path over the crest, and down the other side to the road. Turn around and head back up the trail and over the crest. ~150m after the crest, take a right onto a single track. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork
mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~5.3mi
Long: At the CJ trail, stay right and follow the wide path down to Deer Creek Cyn Rd. Turn around and return back up CJ trail past the two trail junctions on the left, over the crest, and down to the road. Turn around and return up the trail and over the crest. ~150m after the crest, take a right onto a single track. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~6.1mi
Extra Long: To add extra, on the return, at the bottom of Lyons Back, go left ~0.4mi. Take a sharp right for .25mi. Take the next right at the bench onto
Swallow Trail, rolling up back to the start. Adds ~¾mi to any of the routes above.

This week's run is at White Ranch. Meet at the lower lot. The early group meets
at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm.
Run notes: This is one of our longer runs, 1:20 or so. The climbs/descents are
long, and sometimes very steep. There is some shade on the upper trails, but
much of the lower sections are exposed.
All routes will start up Belcher Hill to the "new" connector trail, called
Whippletree. From there:
Short - Go left at Longhorn, stay left at Shorthorn, and then left again down
Belcher Hill back to the start. ~5mi.
Interm1 - Right on Longhorn, left at next junction onto Shorthorn, continue to
Belcher Hill, then left down the hill. ~6.1mi.
Interm2 - Right onto Longhorn, stay right at next junction (still Longhorn),
left at Maverick, then left at Belcher Hill down to the start. ~7.5mi
Long - Stay right on Longhorn past Maverick. just past Maverick, go left at the
fork, past the bathrooms, to the upper lot. Then, take Sawmill, to Belcher, back
down. ~7.9mi
Extra Long - Towards the top, the faster runners may decide to head over to
Wranglers Run befoer the upper lot, and/or to the top of Belcher Hill after the
upper lot.
DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to keep the

Where: Dedisse and Alderfer trails. Meet at Evergreen Lake. The early group will
meet at 5:30. We'll push the start time back for the main group until 6:30pm.
Please arrive a little early so that you're ready to start on time.
Party to follow at Warren and Brooke Kish's, just up the road from the lake.
Warren will make pasta, both meat and veggie sauces available. DTR will provide
plates, napkins, utensils, cups, etc. Please bring salads, side dishes,
desserts, snacks, drinks, etc. If you can't bring anything this time, it's still
OK to show up. There's always plenty of food. It's a great chance to meet the
group without breathing hard. Bring your swim suit if you would like to relax
in their hot tub.
Directions to Lake House: Take I-70 to Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74 exit, #252.
Follow hwy 75 ~6.5mi to the lake. The road curves left at the lake. Just before
the curve, go right on Upper Bear Creek Rd 1/4mi, then left to the lake parking
lot. Meet by the porta-potties. Info and a map on Alderfer/Three Sisters park
are available at http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R5.htm
Directions to the party: 30424 Upper Bear Creek Road. One mile up from the lake
on the left. Pass mile marker 1 on wood post on right. "Moody's" mail box on
right. Some trees on left, then a bunch of mail boxes. One has KISH on it and
30424. They may add some sneakers to the mail box. Make left on dirt road. Pass
first house. About 100 feet further up dirt road is house. (303)216-9712.
There's limited parking, so we'll have to carpool up from the lake. The lot at
the lake stays open until 10pm.
It cools of quickly in the canyon, so please bring warm and dry clothes for
after the run.

If anyone wants to mountain bike before the run, meet me at the Lake House a little after 5pm, ready to start at 5:15. We'll ride for 50-60 min, leaving enough time to change and put our bikes away for the run. We'll ride at a moderate effort.
++++++++++ Here are the suggested routes for this week's run. Text below. Text and map attached.
Head out the parking lot to
the road. Go left up the road ~200m; stay single file to the far left. Just past the golf course lot, look for a
trail on the left. Take the trail down, across
the bridge, then straight across onto the trail up the hill. This is the Dedisse Trail.
Dedisse winds around the edge of the golf course, climbs up to the ridge, then gradually drops to the Alderfer trails – blue circle. Remember this junction for the
return. I’ll flag it for the main group. All will go right at this junction. If you're hiking, you may want to turn around at or before this junction.
Blue arrows – all routes.
Short, Green – Then stay left, around the fairly flat loop to the
lower Alderfer lot. Regroup, then continue around on the Hidden Fawn trail. The
Hidden Fawn trail will climb up to the Dedisse trail junction. Regroup. Make a sharp right back onto the Dedisse trail, and retrace the beginning of the route back to the Lakehouse.
Intermediate, Yellow – Then take the first right and climb the Sisters
trail. It’s a steep climb, but not that long. Continue down the other side.
Stay left on the Sisters trail. Regroup at the Ponderosa trail junction. Go
left, back up and over the hill, and down to the Sisters trail. Go right to the
lower lot, then stay left on Hidden Fawn, back to Dedisse.
Long, Red – Climb the Sisters trail. Stay
left at the next junction. Go right on Ponderosa, to Silver Fox. Look for the
yellow house and road, and head for the dirt lot. Regroup at the bathrooms by the
upper lot. From the bathrooms, head back to the E, then stay right to the
Ponderosa Trail, down to the lower lot. Then, follow the same route as the
others, around Hidden Fawn, to Dedisse, and back.
Extra Long, Purple – Follow the Intermediate
and Long route up and over Sisters. On the way down, take the first right onto
Bearberry. Follow this around to Bluebird, and to the upper lot. Then, we’ll
either follow the long route down Ponderosa, or cross the road and take Ranch
View down to the lower lot. I will help guide this group.

To join, leave or change addresses, please follow the instructions at the bottom of this message, and at the Yahoo site. If you are changing your e-mail address, please unsubscribe from your old address, then subscribe from your new address.
To send a message to the group, use the Post option
from the Yahoo site, or send a message to DenverTrailRunners@yahoogroups.com. All messages are reviewed by the DTR moderators before they are sent out. This means that there may be a delay before your messages is posted.
Messages should be about trail running (e.g., starting a new group run, carpooling to a race, looking for training partners). For road running, please use our partner group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Denver_runners/
If you have additional questions (please check the FAQs and other info on the web site, and read some recent messages at the Yahoo

We usually suggest several routes of different length at each run. The different
routes are designed so that runners of different abilities can start and finish
at about the same time. Please pick the appropriate route for you. Don't
necessarily follow the people in front of you. The sub-groups/routes are
approximately defined as follows:
Extra-Long: sub-40 10km (road race time, not the pace run at DTR runs)
Long: low-mid 40s 10km
Intermediate: mid 40s to low 50s 10km
Short: mid 50s+ 10km

Please ignore the previous message about the Thu night run (I'm not sure why this didn't go out on Tuesday). We'll be running the hogback routes, detailed below and attached, not those on the dtr web site. There is no carpool, although you can contact John directly if interested (info below).
========== This Thursday's run is at South Valley Park, in Ken Caryl. The early group meets at 5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:15.
Sunset is at 7:06; civil twilight ends at 7:33. That means that it'll be pretty dark by 7:15 or so. Please arrive early so that we can start on time, so that everyone can get there run in before it is dark.
Lance will be the starter.

Notes: We will run the hogback route, not the regular DTR route on our

onto a single track. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of
Lyons Back and the fork
mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the
bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~5.3mi
On the far side of the hogback, there are two out-and-backs on the CJ trail. Most of the middle pack runners won't have time to hit both ends and finish before dark. Please pay attention to the trails as you run so that you know where to cut back over the hogback. If you go down to the road at 4 (on the map), please take the sharp left turn at 5, before cresting the hill, and don't continue to 6.
Long:
At the CJ trail, stay right and follow the wide path down to Deer Creek
Cyn Rd. Turn around and return back up CJ trail past the two trail
junctions on the left, over the crest, and down to the road. Turn
around and return up the trail and over the crest. ~150m after the
crest, take a right onto a single track. Follow the trail rolling back
up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork mentioned above. At the fork,
take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a
right and return to the start. ~6.1mi
Extra Long:
To add extra, on the return, at the bottom of Lyons Back, go left
~0.4mi. Take a sharp right for .25mi. Take the next right at the bench
onto
Swallow Trail, rolling up back to the start. Adds ~¾mi to any of the
routes above.
DTR
runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to keep
the group together for the first 5-10 minutes. After that, we spread
out and naturally form smaller sub-groups. We ask experienced runners
to wait at key intersections to help guide newer runners.
Bring warm and dry clothing for after the run, even though it'll be warm, and even if you aren't going to dinner with us.
Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. We will pick a nearby restaurant at the end of the run.
Carpool:
It hasn't been that active recently, However, if you are interested, please contact John Crowther at johnlewiscrowther@..., 303-902-6173
This week's run is at Apex Park. The early group meets at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:00pm. Meet by the large trail map. Because of the rally (see below), we'll stagger the starts of the main group to avoid congestion with bikers along the bottom section of the trail.
Run notes: This is likely the last chance to run Apex for the season on a Thursday night. Please review the trail map and route descriptions. Keep the runs short to finish by 7:00pm. Sunset is at 6:43; twilight at 7:10.

We usually suggest several routes of different length at each run. The different routes are designed so that runners of different abilities can start and finish at about the same time. Please pick the appropriate route for you. Don't necessarily follow the people in front of you. The sub-groups/routes are approximately defined as follows: Extra-Long: sub-40 10km (road race time, not the pace run at DTR runs) Long: low-mid 40s 10km Intermediate: mid 40s to low 50s 10km Short: mid 50s+ 10km

trail issues from the biker perspective, and to share your views from a runner
perspective. After the run, I encourage you to attend the Open Space Advisory
Comm meeting where they will be discussing the proposal.
