TUESDAY SPEED
No speed workout this week due to the holiday. We'll be back after the holiday.

These workouts are for runners of all abilities. (The only exception
is for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off.
You should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.) The group stays in a compact
area (e.g., short loop or out-and-back), so no one will get left
behind. We run for time, starting and finishing together. The route is
designed typically with the hard efforts on climbs and/or
non-technical terrain; descents and rocky terrain will be easy
efforts. The purpose is to combine track-like speed workouts with
power training for hills.

The speed workouts will take place every week, as long as there is
interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with the workout
info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

THURSDAY RUN
Run location: Mt. Galbraith. The main group will meet at 6:15pm; the
early group at 5:30pm.

DTR has only run this park once before, and that was several years
ago. There's no map on the DTR site. Use the directions, route
description, and link below for a map.
http://jeffco.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R34.htm

Directions: From Highway 93, in Golden, take Golden Gate Canyon Road
west approximately 1.5 miles to the parking area and trailhead. Golden
Gate Canyon Road is ~1 ¾ mi N of the junction of highways 6, 58 & 93,
and just S of where we turn for North Table Mtn.

Run notes: This is a hiker only park. The trails are fairly narrow and
somewhat sloped (for drainage). Since we don't have much experience
here, the routes are just suggestions. Please read the map, and use
your watch to adjust your running route to finish with the group.
Start up the 1.3mi Cedar Gulch Trail.

Slower runners: do one circuit of the 1.6mi Galbraith loop, then
return down Cedar Gulch.

Intermediate runners: do two circuits, then return down Cedar Gulch.

Faster runners: Do one circuit. Go out and back on the Nightbird Gulch
trail. Then return down Cedar Gulch.

Tentative schedule:
7/12: Deer Creek
7/19: Elk Meadow, followed by party at Kendra's
7/26: Mt. Falcon, time trial

If you are new to DTR and unfamiliar with the trails, and for more

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet at the
dirt lot, at the corner of Morrison and Rooney Roads, outside the
park, at 6:00pm.

We'll jog out together to the base of the North Park Trail. Take the
bike path into the park. Instead of going right at the first bridge,
stay straight on the bike path, onto the park road, and past the
toll booth. Just past the toll booth, stay left at the Y. Follow the
road W for ~1mi. Just before the road curves L and goes uphill, go
left on the trail, cross to the right of the creek, then meet at the
3-way trail junction. This is below the binoculars symbol on the map.

The workout will be a loop from there. The first half is a gentle
uphill, the second half is up a steep hill. The recovery will be an
easy jog back down to the junction.

Bring your mtn bike if you want. You can alternate between running and
biking. The bike loop will be somewhat longer in distance, but only a
little longer in time.

If it's raining or the trails are wet, we'll do a workout on the park
roads or bike paths.

There's a movie at Red Rocks that night, so traffic might be heavy
around there.

Run location: Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn, with Beaver Brook option. The main
group will meet at 6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Parking notes: We meet at a large dirt turnout. Parking can be tight
if we get a big turnout. Please park as efficiently as possible – as
close to other vehicles as you can - and leave space for people to
park in the middle. There's additional parking by the small park, just
down the road.

Run notes: Follow the Chimney/Lookout route across Windy Saddle. About
¼ mi past Windy Saddle, the trail splits. There's a sign for the hiker-only
Beaver Brook trail. Stay right onto Beaver Brook (we normally go left).
The start of the Beaver Brook trail is rocky, crossing a couple of
boulder fields. It becomes more runable after that. Use time to
determine when to turn around, about 35-40 minutes. Return the same way.

Tentative schedule:
7/5: Mt. Galbraith?
7/12: Deer Creek
7/19: Elk Meadow, followed by party at Kendra's
7/26: Mt. Falcon, time trial

TRAIL CHAMPS
This Saturday is the USA Trail Championships, in Steamboat.
http://www.runningseries.com/races/championships.php

There are two races. The open race is at 8:30am. This is for anyone.
USATF membership is not required. Free Smartwool shirts to all
participants, trail shoes to age group winners, food, beer, and prizes.

The Championships is at 10:00am. We're expecting about 50 top runners
competing for the Championships, $5,000 in prize money, and selection
to the US Mountain team, competing at the World Mountain Running
Championships, in Switzerland, in September.

The course is 7.2mi – two 3.6mi loops, with 1,100' of climbing per
loop; 1.65mi up, 1.95 mi down. The course is on mountain bike trails -
mostly double-track and service roads. It's steep, but not that rocky.

I am the asst race dir.; John Chapman, one of the original DTR
members, and founder of ERC, is the event manager.

DTRs can set up a tent for free on John's lawn. And, you're also
invited to a BBQ at John's Sat night. Contact Adam for directions and
details.

Several of us will be pooling to Adam's Nott Creek race at Golden Gate Canyon
state park on Saturday, June 23. We'll meet in Golden near the intersection of
93 and Iowa St. Since the race starts at 8:00 let's leave the meeting place at
6:45.

From the intersection of hwys 6, 58 & 93 in Golden, go north on hwy 93
towards Boulder. After 3/4mi, turn right at the first right, Iowa,
then take the first left. There is parking just up that street. My
car is a blue '95 Toyota Corolla, in case you're looking for
something familiar.

Join us this Sunday for a run up Argentine Pass. It's a chance to get
in some climbing at elevation, and escape the heat.

Meet at at 7:00am, at the Stegosaurus lot, at I70, Red Rocks exit,
#259. We'll carpool from there. This is the lot we use for the
Hogback/Matthews Winters run.
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/Hogback-Matthews-Winters-dir.html

Argentine Pass is Colorado's highest pass, at 13,192'. We'll drive to
Silverplume, exit 226, 2 miles past Georgetown. There's a big lot just
off the highway.

The route is easy to follow. Starting under I70, 9,100', you start up
a single-track, climbing ~900' in ~3mi. The route then becomes a 4wd
road to the top. If you make it to the top, it's another 8 mi or so.
You can continue down the other side, dropping 1,900' in ~2.25mi, or
follow the divide 2.5mi N to Grays peak. I'll bring some maps.

The route is out-and-back, so you can turn whenever you want. I'll run
about 3 hours round trip, turning around at about 2 hours. I don't
expect to make it all the way to the pass. You can certainly run
shorter. We'll figure out how far people want to run when we arrange
the carpools in the morning.

Mtn biking is an option too, either instead of or in addition
to running. For example, you can bike part way up, to the Waldorf Mine, lock
your bike, then run to the summit. The route is good for biking.

If you're coming from Evergreen or further west, drop me a line and we
can meet you on the way up I70 (e.g., Floyd Hill). Otherwise, no
response needed. Just show up Sunday morning.

If you're running late or are lost, call Adam on Sunday morning,
303-870-0487.

+ Tuesday speed workout
+ Thursday evening run, Alpine Rescue benefit
+ Other DTR affiliated runs: Sat Evergreen, Sun Golden
+ Carpools: Nott Creek, Breckenridge, Steamboat
+ Race volunteers needed
+ Talks, Clinics, and other Non-Race Events

+ Discounts for DTRs

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Mt. Falcon, UPPER LOT. Meet at
6:00pm.

Workout: We'll do a counter-clockwise loop up the Tower and Meadow
trails. Starting from the lower junction of the trails, we'll run hard
up (an easy climb) the Meadow Trail, go left on the Tower Trail, and
continue hard up (steep) to the observation tower. Jog easy down the
other side back to the Meadow trail. Then, repeat.

++++++++++
THURSDAY RUN & BENEFIT
Run Location: O'Fallon Park. The main group will meet at 6:15pm; the
early group at 5:30pm.

Note: This is the first day of summer, and the longest day of the
year. Sunset is at 8:32pm, with civil twilight at 9:05pm. Summer
begins at 12:06pm.

Driving tips: O'Fallon is just 2 mi up the road from Lair, ~6.5mi up from
Morrison. To avoid the congestion on C470, between I70 and Morrison, sometimes
it's faster to stay on I70, past C470, to the next exit, #259, Red Rocks. Go
left and take the road 3 mi down to Morrsion. Then, turn right and head up the
canyon. There is no concert at Red Rocks on Thursday (www.redrocksonline.com),
so this way shouldn't have much traffic.

Run notes: This is a new starting location for DTR, although we'll be
running parts of the trails we run from Lair. Starting from O'Fallon
allows us to get to parts of the trails we don't have time to reach
from Lair. Since we haven't run from here as a group, the suggested
routes on the DTR site are a guess of how much time it will take. Be
prepared to adjust/shorten your route, especially if you are going to
the Alpine Rescue benefit.

Benefit: After the run, head up the hill to the Little Bear for a
benefit for the Alpine Rescue Team (ART). Todd Holmes, a DTR regular,
is one of the leaders of the all-volunteer ART. There will be food, a
live band, a silent auction and a raffle. Raffle prizes include a pair
of tickets on Frontier Airlines, and a new Yeti mtn. bike. The Little Bear is
~3mi up from O'Fallon.

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at South Table. Meet at NREL lot at
6:00pm.

Workout: There will be a long warm-up, ~ 2 miles. Then, we'll do a
loop that is about 0.3-0.4 long, a short rise, a couple of short rocky
sections, but pretty good footing overall. If you are late, meet us at
"13" on the map.

If it's wet or there's lightning, we'll do an alternate workout on the
roads nearby. Still meet at NREL.

THURSDAY RUN & POTLUCK
Everyone is invited to the run, even if you can't stay for the
potluck. Everyone is invited to the potluck, even if you can't make
the run.

Run Location: Apex. MEET AT KRISTEN'S HOUSE, NOT AT THE TRAILHEAD.
Directions below. The main group will meet at 6:15pm; the early group
at 5:30pm.

Run notes: To get to Apex, take the bike path behind the school (which is across
the street). It takes you directly to the trailhead (about 0.6 mi). At Apex,
we'll run the clockwise route. There are trail signs at all key junctions. If
you are doing the Enchanted Forest trail, most of us find it easier to go up
that trail and back down the Apex trail. Look for a small bridge, at a sharp
left, about 0.3mi past the Sluicebox trail.

Potluck: Kristin will have some hamburgers, buns, mustard, ketchup,
etc. DTR will supply plastic/paper plates, napkins, and utensils. You
can bring something else to grill, hot or cold food (e.g., chili,
pasta salads), salads, side dishes, desserts, drinks (e.g., beer,
wine, sodas, juice), etc.

Feel free to drop off at their house, anything that needs to stay hot
or cold, before the run.

Can't or forget to bring something? That's OK. You are welcome to show
up anyway. There's usually plenty of extra food. This is a great way
for newer members to get to know the regulars, and vice-versa.

Potluck/meeting location: 461 Crawford St., Golden, 80401

Directions: Get thee to Heritage Rd. and Kimball Ave (directions to
there below). Go W on Kimball. Take the third right on Crawford St.,
after crossing the bike path. The house is ~200m past the elementary
school. There are small numbers above the garage and on the mailboxes.
Look for some reddish stones standing upright in their front yard, "a
mini stonehenge!"

From Denver: Take I70 to Colfax, or 6th ave. to the end of the
freeway, then left onto Colfax. Go west, under C470, towards Heritage
Square. Where the road curves left. Go right onto Heritage road.
Kimball is past the fire station, the second left, at a traffic light.
Turn left and follow the directions above.

From the south, via C470: Take C470 to the end, and merge onto hwy 6
west. Immediately get into the left lane. Turn left at the first
street, Heritage Rd., a traffic light. Go ~2/3 mi, under the
pedestrian bridge, to the light at Kimball. Turn right and follow the
directions above.

From Boulder: Take hwy 93 south to Golden. Continue on hwy 6, past
Lookout, to the next light, Heritage. Heritage is where the road
curves left. The Taj Mahal, aka the Jefferson County building, is on
the left. Turn right at the light and follow the directions above.

From Evergreen and the west: Take I70 to the Red Rocks exit, #259. Go
left and down the hill ~1¼ mi. Just past Heritage Square, where the
road curves right, go left onto Heritage Rd. and follow the directions
above.

Tentative schedule:
6/21: Lair `o the Bear (no picnic)
6/28: Hogback
7/5: Lookout/Chimney Gulch

There seems to be a perception that Genesee is too far a drive, and a
lot of you don't want to drive up the hill. It's not.

Genesee - Gudy Gaskill, Chief Hosa and Boettcher Mansion - takes no
less time to get to than most of the time front range trails. From the
hwy 6 & I-70 junction, it only takes 10 minutes. That's the same or
less time that it takes to get to:
Mt Falcon - when you consider C470 traffic and driving through
Morrison. It's almost never heavy on I70 up the hill.
Red Rocks
Bear Creek Lake Park
North Table
Lookout/Chimney Gulch
Lair of the Bear
Deer Creek
South Valley
White Ranch

Genesee takes only a couple of minutes longer than Green, Apex or South Table.

Gudy Gaskill is a beautiful trail. There are some great views from a couple of
places. There are not bikes allowed on almost all of the route, and it's very
lightly used by hikers. It's one of the few runs that starts flat and downhill,
rather then starting with a climb. Most of the run is in the trees, and well
sheltered from wind and weather.

I hope some of you will reconsider joining us this Thursday, and in the future
when we go up the hill.

IN THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE:
+ Tuesday speed workout
+ Thursday evening run
+ Other DTR affiliated runs: Sat Evergreen, Sun Golden
+ Race volunteers needed
+ Talks, Clinics, and other Non-Race Events
+ Race calendar – NEW EVENTS ADDED
+ Other area clubs and runs
+ Discounts for DTRs

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at the Gudy Gaskill Trail. Meet at
the school at 6:00pm.

Workout: I have two different workouts in mind. I'll poll the group at
the start. If you're late, look for us along the ridge, around "B" or
"TR1". We'll be doing a loop either A-TR1-B-A, or SR1-TR2-H-J.

Run Location: Gudy Gaskill Trail. The main group will meet at 6:15pm; the early
group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: Navigating can be difficult. Please bring a map and the
directions. The key turns junctions are D, E and F, and G for the long
route. There are some great views, overlooking Clear Creek Canyon,
from the northern part of the GG trail, and at the top of the climb on
the long route, BB4. We usually stop and take in the views..

Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. Everyone is invited to join
us for dinner after the run.

Tentative schedule:
6/14: Apex, potluck party at Kristin's. We'll start from their house,
not the Apex lot. Details next week.
6/21: Lair `o the Bear (no picnic)
6/28: Hogback
7/5: Lookout/Chimney Gulch

Imogene Pass Run registration opens June 1. This race will sell out
fast. Registration information will be posted at
http://www.imogenerun.com

The race is Sept 8. It’s 17.1mi, from Ouray (7,810’), to Telluride
(8,820’), over Imogene Pass (13,120’).

TUESDAY SPEED
Rained out this week.

The speed workouts will take place every Tuesday, at 6:00pm, as long
as there is interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with
the workout info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

Mtn bike: Designed for people training for off-road tris/dus, but
anyone is welcome. Bring your mountain bike (as long as it's dry). You
will alternate between running and biking, with quick transitions, and
a slightly different loop for the bike. The loops will be designed to
avoid conflicts between the runners and bikers.

++++++++++
THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: North Table Mountain. The main group will meet at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: This is a lollipop route â€" a big loop in the middle, with
an out-and-back at the start/finish. The loop is fairly long, and
there aren’t any short cuts. So, slower runners should do this as an
out-and-back. The trail takes a right turn at a service road; the
service road goes N. This is shortly before the Midway mark on the
map. If you haven’t reached this turn in 35 minutes (for the main
group), you should turn around and return the way you took on the way out.

Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. Everyone is invited to join
us for dinner afterwards. At the end of the run, we decide as a group
where we go.

Tentative schedule:
6/7: Gudy Gaskill
6/14: Apex, potluck party at Kristin’s.
6/21: Lair ‘o the Bear (no picnic)
6/28: Hogback
7/5: Lookout/Chimney Gulch

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Bear Creek Lake Park or Red
Rocks, depending on the weather. Meet at the dirt lot, at the corner
of Morrison and Rooney Roads, at 6:00pm.

If it's dry, we'll jog out together to the base of the North Park
Trail (see map), and repeat the workout from two weeks ago. Take the
bike path into the park. Instead of going right at the first bridge,
stay straight on the bike path, onto the park road. Just past the toll
booth, stay left at the Y. Follow the road W for ~1mi. Just before the
road curves L and goes uphill, go left on the trail, cross to the
right of the creek, then meet at the 3-way trail junction. The
workout will be on a short trail loop from there.

If it's wet, but not to bad, we'll head the other way to red Rocks.
Cross the road, then go right on the bike path, W, into and through
Morrison. Continue up hwy 74 ~200 yards past the elementary school,
then turn right into Red Rocks park. At the fork ("B" on the Red Rocks
map), go left and continue up around the first two switchbacks. We'll
do repeats along the road, up-and-back to the ampitheatre.

If it's raining hard, you're welcome to show up, but I won't be there.

The speed workouts will take place every week, as long as there is
interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with the workout
info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

Join us for a trail run this weekend on some of the best forest
trails in the area.

When: Saturday, May 26, at 8:30am.
Where: Deer Creek Canyon Park
How Long: Most will run for 60-90 minutes, some perhaps longer.

Directions To The Park:
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/DeerCreekCanyonPark-dir.html

Trail Map:
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/DeerCreekCanyonPark.html
(or grab a map at the trailhead)

Deer Creek Canyon provides many options, ranging from a 2.8 mile loop
up to 13 miles, and plenty of options in between, all on some of the
sweetest single track and double track around.

Let's try to keep the entire group together at a casual pace for the first 1.6
miles (Meadowlark Trail). Then at the bridge we'll break into smaller groups by
pace, as we head up "The Wall" to the upper trails.

THURSDAY RUN/PICNIC/BIKE
Run Location: South Valley Park. The main group will meet at 6:15pm;
the early group at 5:30pm. If you want to mountain bike before the
run, please be ready to ride by 5:15. You'll be able to get in a
~50minute ride, with time to change before the run.

Run notes: The Lyons Back trail is closed for construction. To add
some distance (those of you in the faster/longer groups), you can
either take the Rattlesnake Gulch Trail to Deer Creek and back, and/or
the Coyote Song trail to Deer Creek Cyn Road and back. Bring a watch
and monitor your time. Plan to finish between 7:20-7:30 so we'll have
enough daylight left for the picnic. Bring warm/dry clothes for after
the run. It cools quickly in the canyon.

Picnic: Stick around after the run for a potluck picnic at the park.
Bring food and drink to share with others. Plates, napkins, utensils,
cups, etc., will be provided. If you forget to bring food, please join
us anyway. There's almost always more than enough food. This is a good
chance to get to know more about your fellow runners than you can pick
up in a conversation while running uphill.

Things to bring: pasta/green salads, fruit, side dishes,
chips/veggies/dips, desserts, juice/sodas/beer/wine. Be creative, or
keep it simple. Make it yourself, or buy it already made. If you need
to shop, there are several markets (Safeway, King Soopers, Vitamin
Cottage) just E of C-470 on Ken Caryl Blvd, the same exit you use to
the run.

There was a rather disappointing turnout at the meeting last night –
only about a dozen people, only two trail runners. The Open Space
board and staff can only respond to the voices they hear. If they
don't hear from us, development plans and policies will cater to other
park/trail users. If you couldn't make the meeting last night, have
ideas or comments you'd like to share, and/or would like to find out

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet at the
dirt lot, at the corner of Morrison and Rooney Roads, at 6:00pm.

We'll jog out together to the base of the North Park Trail. Take the
bike path into the park. Instead of going right at the first bridge,
stay straight on the bike path, onto the par road, and past the
tollbooth. Just past the toll booth, stay left at the Y. Follow the
road W for ~1mi. Just before the road curves L and goes uphill, go
left on the trail, cross to the right of the creek, then meet at the
3-way trail junction. The workout will be on a short trail loop from
there. If the trails are wet, we'll continue out the road to the
Mountain View lot, and run repeats on the hill to the top of the dam.

Join us every week for speed work on trails. Look for a separate
e-mail, with the location, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

This workout is for runners of all abilities. (The only exception is
for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off. You
should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.) The group stays in a compact
area (e.g., short loop), so no one will get left behind. We run for
time, starting and finishing together.

The workouts are designed typically with the hard efforts on climbs
and/or non-technical terrain; descents and rocky terrain will be easy
efforts. The purpose is to combine track-like speed workouts with
power training for hills.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Green Mountain. Meet in the Rooney Road lot. The main
group will meet at 6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: There have been some changes to the trails, although the
map covers the main routes. The Utah trail is now called the Hayden trail.

Reminder: Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run.
Location TBD by the group, after the run.

In addition to the other regularly scheduled trail groups (Evergreen
Sat, Golden Sun), here are a couple of other runs you can join us on
this weekend.

Saturday, May 12
FREE guided preview of the Castlewood Canyon race course (race is May
20). We'll go at a fairly easy pace, and wait and regroup along the
course.

Meet at the Broadway/I25 park-n-ride lot at 7:30am to carpool. If
you're coming from further S or SW, meet at the Lincoln/I25 lot at
8:00, or at the park at 8:30.

There's no need to reply. Just show up. However, if you are meeting us
at Lincoln/I25, please send a message so we know to stop and look for
you there.

More info and directions at http://www.runuphillracing.com/

++++++++++
Sunday, May 13 (yes I know it's Mother's Day)
Carpool to the Incline Club (IC) run, and to Garden of the Gods (GoG).

The IC runs start promptly, at 8am, from Manitou Springs. The IC runs
are great for those of you training for Pikes. They usually have a
large group with a wide range of abilities for their Sunday runs. Info
and maps for those runs at http://inclineclub.com/

Mike and I (Adam) are planning to run the GoG 10-mile course. We'll
start from the same place as the IC. You can join us as we preview
that course. The GoG race is June 10. It's one of the better (for me,
that means not flat) and scenic road races around. Info on that race
is http://www.gardentenmile.com/

The carpool can work for both IC and GoG runners. If you're doing the longer IC
run, we'll drop you off for the start, then wait for you after our GoG run.

Meet at the Broadway/I25 lot at 6:30am. The IC runs start promptly, so
we'll need to leave shortly thereafter. Alternate meeting locations
can be arranged. Use the link for the Castlewood preview (above) to
get directions and maps to the Broadway lot.

I hope that many DTRs will attend, whether or not you run with us. There are 1,300+ on the list. Please let your voice be heard.
Important Meeting for

Trail Runners Hikers, Walkers, Bird Watchers, Geologist, Naturalists, Botanists, and other pedestrian users of

Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) Parks and Trails

When: Monday, May 14, 2007, 6:30 – 8:00 pm
Where: Jefferson County Open Space, Ponderosa Room.
700 Jefferson County Parkway #100
Golden, CO 80401

Why: We need your input on:
  • What you like and don't like about the JCOS parks and trails.
  • What is your desired experience at the parks, and how is JCOS meeting those experiences.
  • What you'd like to see more of at the parks.
  • What you'd like see changed.
  • Where you'd like to see the parks go in the future? This includes issues such as trailhead size/locations, separate access for different user groups, trail design and placement, parking, facilities (e.g., signs, bathrooms, benches, trash bins, park hours, etc.
  • Development plans - for example, on the newly acquired North and South Table Mountain properties.
  • Wildlife, ecosystems, sensitive areas, natural resources, etc.
  • How to balance preservation and wild characteristics with recreational uses.
  • Neighborhood concerns
  • Conflicts with other users and pets, and how to resolve those issues.

JCOS management is very open to input for park users. However, they can only respond to the voices they hear. Bikers and Equestrians, the other representative groups on the Trail Use Task Force (TUTF), are very well organized. It's important that the pedestrian groups become organized so that JCOS can address our needs too.

Organized by:
  • Eric Finstick, Hiker Representative on the TUTF
  • Dru Dunham, TUTF Alternate
  • Adam Feerst, Denver Trail Runners

Trail Use Task Force Mission Statement:
The purpose of the Trail Use Task Force is to identify trail conflicts and make recommendations for their solution to the Open Space Advisory Committee, the Open Space staff, and the and the BCC (Board of County Commissioner) that will not deprive any user of a safe, quality experience when using the parks and trails while considering protection of the natural resource.

Thanks to all of the new people who showed up last week, and the last
few weeks. It's always good to get new faces and new energy into the
group. I especially like it that we are getting people from a variety
of abilities. The more people we have, from a wide range of abilities,
the more likely it is that everyone will have someone to run with.

And, thanks to everyone who showed up and brought food for the party
after the run. We had a great turnout, and great food, on short
notice. A special thanks to Mark for hosting us that night. We will be
having a picnic about once/month through the summer.

++++++++++
TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Red Rocks. Meet at the Trading
Post at 6:00pm. After a warm-up, 10-20 minutes, regroup at the bottom
of the hill below the Trading Post, "L" on the map. The main workout
will be hill repeats – hard uphill from L to TP (the lower TP lot),
about 2-3 min; jog easy back downhill; repeat for about 25 minutes,
about 4-7 repeats. Do an easy 5-10 min jog to cool down. I (Adam) won't be
there. Mike and Warren will be in charge.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Mount Falcon, lower lot. Uphill time trial. The main
group will meet at 6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: This is the first of our regular Falcon time trials (TT) of
the season. We do this regularly as a way to gauge your fitness and
track your progress through the season. The TT course is ~2.5mi,
~1,400' uphill. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are. The times
have ranged from 22:45 to 55:00. We stagger the start so that everyone
finishes at about the same time. Then, we do a short, easy run
together at the top, as a group, before heading back down.

Start times: For the first run of the season, pick your start time
(below) based on an average 10k (flat road) pace. A lot of first
timers start earlier than necessary, then end up waiting quite a while
at the top for the rest of us to finish.
Start (after first group) – Pace/mi for 10km
0:00 – 10:00/mi
4:00 – 9:00/mi
8:00 - 8:00/mi
12:00 - 7:00/mi
15:00 - 6:00/mi

At the finish, please wait for everyone, then report your time (BRING
A STOP WATCH!). I (Adam) will carry up a pen and paper. Give me a
minute or two to catch my breath. If you start/leave early, please
record your time on paper left on my windshield (white Prius, lic
plate RUNUPHL), or e-mail it later. We use these times to set the
handicap starts the next time.

Reminder: Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run.
Location TBD by the group, after the run.

After the run, join us for a Tres de Mayo potluck. If you can't make
it to the run, please come to the potluck.

When: Starting at about 7:30pm (maybe 7 for the early group runners),
or whenever you get there. Until about 9, or when Mark kicks us out.

Where: Home of Mark Chase, a regular in the early group. 259 Gardenia
Ct, Golden, CO 80401. Map it online. If you get lost, 303-908-8118.

General directions from NREL: return to Denver West Marriott Blvd. Go
right, over I70, past Denver West Shopping Center, to Colfax. Turn
right on Colfax, past the shooping centers, to Indiana. Turn left on
Indiana. Proceed up the hill, just under the 6th ave fwy. Take the
first left, after the fwy. Then, take the 2nd right onto Flora Way.
Just after the left bend, turn right onto 3rd Ave. Take the first left
onto Gardenia Ct.

What to bring: Hot or cold food (e.g., chili, pasta salads),
chips/veggie snacks and dips, green salads, desserts, drinks (e.g.,
beer, wine, sodas, juice). Mexican themes would be nice, but not
required. There's a Wild Oats, at the Denver West shopping area, where
you can get some hot and cold food. It would be nice if at least some
people brought some main dishes, rather than all chips and cookies.

Plastic plates, utensils, napkins, cups, etc., will be provided.

Can't or forget to bring something? That's OK. You are welcome to shoe
up anyway. There's usually plenty of extra food. This is a great way
for newer members to get to know the regulars, and vice-versa.

Thanks Mark.

TUESDAY SPEED
Join us every week for speed work on trails. Look for a separate
e-mail, with the location, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

This is for runners of all abilities. (The only exception is for
beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off. You
should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.)

The workouts are designed typically with the hard efforts on up hills
or non-technical terrain. The group stays in a compact area (e.g.,
short loop), so no one will get left behind. We run for time, starting
and finishing together.

++++++++++
THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: South Table Mtn. Meet at the NREL lot. The main group
will start at 6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: There should be a new map and route description up on the
web site by Wed. This is a fairly easy run physically, but the route
finding can be difficult. There are numerous social trails, no trail
signs, and few landmarks. If you haven't run here before, please bring
the map and notes with you. We will try to make sure that everyone has
a veteran to run with. There are not bathrooms or changing facilities
at the trail. The closest bathrooms are at the Denver West shopping
area (just the other side of I70), or the Marriott.

Reminder: Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run.

Thursday is May 3. Does anyone want to host a Tres de Mayo potluck party?

This Tuesday's speed workout will be at Chief Hosa. Meet just below
the lodge. We'll leave at 6:10pm.

Warm-up: Jog together, up the road to the right of the lodge. At ~0.7
mi, at the 3-way junction, go left, down the fairly steep dirt road,
to the bottom, near I-70. Alternatively (i.e., if you are late), you
can take the flatter road to the left of the lodge, ~3/4mi, and meet
us at the bottom of the hill.

Workout: Hill repeats on the steep dirt road. From the bottom, run
hard (a little faster than 5km race effort) up the hill. Run either to
the 3-way junction or 2:30, whichever comes first. Jog back down to
the bottom. Repeat for about 25 minutes, however many repeats you can
get done in that time (3-6 for most people).

Then, we'll jog together back to the cars.

Everyone is welcome to the speed workouts, regardless of speed or
ability. We stay in a compact area, so no one will get left behind.
The only exception is for beginning runners or those coming back after
a long lay-off. You should build a good base, with lower effort, and
gradually longer runs, before you start doing high intensity training.

Bring a warm clothing for the warm-up and cool-down, and water, if you
want, to drink between the repeats. You can leave the extra clothes
and water on the side of the trail where we do the workout. Bring dry
clothes to change into after the run.

If you are unfamiliar with Chief Hose or need directions, please go to
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com and click on maps.

Join us this Sunday morning for a group run on Oh My God road.

OMG The road goes from Idaho Springs to Central City. It's a chance to
get in some good climbing and elevation without dealing with snow.

OMG is ~5.8mi & 1,800'+ up, then back. It starts at 7,500', and tops out at
9,340'. The bottom ~3/4 mi is paved. There's another ~1/2mi paved at the top.
The rest is a dirt road. It's non-technical, so you can use road shoes. You can
turn around before the top if you don't want to run that far (you can also go
longer). We'll decide as a group how long (time) we want to run so that everyone
finishes at about the same time.

OMG is the site of a race that RMRR used to put on, and that I used to
direct. Different versions of the race went 8 or 9 miles.

Meet at the Cold Spring Park-n-Ride at 8:00am. 4th and Union, in
Lakewood. Take 6th ave. to the Simms/Union exit. Go south. Take the
first left at 4th, then left into the lot.
http://www.rtd-denver.com/parknride/index.html

If coming from Evergreen, we'll pick you up at the bottom of Floyd
Hill (jct of hwy 65 & I70), at 8:30am.

Run location: Start on the bridge, at 23rd ave. and Colorado Blvd., in
Idaho Springs. Take I70 W to the first Idaho Springs exit, #241a. This
lets you off onto Colorado Blvd., the main street. Continue W for
about 0.8mi to a park (grassy area) on the right, just past the
Safeway on the left. Park along the right.

TUESDAY SPEED
This Tuesday's speed workout will be at Forsberg Park on Green Mtn. If
it's rainy, we'll go to Red Rocks, Trading Post. We will start at 6:00pm.

Directions: Forsberg Park is located at 16200 W Alameda Parkway,
Lakewood. It's along the west extension of Alameda, ~1mi west of the
junction with S. Bear Creek Blvd and Jewell Ave, and ~1/2mi E of C470.
Look up the directions for Green Mtn on the DTR site. Then:

From the north, continue past the Rooney lot, ~1/3mi, to the stop
sign. Turn left. Cross over C470. There is a large sign for the park,
and a sign for the City of Lakewood. Park in the dirt lot on the right
(past the construction area).

From the south, follow the directions up Rooney Rd to Alameda. There,
turn right to the park.

The workout will be hill repeats – a series of short, hard uphill
sprints, with a long recovery. The goal is build power for the hills
and develop the fast twitch muscle fibers. We'll do the repeats for
20-25 minutes, including the rest interval, however many you get done
in the time. Everyone will start and finish at the same time, and run
back-and-forth in the same location.

Workout location: From the Forsberg lot, carefully cross Alameda, to
the north side, and access the Green Mtn trails through the fence
opening to the right. For a warm-up, we'll jog out-and-back on the
trail, to the left. For the repeats, we'll either be running on the
hill straight up from the opening to Alameda, or, more likely, up the
trail to the right a bit. Look for us about 100 yards up to the right,
by the fenced off area.

The speed work is for runners of all abilities. The group will stay in
a compact area, so no one will get left behind. The only exception is
for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off. You
should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.

Bring a warm clothing for the warm-up and cool-down, and water, if you
want, to drink between the repeats. You can leave the extra clothes
and water on the side of the trail where we do the workout. Bring dry
clothes to change into after the run.

If you are unfamiliar with the trails at Green Mtn or need directions
to the lot, please go to http://dtr.runuphillracing.com and click on maps.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Mt. Falcon, UPPER LOT. The main group will start at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: Everyone should take the Parmalee trail, the first right.
From there, slower runners should go back via the Meadow and Castle
trails. Intermediate runners should do the inner Old Ute loop. Faster
runners should do the Devils Elbow loop. We usually run these
counter-clockwise. Please review these options on the map.

Bike/run from the bottom: Start early and mtn. bike or run up from the
bottom. We'll have to start no later than 5:15pm in order to make it
to the upper lot in time, without going too hard.

SOUTH TABLE MOUNTAIN
TONIGHT, WED, Jefferson County Open Space (JEFFCO) is holding an open
house to talk about and get input for plans on developing South Table
Mountain. The meeting is from 6-8pm, at the American Mountaineering
Center, 710 10th Street, Golden. More info on the meeting at:
http://jeffco.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R148.htm

It's important that they hear from trail runners. JEFFCO is great
about working with the public. However, they can't make plans for what
they don't hear about. Some of the past meetings have been attended by
lots of neighborhood activists and conservationists, and mountain
bikers. While their wishes are important, it's also important that
they hear from trail runners.

South Table is very convenient, and is one of the few "real" trails
that doesn't require you to start up a long steep uphill. I think it's
also a trail that lends itself to night usage; officially, all JEFFCO
parks close at dark. However, with our input, they might be willing to
open some of their parks at night.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Bear Creek Lake Park. The main group will start at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

I (Adam) am going to need a ride to/from the run, not necessarily from the same
person. I live in Park Hill. I can meet you near downtown or Cherry Creek, etc.

Run notes: Once again, the forecast calls for rain/snow. And I thought
May was the cruelest month. If it's wet, we'll run the roads and bike
paths in the park. WE DON'T RUN ON MUDDY TRAILS! If it's dry, we'll
run the trails in the park. Be prepared for either. PLEASE READ THE
MAP & ROUTE DESCRIPTION if you haven't run here before. The trails can
be confusing. You might want to bring the map with you. The road/path
route is fairly straightforward. You can also get more info at

TUESDAY SPEED
This Tuesday's speed workout will be at Green Mtn. Meet at the Rooney
Road lot, ready to run, at 6:00pm.

The workout will be hill repeats, ~30-40 second hard uphill sprints;
walk down for a full recovery, ~1:30. Repeat for 20-25 minutes,
however many you get done in the time. Everyone will start and finish
together.

Start with an easy jog warm-up to the hill, ~10 min. Then, the
repeats. Then an easy jog back to the cars.

On the repeats, run hard for ~30 seconds. Only go hard until your form
starts to break down, and maybe a few strides more. Don't try to make
it all the way to the top. Then, walk/jog easy to the bottom, and repeat.

Workout location: From the lot, run up the paved path and across the
bridge. Continue straight, up the service road (wide dirt), for about
300 yards. Take the single-track trail to the left. The trail starts
flat, then there's a steep drop, followed by a steep climb, then
another steep descent. Regroup at the bottom of the secend steep
climb. The hill repeats will be on this second hill.

Bring dry
clothes to chang into after the run.

If you are unfamiliar with the trails at Green Mtn or need directions
to the lot, please go to http://dtr.runuphillracing.com and click on maps.

I (Adam) will not be there. Mike Robbert will lead the way.

SOUTH TABLE MOUNTAIN OPEN HOUSE
Jefferson County Open Space (JEFFCO) is holding an open house to talk
about and get input for plans on developing South Table Mountain. The
meeting is at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th Street,
Golden.

South Table is very convienent, and is one of the few "real" trails
that doesn't require you to start up a long steep uphill. I think it's
also a trail that lends itself to night usage; officially, all JEFFCO
parks close at dark.

This evening's run will be at Red Rocks. We will not run at Apex.

Recent reports are that "APEX IS MUDDY!" DTR does not run on muddy trails. Running (or riding/hiking) on muddy trails speeds erosion and damages the trail for future users.

Also, there's a chance it might rain/snow this evening.

Meet at the Trading Post. If it's dry, we will run to and on the Matthews Winters trails. If it's wet, we'll stay on the roads around Red Rocks (hilly, little traffic).

WEEKEND RUN WITH JOE
Joe Wolf is inviting runners to join him for a long run, this Sat, at
Chatfield.

"What: 6.5 mile run, @ Chatfield, Blue Sky Loop (My suggested name
for Dan's loop) - I plan to run it 6 times.

When: This Saturday, April 7 @ 6:00 AM, 7:10 AM, 8:20 AM, 9:30 AM,
10:40 AM, 11:50 AM, 1:00 PM. Okay, only 6 AM is definite, I will have
a clipboard on my truck - Red Ford Ranger pickup. Each runner can
write their Start Time, Number of loops planned, and split time on
your way by. That way, any runners that start later can have an idea
of how long they need to wait for a running partner.

Where: Waterton Canyon Lot, the second one (directly across from
Waterton Canyon, but we will be exiting the lot in the opposite
direction, into Chatfield.) There is a very posh shit-hole, complete
with a permanent structure, TP and chilly updrafts at the start,
another one about 100 yds from the start and another about 2.5 miles
out. Lots of trees and leaves after that."

THURSDAY RUN & FIREWORKS

This Thursday is the annual E-Days fireworks show at the Colo School
of Mines (CSM). This is the best fireworks show in the state. Think of
students, smart engineers, given free reign to blow stuff up as a
school project. The show takes place at the CSM stadium, in Golden,
near 12th & Birch. It starts around 9pm, and goes for about 30
minutes. It's free. Bring warm clothes to change into after the run.
If you can't make the run, just show up for the show.

Run Location: Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn. The main group will start at

Be prepared for either. Both routes (road and trail) are fairly simple
out-and-backs. Sometimes we go up the trail, and down the road. The
road route is ~5 minutes longer to/from Windy Saddle. Bring a watch so
you know when to turn around. Sunset is at 7:22; civil twilight at
