THURSDAY RUN
Location: Green Mtn, Rooney Road
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:00pm. EARLY START TIME! The main group will start at 6pm, for the
next several weeks, to capture the fading daylight.
Sunset 6:37pm. End civil twilight 7:04pm. Moonrise 5:55pm, 97% full.
Run notes: We will run the reverse direction – faster runners will go
up the northern trail, via GM6; slower runners up the service road.
We'll regroup at the top, just past GM5, to watch the nearly full moon
rise over the city. From there, faster runners will take one of the
routes via UTAH3 and FLA; slower runners via UTAH2 and UTAH1. I'll
lead the slower groups this week. The moon should help light the way
to the finish.

+ Running shoes needed for homeless runner
+ Training partner wanted this weekend
+ Volunteers needed for Backroads
A former runner, who's been living in homeless shelters, is looking to
get back into running. He's a former 2:51 marathoner, and wants to
train to post a Boston qualifying time. He's looking for a pair of
size 12 shoes, new, or used but in decent shape, he can use until he
can afford to buy them himself. Please contact me and I'll pass it on.
++++++++++
From Maggie Close:
"I'm looking for a training partner to do a trail run with this
weekend, anywhere from 20-25 miles on trails near Denver, or in the
mountains...any suggestions? I did a 50K last year in 6:30 (this was
in Milwaukee, where I was living at the time). I am about a 11-12
minute per mile runner on the trails. On the road I'm between a
9:30-11:00 comfortably, depending on if I'm chatting with a fellow
runner or not."

THURSDAY RUN
Location: North Table Mtn.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm.
Run notes: There are not any short routes. The route is a big loop,
with a short out-and-back at the start/finish. I suggest that slower
runners go part way around the loop, turn around after about 35-40
minutes, and return the same way.
Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. It cools off quickly when

The run and picnic will go on as planned today. As of now, 3:30pm,
it's partly sunny and dry on the west side of town. The trails at Lair
drain well if they do get any rain. Last time we ran at Lair, the
weather was similar to today, and it was dry, and the trails in good
condition.
It cools off quickly when the sun goes down, so bring some warm and
dry clothes to change into for after the run.
Driving tip: If coming from 6th ave or I-70 (from Denver), to avoid
the usualy back-up on C470, continue W, up I70, to the Red Rocks exit,
#259. Turn left, from the off ramp, and head ~2.5mi down the hill,
past Red Rocks, to Morrison. Turn right in Morrison, and continue
4.5mi up hwy 74.
If the weather does take a dramatic turn for the worse in the next
couple of hours, we will move the run to Bear Creek Lake Park. Meet at
the dirt lot, at Morrison and Rooney roads, just west of C-470. We'll
decide whether to picnic or go to dinner at that time. If you are
unsure, you can call me between 5:15-5:30, 303-870-0487.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Lair o' the Bear. Potluck picnic after the run.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm. Regardless of when you start, please finish around 7:20 so
that we'll still have some daylight for the potluck. If you start
late, please cut your run short to finish on time. The run is out and
back, so there's no reason not to finish on time, regardless of how
late you start or slow you run.
Sunset 7:33pm; end civil twilight 8:01.
Potluck: Everyone is invited, regardless of whether you can make the
run, or whether you bring food. Certainly we'd like you to bring
something to share, but there's always extra, so please don't be
afraid to join the picnic if you forget to bring something.
What to bring: fruit, salads (e.g., green, pasta), creative outdoors
entrees (store bought food is fine), drinks, desserts, whatever.
Plates, napkins, utensils, etc., will be provided.
Bring warm/dry clothes for after the run. It cools off quickly when
the sun goes down, especially down in the river valley, where we will be.

MORNING RED ROCKS STAIRS
Start your mornings off right running the stairs at Red Rocks (RR). A
few DTR regulars meet there on most Tuesday mornings. They usually
start around 5:30am – 5:45am. However, you'll find people there almost
every morning.
You can either start at the stairs, or park in Morrison then run up,
as a warm-up. The DTR site has directions to RR. For Morrison, take
C470 to the Morrison, hwy 74 exit. Go W, through town, past the first
light and gas station, to the last diner on the left, T and Ts, and
park in their lot. /From there, cross and run up the road, for ~200
yards. Take a right at the first entrance into RR, and follow the
signs up. It's about a 1.25 mi run to the stairs.
This is a "show-n-go" event, meaning just start whenever you show up.
There won't be a group meeting at the start. We realize that people
have differently tight schedules in the morning. There are usually
others, not with DTR, running the stairs. Once at the stairs, you can
ask people if they're with DTR.
A stair workout may start on the bleachers, from the stage level. See
how far you can get with just one stride per bleacher level. This is
very hard. It is very unlikely you will make it to the top, or even
close, on just one step. I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, switch to two steps per level to the top.
After a few times up the bleachers (or you can skip the bleachers and
start here), switch to the stairs on the N side. You can start at the
stage level, half way up, or down at street level. On these smaller
stairs, I usually do just one stair per stride, even though I am able
to take 2-3 stairs at a time. If you skip the bleachers, you can start
with 2-3 stairs/step, then switch to one when you tire. The bleachers
and multiple steps emphasize leg/hip strength. A one step approach
better emphasizes leg speed and calf strength.

CO Relay
From Adam Lee: "I just found out from our team leader that we are in
need of one more runner on our team. Most of our runners average a
45-50 minute 10K pace, but that is not a requirement. Our team leader
informed me that the current opening measures up to about 12 miles of
running over the course of 3 legs. We are competing as a nonconformist
team, so we could probably rearrange which legs you want to run if
need be."
adaml@...
"I'm looking for a few more strong runners to fill out our team. Sub
42min 10k time would be a good fit. Open to men and women--we're
running in the non-conformist category. I/we've done the race several
times in the past and finished top 5 overall two years ago (good ole
boys, '04)."

SPEED WORKOUT
Twilight Trail Series race this Tuesday. See calendar below.

OTHER GROUPS
SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
August 19: Elk Meadow. Lower lot.
August 27: O'Fallon Park.
September 2: Genesee Overlook.
September 9: Bergen Peak Race (9am). Elk Meadow, upper parking lot.
SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow for
varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.

LEADVILLE PACERS
If you've ever wanted to learn about ultras, or just want to
experience a moving event, come up to Leadville this weekend. There
are still runners looking for pacers. You can find runners to pace on
race day. Just show up at one of the aid stations ready to go; Twin
Lakes and Fish Hatchery are the best spots to find someone to pace.
Announce yourself at the aid station, letting aid station workers and
racer crews know you are ready to pace. Ask unaccompanied runners when
they come in. Some runners will come into aid stations and ask if
there are any pacers. Others may not know that pacers are available
until you let them know. For more information about pacing, go to

GRAND CANYON
"Hi all, I have always wanted to hike the Grand Canyon rim to rim (one
way) in 1 or 2 days. If any one else would like to team up to do this
I have some time off in Early Oct. or would be happy to discuss
possible future plans for a different schedule. Looking forward to
any replies. Thanks, Ralph ralph548@... "

COLO RELAY
"Hoping to find a one or two people to be volunteer representatives
for our all girls team (LaSportivaGoLite). The race is put on by
Colorado Outward Bound (their fundraiser). Your time would be greatly
appreciated. You get a water bottle and some other goodies, plus if
you really get into to it, there is prize for the best exchange point.
At this point in time you can request where you want to be, your time
is usually 2 to 4 hours, and anywhere between Idaho and Glenwood
Springs, (you could vol and do a trail run, it is so beautiful up
there that time of year). PLEASE CALL or email me if slightly
interested! THANKS SO MUCH.

SPEED WORKOUT
Tuesday. 6:15pm. Boettcher Mansion. It looks like Yahoo truncated the
message with the details.
Directions: Take I70 to the Lookout Mountain/Buffalo Bill exit, #256,
then follow large brown signs.
Take a right (from Denver) from the off ramp.
Take a left on US40, the frontage road.
Go ¾ mi to Lookout Mtn Rd, the 2nd street.
Turn right and go ~1.4mi
Turn left at Colorow and go ~1.2mi to the mansion.
Meet in front of the nature center.
The workout will be clockwise on the Meadow Loop trail. Start at the
bottom of the hill, ~30 yards down from the lower junction with the
Forest Loop trail. Run hard, along Meadow Loop, to the upper junction
with Forest Loop. Jog down the short connector trail to the start.
We'll do 3-5 repeats; about 4-5 min hard, with about a 1:30 jog in
between. The footing is good, and it is mostly flat. You can leave
water bottles, etc., at the lower junction, to use during the workout.
The trails are at ~7,500', so it should be cooler than town.

This event does not repeat.
Event Location: Boettcher Mansion Notes:
This week's speed workout will be at Boettcher Mansion, a repeat of the workout we did in June. This puts us up at ~7,500', for cooler temps. We'll meet in front of the nature center at 6:15pm.
The workout will be a VO2Max type workout; 4 sets of ¾ mi hard, 4-5 min, with a ~1:30 easy jog in between, after a warm up. We will run the Meadow Loop Trail (see links below) clockwise: start at the bottom of the hill, ~30 yards S of the lower junction with the Forest Loop Trail; run hard to the upper junction; jog back down and repeat. The loop has good footing.
I am offering a special version of my Trail101 form clinic, with
special focus on the Pikes Peak and Imogene races. The clinic is Sun,
Aug 13, from 7am to about 11:30. I need a minimum of 5 people to sign
up, by Fri, Aug 11. I realize this is short notice. For details and
registration please visit: http://www.runuphillracing.com

SPEED WORKOUT
Green Mtn, Rooney Rd lot. 6:00pm. Tuesday. Justin will lead the
workout. Warm-up for 10-15 minutes, on the trails around the start,
then meet on the E side of the pedestrian bridge over C470. The
planned workout will be a tempo run/time trial, about 5km, from there,
to the Florida (dirt) lot. This is generally flat and rolling terrain.
If you don't want to time trial, then do a series of 4 min hard, 2 min
easy, along the same course. Regroup at the Florida lot. Then, you can
jog easily together either over the top, or back the same way.
The workouts will vary, including short sprints, VO2Max and tempo
intervals, using the trails and hills, instead of a track. We'll use
time and/or landmarks to mark the work and rest, rather than track
laps. The hard efforts generally will be on fairly non-technical
trails, and/or uphills. Locations will vary, using many of the same
trails we run on for Thursdays.
All levels are welcome. We usually stay in a small area – either back
and forth, or a short loop - so, no one will be left behind. If you
want to get faster, you have to practice faster.
Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of the hill or loop.

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
8/5: O'Fallon Park.
8/6 (Sunday): Evergreen Town Race (5k and 10k)
8/12: Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon.
SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow for
varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.
WEEKEND TRAINING RUNS AT PIKES PEAK
The Incline Club holds long runs, on Sundays, in the Pike Peak area.
They stay fairly low over the winter, then gradually venture up higher
as the trails dry in the spring. There is a large turnout, often >100
people, even over the winter, with a wide range of abilities. For more
info, go to http://www.inclineclub.com
If you are interested in carpooling to these runs, contact me and I
will share your e-mail address with others who are also interested.
Scott Elliot is leading weekend training runs at Pikes Peak, usually
on Saturdays. He'll be coming from Boulder, and can either pick people
up in the Denver area on the way, or meet people down there. Scott is
a former winner of the Ascent, but please don't be intimidated. Slower
runners will be joining him and are welcome. Scott has great knowledge
of the course and training, and loves to share it with others.

MONDAY "WEEKEND RECOVERY RUNS" at CROWN HILL
Karen Voss is leading "Weekend Recovery Runs", Monday evenings,
6:15pm, at Crown Hill Park, in Wheat Ridge. The runs will be about 3-6
mi. Meet at the trail sign, at the east end of the parking lot, on
26th, a few blocks E of Kipling. Take 6th ave or I-70 to Wadsworth or
Kipling. Go N from 6th, or S from I-70, to 26th. Go W from Wadsworth,
or E from Kipling, to the park.

I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.

VOLUNTEERS
Additional volunteers are needed for almost every race. Contact the
race directors for any of the races listed below, and/or for any other
races not listed. Here are a few races in particular that need help:

"As most of you know, I help organize the Evergreen Town Race as the
main fund raiser for the Alpine Rescue Team, for which I volunteer as
a tough, burly rescue dude. We always need volunteers to help out at
the race, which is Sunday, August 6th at the Evergreen Lakehouse
(can't ask for a prettier setting!). Jobs include water stations,
registration, handing out t-shirts, pulling racers tags, and helping
hand out food stuff. It's actually kind of fun, and we'll even give
you a great free t-shirt for helping out! We try to have everything
cleaned up and out of there by noon.
If you have any interest in helping, or have questions, please let me
know. Or if you know of any groups, like girl scout or boy scout
groups, that might want to help, let me know that, too. They work
great at water stations.
Thanks!"

As most of you know, almost all of our trail runs are on Jefferson
County Open Space (JEFFOS) parks and trails. There is a meeting tonight about
North Table Mountain. I invite other trail runners to join me, and/or become in
the long run. Please read on.
JEFFOS parks are a great resource. JEFFOS does a good job of working
with trail users, mainly through their Trail Users Task Force (TUTF).
The TUTF is made up of hikers, bikers, and equestrians, as well as
staff and advisory board members of JEFFOS. Over the past several
months, I have been working with the TUTF to bring a trail runners
voice to their discussions. I am looking to get more trail runners
involved.
Tonight, at 7pm, there is a meeting to discuss trail and parking plans
for North Table Mountain. The TUTF has asked me to attend the meeting.
I invite any of you to join me there. The meeting is at the JEFFOS
offices, 700 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, 303-271-5925,
http://jeffco.us/openspace/index.htm
Over the longer term, I am looking for others to get involved to make
sure that the trail runners voice is heard. The goal is to make sure
that trail runners voice/needs is taken into account. If you are
interested in getting involved, or learning more about the issues,
please drop me a line. This is open to anyone who reads this, whether
or not you are on the group, or run with us.
JEFFOS began in the early 1970s, funded from a sales tax increase.
Over 3+ decades, JEFFOS has done a fabulous job buying, developing and
maintaining parks and trails. JEFFOS is very open to user and public
input.
The TUTF was created initially to resolve conflicts between the
different user groups (hikers, bikers, and equestrians). The role of
the TUTF has evolved over time to include input into new and existing
park development plans.
The biker group, especially, has done a very good job developing their
constituency and making their concerns known. This has come in
response to some recent plans to make some North Table trails off
limit to bikers. The bikers have a few well established bike clubs and
e-mail groups to facilitate their organizing efforts.
Until last winter, there was no representation from trail runners.
Since then, I have been working through the hiker group, more broadly
defined as foot access. Both JEFFOS and the hiker group has been very
open to my input. The Denver Trail Runners may represent the only
organized resource for area trail runners.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Elk Meadow, lower lot (P2-4, T2-3, N2, BMms). Potluck party
at Kendra's, nearby, after the run. Everyone is invited, whether or
not you run.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:30pm. If interested in mountain biking before the run, meet me at
5:15pm.
Route: Everyone will follow the same loop. The intermediate and faster
runners will do an added out-and-back in the middle. There is a
shorter option. Please finish your run by 7:45, so you can make it to
the party by 8pm.
From the parking lot, go out the short path to the trail, then go
left, uphill. Follow the Sleepy "S" trail, for about 1 mile. Continue
straight on the Meadow View trail. This trail rolls through the trees
for ~2mi. At the Too Long trail junction, stay to the right. After a
couple of switchbacks and a short, steep descent, this drops you to
the top of the meadow. Stay left, at the Founders trail. After a short
rise, you have a long, easy downhill with good footing. Follow the
trail around to Painters Pause, down the hill, then up to the finish.
Total distances ~5mi.
For a short cut, go right at Founder trail. This makes the run 4.5mi.
For intermediate/faster runners, follow the Meadow View trail to the
Too Long trail. There, go left up the Too Long trail. Run up the hill
for 10-15 minutes from the junction. Then turn around and head back
down. Go left back onto the Meadow View trail, and complete the loop.
Some of those in the early group may be able to add the loop up Bergen
Peak trail, and down Too Long. This is a steep (not quite like
Falcon), 1,200'+ climb, that adds about 4 mi to the route.
Directions to Kendra's: From Elk Meadow, Go back to hwy 74, and turn
right. Continue on hwy 74 for another 2-2.5mi. After passing the
Safeway, as you are going downhill, turn left (only available turn) at
Douglas Park Rd. At the top of the hill, stay left at the first "Y",
then right at the next "Y", onto Pine Drive. Follow Pine for ~¾mi.
Around a big curve, when you start going uphill, look for a fire
hydrant on the left. Turn left just before the fire hydrant, and head
down the long driveway. Kendra's house is at the bottom. Park anywhere.
27895 Pine Drive
Evergreen, 80439
(303) 679-3202
Potluck: Bring food or drink if you can. If not, there's always plenty
of extra food to share. This is a great chance to get to know newer
DTR runners. We'll provide the plates, cups, napkins and plastic ware.
Kinds of food to bring include fruit, pasta/potato/green salad,
desserts, chips (please not everyone), sodas, juice, beer, wine.
Please, some of you bring a substantial item. Store bought food is OK.
Upcoming schedule (subject to change):
8/3 – Apex

ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,

SPEED WORKOUT
Lair of the Bear, 6:15pm. WEDNESDAY, not Tuesday, due to my Twilight
Trail race.
We'll warm-up on the Bruin Bluff trail, to the far SE end of the park.
The workout will be repeats between the bridge (at the edge of the
online map) and Little Park. Run hard in between. Jog easy for about
1:30, at either end, between hard sets. We'll repeat the hard/easy for
about 25 minutes. You can leave water at the bridge.

SATURDAY TRAINING RUN at PIKES
Several DTR runners are planning to carpool down and trail at Pikes
Peak this Saturday. Anyone - that means all abilities - is welcome to
join us, especially if you're training for Pikes or Imogene.
There will be a variety of abilities, doing a variety of different
workouts. Some plan to run up to the top, from the bottom. Others will
run in from Elk Park, or down and back up from the top. We'll then
pick up the uphill runners at the top. We can agree upon the various
running options and timing on the drive down.
We will be coming from different parts of town, so there are a variety
of places to meet. Joe will be coming from Lakewood. I'll be coming
from central Denver. We'll try to hook up with Scott Elliot's group,
coming down from Boulder (see below).
It'll be an early start – hope to be at the Pikes tollbooth when they
open, at 7am. That means a 5:45am start. This way we can avoid much of
the tourist traffic, beat the heat, and not lose the entire day
running and driving.
Please respond if interested. After I see who's coming, we can arrange
carpools and meeting points.

TUESDAY SPEED
Gudy Gaskill, Genesee. Meet at the school at 6:15pm. We'll be at
higher altitude and in the shade, so it should be cooler.
We'll actually be off the GG trail, but refer to those map/route
instructions. We'll warm up as a group, following the Thursday route
start to the Beaver Brook sign (A-B-C-D). If you are late, take the
shorter route via K-C-D. You can leave a pack/water at junction C,
then continue down the hill to the start of the workout.
The workout will be 6 sets of 3 min hard/ 1 min easy, up the hill,
from D to K. BRING A WATCH! Run uphill 3 min. This should be at about
a 3k-5k race effort. Walk/jog downhill for 1 min. Repeat 6 times. When
you hit the top, K, before the 6th repeat, jog/walk back down to C,
then continue the additional repeats. After the repeats, we'll regroup
at C, then jog back to the start together.
I plan to ride (road bike) up to the workout. Meet me at 5:15, at the
park-n-ride lot, on the N side of I70, at the Red Rocks exit, #259. At
the exit, from Denver, go straight, through the light, up the frontage
road. Continue past the lot at the corner, on the right, another 150'
up, to the lot on the left. It's just down and across from the gas
station.

OTHER GROUPS
SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
7/22: Genesee Overlook
7/29: Evergreen Lake House.

For more info, contact Karen at 720-838-8963 or info@...
I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.

SURVEYS
From Pat DeLuca: "I am an east coast runner. I am starting a travel
business to serve runners and as a part of my initial tasks I have
created a survey to assess the needs and desires of runners as they
travel. My problem is that all of my contacts are east coasters and I
want to get a temperature reading on other parts of the country. I
would appreciate if you would post this to the Denver Trail Runners
list and FYI - it is completely anonymous…
Calling all Runners!
Please pariciapate in our anonymous survey. The goal of the survey is
to better understand the needs and desires a runner may have while
vacationing. We hope to better serve the running community using the
information you provide.
The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

If you would like to particiapate in an additional followup focus
group, please contact me directly.

From Tony Pickering: "I am currently finishing up my sport psychology
dissertation at U-Idaho. I am looking for some endurance athletes to
complete an online survey about sport mindsets. I would like to ask if
you might post an invitation to your group members…
As part of my graduate school dissertation research project I am
conducting a study about sport mindsets. To finish my research, I am
in need of runners willing to complete a brief (10-15 minutes) survey
located at http://sportmindset.com . Participation is completely
voluntary and anonymous, and you are free to discontinue participation
at any time.
Sport mindsets are the beliefs, attitudes and opinions that athletes
bring to sport. Some mindsets help to enhance performance, while
others can make it harder to succeed and enjoy competition. My study
aims to better understand the types of mindsets that athletes bring to
their sport experiences.
I am writing here to ask if any of you would be willing to participate
in my research by completing the online survey located at
http://sportmindset.com . (Runners who choose to participate in the
study should enter "935" when prompted for a group PIN at the
beginning of the survey.)
Anyone visiting the website may request a free copy of the Sport
Mindset Study Summary Report. Participants who complete the survey may
also request a free Personal Sport Mindset Report.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Tony Pickering

"As most of you know, I help organize the Evergreen Town Race as the
main fund raiser for the Alpine Rescue Team, for which I volunteer as
a tough, burly rescue dude. We always need volunteers to help out at
the race, which is Sunday, August 5th at the Evergreen Lakehouse
(can't ask for a prettier setting!). Jobs include water stations,
registration, handing out t-shirts, pulling racers tags, and helping
hand out food stuff. It's actually kind of fun, and we'll even give
you a great free t-shirt for helping out! We try to have everything
cleaned up and out of there by noon.
If you have any interest in helping, or have questions, please let me
know. Or if you know of any groups, like girl scout or boy scout
groups, that might want to help, let me know that, too. They work
great at water stations.
Thanks!"

This Tuesday's speed workout will be in Genesee. We'll start at
6:15pm. It's mostly in the shade, and at higher altitude, so it should
be noticeably cooler there than in town.
Please refer to the Gudy Gaskill map/directions. More details will be
posted in the regular weekly message, later tonight or tomorrow.
I will be riding my road bike up to Genesee. If you'd like to join me
on the ride, meet me at 5:15pm, at the park-n-ride lots, at I70, at
the Red Rocks exit, #259. At the exit, from Denver, go through the

TUESDAY SPEED
No workout this week due to my Twilight Trail Series race.
We usually stay in a small area – either back

want to get faster, you have to practice faster.
Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of the hill or loop.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: North Table Mountain.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:15pm.
There aren't really any shorter routes on the run. If you are a slower
runner, and starting with the main group, please do this as an
out-and-back, rather than trying to do the whole loop. Please plan to
finish between 7:30 - 7:40pm.

+ Tuesday Speed Workout

+ Races: NEW EVENTS ADDED
TUESDAY SPEED
Join us for speed workouts on trails, on Tuesday evenings. I'll
usually post the workout and location on Mondays.
I will not be leading a speed workout next week, 7/11. Come out to run or
volunteer at my Twilight Trail Series race instead, White Ranch, 6:40pm.
http://www.runuphillracing.com
If you'd prefer to do a speed workout, let me know. If enough people
are interested, I'll set up a workout for the group.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Lair of the Bear (T3, P3, N2).
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group will start
at 6:20pm.
Lair is an out-and-back route that's easy to follow. For beginners,
you can turn around whenever you want. If you get there late, please
adjust your turn around so that you finish by 7:40pm.
If you are new to DTR, or unfamiliar with the trails, directions or
ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,
driving directions, FAQs, and other information.

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
7/8: Chief Hosa.
7/15: Evergreen Peak Race. Alderfer Three Sisters.
7/22: Genesee Overlook
7/29: Evergreen Lake House.

For more info, contact Karen at 720-838-8963 or info@...
I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.

LEADVILLE PACERS
"My name is Lisa Vaupel. I live in Navajo, New Mexico and have signed
up to do the Leadville 100. I am trying to find a pacer or pacers to
help me in the race. This will be my first 100 so I would really like
to have an experienced trail runner. Could you please help me get in
touch with someone who could help? I would truly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Lisa Vaupel

TWILIGHT TRAIL RACE #1 POSTPONED
White Ranch was closed due to the Ralston Creek fire. I've postponed
race#1 until next Tuesday, June 27. Registration deadlines have been
postponed too.

TUESDAY SPEED
Join us for speed workouts on trails, on Tuesday evenings. I'll
usually post the workout and location on Mondays.
This week's workout will be at Boettcher Mansion. We'll meet at
6:15pm. This puts us up at ~7,500', for cooler temps. There are a
couple of short loop trails on the property. I haven't run these
trails yet. We'll check them out during the warm-up. Then, I'll make
up a workout to match the terrain.
http://jeffco.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R14.htmhttp://jeffco.us/jeffco/openspace_uploads/windys.pdfhttp://jeffco.us/boettcher/index.htm
If you're interested in biking up from Lookout, let me know. We can
ride either road or mountain. We would need to meet a little after
5pm, and be on our bikes by 5:15, in order to make it to the workout,
with time to change, etc.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Mount Falcon, lower lot, time trial.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm (plus handicap). Please bring a watch to time your run.
We handicap the starts, with the slower runners first, so that we all
finish at about the same time. If you ran the time trial last month,
I'll have an assigned start time for you. If you missed last month's
but have run it before, you can estimate your time from that. If you
haven't run it before, please use the formula, on the route
description page, to find an appropriate start time.
Upcoming schedule (subject to change):
6/29, Deer Creek, potluck picnic after the run.
If you are new to DTR, or unfamiliar with the trails, directions or
ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,
driving directions, FAQs, and other information.

OTHER GROUPS
SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
6/24, Evergreen Lake House
SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.
SUNDAY INCLINE CLUB RUNS AT PIKES PEAK
The Incline Club holds long runs, on Sundays, in the Pike Peak area.
They stay fairly low over the winter, then gradually venture up higher
as the trails dry in the spring. There is a large turnout, often >100
people, even over the winter, with a wide range of abilities. For more
info, go to http://www.inclineclub.com
If you are interested in carpooling to these runs, contact me and I
will share your e-mail address with others who are also interested.
For more info, contact Karen at 720-838-8963 or info@...
I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once you tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.

WEEKEND PIKES
Scott Elliot is inviting others to caravan, carpool, and/or join him
on Sunday training runs at Pikes Peak. Scott will be driving from
Boulder, but said that he can easily meet people and pick them up in
Denver.
Scott is a former winner of the Ascent. Don't let that intimidate
slower runners from this trip. He's very welcoming to every one. He
has great knowledge of trail running and training, and can give you
lots of great tips.
"I will be leading half-day trips down to Pikes Peak every weekend,
usually on Saturdays, for all of this month and most of July. The plan
is to be at the entrance gate of the PP Auto Highway at or before the
7:00 AM opening time. I will then drive up to the Elk Park trailhead
turnoff (not well marked, but on the left side between two metal
posts) very near the 12-mile sign & the 12,000 ft. sign.
We will then run the 6 mile Elk Park trail, a gorgeous single-track
(also mountain-bikeable) wrapping around the northeast flank of Pikes,
to Barr Camp at 10,200 ft. Typically this will be a warm-up effort.
Barr Camp sells bottled water for $1.50, as well as various snacks.
You can also most likely drink safely out of mountain streams along
the way. The camp's website is BarrCamp.com.
The next part of the run depends on what you're looking to train for,
as well as your fitness level. Options include heading back to the
vehicle, running the Barr Trail to the summit (~6 miles & almost 4,000
ft. up), running the Barr Trail down (~6 miles & almost 4,000 ft.
down), or just hanging for a while at the camp and relaxing.
If we have the luxury of a driver who stays with the car (Honda
Element, carries up to 6 in close quarters or 4 with back seats
installed), OR an additional vehicle, then we can coordinate who
wishes to be picked up at the summit or at the Elk Park trailhead.
Some of you may wish to make a 24 mile run by doing an out-and-back,
others may wish to do much less. We'll just have to agree beforehand
on a strategy that safely and expeditiously allows for everyone to get
in a good workout and have transportation awaiting them at the end.
The weather can be spastic on Pikes, so prepare accordingly.
I will be purchasing a $100 annual vehicle pass for the auto highway,
which will be much cheaper than paying $35/car or $10/person each time
down. I will ask for donations to cover at least the gas expense, and
we should also be able to bring a cooler with yummy food & drinks for
post-workout enjoyment….
We will be leaving Boulder from my place around 5:20 AM (yikes!) --
this is necessary to beat the summer heat, and also to not lose the
entire day to the driving & the running.
Please call or email me with reasonable notice if you'd like to
carpool or form a caravan.
The more folks that join in, the better!
-S"

TUESDAY SPEED
Join us for speed workouts be on trails, on Tuesday evenings, 6pm.
I'll usually post the location on Mondays, and often the workout too.
This Tuesday's workout will be at Mt. Falcon, the upper lot. It should
be a little cooler at 7,500'. We'll start at 6:15pm. If you're late,
meet us at the start of the workout loop (below).
We will run a shorter loop, different from the last time we ran here.
From the junction of the Meadow, Parmalee, and Tower trails, we'll run
hard up Meadow, go left onto Tower, and continue hard up to the
observation tower. The recovery will be to jog easy, continuing down
the E side of Tower, back to the junction. We'll do 4-6 repeats.
The workouts will vary, including short sprints, VO2Max and tempo
intervals, using the trails and hills, instead of a track. We'll use
time and/or landmarks to mark the work and rest, rather than track
laps. The hard efforts will be on fairly non-technical trails.
Locations will vary, using many of the same trails we run on for
Thursdays.
All levels are welcome. We usually stay in a small area – either back
and forth, or a short loop - so, no one will be left behind. If you
want to get faster, you have to practice faster.
Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of the hill or loop.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Gudy Gaskill, Genesee. Meet at Ralston Elementary School.
The course is higher up, and mostly in the trees, so it should provide
some relief from the heat.
If you are unfamiliar with the trails, please read and bring a copy of
the map and route descriptions with you. The map should be added to
the DTR site in a few days. Until then, try
http://runuphillracing.com/GudyGaskill.html
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm. If you arrive late, please adjust your route so that you
finish around 7:30pm.
About the upcoming schedule:
It's too hot to do a Falcon time trial this week. We may try again
next week.
I'm looking at a new picnic location for the end of the month.
If you are new to DTR, or unfamiliar with the trails, directions or
ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,

bleachers and multiple steps emphasize leg/hip strength. A one step
approach better emphasizes leg speed and calf strength.

I will then drive up to the Elk Park trailhead
turnoff (not well marked, but on the left side between two metal
posts) very near the 12-mile sign & the 12,000 ft. sign.
We will then run the 6 mile Elk Park trail, a gorgeous singletrack
(also mountain-bikeable) wrapping around the northeast flank of Pikes,
to Barr Camp at 10,200 ft. Typically this will be a warmup effort.
Barr Camp sells bottled water for $1.50, as well as various snacks.
You can also most likely drink safely out of mountain streams along
the way. The camp's website is BarrCamp.com.
The next part of the run depends on what you're looking to train for,
as well as your fitness level. Options include heading back to the
vehicle, running the Barr Trail to the summit (~6 miles & almost 4,000
ft. up), running the Barr Trail down (~6 miles & almost 4,000 ft.
down), or just hanging for awhile at the camp and relaxing.

There's lots to do in Colorado in the summer. Here are a few
suggestions, and some new ideas, for the trail runner.

+ Do a Trail Race
+ Carpool
+ Volunteer at a race or trail work
+ Pace/Crew at Leadville
+ Orienteering
+ Burro Racing
RUN WITH US
Join us for a Thursday night run. Everyone is welcome at the runs. A
good time to start is at one of the picnics.
If Thursday nights don't work for you, suggest another day and time.
For example, in past years, we've had a regular early morning run. All
it takes is suggesting a time and place. I'll send it out to the
group, and see who shows up. It takes a while to build a new run. It
took a couple of months before we first had more than 10 people at a
Thursday night run.
RACE
Try a trail race. If you're a beginner or slower runner, running up
hills can be quite difficult. However, the scene at trail races is
generally much more relaxed and friendly than most road races,
triathlons, etc. Check out the calendar listed in the regular weekly
message.
CARPOOL
Save money and gas, and ride with other DTR runners. It's fun to go
with a group. If you're going to a race, to an Incline Club, etc., let
us know. I'll send it out to the group. I've suggested some events in
the regular newsletter.
VOLUNTEER
Give back to the running community. If you are injured, want to take a
day off, recovering after a big race, or just want to have a good
time, help out at a race. As a race director, we can never have too
many volunteers. You might be handing out water at an aid station,
directing runners, or helping with registration. It doesn't take any
experience.
I need additional help at my races.

TRAIL WORK
Trails don't build or maintain themselves. The parks have maintenance
staff. They also rely on volunteers, especially for bigger projects.
Consider putting some time on the trail. Here are some organizations
that use volunteers:
Jefferson County Open Space, were we do most of our runs.

LEADVILLE PACING/CREWING
If you've ever thought about doing an ultra, or if you haven't, but
are just curious about them, pacing and crewing is a great way to go.
You see an ultra close up, share in the experience and emotions, and
help out another runner.
The Leadville Trail 100, August 19-20, gives you a great opportunity
to have that experience.
At many ultras, they allow you to use a pacer over the latter half of
the race. Pacers keep the runner motivated, make sure they eat and
drink, and can be crucial to a runner's success, or even finishing. At
Leadville, pacers are also allowed to "mule", or carry extra gear
(water, food, clothing) for the runners. Muling is not allowed at most
other ultras.
Pacing is fairly easy and fun. You don't have to be a good runner.
Most of the racers will be walking, most of the second half. Even when
they're running, they won't be going that fast. You don't need prior
experience. You can learn more about pacing at
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/LT100Run/message/1815?l=1
Crewing involves driving to the various aid stations, and having the
runner's gear ready for them to exchange.
There are both local, and especially out of state runners who need
help at the race.
If you are interested in pacing or crewing, you can drop me a line and
I'll see if I can find someone for you. You can also go to the web sites:
http://www.leadvilletrail100.com/http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/LT100Run/
ORIENTEERING
Orienteering is often called "the thinking sport" because it requires
map reading, problem solving, and quick decision-making skills in
addition to athletic ability and general physical fitness.
You use a map and compass to locate a series of checkpoints.
Orienteering uses specialized topo maps, much more detailed than a
typical hiking map. You choose the route, either on or off trail, that
will help you find all the checkpoints in the shortest amount of time.
Each checkpoint, or "control" is a distinct mapped feature, such as a
trail junction, a boulder, a hilltop, etc. The controls are marked
with uniquely numbered orange-and-white flags.
Most meets will have a variety of courses available, from beginner to
advanced level. The beginner courses are usually about 1-1.5mi, with
the controls all on trail, and are suitable for kids. There's
something for every level. While the meets are timed, more of the
local meets are generally non-competitive events. There's no awards.
The times are primarily to track your progress. Check the web site for
meet details.

* The Laramie and Buena Vista events are national championships.
Beginners are welcome. However, there will be awards and intense
competition there.
BURRO RACING
Burro Racing is a long time Colorado tradition. It represents the days
when miners rushed to stake out a claim. I just did my first race. It
was fun, and very silly. As a beginner, who hasn't trained with a
specific burro, you'll be borrowing a burro, and they will have a lot
more say in how fast you go than you do. In some ways, that makes it
easy. You don't have to worry about how well you do.
There are a couple of events designed for beginners, listed below. You
will need to reserve a burro in advance.
6/24; Donkey Derby Days; ~3mi; Cripple Creek
7/23; Idaho Springs; 4-6mi
There are other, longer races listed on the web site.

+ Thursday evening run
+ Other group runs
+ Carpools and group trips: Garden of Gods, Evans, Colton, Lake City,

+ Talks, Clinics, and other Non-Race Events
+ Races.
TUESDAY SPEED
Join us for speed workouts be on trails, on Tuesday evenings, 6pm.
I'll usually post the location, and often the workout too, on Mondays.

Location: Hogback/Matthews Winter. Meet in the Stegosaurus lot.
Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm. If you arrive late, please adjust your route so that you
finish around 7:20pm.
Bike: Mtn bike before the run. Start at 5:15. You can get in a 45-50
min ride, and be back in time for the run.
Question about upcoming schedule:
Would you rather have the Falcon time trial on 6/15, before Mt. Evans
and Colton; or 6/22, before Golden Gate and Slacker?
If you are new to DTR, or unfamiliar with the trails, directions or
ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,

OTHER GROUPS
SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
6/10, Mt. Falcon Trail Race
6/17, O'Fallon Park
6/24, Evergreen Lake House
SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.
SUNDAY INCLINE CLUB RUNS AT PIKES PEAK
The Incline Club holds long runs, on Sundays, in the Pike Peak area.
They stay fairly low over the winter, then gradually venture up higher
as the trails dry in the spring. There is a large turnout, often >100
people, even over the winter, with a wide range of abilities. For more
info, go to http://www.inclineclub.com
If you are interested in carpooling to these runs, contact me and I
will share your e-mail address with others who are also interested.
For more info, contact Karen at 720-838-8963 or info@...
TUESDAY MORNING RED ROCKS STAIRS
Start your Tuesday mornings off right running the stairs at Red Rocks
(RR). Beginning next week, 3/7, several DTR regulars will be meeting
on Tuesday mornings. They usually start around 5:30am – 5:45am.
I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once I tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.
After a few times up the bleachers, then switch to the stairs on the N
side. You can start at the stage level, half way up, or down at street
level. On these smaller stairs, I usually do just one stair per step,
even though I can do more. If you skip the bleachers, you can start
with 2-3 stairs/step, then switch to one when you tire. The bleachers
and multiple steps emphasize leg/hip strength. A one step approach
emphasizes more leg speed and calf strength.
