SNOWSHOE
Everyone is invited to go snowshoeing with us on Saturday. Meet at the
Cold Spring park-and-ride lot at 10am.
The lot is at 5th & Union in Lakewood. Take 6th ave to the Simms/Union
exit. Go S 1 block. Turn left at the light. Turn left into the lot.
We'll meet towards the NE corner of the lot. Look for my white Prius,
lic plate RUNUPHL, with a bike rack on top.
From there, we'll arrange car pools and figure out a place to go. My
initial thoughts are to go towards Squaw Pass, along the road between
Evergreen and Echo Lake (base of Mt. Evans). We'll go as high as
necessary to find good snow, but as close to town as possible. It'll
be about a 45-50 min drive ea way, depending on road conditions. We'll
snowshoe for 1-2 hours, depending on the groups' wishes. We should be
back to Lakewood by 2pm.
We will go at a slow enough pace to keep everyone together. For those
who want to run and get in a vigorous workout, you can run ahead and
back so that we don't get too far apart. We'll do most of the uphills
on packed trails (depending on location), and go off trail on some of
the downhills. Weeee! It's fun running downhill in powder.
I have a few extra pair of snowshoes to lend (in addition to the one
for John). If you want to borrow a pair, please reserve them in
advance, by e-mail. Once they're gone, you'll have to bring your own.
You can rent snowshoes at most ski rental stores, outdoor/back-country
stores (REI, Bent Gate or Alpenglow in Golden), and some running
stores (Runners Roost in Lakewood and Denver, Boulder Running Company
in Littleton). Please rent a recreational or running shoe, not a
back-country shoe. The biggest size anyone should need is 8"x25".
Don't worry too much about the size ratings for Saturday.
Wear the same type of gear you'd use for winter biking or cross
country skiing. Wear wool or synthetic fabrics; avoid cotton. Wear
layers. Snowshoeing is the warmest winter sport. You'll probably want
to shed layers as we go. Wear slick outer layers, like nylon wind
pants/jackets. Fleece acts like velcro for snow. The biggest issue is
keeping your feet warm. Wear neoprene or gore-tex socks, if you have
them. Otherwise, wear warm wool socks. Some people wear plastic
supermarket bags over their socks. Lightweight hiking shoes, x-c ski
boots, or gore-tex trail running shoes work great. I'll probably be
wearing running shoes with neoprene socks. Small gaitors are a good
idea too.
If you are running late, or are coming from up the hill and want to
meet us in Bergen Park, please call on Sat morning. 303-870-0487

THANKSGIVING RUN
Are you interested in a Thanksgiving morning trail run? It's an
opportunity to run a trail, midweek, in daylight. It's also a great
way to make room for that extra slice of turkey and pie.
We need someone willing to lead the run. All leading means is picking
a place and time, then greeting people and getting them going at the
start. You don't need to be the fastest. Any trail will do. Perhaps
something new or don't run often: Sharptail Ridge? Centennial Cone?

This Monday, we will join the Hash House Harriers for a full moon run.
The run starts at the Wheat Ridge Rec Center, @ 41st & Kipling.
According the the Hashers web site, "There will be mixes of road and
trail, so bring the flashlights." "Bring $5."
Hashers have been described as drinkers with a running problem. At the
runs, someone (or several) will go out early and set a course. They
mark turns and intersections, usually with flour, but not the turn
direction. The trailing runners work as a group, sending out people in
different directions to find the next mark. They then call back to the
group, with everyone following in the correct direction, hopefully.
It's not that hard. There will be experienced hashers to run with.
Drinking is optional.
For info and directions, go to the site below, and scroll down to the
Denver Full Moon Hash.

Thursday's run location is tentatively changed, because of the
forecasted winter storm. The run will be at Red Rocks, instead of
South Valley. Meet at the Trading Post, at 6:15pm
This change will happen if we have significant snow or rain overnight,
or Thursday, that will make the trails muddy. If the storm doesn't develop and
the trails are dry, we will run at the original location, South Valley.
Denver Trail Runners generally does not run on muddy trails. Running, biking,
hiking, etc., creates ruts and speeds erosion. There are enough dry days that we
can wait for another day, and help preserve the trails.

Jefferson County (JEFFCO) Open Space (OS) is holding an open house on
South Table Mountain (STM), Tuesday, Oct 24. This is your chance to
learn about the history and plans for STM, and give your opinion about
how you would like to see the park developed.
The open house runs from 6:00-8:30pm. OS staff will give a short
presentation at 6:30pm. They will be there throughout the evening to
explain the existing ownership boundaries and trails, answer
questions, and to have your comments recorded for consideration.
STM is one of our regular run locations. How the park is developed
will affect how we and others can use the park in the future. I
encourage you to attend the open house, and/or send in your comments
about the future of STM. They need to hear the voice of trail runners.
JEFFCO OS has owned part of STM since 1977. In 2004, they purchased
additional land. This now enables them to develop a park and trail
system. However, some of STM still remains in private hands. You'll be
surprised to see where the private land is, including the Castle
Rock/Golden Stairs.
The open house will be at the OS offices, 700 Jefferson County
Parkway, Golden. This is behind the Taj Mahal. Take hwy 6 to the light
just W of C470, or about 1mi S of Lookout Mtn Rd. This is Heritage Rd
& hwy 93 to the SW, and Jefferson County Parkway to the NE. Turn on

+ Running shoes needed for homeless runner

+ Volunteers needed for Backroads
A former runner, who's been living in homeless shelters, is looking to
get back into running. He's a former 2:51 marathoner, and wants to
train to post a Boston qualifying time. He's looking for a pair of
size 12 shoes, new, or used but in decent shape, he can use until he
can afford to buy them himself. Please contact me and I'll pass it on.
++++++++++
From Maggie Close:
"I'm looking for a training partner to do a trail run with this
weekend, anywhere from 20-25 miles on trails near Denver, or in the
mountains...any suggestions? I did a 50K last year in 6:30 (this was
in Milwaukee, where I was living at the time). I am about a 11-12
minute per mile runner on the trails. On the road I'm between a
9:30-11:00 comfortably, depending on if I'm chatting with a fellow
runner or not."

THURSDAY RUN
Location: North Table Mtn.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm.
Run notes: There are not any short routes. The route is a big loop,
with a short out-and-back at the start/finish. I suggest that slower
runners go part way around the loop, turn around after about 35-40
minutes, and return the same way.
Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. It cools off quickly when
the sun goes down, especially down in the river valley, where we will be.
Upcoming schedule (subject to change):
9/14 – Lookout Mtn, Beaver Brook

The run and picnic will go on as planned today. As of now, 3:30pm,
it's partly sunny and dry on the west side of town. The trails at Lair
drain well if they do get any rain. Last time we ran at Lair, the
weather was similar to today, and it was dry, and the trails in good
condition.
It cools off quickly when the sun goes down, so bring some warm and
dry clothes to change into for after the run.
Driving tip: If coming from 6th ave or I-70 (from Denver), to avoid
the usualy back-up on C470, continue W, up I70, to the Red Rocks exit,
#259. Turn left, from the off ramp, and head ~2.5mi down the hill,
past Red Rocks, to Morrison. Turn right in Morrison, and continue
4.5mi up hwy 74.
If the weather does take a dramatic turn for the worse in the next
couple of hours, we will move the run to Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet at
the dirt lot, at Morrison and Rooney roads, just west of C-470. We'll
decide whether to picnic or go to dinner at that time. If you are
unsure, you can call me between 5:15-5:30, 303-870-0487.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Lair o' the Bear. Potluck picnic after the run.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm. Regardless of when you start, please finish around 7:20 so
that we'll still have some daylight for the potluck. If you start
late, please cut your run short to finish on time. The run is out and
back, so there's no reason not to finish on time, regardless of how
late you start or slow you run.
Sunset 7:33pm; end civil twilight 8:01.
Potluck: Everyone is invited, regardless of whether you can make the
run, or whether you bring food. Certainly we'd like you to bring
something to share, but there's always extra, so please don't be
afraid to join the picnic if you forget to bring something.
What to bring: fruit, salads (e.g., green, pasta), creative outdoors
entrees (store bought food is fine), drinks, desserts, whatever.
Plates, napkins, utensils, etc., will be provided.
Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. It cools off quickly when

MORNING RED ROCKS STAIRS
Start your mornings off right running the stairs at Red Rocks (RR). A
few DTR regulars meet there on most Tuesday mornings. They usually
start around 5:30am – 5:45am. However, you'll find people there almost
every morning.
You can either start at the stairs, or park in Morrison then run up,
as a warm-up. The DTR site has directions to RR. For Morrison, take
C470 to the Morrison, hwy 74 exit. Go W, through town, past the first
light and gas station, to the last diner on the left, T and Ts, and
park in their lot. /From there, cross and run up the road, for ~200
yards. Take a right at the first entrance into RR, and follow the
signs up. It's about a 1.25 mi run to the stairs.
This is a "show-n-go" event, meaning just start whenever you show up.
There won't be a group meeting at the start. We realize that people
have differently tight schedules in the morning. There are usually
others, not with DTR, running the stairs. Once at the stairs, you can
ask people if they're with DTR.
A stair workout may start on the bleachers, from the stage level. See
how far you can get with just one stride per bleacher level. This is
very hard. It is very unlikely you will make it to the top, or even
close, on just one step. I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, switch to two steps per level to the top.
After a few times up the bleachers (or you can skip the bleachers and
start here), switch to the stairs on the N side. You can start at the
stage level, half way up, or down at street level. On these smaller
stairs, I usually do just one stair per stride, even though I am able
to take 2-3 stairs at a time. If you skip the bleachers, you can start
with 2-3 stairs/step, then switch to one when you tire. The bleachers
and multiple steps emphasize leg/hip strength. A one step approach
better emphasizes leg speed and calf strength.

CO Relay
From Adam Lee: "I just found out from our team leader that we are in
need of one more runner on our team. Most of our runners average a
45-50 minute 10K pace, but that is not a requirement. Our team leader
informed me that the current opening measures up to about 12 miles of
running over the course of 3 legs. We are competing as a nonconformist
team, so we could probably rearrange which legs you want to run if
need be."
adaml@...
"I'm looking for a few more strong runners to fill out our team. Sub
42min 10k time would be a good fit. Open to men and women--we're
running in the non-conformist category. I/we've done the race several
times in the past and finished top 5 overall two years ago (good ole
boys, '04)."

SPEED WORKOUT
Twilight Trail Series race this Tuesday. See calendar below.

OTHER GROUPS
SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
August 19: Elk Meadow. Lower lot.
August 27: O'Fallon Park.
September 2: Genesee Overlook.
September 9: Bergen Peak Race (9am). Elk Meadow, upper parking lot.
SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow for
varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.

LEADVILLE PACERS
If you've ever wanted to learn about ultras, or just want to
experience a moving event, come up to Leadville this weekend. There
are still runners looking for pacers. You can find runners to pace on
race day. Just show up at one of the aid stations ready to go; Twin
Lakes and Fish Hatchery are the best spots to find someone to pace.
Announce yourself at the aid station, letting aid station workers and
racer crews know you are ready to pace. Ask unaccompanied runners when
they come in. Some runners will come into aid stations and ask if
there are any pacers. Others may not know that pacers are available
until you let them know. For more information about pacing, go to

GRAND CANYON
"Hi all, I have always wanted to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim (one
way) in 1 or 2 days. If any one else would like to team up to do this
I have some time off in Early Oct. or would be happy to discuss
possible future plans for a different schedule. Looking forward to
any replies. Thanks, Ralph ralph548@... "

COLO RELAY
"Hoping to find a one or two people to be volunteer representatives
for our all girls team (LaSportivaGoLite). The race is put on by
Colorado Outward Bound (their fundraiser). Your time would be greatly
appreciated. You get a water bottle and some other goodies, plus if
you really get into to it, there is prize for the best exchange point.
At this point in time you can request where you want to be, your time
is usually 2 to 4 hours, and anywhere between Idaho and Glenwood
Springs, (you could vol and do a trail run, it is so beautiful up
there that time of year). PLEASE CALL or email me if slightly
interested! THANKS SO MUCH.

SPEED WORKOUT
Tuesday. 6:15pm. Boettcher Mansion. It looks like Yahoo truncated the
message with the details.
Directions: Take I70 to the Lookout Mountain/Buffalo Bill exit, #256,
then follow large brown signs.
Take a right (from Denver) from the off ramp.
Take a left on US40, the frontage road.
Go ¾ mi to Lookout Mtn Rd, the 2nd street.
Turn right and go ~1.4mi
Turn left at Colorow and go ~1.2mi to the mansion.
Meet in front of the nature center.
The workout will be clockwise on the Meadow Loop trail. Start at the
bottom of the hill, ~30 yards down from the lower junction with the
Forest Loop trail. Run hard, along Meadow Loop, to the upper junction
with Forest Loop. Jog down the short connector trail to the start.
We'll do 3-5 repeats; about 4-5 min hard, with about a 1:30 jog in
between. The footing is good, and it is mostly flat. You can leave
water bottles, etc., at the lower junction, to use during the workout.
The trails are at ~7,500', so it should be cooler than town.

- 7:15 pm
This event does not repeat.
Event Location: Boettcher Mansion Notes:
This week's speed workout will be at Boettcher Mansion, a repeat of the workout we did in June. This puts us up at ~7,500', for cooler temps. We'll meet in front of the nature center at 6:15pm.
The workout will be a VO2Max type workout; 4 sets of ¾ mi hard, 4-5 min, with a ~1:30 easy jog in between, after a warm up. We will run the Meadow Loop Trail (see links below) clockwise: start at the bottom of the hill, ~30 yards S of the lower junction with the Forest Loop Trail; run hard to the upper junction; jog back down and repeat. The loop has good footing.
I am offering a special version of my Trail101 form clinic, with
special focus on the Pikes Peak and Imogene races. The clinic is Sun,
Aug 13, from 7am to about 11:30. I need a minimum of 5 people to sign
up, by Fri, Aug 11. I realize this is short notice. For details and
registration please visit: http://www.runuphillracing.com

+ Runner needed for Wild West Relay

Clint boston writes: "I had mentioned that I was looking for a runner
for the Wild West Relay. The team is Phat Men Running, we are an Ultra
6X6 male team. Each member averages 33+ miles. We have lost three
members to the Leadville 100; however, we have managed to put together
five very competitive and accomplished runners as part of our
reincarnation (we won the Ultra division and finished 2nd overall last
year). We need a runner that can run a sub 36 10k to stay in the hunt
(would need to kick in for the food and a little for the van; all
entry fees are covered). We are looking to finish well again; however,
it is crunch time and we will entertain anyone who loves running, a
small van, no sleep and has a good sense of humor. Thanks for any help.
Please have them contact me ASAP via email @ cboston@...

SPEED WORKOUT
Green Mtn, Rooney Rd lot. 6:00pm. Tuesday. Justin will lead the
workout. Warm-up for 10-15 minutes, on the trails around the start,
then meet on the E side of the pedestrian bridge over C470. The
planned workout will be a tempo run/time trial, about 5km, from there,
to the Florida (dirt) lot. This is generally flat and rolling terrain.
If you don't want to time trial, then do a series of 4 min hard, 2 min
easy, along the same course. Regroup at the Florida lot. Then, you can
jog easily together either over the top, or back the same way.
The workouts will vary, including short sprints, VO2Max and tempo
intervals, using the trails and hills, instead of a track. We'll use
time and/or landmarks to mark the work and rest, rather than track
laps. The hard efforts generally will be on fairly non-technical
trails, and/or uphills. Locations will vary, using many of the same
trails we run on for Thursdays.
All levels are welcome. We usually stay in a small area – either back
and forth, or a short loop - so, no one will be left behind. If you
want to get faster, you have to practice faster.
Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of the hill or loop.

OTHER GROUPS
SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
8/5: O'Fallon Park.
8/6 (Sunday): Evergreen Town Race (5k and 10k)
8/12: Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon.
SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow for
varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.
WEEKEND TRAINING RUNS AT PIKES PEAK
The Incline Club holds long runs, on Sundays, in the Pike Peak area.
They stay fairly low over the winter, then gradually venture up higher
as the trails dry in the spring. There is a large turnout, often >100
people, even over the winter, with a wide range of abilities. For more
info, go to http://www.inclineclub.com
If you are interested in carpooling to these runs, contact me and I
will share your e-mail address with others who are also interested.
Scott Elliot is leading weekend training runs at Pikes Peak, usually
on Saturdays. He'll be coming from Boulder, and can either pick people
up in the Denver area on the way, or meet people down there. Scott is
a former winner of the Ascent, but please don't be intimidated. Slower
runners will be joining him and are welcome. Scott has great knowledge
of the course and training, and loves to share it with others.

MONDAY "WEEKEND RECOVERY RUNS" at CROWN HILL
Karen Voss is leading "Weekend Recovery Runs", Monday evenings,
6:15pm, at Crown Hill Park, in Wheat Ridge. The runs will be about 3-6
mi. Meet at the trail sign, at the east end of the parking lot, on
26th, a few blocks E of Kipling. Take 6th ave or I-70 to Wadsworth or
Kipling. Go N from 6th, or S from I-70, to 26th. Go W from Wadsworth,
or E from Kipling, to the park.
For more info, contact Karen at 720-838-8963 or info@...
I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.

VOLUNTEERS
Additional volunteers are needed for almost every race. Contact the
race directors for any of the races listed below, and/or for any other
races not listed. Here are a few races in particular that need help:
My Twilight Trail Series. 8/15. http://www.runuphillracing.cominfo@...
8/5; Evergreen Town Race.
From DTR member Todd Holmes, todd.holmes@...
"As most of you know, I help organize the Evergreen Town Race as the
main fund raiser for the Alpine Rescue Team, for which I volunteer as
a tough, burly rescue dude. We always need volunteers to help out at
the race, which is Sunday, August 6th at the Evergreen Lakehouse
(can't ask for a prettier setting!). Jobs include water stations,
registration, handing out t-shirts, pulling racers tags, and helping
hand out food stuff. It's actually kind of fun, and we'll even give
you a great free t-shirt for helping out! We try to have everything
cleaned up and out of there by noon.
If you have any interest in helping, or have questions, please let me
know. Or if you know of any groups, like girl scout or boy scout
groups, that might want to help, let me know that, too. They work
great at water stations.
Thanks!"

As most of you know, almost all of our trail runs are on Jefferson
County Open Space (JEFFOS) parks and trails. There is a meeting tonight about
North Table Mountain. I invite other trail runners to join me, and/or become in
the long run. Please read on.
JEFFOS parks are a great resource. JEFFOS does a good job of working
with trail users, mainly through their Trail Users Task Force (TUTF).
The TUTF is made up of hikers, bikers, and equestrians, as well as
staff and advisory board members of JEFFOS. Over the past several
months, I have been working with the TUTF to bring a trail runners
voice to their discussions. I am looking to get more trail runners
involved.
Tonight, at 7pm, there is a meeting to discuss trail and parking plans
for North Table Mountain. The TUTF has asked me to attend the meeting.
I invite any of you to join me there. The meeting is at the JEFFOS
offices, 700 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, 303-271-5925,
http://jeffco.us/openspace/index.htm
Over the longer term, I am looking for others to get involved to make
sure that the trail runners voice is heard. The goal is to make sure
that trail runners voice/needs is taken into account. If you are
interested in getting involved, or learning more about the issues,
please drop me a line. This is open to anyone who reads this, whether
or not you are on the group, or run with us.
JEFFOS began in the early 1970s, funded from a sales tax increase.
Over 3+ decades, JEFFOS has done a fabulous job buying, developing and
maintaining parks and trails. JEFFOS is very open to user and public
input.
The TUTF was created initially to resolve conflicts between the
different user groups (hikers, bikers, and equestrians). The role of
the TUTF has evolved over time to include input into new and existing
park development plans.
The biker group, especially, has done a very good job developing their
constituency and making their concerns known. This has come in
response to some recent plans to make some North Table trails off
limit to bikers. The bikers have a few well established bike clubs and
e-mail groups to facilitate their organizing efforts.
Until last winter, there was no representation from trail runners.
Since then, I have been working through the hiker group, more broadly
defined as foot access. Both JEFFOS and the hiker group has been very
open to my input. The Denver Trail Runners may represent the only
organized resource for area trail runners.
