There will not be a potluck party this week. You are still invited to
join the group for dinner. After the run, the group will decide where
to go. It's usually somewhere nearby; in this case, somewhere in Golden.

The next party will be in two weeks. We'll have a picnic after the
run, at Lair 'o the Bear. I realize that this is just after Pikes and
Leadville, so some of you may not want to run that day. Please plan to
come out anyway, take an easy hike (good for recovery), soak your
tired legs in the creek, then join us for the picnic and regale us
with tales from your races.

Registration has reopened for this Sunday's Lookout Mountain Hill
Climb, Race #5 in the La Sportiva Front Range Frenzy.

The race is Sunday, 7:30am (before it gets hot), 4.5mi, 1,900' vertical, all
uphill, on trail, starting at the School of Mines, and finishing at Boettcher
Mansion. You will be bussed back to the start after the race, or you can choose
to run or ride a bike down. I will be able to transport a some bikes to the
finish.

NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION!!!
Online registration will be available until Friday afternoon, or until the race
fills. I won't be at Thursday's run, but I'll try to arrange for someone else to
have apps and take checks for me - no promises.

If you can't race that day (e.g., those of you tapering for Leadville,
or doing Georgetown the day before), I can use the extra help at the road
crossings and aid station.

For registration and more info on the race,

For those of you not doing Georgetown or ERC on Sat, or Lookout on
Sun, ...

Run up Squaw Peak and Chief Mtn., close to town, just 10mi from Evergreen.

Meet at the Bergen Park park-n-ride lot at 7:30am. We'll carpool from
there to the start, ~10mi up hwy 103, Squaw Pass Rd.

We'll start near the new Echo Mtn. snowboard area. In a short
distance, we can climb up to about 12,000'. I'll bring maps.

From Denver, take I-70 to Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit #252. Follow
hwy 74 for ~2.25mi, to the light, at the junction with hwy 65. Turn
left at the light, then right into the lot. For a map, go to
http://www.rtd-denver.com/
click on the park-n-Ride button.
Find Bergen Park on the map.

RSVP so I know whether to expect or wait for people, though not
required. Look for me in a white Prius. Cell 303-870-0487.

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Gudy Gaskill. Meet at Ralston
Elementary School at 6:00pm.

Workout: We will be doing some hard efforts on hills. There may be two
workouts, depending on who shows up.

These workouts are for runners of all abilities. (The only exception
is for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off.
You should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.) The group stays in a compact
area (e.g., short loop or out-and-back), so no one will get left
behind. We run for time, not distance, so we'll start and finish
together. The route is designed typically with the hard efforts on
climbs and/or non-technical terrain; descents and rocky terrain will
be easy efforts. The purpose is to combine track-like speed workouts
with power training for hills.

The speed workouts will take place every week, as long as there is
interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with the workout
info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

Those of you doing the Ascent on Saturday, meet after the race,
2:00pm, at Memorial Park, near the children's swings. Look for Mike
Quispe. Take some photos, maybe get some food together. Some of you
will be staying for the awards, at 5:00pm. This is open to anyone on
the list, and friends.

Next Thursday, please come out and share your race stories with us.
We're having a picnic after the run. I know you may not feel like
running, after your big races. Come out for an easy hike along the
creek, or show up later for the picnic.

Good luck to all of you doing the Pikes Ascent and/or Marathon, and
runners, pacers and crew at the Leadville 100 this weekend.

Join us for some training runs in the nearby mountains. These are good
training for Imogene, Breck Crest, Trans-Rockies, or just some good
runs in some great places.

Saturday: Squaw Peak. We're going to run some hill repeats. There's a
~1.8mi hill, on a service road, that climbs ~700', to ~11,450'. This
is a good simulation of the Imogene course. If you don't want to run
the hill hard, you can run easier in the same area, and take a nearby
trail up Chief Mtn. We'll run about 1:15-1:30, including warm-up and
cool-down.

Meet at 7:30am, at the base of hwy 103 (Squaw Pass Rd), in the lot, by
the ballfields. This is across the fields from the RTD park-n-ride
lot. From Denver, take I70 to Evergreen Parkway, exit #252. Follow hwy
74 ~2.5mi, to the light at hwy 103. Turn left into the lot. From
there, we'll carpool ~11 miles up hwy 103, to near the Echo Mtn
snowboard area.

Sunday: Argentine Pass. We'll run 3-3.5 hours. This is an out-and-back
run, so you'll get as high as you can before turning around. The pass
is 13,192', with views of the backside of Keystone, Grays, Montezuma,
and more. We're going to start off of Guanella Pass Rd, about 3-4 mi
above Georgetown.

Meet at 6:45am, at the Cold Spring Park-n-Ride, 4th and Union, in
Lakewood. Take 6th ave. to the Simms/Union exit. Go south. Take the
first left at 4th, then left into the lot. Look for me in a white
Prius, license plate RUNUPHL.
http://www.rtd-denver.com/parknride/index.html

If coming from Evergreen, we'll pick you up at the bottom of Floyd
Hill (jct of hwy 65 & I70), at 7:15am. RSVP if meeting us here so we
know to stop and wait for you. Reply is not necessary if meeting us at
Cold Spring.

If you're late or lost, call me at 303-870-0487.

We hope to start running a little after 8:00am.

Subject: Re: Hood to Coast Relay 2007

I was hoping that you could help me out by sending an email to
your ultra runner network. We just lost a female runner for the Hood
to Coast relay and need to find one immediately. The race is August
24-25. We need a female 30 years old or older who will run 3 legs of
the race for a total of approx. 14-17 miles. At this point, speed is
unimportant but if someone can run under 45min for 10k that would be
great.

Subject: Request for Runner at 24 Hr of Triathalon 9/1 &2
Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 11:49:45 -0600 (GMT-06:00)
From: Theresa Daus-Weber <tdaus-weber@...>

I was contacted by Kevin Anderberg, a road cyclist who is coordinating
a team for the 24 Hours of Triathlon at Cherry Creek on 9/1 & 2. I do
not know Kevin but he is searching for a runner for his team. The
runner would be expected to run a competitive ~60 to 100K on Kevin's
team.

Kevin said that he contacted La Sportiva and Adam Chase who ran on the
winning 24 Hours of Triathlon last year for referrals for a runner for
Kevin's team but has not received a runner referral as of this
morning. Other than stating his team's competitive goal, Kevin did
not state if the runner must be male or female but I sense that he's
looking for a male runner. Kevin's contact info is:
kanderberg@...
303-604-6510

I told Kevin that beyond submitting this request to you that I would
not be able to further search for a runner for him due to the
limitaitons on my schedule. Do you feel that this is an appropriate
request for your DTR? Thank you for your consideration of this request.

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet at the
dirt lot, outside the park, at 6:00pm.

Workout: We will be running flat trails, focusing on speed and leg
turnover. I know it's supposed to be hot. We'll be in the trees and
shade, and along the creek, most of the time.

These workouts are for runners of all abilities. (The only exception
is for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off.

THURSDAY RUN & PICNIC
Run Location: Lair `o the Bear. The main group will start at 6:15pm;
the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: This is an out-and-back run. Please bring a watch and use
time to decide where/when to turn around. It'll be faster coming back.
Please finish by 7:30 so we can enjoy the picnic in daylight.

If you raced Pikes, Leadville, or something else last weekend and
don't want to run, come out and do an easy hike along the creek. It's
scenic, cool, and soaking your legs in the water will help your
recovery. Or, just show up later for the picnic. We want to hear how
your races went.

Picnic: Everyone is invited to the picnic, even if you can't run, or
forget to bring food. There's always extra food available. This is a
good time for newer runners to meet us old timers, and vice-versa.
Suggestions of things to bring: hot or cold main dishes, pasta/green
salads, fruit, side dishes, desserts, drinks (e.g., beer, wine, sodas,
juice), etc. There are grills available. If anyone wants to be in
charge of grilling, please let us know in advance so we tell others to
bring appropriate food.

Bring dry and warm clothes for after the run. It cools quickly after
sunset, down by the creek.

Tentative schedule:
8/30; Falcon, UPPER LOT
9/6; Apex
9/13; O'Fallon
9/20; Lookout/Chimney Gulch. Potluck at Gayle & Rueben's after the run.

BROKEN FOOT
"Hi friends,

I'm Erik Von Halle of Golden Colorado and I've been out a few times
with the group.

I have a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsil on my right foot
from hiking in some tennis shoes. I thought it was just fallen arches
at first but it's been months and it isn't getting better. I am now in
an ankle brace and I'm doing much better but it looks like it's going
to be six weeks before I recover.

Have any of you had an injury like this? What treatment did you get
and how was your recovery?

ERIK

You can reply off group to me at erikvonhalle@... if you prefer."

Subject: TransRockies Race Partner Sought

"Running Partner Sought for TransRockies Race! September 16-21st

I am looking for a partner for the Inaugural TransRockies race, a
multi-day staged trail race in the Colorado Rockies.

September 16-21st, 2007. Six days. 125 miles.
Beaver Creek to Aspen, CO

Additional details on the race at: www.transrockies.com

I would love to make a new friend near my pace to train and compete
with. Solo entrants are not permitted; the event is limited to 150 teams.

2-3 days are ultra distance; all 6 days have significant elevation.

$1250 Registration fee includes all support, including transport of
gear, luggage, tent rental and set-up, breakfast and evening meal at
each stage, energy bars, energy drinks, fruit, during stages, access
to showers, etc. Yes, the entry fee is high, but for me it's worth it
to not have to coordinate logistics/crew on my own.

Ideal Race Partner:
Male or female, doesn't matter.
Strong running base (or solid running + alternate sport base)
As its rather late in the game, my ideal partner is presently
sustaining a minimum 35+ miles/week running + cross-training (or
higher running mileage with less cross training)

Pace: 9-10 min/mile on hilly trails; 7.5-8.5 min/mile on gentle
terrain. The race requires that you stay within two minutes of your
teammate at all times, so finding a partner similar to my pace is
essential. I recently finished my first 10K road race in 47:32 (it was
far from an "all out" effort).

Update: I recently discovered that at 10,000 ft, my pace is somewhat
slower than those posted above (imagine that!). With 6 days straight
of long mileage running up and down mountains, I will be averaging
more like 10-15 min/miles. I don't expect to be very competitive at
TransRockies, but I want to run the strongest race possible given my
ability. I want to be comfortable and happy throughout this ultimate
running vacation.

Dedication: You should serious about the TransRockies Race, and on
track to being the fittest you can possibly be by September. My
training currently consumes ~15-20 hours/week. Presently I run ~6-12
hrs/week, and fill the remaining hours with a mix of cycling, weights,
and yoga.

Age: within 10-15 years of me preferred (I'm 27). I don't mean to be
ageist, but I just think we'll get along better if you're between the
admittedly arbitrary ages of 12 and 42 ; )

A little more about me:
27, female, trail runner, road cyclist, backpacker, urban planner,
graduate student. I live in Berkeley, CA (I am arriving in Colorado 8
days before the race to acclimate at 9,000 feet before the race).

I've been running for 1.5 yrs, so I'm still in that puppy love stage.
I typically run one trail race/month, for the social aspect. I am on a
women's running team (an ambassador team for LUNA bar). 1/2 marathon
distance is my favorite so far. I like to challenge myself pace-wise.
I am a little obsessive about injury prevention, so I take care not to
overdo it. I started running to cross-train for cycling, but running
has become my primary sport as of late. I have never run farther than
20 miles, but I am deep into training (lots of back-to-back long runs
to simulate the race), and am very excited about TransRockies. I was
inspired to register for this event on a tramping holiday in New
Zealand. Most days on the trail I found myself thinking "this would be
so much more fun if I was running!"

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please tell me a little bit
about you, your running experience, and running goals. You can write
me at: ssyed@...

Please be in touch soon, the race is so close.

Sarah"

Join us on Saturday for a run at altitude. We'll run about 1:30, at a
moderate pace, on a trail without a lot of steep or long hills. The
plan is to run near Berthoud Pass (this may change in the morning).

Meet at 7:00am, at the Cold Spring Park-n-Ride, 4th and Union, in
Lakewood. Take 6th ave. to the Simms/Union exit. Go south. Take the
first left at 4th, then left into the lot. Meet towards the N end of
the lot.

we know to stop and wait for you. Reply is not necessary if meeting us
at Cold Spring.

IN THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE:
+ Tuesday speed workout
+ Thursday evening run
+ Other DTR affiliated runs: Sat Evergreen, Sun Golden
+ Carpools
+ Race volunteers needed
+ Race calendar – NEW EVENTS ADDED
+ Other area clubs and runs
+ Discounts for DTRs

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Boettcher Mansion Nature Center
in Genesee. Meet in the lot, in front of the nature center, at 6:00pm.
This is the last planned speed workout of the season.

Workout: This will be a variation of the previous workouts we've done
there. We'll run the same clockwise loop of the Meadow Loop trail.
However, we'll split each loop into two shorter intervals – hard
across the lower section, easy around the southern turns, hard back to
the north, jog the connector trail back to the start. Each hard leg
will be about Ό - 3/10 mi. We'll repeat the loops for about 25 minutes.

Directions: Take I70 to the Lookout Mountain/Buffalo Bill exit, #256,
then follow large brown signs.
From Denver, take a right from the off ramp, then an immediate left on
the frontage road, US40.
Go Ύ mi to Lookout Mtn Rd, the 2nd street.
Turn right and go ~1.4mi
Turn left at Colorow and go ~1.2mi to the mansion.

From Golden and north: Take hwy 93 S to hwy 6 E, to Lookout Mtn
Rd/19th Street.
Turn right, W up the road. Follow the winding road ~5.5 miles up.
About Ό mi after the road flattens out, just past the Buffalo Bill
museum, take the next right onto Colorow Rd.
Go ~3/4 mi to the mansion.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: UPPER LOT of Mt. Falcon. The main group will start at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Subject: Tuesday Speed Workout
runuphillracing

This week's speed workout will be at Boettcher Mansion Nature Center
in Genesee. Meet in the lot, in front of the nature center, at 6:00pm.

The Nature Center is at about 7,400', so it should be noticeably cooler than the
city.

Workout: This will be the same as last week's workout. Start with a
10-15 minute warm-up. You can do this on the trails either inside or
outside the Nature Center. Include one loop of the workout course in
the warm-up. The workout course will be a clockwise loop of the Meadow
Loop trail. I, Adam won't be there. Those of you who have done this before,
please show the course to the newer runners.

Start at the bottom of the trail, by the wood fence. Run hard,
following the trail as it curves right, back to the left, to where the
trail bends right and dips, just before climbing; a little over Ό mi.
Jog easy up the hill, around the right curve, and the next left curve.
Go hard again before the next right curve, and continue hard to the
trail junction. Turn right and jog easy down the hill, right at the
next junction, and down to the wood fence. Start the loop going hard
again. Continue repeating the loops, going hard/easy for 25-30
minutes. Then, regroup at the upper junction and jog as a group back
to the cars.

The Tuesday workouts will continue as long as there is interest and
daylight.

TUESDAY SPEED
The speed workouts will continue as long as there is enough interest.
The season is winding down for many of us. Please let me know if you
would like these to continue.

++++++++++
THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Apex. The main group will start at 6:15pm; the early
group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: There are clockwise and counter-clockwise route choices.
Before the start, the group will decide which way to go. This is a
popular biking location. If you are running towards the front or rear
of a pack, please alert the others runners of bikers by calling out
"bike up" or "bike back." On the steeper hills, try to yield to uphill
riders. It's a lot easier for a runner to stop and restart, than for a
rider to have to restart going uphill.

Tentative schedule:
9/13; O'Fallon
9/20; Lookout/Chimney Gulch. Party at Gayle & Rueben's after the run.
9/27; South Valley park
10/4; Hogback/Matthews Winters. 6PM start

No speed workout scheduled for this week. The season is winding down

++++++++++
THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: O'Fallon Park. The main group will start at 6:15pm; the
early group at 5:30pm.

Parking notes: Drive down the dirt road from hwy 74. You'll see a
concrete bridge on the right. That's where we're going to meet to
start the run. Park in the following order:
1) Just past the bridge, where the road curves left.
2) Cross the bridge to the right, and park by the bathrooms and picnic
tables.
3) Before the bridge, there's a small parking area on the right.
4) Follow the road past the bridge, and around the curve to the left,
to the lower parking area.

Run notes: We're going to try this in the reverse direction from
what's listed on the site, and what we did last time. People didn't
like the steep downhill at the end last time, on the Picnic Loop
trail. Instead, we'll start up that direction, and return via the
lower Meadow View trail. You might want to print and bring a copy of the map
with you.

Start for All: From across the concrete bridge, start up the steep
hill to the Picnic Loop. Take either side of the loop. The left side
is shorter. Continue up, staying right at the West Ridge Loop, to the
Bear Creek trail, at junction 7. Go right on Bear Creek, up to Meyers
Gulch Rd. and Pence Park. Cross the road for a bathroom break if you
want. Turn around and head back down the Bear Creek trail.

Short: Stay right at junction 7, on the Bear Creek trail, around to
junction 5. Take either left. If you take the sharper left, West
Ridge, as it parallels the other left, Bear Creek, stay right at the
next junction until it meets Bear Creek again. Continue down to
junction 1. Then, go left down the Meadow View trail to the lower lot.

Intermediate: Stay right at junction 7, on the Bear Creek trail,
around to junction 5. Go right on Meadow View, over the hill, down to
junction 4. Stay left, down the steep trail, to junction 2, at the
Bear Creek trail. Then, you can either take a right and quick left, or
left and quick right; either way, as long as you end up on the Meadow
View trail. Follow Meadow View down to the lower lot.

Long: Stay right at junction 7, on the Bear Creek trail, around to
junction 5. Go right on Meadow View, over the hill, down to junction
4. Go right, up and over another hill. You'll come down a steep,
grassy trail, to junction 3, and the Bear Creek trail. Go left on the
Bear Creek trail for almost a mile. Take the next two rights onto the
Meadow View trail, and continue down to the lower lot.

Finish for All: If you didn't park in the lower dirt lot, go left from
there, up the road, about 200 yards, back to the start.

Tentative schedule:
9/20; Lookout/Chimney Gulch. Party/potluck at Gayle & Rueben's, in
Golden, after the run.
9/27; South Valley park
10/4; Hogback/Matthews Winters. 6PM start
10/11; South Table Mtn.
10/18; Bear Creek Lake Park

THURSDAY RUN & PARTY
Run Location: Lookout/Chimney Gulch. The main group will start at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Parking notes: To make room for as many people as possible, please
park as close together as possible/safe, around the edge of the dirt
lot. Make room for additional cars in the middle. If the dirt lot
fills, there's additional parking ~200 yards down the road, by the
small park. There's a porta-potty by this park.

Run notes: This is an out-and-back run. Please use your watch to
determine when/where to turn. Turn at about 35 minutes, so that you
can finish the run at 7:15-7:20. We want to start the potluck before
it gets too late.

Potluck: All are invited to the potluck, whether or not you run/hike
with us, whether or not you can bring food. There's always plenty of
extra food and drink. This is a good way for newer runners to meet us
old timers, and vice-versa. Bring dry and warm clothes for after the run.

Food: Please bring some food or drink to share with others.
Suggestions of things to bring: hot or cold main dishes, pasta/green
salads, fruit, side dishes, desserts, drinks (e.g., beer, wine, sodas,
juice), etc. They have an "itty bitty gas grill. DTR will provide
plates, utensils, cups, napkins, etc.

Potluck location/directions: From the end of the run, drive back down
the hill to hwy 6.
Turn left at the light.
Go down the hill to the junction of hwys 6, 58 & 93.
From the junction, continue straight, north, up the hill, on hwy 93,
for ~Ύmi, to Iowa, the next light.
Turn left on Iowa Dr.
Take the first right onto White Ash Dr.
The house in on the right, almost to the top of the hill.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: South Valley Park. The main group will start at 6:15pm;
the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: We'll do a slight variation of the posted route. Everyone
should do one loop of the Grazing Elk trail (we usually go
counter-clockwise). Then:
Short – Return via Swallow or Coyote Song trail.

Intermediate – On the return, after crossing the road, take the first
right, then stay right at the next junction. Take the Coyote Song
trail down to Deer Creek Cyn Rd. Turn around there, and return to the
lot on Coyote Song.

Long – On the return, after crossing the road, take the first right,
then make a sharp left at the next junction, Coyote Song. In another
0.4mi, take a right up the Lyons Back trail. You come to a 3-way
junction just over the top of the hogback. Run a counter-clockwise
triangle – right at the junction, left up the Cathy Johnson trail,
then left on Columbine – returning back to the junction. Head back
over the hogback, and down Lyons Back, to Coyote Song. Go right, and
return to the lot.

Please bring a watch and plan your route to finish before dark.
Sunset 6:50pm
End Civil Twilight 7:17pm

This is the first of our regular Full Moon (FM) runs of the season.
The FM is actually on Wed. The moon should be rising as we finish our
run. The next FM run will be on 10/25.

This is a regular reminder about how DTR works.

DTR is a free group of people who run trails in the Denver area.

This is a newsletter type group, not a discussion group. Only a handful of
people can send messeges to the group. Repeated surveys has determined that
that's the way the group likes it.

This doesn't mean that you can't send something appropriate to the group. If you
do have something to send, send it to us and we will pass it on to the group if
appropriate.
DenverTrailRunners-owner@yahoogroups.com

The Thursday evening run is the only regularly scheduled run. Other runs -
weekends, weekday mornings, other afternoons, etc. - happen when someone
volunteers to lead a run. Leading doesn't mean being the fastest runner. It just
means setting a time/place, and explaining the run to others who show up. If you
want to run with others at another time, let us know and we will pass it on to
the group. Only a small portion of the 1,400 show up on Thursdays. Chances are
others on the list are interested in other runs too "Build it and they will
come."

This also applies to carpooling to runs or races. Share the gas costs and have
some company. Let us know several days in advance, so we have time to pass it on
to the group.

If you have other ideas for the group, please let us know. The group is here for
your benefit.

Please don't be intimidated. The runs are for all ages and ability - REALLY. On
Thursdays, we have a wide range of running speeds - from 10k speeds in the low
30s, to 60+, and some who walk the trails. Come on out and have fun. You'll meet
some good people and new training partners. The only way to get better is to get
out there.

When you do show up, please introduce yourself to me and others. We try to greet
new people and make them feel welcome, but sometimes I forget or don't have
time. Please don't be shy.

DTR is designed to be as self-service as possible. This includes joining,
leaving, or changing your e-mail subscription. Just about anything you might
want to know about the group can be found at either:
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/ (including a FAQ page), or
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DenverTrailRunners

Please read the info there - including FAQs, maps and directions, and old
messages - before sending a question. There are over 1,400 people (as of 8/1/07)
on the Yahoo list and we don't have time to respond to every individual
questions. A lot of time and energy has been spent in developing the site info.
Then, if you still have questions, feel free to contact us at
DenverTrailRunners-owner@yahoogroups.com

Train smart.

See you on the trails.

Subject: Sunday Run - Centennial Cone park
denvertrailr...
Send Email Send Email

Join us for a run this Sunday. We'll run at Centennial Cone park if the weather
is good, or an alternate location if it's wet.*

Centennial Cone is a fairly new park in the Jeffco Open Space system.
It's about 10mi W of Golden, between hwy 6 and Golden Gate Canyon. The
trails are still new and in nice shape, with some nice scenery. Weekends are
alternating use at the park. This Sunday is for hikers
and equestrians; no bikes.

Park info, maps and directions:
http://co.jefferson.co.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R95.htm

The main loop, from either of the upper lots, is about 12 miles. If you start at
Mayhem Gulch, that adds about 4.5mi. There's also a shorter loop from Mayhem
Gulch, 4.7mi. If you want to do something in between, you can go out-and-back on
part of the main loop.

Most of the trails are between 7,000' - 7,600', a few hundred feet
lower from the Mayhem trailhead. Nothing is terribly steep, even
coming up from Mayhem. Nothing is that rocky. The Travois, Mayhem and Juniper
trails are single track, in and out of the trees. The Elk Range trail is a wider
path, almost like a service road, and mostly in the open. The difficulty is
comparable to Lair of the Bear, Technical=3, Physical=3, Navigational=2, on a
1-5 scale, 5 being the hardest.

Meet at 10am, at the Loaf 'n Jug, in Golden. There, we'll see how long different
people want to run, arrange carpools, then head up to the park. Please review
the map and directions ahead of time.

The Loaf 'n Jug is located near Iowa and hwy 93. 102 N Rubey Dr,
Golden, 80403. Just up from the gas station, there's a semi-circular
drive, with parking spaces around a grass and walkway median. We'll
meet there.

If you're coming from the S, foothills, or Denver via hwy 6, take hwy
6 into Golden. At the junctions of hwys 6, 58 & 93, continue straight,
N, up the hill, another 3/4 mi. Take the next right, Iowa. Take an
immediate left onto Rubey.

From Denver via I-70, head W of I-70. At the curve, take the hwy 58
exit. Continue W between S & N Table mountains, past the Coors
Brewery. Exit at Washington St. Go right from the off ramp, up the
hill. Turn left at Iowa, then the next right onto Rubey.

From Boulder, take hwy 93 S towards Golden. As you pass N Table mtn,
on your left, turn left onto Washington, the first street after Golden
Gate Canyon Rd. Take the next right onto Rubey.

*Sunday's forecast calls for a good chance of rain and snow and snow. If it's
snowing or just a light drizzle, we'll still run at the park. If it's anything
more than that, we'll change the run location to some hilly roads in the area.
As a rule, DTR does not run on muddy trails. There's plenty of sunny days here,
so help preserve the trails, stay off them when they're wet, and save your trail
run for another day.

attention to the trail and junctions on the way out, so that they'll
look familiar on the way back.

Everyone should just run the main out-and-back route (blue line),
unless you start with one of the early groups. Not everyone will be
able to make it to the Golden Stairs (12). Please bring a watch and
plan turn-around to finish before dark.

Subject: Open Space Trails Comments

Send Email Send Email

I want your comments about the Jefferson County (Jeffco) Open Space
(OS) trails and parks.

Tue, Oct 23, is the next OS Trail Users Task Force (TUTF) meeting. The
TUTF is a chance to share user comments with OS board and staff, and
work on conflicts with other users. I am one of the "hiker" (meant to
include runners and others who use the trails on foot)
representatives. There are also bike and equestrian representatives. I
will use this opportunity to share your comments. Jeffco OS is very open to
public voices. The more comments I get, the more impact it will have.

Specifically, I want to know:
What you like about the Jeffco OS trails and parks.
What you don't like about them.
Questions you have about them.
Ideas or suggestions.
Conflicts you've had with other users. It would help if you could provide
specific details, such as incident location, date, time and comments, if
possible, rather than just a generic comment like "I don't like ..."

The questions below come from one of the other hiker representatives.
Please take a minute or two to answer them.

Please respond to this address (not one of my others), and don't change the
subject line.

Thanks
Adam

Survey:
A-Do you think a 5 mph passing rule for bikes would significantly
ease conflict if they would really do it? (or optimistically, at
least the majority) Some other open space parks around the country are
trying this. Its admittedly difficult to enforce.

B-Do you believe there is a need for more separated use or
hiker/equestrian only trails to provide a different kind of
recreational experience than you get on a multiple use trail?

If so, which of the following would you support:
1-more alternate day trails at new parks, like Centennial Cone?
2-adding to the Turkey Trot Trail (hiker only) at Mt Falcon to make it
a longer trail and a loop?
3- Building a second parallel trail up the canyon at Apex to separate use?
4-Making Mt Lindo a hiker only park like Galbraith?
5-Closing one existing loop trail from the upper trailhead at White
Ranch to bikes? (Seems like there are enough options there, they could
give one up?)
6-Building a hiker only trail at Mathews-Winters utilizing the power
line route in part and making a loop back around to the north?
7-Building a downhiller bike course somewhere on Open Space (OS) in an
effort to lure some of the downhill bikers from parks like Apex.
8-Building some well designed and challenging bike trails in the OS
lands near Boulder (Coal Creek Canyon area) to attempt to get the
Boulder bikers to go there instead of places like White Ranch?
9-Make those areas along Coal creek hiker/equestrian only parks.
10-Make the OS area north of Bear Creek and west and south of Mt
Morrison a hiker/equestrian only park.

What would be your top 3?

Any others you think should be considered?

Please indicate if you are a hiker, principally a runner, or a hiker
and biker (equal more or less), an equestrian, or a biker principally
as well.
Thanks!

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet outside the park, just W of
C-470, in the dirt lot, at the corner of Rooney and Morrison roads,
across from the gas station and bike path. There are three
/times/groups to choose from:
Mary's group - 3:30pm
Scott's group - 5:30pm
Main group - 6:00pm

Run Notes: Bear Creek Lake Park is one of our regular winter run
locations. The trails are mostly flat and not that rocky. The park
roads and bike paths provide a vehicle free (almost) paved option when
it's too snowy (like most of last winter) or muddy. This week,
everyone should be able to make it across Turkey Creek while it's
still light. After that, the trail to the base of the dam is fairly
open and smooth. From the base of the dam, you can take paved roads back.

DONATE SHOES
Nicholas Sterner writes
"The AIR Foundation is implementing a running program for the at-risk
youth population at Urban Peak. The running program is supported by a
highly enthusiastic group of Urban Peak's case management and
development staff. If we can get the youth to participate for one
month, Etonic will reward their committment by providing the youth
with new shoes!

The program begins on October 18! Based on the required one-month
participation period, and the shoe delivery period, the youth will be
running for about 6 weeks on whatever used or new running shoes we can
provide.

Urban Peak provides services to youth between the ages of 15 – 24, so
most adult sizes should work out fine. The shoes can be used or new.
Shoe donations can be made by contacting The AIR Foundation directly
or by taking the shoes to Runner's Roost in Lakewood at 437 S.
Wadsworth (just South of Alameda on the West side of Wadsworth)."

Hello fellow runners.

This summer I had the opportunity to ride across Iowa with the Lance Armstrong Foundation during RAGBRAI. The memories I have will stay with me for a long time to come. It was great to share stories and see the power of Team LiveStrong along the way and how it moved people both physically and emotionally. One of the best moments for me came after the ride was over and I was able to sit down with my father and re-live my week with him. My father is a proud man and to see him tear up and tell me how proud he was of what I had done will be a feeling I never forget. How cool is it to have a father tell a son he is proud of him.

Unfortunately over the past couple of months his health declined and on October 4, 2007 lost his 6 year battle with prostate cancer. Speaking at his memorial service was one of the hardest things for me to do, but after the service I had several people tell me what an inspiration and motivating force my father was in not only his own battle, but with others he met along the way and encourage them to LiveStrong.

I was lucky to have spent time with him before he passed where he continued to teach me the lessons of life and never once did I hear him complain or say "why me". It is that strength and passion for life that made me promise to continue his fight against cancer on his behalf.

RAGBRAI was only the start for me. I hope to bring the same passion for life my father had with me as I run the NY City Marathon this year with as a member of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

This is why I am asking for you help in reaching my goal as I run in memory of my father and all those who have passed or are fighting the battle against cancer. Please click the link below to find out more.

If anyone is also running this year and would like to share the cost of a hotel room please let me know.

Sincerely,
Chris Voeller

DTR welcomes anyone else who wants company on, or wants to lead any
trail run, at any day or time. We will publicize it and help build
support for the run via the list. With ~1,500 on the list, there's
bound to be enough interest for groups to run on other than Thursday
nights. Please send announcements for any run, or anything else

Official hotel this year for the Rim Rock Run is Comfort Inn in Fruita - NOT Grand Junction. (This has totally changed from previous years.)
Comfort Inn located in Fruita, CO
400 Jurassic
970-858-1333
I-70 exit 19
Total Est. Drive-Time:  4 hours
Total Est. Distance from Denver: 254.40 miles

$49.99 per night when you ask for the Rim Rock Run Special. (But this might be only for single-bed rooms)

I reserved 3 adjacent double-queen rooms. (I can cancel one if I need to, or if you want to transfer one of the rooms to your credit card let me know.)
Confirmation #'s 190839 & 190967 & 190968
I don't have the total cost yet, and won't until I get a head-count from everyone and call Comfort Inn back with the specifics.

Late checkout is still kind of early so I reserved one room for two nights. There's a party after the race which is the BEST! Great beer and pizza have been served in past years. There's a new race director, though, so maybe it's different, but we don't want to have to rush back to the rooms. So when we leave race-day morning, we need to pile all our stuff in the room reserved for Sat.

At this time, I don't know anyone who's staying until Sunday, but it's an option since the room will be paid for.

This is on my credit card, so please let me know and pay me back. If we have people in beds and camped on the floor, it ought to be cheap (per-person)!

I need a head-count! Who's going??? Who needs a room? I need to call the hotel back and let them know and cancel a room if I have too many.

As for carpooling, my car is filled but anyone going who wants to carpool should probably post back and see if you can hook up with someone.

WINTER MODE
Daylight Savings Time ends this weekend. Yet, DTR continues to run
through the winter, at dark, sometimes on ice and snow. Some think
it's a little crazy to run in the cold and dark, on ice and snow.
Regardless of what you think about running on winter evenings, we'll
be there, and you are welcome to join us.

When it's cold, we don't stand around much before and after the runs.
Many of us will wait in our cars until just before the start of the
run. We're not going to take a lot of time explaining the route or
making introductions. We are less likely to stop and wait at key
intersections. Turnout is usually lower than over the summer. Please
familiarize yourself with the routes in advance. Use the trail rating
("N" means navigational difficulty) to see which routes are easy to
follow and when you might need a map. Everyone is welcome, and I do
want to encourage you to join us, but you may have to do much of the
run on your own. Everyone is invited to join us at dinner after the
runs. We'll take more time to do introductions and socialize inside,
where it's warm.

An exception to this is our full moon runs. These runs are meant to be
social, not hard workouts. We do try to keep everyone pretty close
together and regroup at key intersections. These have been fun outings
in the past.

You will need a light over the winter (maybe not on the full moon).
Sometimes, you will have to deal with ice. More on these below.

You will want to have warm, dry clothes to change into quickly after
the run – probably something different than your work clothes.

WINTER ROUTES
We will continue to run some of the trails over the winter. We usually
stay away from the more technical trails and those that tend to get
icy. We also run some flat and/or paved locations.

Some of our best runs have been in the snow – such as cutting virgin
tracks on Green Mountain, like being in the wilderness, yet so close
to town; or running up Chimney Gulch, after a fresh snowfall, where
the snow covered the rocks making it safer and smoother than running
on a track. Don't be afraid of the snow and ice. More on ice running
below. If there's a lot of snow, like most of last winter, we may end
up snowshoeing. More on snowshoeing below.

Some of our regular winter running routes are:
* Bear Creek Lake Park - Mostly flat trails that are good in snow/ice;
road/bike path option
* Red Rocks – Hilly roads (low traffic) and trails, depending on
conditions. Connection to Matthews Winters.
* Green Mountain – Dries quickly. Avoid when muddy.
* South Table – Short climb, then mostly flat on top. Avoid when muddy
or windy.
* Lookout – Sometimes we run up the trail, then down the road (low
traffic).
* Chief Hosa – Maintained dirt road until last mile to the top; may
require some post-holing through snow.
* Stonehouse – Bike path along Bear Creek. Trail along the path in
some parts. Run to Bear Creek Lake Park dam and back.
* Crown Hill – New this year, if there's interest.

We're always open to input for new run locations.

The run location may change at the last minute due to weather and
trail conditions. As a group, we try to stay off wet and muddy trails.
Using (running, hiking, biking, horse) trails when they're wet and
soft can leave ruts and speed erosion. DTR will take a conservative
approach when deciding where to run.

If you do happen to be on a muddy trail, please stay on the trail,
even if that means running though the mud. Do not run in the brush.
This expands the footprint of the trail for the future and destroys
the natural environment. Please avoid using unofficial "social" or
game trails.

ICE
Sometimes we have to run on ice and snow. Here are some tricks for
making that easier.

There are several tools to help you when running on ice. There are
devices that slip on your shoes, such as Yaktrax, Get-A-Grip,
STABILicers, and GripOns. These cost $15-$50, and are available at
most running, outdoor and sporting goods stores. Take note of and shop
at the stores that offer discounts to DTRs (listed at the bottom of
the regular weekly message). They easily slip on most running shoes.
These devices (and screwshoes, below) work best on ice and hard packed
snow. They don't help much in deep, soft powder. They can fall off the
shoe in deeper and softer snow.

Many of us use screwshoes. It's a simple and cheap way to convert your
shoes to ice runners. You put sheet metal screws into your shoe, point
up – yes, I said point up. It's the hex head that grips the ice. You
don't feel the point if you use the right screws. They don't ruin your
shoes; the rubber seals around the hole when you take them out in the
spring. Most of us use an older pair of trail shoes. All you need are
a few screws across the back and outside of the heel, and across the
ball of the foot. It takes just a few minutes to do, and is
inexpensive. If the sole has raised tread, put them in there. You have
to be careful if putting them into shoes with air/gel pockets. I
recommend #6 or #8 head size, Ό" in the front, 3/8" or ½" in the heel.
A socket wrench works better than a screw driver. I'll bring a pair,
some screws, and a socket, to demonstrate, at the next several runs.

http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm

Learning to run on ice can improve your stride. With or without
traction devices, use a light, quick stride. Strike the ground with
your feet pulling back against the ground. Get up on the balls of your
feet. It's hard to balance on your heals. This will help keep you
nimble and safe. I use the image of running on hot coals. If you can
do that well, you will become more efficient when running on dry ground.

Consider getting some neoprene (e.g., Sealskinz, Seirus) or Gore-tex
socks to help keep your feet warm and dry.

LIGHTS - Thanks to Jeff O'Reilly for writing much of this section.
Running during the short days of winter usually requires that you run
with lights.
Some things to consider:
*Contrast gives you depth-perception
*Peripheral vision avoids vertigo and tunnel-vision
*Brightness gives you speed and confidence.
*Weight/bulk
*Battery life
*Cost

Contrast is created by having light below your eyes where you can see
some shadow. The closer your lighting is to your eyes – like a
headlamp – the less the contrasts. Dancing shadows help reveal where
and how deep a hole is or how big a rock is. If the light is right
next to your eyes, you'll see no shadow. If the shadows are too dark
(too much of a good thing), this may erode your confidence, making you
slow down.

Multiple sources of light, from different angles, improves contrast.
Crisscrossing shadows give your eyes better perspectives and can bring
out dark spots. Some of us will run with both a hand and head light.

Peripheral vision is aided by stray light. Reflectors try to block
stray light and direct it forward for greater range. Since runners
need the most effective light about 6 feet in front of them,
reflectors are counter-productive. What's good for a camp sight is not
good for running a trail. Reflectors also tend to cause light and dark
bands and spots, which confuse contrast.

Head lights leave your hands free and shine where you are looking.
However, the light directly over your eyes can create glare, reducing
contrast. Hand lights can be easily directed and reduce glare.
However, it takes practice to keep the light's direction from swinging
widely while still using your arms.

Incandescent bulbs are last century's technology. They are dim, eat
batteries and burn out, especially when dropped.

LEDs last virtually forever. There are regular LEDs (less than 1 watt)
and "super-bright" LEDs (more than 1 watt). The brighter LEDs provide
more light, but use batteries faster.

There are lights that utilize both LEDs and xenon or halogen bulbs.
The battery-eating xenon/halogen is usually surrounded by a reflector
that gives you a very bright projecting light. This gives you the best
of both worlds – a bright halogen/xenon for the more technical
sections, and an LED to save battery light for the smoother areas.
Depending on the unit model, you may have several switch settings that
allow you to choose the brightness of light and longevity of your
batteries.

Some of us use biking lights for running. Mountain biking lights are
super bright, often using the HID technology in many newer and
expensive car headlights. The battery pack is heavy and can be
cumbersome, but it's just training. Commuter bike lights are light and
very cost effective. Most of them are easy to carry in your hand. Or,
as I have done, it's easy to create a hand strap with some duct tape.

It's better to have too much light than to have too little. Find the
right level of brightness, weight, for the speeds and trails you want
to run, and your own relative vision at night.

If you're only going to have one light, use it lower down for better
depth-perception. Many headlamps can be converted to a waist or chest
light. If you are using multiple lights, use the dimmer light on your
head - to fill but not obliterate shadows created from your lower
light(s) – and the brighter one lower down.

Colored lenses diminish the light output, but can increase the
efficiency of your night-vision. Yellow, brown, and amber block blue
light, reduce haze and glare and increase contrast making things
clearer during speed sports. Red light is good for retaining
night-vision.

Also consider weight and bulk. Some headlamps have the batteries
integrated into the light, which is smaller and lighter with no wires,
but tend to be front-heavy. Headlamps with separate battery packs are
balanced, but are heavier overall and have wires which may end up
getting mangled or worn-out. With a separate pack, keep the batteries
in a pocket or small pack/pouch. Batteries provide more power and last
longer when kept warm. Route the connection lines inside any shirts or
jackets you might take off during a run.

For short runs, rechargeable NiMH batteries work great and save money.
Lithium batteries last longer, work well in the cold, and don't go bad
sitting on the shelf, but cost a lot more. This may be a better choice
for frigid winter runs or ultra-events that last through the night(s).

Costs range from about $15 - $60. Headlamps tend to cost more than
generic flashlights. The fancier the features (LEDs+halogen
reflector+4 switch settings) can send the price over $50.

When shopping, you'll see ratings for candlepower, lumens and/or
watts. Watts refers to power usage and doesn't translate directly into
brightness. Candlepower and lumens refer to brightness. Candlepower is
a linear measurement, one candlepower is equal to a birthday candle
one foot away. A lumen is a square foot of light one foot away from
the same candle.

Some packaging shows a silhouette of the beam. This shows whether the
beam is for long range (better for hiking/camping) or shorter range
(better for runners)?

The most popular brands are Petzl, Black Diamond, Princeton Tec,
Gerber, and Brinkman, but you may find others that are also very good.

Places to shop are REI, Runners Roost, Boulder Running Company, Bent
Gate, Army/Navy Surplus, Kmart, Wal-Mart, Target, online, and at
garage sales or Goodwill. Be careful when shopping at a discount
store. You can get some great deals on good lights. However, some of
the cheap, Asian knockoffs are poorly made and won't last that long.

SNOWSHOES
Run on snowshoes? Are you crazy? Yes, but that's beside the point.
Snowshoe running is an awesome workout (you can easily burn >1,000
calories/hour), very easy to learn, low impact, almost injury free,
perhaps the warmest winter sport, and a lot of fun.

Modern snowshoes are not like the old ones you might imagine. They are
fairly small and lightweight. You don't have to waddle like a duck.
You can run with little or no change in your stride, depending on the
terrain.

There are different types of shoes for different uses. Running
snowshoes are lighter in weight, have a narrower profile and a
different cleat system than hiking and backcountry shoes. Weight
matters. When it's on your foot, at the end of the pendulum, you
notice small weight differences than when it's around your waist,
Think of the difference in how it feels to run when your shoes are
dry, versus after they get wet and full of mud.

The other main functional difference is in how the shoes track on the
snow. With backcountry shoes, the toe pivots so that the back stays on
the snow, even if you are going up an extremely steep slope. With
running shoes, the toe pivots somewhat, but the tail comes off the
snow. For running, you don't want the shoe dragging and getting caught
on rocks and sticks. Different models work somewhat differently.
However, the similar effect is that snow gets kicked up from behind,
sort of a rooster tail effect.

Racing shoes typically weight 2-2.5 lbs/pair. Racing shoes are a
little more expensive, around $250. While that sounds like a lot, they
should last for years, and come with long, sometimes lifetime
warranties. Running shoes also work well for hiking if you are
primarily going to snowshoe on packed or well established trails.
Instead, you can get a light weight hiking or sport type shoe. They
are less expensive and heavier. They still work well for running. Many
races will have free loaners available. Check in advance.

Most companies make what they call women's snowshoes. These are
basically smaller and narrower. You don't have to be a woman to use them.

Some of the more popular brands you tend to see at races include:
Atlas, Crescent Moon (Boulder based), Northern Lites, Redfeather and
Tubbs. Look for deals online. You can rent snowshoes at nordic ski
areas and many places that also rent skis. Some running stores rent
racing shoes, including Runners Roost Lakewood.

Keeping your feet warm is important. Many racers wear a neoprene sock
(e.g., Seirus or Sealskinz brand), either alone or over a think sock
liner, or Gore-tex over-sock. The cheap version of this is a plastic
shopping bag (over socks and inside shoes) and duct tape. Trail
running gaiters (small, that just cover your ankle), keep snow out of
the shoe, to keep ice building up on the shoe collar and rubbing your
foot. Don't wear cotton socks. Use wool or synthetic socks that stay
warm and dry. Most people race in running shoes. Lightweight hiking
shoes, or even light Nordic boots work well. Snowshoeing is one of the
few areas where Gore-tex running shoes really help. If you wear
running shoes, some people put a winter cycling bootie, over the shoe,
to help keep their feet warm and dry.

For clothing, wear slick outer layers. You get wet from below, even
when it's sunny, from kicking up snow, the "rooster tail" effect.
DON'T WEAR FLEECE on the outside. It acts like Velcro to snow. You
will end up covered in snow, and carrying all that extra weight. For a
similar reason, zip up pockets and cover mesh. Nylon pants and jackets
work well. Dress in layers. If you are running, you will generate a
lot of body heat and sweat.

Where to go? Pull out a map. Look for a trail. You can snowshoe many
places you might hike or mtn bike in warmer months. After a decent
snowfall in town, try trails without too many rocks. I've had good
snowshoeing at Deer Creek and Green Mountain. A little further up,
there are some good places off of Squaw Pass Rd, Echo Lake, Jones
Pass/Butler Gulch, and Berthoud Pass (off of US40). For a longer
drive, head up to Rocky Mountain National Park. Also, most of the
nordic centers have designated snowshoe trails that are easy to
follow. There, you'll need to pay a trail fee.

I think it's more fun when you get off trail and play in the powder.
Trekking through powder can be extremely tough. It can take you 45 min
to do a mile, in hip deep powder, at max effort. Powder can be good
with a group of diverse abilities. The stronger runners/hikers can
take turns breaking the trail, while the others follow behind.

Poles are optional. They provide better stability and an upper body
workout. However, you then miss working your core and hip stabilizing
muscles. They can get in the way when you are running. They are not
allowed at most races, for safety reasons.

Snowshoe races range in distance from 2km to 20mi. Don't expect your
times to reflect what you do on roads. Distances are typically not
measured precisely. Snow conditions, hills, packed trail vs.
off-trail, etc., will all affect how much time the course will take.
I've seen 5k times under 20 minutes on a packed trail, and a winning
time up to an hour when through thick powder. Most races will have
lots of first time snowshoe racers and non-runners, and people who
will walk the whole way. Please don't be intimidated. Give it a try.
There are about 15-20 snowshoe races in Colorado through the season.

There are a couple of free demo days, Winter Trails. Also, we may have
a couple of group outings. Pay attention to the calendar in future DTR
messages.
