Winter got off to a bang in Colorado this year. DTR will continue
through the winter. However, because of the cold and dark, the nature
of the runs changes. Below is information about winter running with
DTR, as well as general winter running tips. Topics contained are:
+ DTR Winter Mode
+ DTR winter run locations
+ Dealing with ice: Screwshoes and other ice devices
+ Lights
+ Snowshoeing

WINTER MODE
DTR continues to run through the winter, at dark, sometimes on ice and
snow. However, the runs take on a different character.

Over the winter, the turnout is usually lower. You have to be a little
crazy, sometimes, to run in the cold and dark.

When it's cold, we don't stand around much before and after the runs.
We may wait in our cars until just before the start of the run. We
won't take a lot of time to go over the route, or spend much time on
introductions. Come to dinner after the runs. We'll take more time to
do introductions and socialize inside, where it's warm.

We are less likely to stop and wait (in the cold) at key
intersections. Everyone is welcome, and I do want to encourage you to
join us, but be prepared to run on your own. If you are unfamiliar
with the trails, please review the route in advance and, perhaps,
bring a map with you. Use the trail rating ("N" means navigational
difficulty) to see which trails are easy to follow and when you might
need a map.

The exception to this is our full moon runs. These runs are meant to
be social, not hard workouts. We do try to keep everyone pretty close
together, and regroup at key intersections.

You will need a light over the winter (maybe not on the full moon).
Sometimes, you will have to deal with ice. More on these below.

You will want to have warm, dry clothes to change into quickly after
the run – probably something different than nice, work clothes.

WINTER ROUTES
We will continue to run some of the trails over the winter. We usually
stay away from the more technical trails and those that tend to get
icy. We also run some flat and/or paved locations.

Some of our best runs have been in the snow. I remember cutting virgin
tracks on Green Mountain – like being in the wilderness, yet so close
to town. Or, running up Chimney Gulch, after a fresh snowfall, where
the snow covered the rocks making it safer and smoother than running
on a track. Don't be afraid of the snow and ice.

++++++++++
ICE
We can't always avoid ice and snow. Here are some tricks for making
that easier.

There are several tools to help you when running on ice. There are
devices that slip on your shoes including Yaktrax, Get-A-Grip,
STABILicers, and GripOns. These cost $15-$50. They easily slip on most
running shoes. These devices (and screwshoes, below) work best on ice
and hard packed snow. They don't help much in deep, soft powder. They
can fall off in deeper and softer snow.

Many of us use screwshoes. It's a simple and cheap way to convert your
shoes to ice runners. You put sheet metal screws into your shoe, point
up. Yes, point up. It's the hex head that grips the ice. You don't
feel the point. They don't ruin your shoes (the rubber seals around
the hole when you take them out in the spring). Although, you have to
be careful when putting them into Nikes, Asics, or other shoes with
air/gel pockets. A few screws across the back and outside of the heel,
and the ball of the foot, are all it takes. I'll bring a pair to the
next several runs to show, even if they're not needed that day. For
more information, "How To" and pictures, go to
http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm

When running on ice, with or without traction devices, you want to use
a light, quick stride, and stay up on the balls of your feet – think
of running on hot coals. This will help keep you nimble and safe.
Learning to run with this kind of stride will make you more efficient
on dry ground. So, running on ice can actually be good for you.

Consider getting some neoprene (e.g., Sealskinz, Seirus) or Gore-tex
socks to help keep your feet warm and dry.

LIGHTS
Choosing a light is about finding the right combination of brightness,
weight, cost and comfort.

The first choice is hand vs. headlight. Both have their advantages and
disadvantages.

Headlights leave your hands free, and the light shines where you look.
Disadvantages are that coming from above, the light can create shadows
that are hard to pick up. When it's wet or very cold, the light
reflects off the rain/snow, or mist from your breath, which can make
it hard to see. Even the best fitting light will bounce a little. The
brighter lights will have a noticeable batter pack. Some batteries are
built into the light unit, in front. This can extend the center of
gravity away from the head, adding to the bounce. A battery pack in
the back of the head reduces the bounce, but the feel takes getting
used to. Some have the batteries in a separate pouch, which you can
string through your jacket, and keep in a pocket or pack. This is a
little more complicated, but the pack gives you more power, gets the
weight off your head, and keeping the battery warm (pocket of pack)
extends the life.

Hand lights generally give you more bang (i.e., brighter) for the
buck. They can be more comfortable than carrying a light on your head.
However, the light moves with your arm swing. It takes practice to
learn how to avoid this, while not keeping your arms stiff and
throwing off your normal stride.

Some people use one of each. The headlight gives better focus on
what's ahead, while the hand light can bring out extra detail up
close, especially in technical terrain. Having lights from different
angles helps to overcome shadows caused by using only one.

When talking to other people, or with oncoming people, please turn
your lights down and to the side. If you're wearing a headlight, don't
look directly at people; keep the light out of their eyes.

Light technology has changed in recent years. LED bulbs give you a
decent mix of brightness and weight. LEDs have the advantage of very
slow battery drain, and the bulbs virtually never burning out. The
newer "Super Bright", 1-3 watt LED bulbs are much brighter than the
older LEDs. LED lights are softer than xenon or halogen. Some lights
come with colored filters that can improve night vision.

Xenon, Halogen and similar bulbs are the brighter. They do burn
through batteries much quicker and can be glary.

Incandescent bulbs are rarely used anymore.

Several models have multiple bulb systems – with a xenon or halogen
bulb, for brightness, along with one or several LEDs, for longer
battery life. You can switch back and forth as the conditions dictate,
and always have the LEDs as a backup if the batteries start to wane.
These combination lights offer the best of both worlds.

Another option is a bike commuting light. The Cateye EL300, 400 or 500
are great values and great combination of brightness and weight. You
can hold it in your hand, or make a simple hand strap with duct tape.
I can show you what I've done at an upcoming run.

How much brightness you should get depends on what type of running you
do, and the quality of your night vision. Trail running, as opposed to
road running, requires brighter lighting to bring out the varied
terrain. How well you can see largely dictates how hard (hard is
relative to your own ability) you can run on trails.

A couple of us use mountain biking light (e.g., Niterider HID) for
trail running. These lights are extremely bright, but the batter pack
quite heavy (that just makes for a better workout). HID lights are
expensive, $250-$500.

You can find lights at outdoor, running and bike stores, as well as
online. In addition to REI, consider some of the local stores:
Bent Gate in Golden
Wilderness Exchange in Denver, across from REI. A discount outlet.
Also online.
Army/Navy Surplus in Englewood, Aurora and Arvada

You can also get some great deals online including:
SierraTradingPost.com – discount outlet based in Cheyenne
Ebay
Amazon.com

Several people have mentioned good deals at WalMart. However, be
careful about buying a very cheap, knock off.

SNOWSHOES
Run on snowshoes? Are you crazy? Yes, but that's beside the point.
Snowshoe running is an awesome workout (you can easily burn >1,000
calories/hour), very easy to learn, low impact, almost injury free,
perhaps the warmest winter sport, and a lot of fun.

Modern snowshoes are not like the old ones you might imagine. They are
fairly small and lightweight. You don't have to waddle like a duck.
You can run with little or no change in your stride, depending on the
terrain.

Running snowshoes are lighter in weight, have a narrower profile and a
different cleat system than hiking and backcountry shoes. Weight
matters. When it's on your foot, at the end of the pendulum, rather
than around your waist, you feel it a lot more. Think of the
difference in how it feels to run when your shoes are dry, versus
after they are wet and full of mud.

The other main functional difference is in how the shoes track on the
snow. With backcountry shoes, the toe pivots so that the back stays on
the snow, even if you are going up an extremely steep slope. With
running shoes, the toe pivots somewhat, but the tail comes off the
snow. For running, you don't want the shoe dragging and getting caught
on rocks and sticks. Different models work somewhat differently.
However, the similar effect is that snow gets kicked up from behind,
sort of a rooster tail effect.

Racing shoes typically weight 2-2.5 lbs/pair. Racing shoes are a
little more expensive, around $250. While that sounds like a lot, they
should last for years, and many come with long warranties. They are
also fine if you are primarily going to snowshoe on packed or well
established trails. Instead, you can get a light weight hiking or
sport type shoe. They are less expensive, heavier, though still OK for
running. Many races will have free loaners available. Check in advance.

Most companies make what they call women's snowshoes. These are
basically smaller and narrower. You don't have to be a woman to use them.

For clothing, wear slick outer layers. You get wet from below, even
when it's sunny, because of the rooster tail effect. DON'T WEAR FLEECE
on the outside. It acts like Velcro to snow. You will end up covered
in snow, and carrying all that extra weight. For a similar reason, zip
up pockets and cover mesh. Nylon pants and jackets work well. Dress in
layers. If you are running, you will generate a lot of body heat and
sweat.

Keeping your feet warm is important. Many racers wear a neoprene sock
(e.g., Seirus or Sealskinz brand), either alone, or over a think sock
liner. The cheap version of this is a plastic shopping bag and duct
tape. Trail running gaiters (small, that just cover your ankle), keep
snow out of the shoe, and from ice building up on the shoe collar and
rubbing your foot. Don't wear cotton socks. Use wool or synthetic
socks that stay warm and dry. Most people race in running shoes.
Lightweight hiking shoes, or even light Nordic boots work well.
Snowshoeing is one of the few areas where Gore-tex running shoes
really help. If you wear running shoes, some people use a winter
cycling bootie, over the shoe, to help keep their feet warm and dry.

Where to go? Pull out a map. Look for a trail. You can snowshoe many
places you might hike or mtn bike in warmer months. After a decent
snowfall in town, try trails without too many rocks. I've had good
snowshoeing at Deer Creek and Green Mountain. A little further up,
there are some good places off of Squaw Pass Rd, Echo Lake, Jones
Pass/Butler Gulch, and Berthoud Pass (off of US40). For a longer
drive, head up to Rocky Mountain National Park. Also, most of the
nordic centers have designated snowshoe trails that are easy to
follow. There, you'll need to pay a trail fee.

I think it's more fun when you get off trail and play in the powder.
Trekking through powder can be extremely tough. It can take you 45 min
to do a mile, in hip deep powder, at max effort. Powder can be good
with a group of diverse abilities. The stronger runners/hikers can
take turns breaking the trail, while the others follow behind.

Poles are optional. They provide better stability and an upper body
workout. However, you then miss working your core and hip stabilizing
muscles. They can get in the way when you are running. They are not
allowed at most races, for safety reasons.

Snowshoe races range in distance from 2mi to 20mi. Don't expect your
times to reflect what you do on roads. Distances are typically not
measured precisely. Snow conditions, hills, packed trail vs.
off-trail, etc., will all affect how much time the course will take.
I've seen a 5k winning time under 20 minutes, and a 10k winning time
over 1:40. Most races will have lots of first time snowshoe racers and
non-runners, and people who will walk the whole way. Please don't be
intimidated. Give it a try. There are approximately 15-20 snowshoe
races in Colorado through the season.

There are a couple of free demo days, Winter Trails. Also, we may have
a couple of group outings. Pay attention to the calendar in future DTR
messages.

THURSDAY RUN
Rick and Christine had to cancel the party. We may have a run,
depending on the weather.

Location: Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP).

Time: The early group meets at 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm.

Run notes: BCLP gives us the option of running either the paved
road/bike path, or dirt trails, depending on conditions and the
group's wishes. The trails are usually very run-able in snow and ice.

Weather notes: I am aware of the forecast. However, there is still
some variability in the various forecast models as to when the heavy
snow will start. The run will be cancelled if the snow and wind start
by sunset, and, especially, if there's any indication that the roads
will become bad by the evening. Consider what the roads might be like
at 7:30pm, after the run, not just how they look in the afternoon.
It's not worth risking an accident just to run. If you're uncertain,
call my cell phone late Thursday afternoon, 303-870-0487.

Alternate directions: If coming from the N, to avoid congestion on
C470, stay on I70 (or hwy 6 to I70) W to the Red Rocks exit, #259. Go
S from the exit (L from Denver, R from Evergreen), down the hill, past
Red Rocks, ~2mi, to Morrison. Turn left at the T-intersection/light in
Morrison. In ~1/3mi, just before C-470, turn left onto Rooney Rd, then
an immediate right into the dirt lot.

WEEKEND SNOWSHOE
Depending on when the snow stops, and how bad the roads get, we'll try
to get together for a group snowshoe outing this weekend, either
Saturday or Sunday. If the snowfall is big, we will go somewhere
close, possibly Green Mtn, Falcon, or Deer Creek. Check for a later
posting, or call me on Saturday.

OTHER GROUPS

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
12/30: Upper Bear Creek Rd., 5 mi mark
1/6: Golden Watershed
1/13: Chief Hosa

SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow for
varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.

The BoulderTrailRunners has several free weekly group runs.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BoulderTrailRunners

The Incline Club meets every Sunday for runs in the Pikes Peak area.
They stay on lower trails through the winter, then move higher up the
mountain as the snow clears. Let us know if you are interested in
car-pooling from the Denver area. http://www.inclineclub.com

Interested in another weekday or weekend group run? Pick a time and
place, and we'll post it to the group.

FEATURED RACES
*2/25; Run the Register Stair Climb
Denver Trail Runners is putting together teams for the race. The race
is up 47 floors, 1,014 steps, in the "Cash Register" building (Wells
Fargo Center), downtown Denver.

Justin has set up a Denver Trail Runners team. If there is enough
interest, we can set up a separate women's team, and additional DTR
teams. Please let me know if you are interested in setting up
additional teams. Otherwise, join the DenverTrailRunners team when you
sign up.

Running up 47 floors is a bit longer than running a mile, and a lot
harder. Last year's winning time was 6:10 men, 6:41 women. If you can
run 1 mile faster than about 6:50, you should sign up in the "elite"
category. That allows you to start early, so you won't have to fight
your way around lots of slower walkers.

More to come later.

There's no run/snowshoe today (Thursday). It's not worth risking driving.

Instead, we will snowshoe Friday. Meet at South Table Mtn, NREL lot,
at 6pm. It's just off I70, and the street to NREL is well maintained.

There will be extra snowshoes available. There should be enough for everyone who
needs them, but you can reserve them in advance by responding to this message.

THURSDAY RUN & SOLSTICE PARTY
Location: Rick, Christine, Christoph and Bobby's house, in Willow
Springs, just S of Morrison. See directions below.

Check back on Thursday for a possible change, due to weather and road
conditions. There will still be a run, but we may postpone the party.

Time: Start arriving at 6:00pm, to drop off food, change, etc. The run
will start between 6:20 – 6:30 pm.

Run notes: There will be an intermediate and long trail run. The route
will be marked with survey tape and glow sticks. There will also be a
road option. The trails may be icy. See the separate DTR Winter
message, posted later, for devices and tips for running on ice.

In case of heavy snow (Rick says that they usually get about twice as
much as Denver), this might end up being a snowshoe hike. 3"-6" can
make great running conditions, even better than a dry trail, just with
regular shoes. Bring your snowshoes if you want. There will be several
extra pair available to borrow.

Party: The hosts will be providing chili, both meat and veg. DTR will
provide plastic utensils, plates/bowls, napkins (paper), etc. Please
bring: beer/wine/soda/juice, salads, breads, side dishes, desserts.

You are welcome to come to the party whether or not you run that
night, and whether or not you can bring some food/drink. We always
have plenty to share.

Directions:
Take C470 to the Quincy exit.
From the N, go L at the end of the off ramp and head S.
From the S, go L at the end of the off ramp, over the hwy, and continue S.
The road ends at Belleview. Turn R.
Go ~1.5mi up the hill.
Just past the lake on the left, turn L on Willow Springs Drive.
Go over several speed bumps, then stay L at the fork on Willow Springs
Drive.
At the next fork/stop sign, the house is directly in front of you.
Turn L and park by the first driveway on the R.

Alternate directions from the N, to avoid heavy C470 traffic:
Continue W on I70, past C470, to the Red Rocks exit, #259, as if going
to the Hogback route.
Go S (L from Denver, R from Evergreen), ~2mi, to the end of the road,
in Morrison.
Turn R in Morrison, on hwy 74 for ~¼mi.
Turn L on hwy 8.
Go up the hill, past the turn to Mt. Falcon, ~1.5mi, to The Fort
restaurant.
Just past The Fort, just before hwy 285, turn L onto Willow Springs.
Follow the road down a steep hill, under the hwy, and steeply up the
other side.
After the road crests, and starts heading gently downhill, by the
country club, turn right on Willow Springs Drive.
Follow the above directions to the house.

If you can
run 1 mile in about 7 minutes, you should sign up in the "elite"
category. That allows you to start early, so you won't have to fight
your way around lots of slower walkers.

More to come later.

Subject: DTR: Important Message for Lakewood Residents
denvertrailr...
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

Happy Holidays!  This is Joe Paniccia writing.  I'm a DenverTrailRunners regular and a moderator of the DTR yahoo group.  I'd like to tell you about an item of interest to trail runners, mountain bikers, hikers, equestrians, dog walkers, and other lovers of open space trails in the metro Denver foothills.

This month Lakewood residents will vote (via mail-in ballot) in a special election that will determine the future of a key open space trail corridor between Green Mountain Park and Bear Creek Lake Park.  I'm strongly in favor of the measure, known as Ref #1, which authorizes a land swap to preserve the corridor of existing singletrack and doubletrack trails linking the parks.

Since the DTR yahoo group is not open to un-moderated posts, fairness dictates that we present both sides of the issue.  Below you'll see the text of a message sent to DTR moderators by a DTR member opposing the measure, followed by my comments in favor of the measure.  If you're a Lakewood resident, please read on, and please vote by sending in your ballot.  It must arrive at the City Clerk's office by January 2nd.

First, some very brief background:

A portion of the Rooney Valley is about to be developed.  That's the large open area between Green Mountain and Bear Creek Lake Park.  A significant portion of the Rooney Valley is owned by a developer who now has the necessary approvals to build, after many years of debate.  This month's election has no bearing on that decision.  The development is already underway.  Instead, the election will determine whether that development will preserve or eliminate the open space corridor that links the parks.  A vote FOR the measure will approve the land swap, and thus preserve the open space trail corridor.  A vote AGAINST the measure will deny the swap, and thus eliminate the corridor and its trails.

Comments AGAINST the measure, from DTR member Jacqueline Hagan:

A parcel of land, which was donated 30 years ago, just south of green mountain, known as forsberg park; which has been an open green space for all lovers of our green space, is up for election, due to a developer being heavily involved with the housing development/owners directly east of them; they are seeking to "swap" the land at forsberg, for a "buffer" between them and the new development; hence, taking away green space, that was dully donated as such to keep as such.  This does indeed affect all of the trail runners in this city for it will take an existing parkland, for development purposes, and they are not stopping there.  In case you are not aware of this fact, this developer, is placing a water tank on the south side of green mountain!!!  This is just beginning; for if this city is allowed to take the land away as open green space, green mountain is next; and all lakewood city open green space is open for swaps/and removal of green open space for development/revenue purposes.  This will set a precedent that will not fair well for future open green space property; hence, affecting all trail runners, hikers, bicyclists, etc...  Please let me know your thoughts on how to relay this information to the trailrunners within this group...they can easily access the web site lakewoodvoter.org  to find out more information.  thank you for your time!!
-- Jacqueline Hagan

Comments FOR the measure, from DTR member Joe Paniccia:

The proposed land swap will be a huge win for trail runners, mountain bikers, and all lovers of open space.  Here's why:

-- In the city's swap with the developer, the City of Lakewood will give up only 22 of the 168 acres of Forsberg/Iron Springs Park, which is on the south side of Alameda Parkway.  In return, Lakewood gets 22 acres to serve as a trail corridor adjacent to those very same parks.  Those acres already contain heavily-used singletrack and doubletrack trails that link 5 key parks - Green Mountain, Forsberg, Iron Springs, Coyote Gulch, and Bear Creek Lake Park.  Without this land swap, there will be an unbroken sea of homes, with no corridor, and no trail linking the parks.
-- A vote FOR the measure will give open space lovers the best possible solution.  Not only will we keep the vast majority of Forsberg/Iron Springs as open space, but we also gain the open space corridor to link all the parks by trail.  A vote against the measure will leave us with only Forsberg/Iron Springs Park, which will become completely boxed in by homes and Alameda Pkwy, and have no linkage with the parks to the south.  A vote FOR the measure will preserve the vast majority of Forsberg/Iron Springs, AND link all of the parks.
-- Opponents of the measure refer to the corridor as a ditch.  This is simply not true.  While a natural ravine exists there, it encompasses only 3 of the 22 acres.  Instead of detracting from the land, that feature actually enhances it by providing a rugged variation of terrain adjacent to a brief segment of the main trail thru the corridor.  I live near and use the corridor heavily, and I've also used the parcel being swapped out.  As I weigh the areas being swapped, it's clear to me the swap favors the residents of Lakewood, especially trail users.  I do believe the developer gains also, but this simply makes it a win-win.
-- For more information, please visit www.voteforopenspace.org.  Voter turnout is typically very low in special elections, so it's likely this issue will be decided by a small number of voters.  When you receive your ballot in the mail, please take a few minutes and vote FOR Ref #1, which will preserve the open space corridor linking 5 of Lakewood's parks for all trail users.

Thanks.  --  Joe Paniccia

Description:   Join us for out monthly Full Moon run tonight, Monday, Dec 4, 6:15pm. This will be a social run. That means that we will stay mostly together, and wait for people at key intersections; it will be a slow pace for faster runners, not a hard workout.

Chief Hosa is a good winter run location. The run is mostly on a well maintained dirt road with a moderate grade. You won't need trail shoes and shouldn't need ice devices. About 2 mi up, we should have a great view of the moon rising over the city.

SNOWSHOE
Everyone is invited to go snowshoeing with us on Saturday. Meet at the
Cold Spring park-and-ride lot at 10am.

The lot is at 5th & Union in Lakewood. Take 6th ave to the Simms/Union
exit. Go S 1 block. Turn left at the light. Turn left into the lot.
We'll meet towards the NE corner of the lot. Look for my white Prius,
lic plate RUNUPHL, with a bike rack on top.

From there, we'll arrange car pools and figure out a place to go. My
initial thoughts are to go towards Squaw Pass, along the road between
Evergreen and Echo Lake (base of Mt. Evans). We'll go as high as
necessary to find good snow, but as close to town as possible. It'll
be about a 45-50 min drive ea way, depending on road conditions. We'll
snowshoe for 1-2 hours, depending on the groups' wishes. We should be
back to Lakewood by 2pm.

We will go at a slow enough pace to keep everyone together. For those
who want to run and get in a vigorous workout, you can run ahead and
back so that we don't get too far apart. We'll do most of the uphills
on packed trails (depending on location), and go off trail on some of
the downhills. Weeee! It's fun running downhill in powder.

I have a few extra pair of snowshoes to lend (in addition to the one
for John). If you want to borrow a pair, please reserve them in
advance, by e-mail. Once they're gone, you'll have to bring your own.
You can rent snowshoes at most ski rental stores, outdoor/back-country
stores (REI, Bent Gate or Alpenglow in Golden), and some running
stores (Runners Roost in Lakewood and Denver, Boulder Running Company
in Littleton). Please rent a recreational or running shoe, not a
back-country shoe. The biggest size anyone should need is 8"x25".
Don't worry too much about the size ratings for Saturday.

Wear the same type of gear you'd use for winter biking or cross
country skiing. Wear wool or synthetic fabrics; avoid cotton. Wear
layers. Snowshoeing is the warmest winter sport. You'll probably want
to shed layers as we go. Wear slick outer layers, like nylon wind
pants/jackets. Fleece acts like velcro for snow. The biggest issue is
keeping your feet warm. Wear neoprene or gore-tex socks, if you have
them. Otherwise, wear warm wool socks. Some people wear plastic
supermarket bags over their socks. Lightweight hiking shoes, x-c ski
boots, or gore-tex trail running shoes work great. I'll probably be
wearing running shoes with neoprene socks. Small gaitors are a good
idea too.

If you are running late, or are coming from up the hill and want to
meet us in Bergen Park, please call on Sat morning. 303-870-0487

THANKSGIVING RUN
Are you interested in a Thanksgiving morning trail run? It's an
opportunity to run a trail, midweek, in daylight. It's also a great
way to make room for that extra slice of turkey and pie.

We need someone willing to lead the run. All leading means is picking
a place and time, then greeting people and getting them going at the
start. You don't need to be the fastest. Any trail will do. Perhaps
something new or don't run often: Sharptail Ridge? Centennial Cone?

This Monday, we will join the Hash House Harriers for a full moon run.
The run starts at the Wheat Ridge Rec Center, @ 41st & Kipling.
According the the Hashers web site, "There will be mixes of road and
trail, so bring the flashlights." "Bring $5."

Hashers have been described as drinkers with a running problem. At the
runs, someone (or several) will go out early and set a course. They
mark turns and intersections, usually with flour, but not the turn
direction. The trailing runners work as a group, sending out people in
different directions to find the next mark. They then call back to the
group, with everyone following in the correct direction, hopefully.
It's not that hard. There will be experienced hashers to run with.
Drinking is optional.

For info and directions, go to the site below, and scroll down to the
Denver Full Moon Hash.

NY Marathon Contest
Lance Armstrong is running the NY Marathon on Sunday. How fast will he
run? Send in your guess by midnight on Saturday. The race is Sunday.

The person with the closest time wins a free, 1-year membership to the
DenverTrailRunners (I know it's free, so is the contest; what do you
want). If you guess his time to the second, you can win a free 2-year
membership.

Please send your guess to runuphillracing@...

P.S. My guess is 2:47:15

You can follow the race at http://www.nycmarathon.org/home/index.php
They have a "Lance Cam."

A 1-hour highlight show of the race is scheduled to air on NBC/KUSA,
channel 9, 11:30am - 12:30pm, Sunday.

Thursday's run location is tentatively changed, because of the
forecasted winter storm. The run will be at Red Rocks, instead of
South Valley. Meet at the Trading Post, at 6:15pm

This change will happen if we have significant snow or rain overnight,
or Thursday, that will make the trails muddy. If the storm doesn't develop and
the trails are dry, we will run at the original location, South Valley.

Denver Trail Runners generally does not run on muddy trails. Running, biking,
hiking, etc., creates ruts and speeds erosion. There are enough dry days that we
can wait for another day, and help preserve the trails.

Jefferson County (JEFFCO) Open Space (OS) is holding an open house on
South Table Mountain (STM), Tuesday, Oct 24. This is your chance to
learn about the history and plans for STM, and give your opinion about
how you would like to see the park developed.

The open house runs from 6:00-8:30pm. OS staff will give a short
presentation at 6:30pm. They will be there throughout the evening to
explain the existing ownership boundaries and trails, answer
questions, and to have your comments recorded for consideration.

STM is one of our regular run locations. How the park is developed
will affect how we and others can use the park in the future. I
encourage you to attend the open house, and/or send in your comments
about the future of STM. They need to hear the voice of trail runners.

JEFFCO OS has owned part of STM since 1977. In 2004, they purchased
additional land. This now enables them to develop a park and trail
system. However, some of STM still remains in private hands. You'll be
surprised to see where the private land is, including the Castle
Rock/Golden Stairs.

The open house will be at the OS offices, 700 Jefferson County
Parkway, Golden. This is behind the Taj Mahal. Take hwy 6 to the light
just W of C470, or about 1mi S of Lookout Mtn Rd. This is Heritage Rd
& hwy 93 to the SW, and Jefferson County Parkway to the NE. Turn on
Jefferson County Parkway (right from Denver, left from

It's time to clear out those old running shoes and race shirts taking
up space in your closet. Every year, I collect clothing from various
running groups, and take it to homeless shelters. I will collect your
old shoes and shirts, at the Thursday night runs, over the next
several weeks.

You can do this yourself too, and get a tax donation. Several running
stores recycle old shoes. I know Runners Roost does,
http://www.runnersroost.com/reuseashoeprogram2.html . There are
several places in Boulder,
http://www.boulderrunning.com/oneworldrunning/shoedrop.php . You can
also check other running stores. I usually take the clothing to the
Denver Rescue Mission, http://www.denverrescuemission.org , 303-313-2413

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Red Rocks

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start

Sunset 6:26pm. End civil twilight 6:53pm.

Run notes: If it's dry, we will run the trails into Matthews Winters.
If it's muddy, we'll stick to the roads in the park. If you don't have

+ Running shoes needed for homeless runner
+ Training partner wanted this weekend
+ Volunteers needed for Backroads

A former runner, who's been living in homeless shelters, is looking to
get back into running. He's a former 2:51 marathoner, and wants to
train to post a Boston qualifying time. He's looking for a pair of
size 12 shoes, new, or used but in decent shape, he can use until he
can afford to buy them himself. Please contact me and I'll pass it on.

++++++++++
From Maggie Close:
"I'm looking for a training partner to do a trail run with this
weekend, anywhere from 20-25 miles on trails near Denver, or in the
mountains...any suggestions? I did a 50K last year in 6:30 (this was
in Milwaukee, where I was living at the time). I am about a 11-12
minute per mile runner on the trails. On the road I'm between a
9:30-11:00 comfortably, depending on if I'm chatting with a fellow
runner or not."

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Lookout Mtn/Chimney Gulch, Beaver Brook option.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm.

Run notes: This is a variation of the route on the web site. ¼ mi
after the road crossing at Windy Saddle, stay straight on the hiker
only Beaver Brook trail. Don't take the left to Boettcher Mansion.

This is an out-and-back run. Turn by time, wherever you are at 40
minutes, not at a specific location. In case of rain, run the Lookout
Mtn road instead of the trail.

Upcoming schedule (subject to change):
9/21 – South Table Mtn.

ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,

A pair of large, lightweight, windproof gloves
A black, Marmot

They were turned over to Jeff O'Reilly. If you lost them, check with
him at the run. Otherwise, they will be turned over to Jeffco or a

THURSDAY RUN
Location: North Table Mtn.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm.

Run notes: There are not any short routes. The route is a big loop,
with a short out-and-back at the start/finish. I suggest that slower
runners go part way around the loop, turn around after about 35-40
minutes, and return the same way.

Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. It cools off quickly when
the sun goes down, especially down in the river valley, where we will be.

The run and picnic will go on as planned today. As of now, 3:30pm,
it's partly sunny and dry on the west side of town. The trails at Lair
drain well if they do get any rain. Last time we ran at Lair, the
weather was similar to today, and it was dry, and the trails in good
condition.

It cools off quickly when the sun goes down, so bring some warm and
dry clothes to change into for after the run.

Driving tip: If coming from 6th ave or I-70 (from Denver), to avoid
the usualy back-up on C470, continue W, up I70, to the Red Rocks exit,
#259. Turn left, from the off ramp, and head ~2.5mi down the hill,
past Red Rocks, to Morrison. Turn right in Morrison, and continue
4.5mi up hwy 74.

If the weather does take a dramatic turn for the worse in the next
couple of hours, we will move the run to Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet at
the dirt lot, at Morrison and Rooney roads, just west of C-470. We'll
decide whether to picnic or go to dinner at that time. If you are
unsure, you can call me between 5:15-5:30, 303-870-0487.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Lair o' the Bear. Potluck picnic after the run.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm. Regardless of when you start, please finish around 7:20 so
that we'll still have some daylight for the potluck. If you start
late, please cut your run short to finish on time. The run is out and
back, so there's no reason not to finish on time, regardless of how
late you start or slow you run.
Sunset 7:33pm; end civil twilight 8:01.

Potluck: Everyone is invited, regardless of whether you can make the
run, or whether you bring food. Certainly we'd like you to bring
something to share, but there's always extra, so please don't be
afraid to join the picnic if you forget to bring something.

What to bring: fruit, salads (e.g., green, pasta), creative outdoors
entrees (store bought food is fine), drinks, desserts, whatever.
Plates, napkins, utensils, etc., will be provided.

Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. It cools off quickly when
the sun goes down, especially down in the river valley, where we will be.

Upcoming schedule (subject to change):
9/7 – North Table Mtn.
9/14 – Lookout, Beaver Brook

SPEED WORKOUT
Wednesday, 8/30, 6:15pm. Meet at the Florida (dirt) lot of Green
Mountain. This is a different lot than we normally meet it. It's off
of Alameda, ~¼mi N of Jewell.

From 6th ave, take the Simms/Union exit. Go S on Simms to Alameda.
Turn right on Alameda, and continue ~1½mi to the lot, on the right.

From the SW, follow the directions to the Rooney Rd lot. Except, at
Alameda, turn right. At the light at Jewell, the next street, turn
left, and go ~¼mi to the lot.

From I70, take the Colfax exit and go right, W. Continue on US40,
across hwy 6, to Rooney Rd, just under C470. Go left, and continue
past the Rooney Rd lot, to the stop sign. Turn left on Alameda, then
follow the directions above.

MORNING RED ROCKS STAIRS
Start your mornings off right running the stairs at Red Rocks (RR). A
few DTR regulars meet there on most Tuesday mornings. They usually
start around 5:30am – 5:45am. However, you'll find people there almost
every morning.

You can either start at the stairs, or park in Morrison then run up,
as a warm-up. The DTR site has directions to RR. For Morrison, take
C470 to the Morrison, hwy 74 exit. Go W, through town, past the first
light and gas station, to the last diner on the left, T and Ts, and
park in their lot. /From there, cross and run up the road, for ~200
yards. Take a right at the first entrance into RR, and follow the
signs up. It's about a 1.25 mi run to the stairs.

This is a "show-n-go" event, meaning just start whenever you show up.
There won't be a group meeting at the start. We realize that people
have differently tight schedules in the morning. There are usually
others, not with DTR, running the stairs. Once at the stairs, you can
ask people if they're with DTR.

A stair workout may start on the bleachers, from the stage level. See
how far you can get with just one stride per bleacher level. This is
very hard. It is very unlikely you will make it to the top, or even
close, on just one step. I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, switch to two steps per level to the top.

After a few times up the bleachers (or you can skip the bleachers and
start here), switch to the stairs on the N side. You can start at the
stage level, half way up, or down at street level. On these smaller
stairs, I usually do just one stair per stride, even though I am able
to take 2-3 stairs at a time. If you skip the bleachers, you can start
with 2-3 stairs/step, then switch to one when you tire. The bleachers
and multiple steps emphasize leg/hip strength. A one step approach
better emphasizes leg speed and calf strength.

CO Relay
From Adam Lee: "I just found out from our team leader that we are in
need of one more runner on our team. Most of our runners average a
45-50 minute 10K pace, but that is not a requirement. Our team leader
informed me that the current opening measures up to about 12 miles of
running over the course of 3 legs. We are competing as a nonconformist
team, so we could probably rearrange which legs you want to run if
need be."
adaml@...

"I'm looking for a few more strong runners to fill out our team. Sub
42min 10k time would be a good fit. Open to men and women--we're
running in the non-conformist category. I/we've done the race several
times in the past and finished top 5 overall two years ago (good ole
boys, '04)."

I'm sure other teams are also looking for runners. To find out, and
