TUESDAY SPEED
I will be leading a free, speed workout, on trails, on Tuesday
evenings, weather permitting. I'll post the location, and often the
workout too, on Mondays.

The workouts will vary, including short sprints, VO2Max and tempo
intervals, using the trails and hills, instead of a track. We'll use
time and/or landmarks to mark the work and rest, rather than track
laps. The hard efforts will be on fairly non-technical trails.
Locations will vary, using many of the same trails we run on for
Thursdays.

All levels are welcome. We usually will stay in a small area – either
back and forth, or a short loop - so, no one will be left behind. If
you want to get faster, you have to practice faster.

Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of hill or loop.

WEEKEND & MONDAY GROUPS

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
May 6: Evergreen Lake House.

SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@... 303-279-6152.

SUNDAY INCLINE CLUB RUNS AT PIKES PEAK
The Incline Club holds long runs, on Sundays, in the Pike Peak area.
They stay fairly low over the winter, then gradually venture up higher
as the trails dry in the spring. There is a large turnout, often >100
people, even over the winter, with a wide range of abilities. For more
info, go to http://www.inclineclub.com

If you are interested in carpooling to these runs, contact me and I
will share your e-mail address with others who are also interested.

MONDAY "WEEKEND RECOVERY RUNS" at CROWN HILL
Karen Voss (DTR regular) is starting a new running group on Monday
evenings. The "Weekend Recovery Runs" will meet at Crown Hill Park, in
Wheat Ridge, at 6;15pm, on Monday evenings. The runs will be about 3-6
mi. Meet at the trail sign, at the east end of the parking lot, on
26th, a few blocks E of Kipling. Take 6th ave or I-70 to Wadsworth or
Kipling. Go N from 6th, or S from I-70, to 26th. Go W from Wadsworth,
or E from Kipling, to the park.

For more info, contact Karen at 720-838-8963 or info@...

TUESDAY MORNING RED ROCKS STAIRS
Start your Tuesday mornings off right running the stairs at Red Rocks
(RR). Beginning next week, 3/7, several DTR regulars will be meeting
on Tuesday mornings. They usually start around 5:30am – 5:45am.

You can either start at the stairs, or park in Morrison then run up,
as a warm-up. The DTR site has directions to RR. For Morrison, take
C470 to the Morrison, hwy 74 exit. Go W, through town, past the first
light and gas station, to the last diner on the left, T and Ts, and
park in their lot. /From there, cross and run up the road, for ~200
yards. Take a right at the first entrance into RR, and follow the
signs up. It's about a 1.25 mi run to the stairs.

This is a "show-n-go" event, meaning just start whenever you show up.
There won't be a group meeting at the start. We realize that people
have differently tight schedules in the morning. There are usually
others, not with DTR, running the stairs. Once at the stairs, you can
ask people if they're with DTR.

A stair workout may start on the bleachers, from the stage level. See
how far you can get with just one stride per bleacher level. This is
very hard. It is very unlikely you will make it to the top, or even
close, on just one step. I've never made it more than 50, out of 67
rows. Once I tire, I'll switch to two steps per level to the top.
After a few times up the bleachers, then switch to the stairs on the N
side. You can start at the stage level, half way up, or down at street
level. On these smaller stairs, I usually do just one stair per step,
even though I can do more. If you skip the bleachers, you can start
with 2-3 stairs/step, then switch to one when you tire. The bleachers
and multiple steps emphasize leg/hip strength. A one step approach
emphasizes more leg speed and calf strength.

RMRR TROPHY SERIES CHANGE
This weekend's race has been changed to Saturday, not Sunday. It is
still 5mi, and still at the Carson Nature Center.

TRAIL CLINICS
Back for the 5th year, I will be holding several trail running form
clinics.

Any energy that doesn't go into propelling you forward is wasted.
These flaws put added stress on your joints and muscles, which leads
to a greater risk of injury, and greater and quicker fatigue.

The clinics will teach you how to:
     * Improve your efficiency.
     * Increase running enjoyment.
     * Reduce the pain of running.
     * Increase the longevity of your running career.

5/13 – Trail Running 102. Intermediate to advanced levels.
5/21 – Trail Running 101. All levels.
6/4 – Trail Running 101. All levels.

All clinics will take place in the western Denver foothills, 8am –
noon. Registration is in advance only. Space is limited.

*DTR will take a road trip to the Spring Creek Memorial, July 1, in
Steamboat Springs. The races are 9.5mi and 5k. John Chapman, former
DTR regular, now lives in Steamboat, and is the race director. He has
offered us room to stay at his house. Let me know if you are

Location: Matthews/Winters Park

Meet: Main parking area for Matthews/Winters Park.
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps

Time: 6:00pm

Workout: Critical Velocity Training: ~6 minutes hard, ~2 minutes
recovery.

Terrain: Not technical. First half of the hard run is on a flat,
smooth trail; the second half is up a moderate hill. The recovery
is downhill.

Warmup: About 15-20 minutes easy jog together, including a couple
of easy loops together on the workout course.

The workout loop will be on the Village Walk Trail, beginning at the
bridge just south of the parking lot. Run the loop clockwise,
staying right at the intersection with the Red Rocks Trail, to the
top of the rise. Recover down, back to the bridge. Approx 3-5
repeats.

Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at the start of the
loop, if desired.

All levels are welcome. We stay together during the warmup. Then,
the workout will be confined to a relatively short loop. So, no one
will be left behind. Remember, if you want to get faster, you have
to practice faster.

IN THE NEWS – Resurgence of American Marathoning?
On Sunday, American Deena Kastor won the London Marathon in 2:19 36,
taking 1:40 off the old record, that she set there in 2003. She ran
each half of the race in 1:09:48.

Last Monday, at the Boston Marathon, the US men placed 5 in the top
10, and 7 in the top 15. The Kenyans also placed 7 in the top 15 (the
only other being a Japanese runner in 6th), making it a virtual dual
meet. If it were a dual meet, the US would have beaten the Kenyans, 29
(3-4-5-7-10) to 32 (1-2-8-9-12).

April 25

Location: Bear Creek Lake Park

Meet: Regular location - the dirt lot, across from the Conoco station.
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps

Time: 6:00pm

Workout: VO2Max type loop, ~4 min hard, ~1 min recovery.

Terrain: Not technical. First half of the hard run is on a flat,
smooth path; the second half is up a mild hill. The recovery is downhill.

Warm-up: About 15-20 min easy jog together to the start. We may also
do one easy loop together to preview the course.

If late: Cross the street and follow the bike path into the park.
Don't cross the bridge, but stay straight onto the park road. Just
past the tollbooth, stay left at the fork. About 1 mi down the road,
at the Fishermen's lot, the road curves left and climbs steeply. Just
before there, by the Coyote Crossing sign, look for a trail on the
left. Take the single-track trail, from the left side of the road,
that goes up to the right of the creek. Don't head up the dirt road to
Coyote Crossing. The loop starts at the next trail junction, ~40 yards
up. That's the start of the loop.

The workout loop will go E, right from there, on the flat path. Run
that path hard. Take a sharp left at the end, and continue hard up to
the next junction. It's a moderate climb. At the junction, go left,
and recover easy, downhill, back to the start. Repeat the hard/easy
loop for about 25 minutes.

Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of loop, if wanted.

All levels are welcome. We stay together during the warm-up. Then, we
usually will stay in a small area – either back and forth, or a short
loop. So, no one will be left behind. If you want to get faster, you
have to practice faster.

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Mt. Falcon, upper lot (T3, P2-3, N2); BMms.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm. Or, mtn bike up from the lower lot. Meet at 5pm. See below.

Dinner: Many of us usually go to dinner after the runs. All are
invited. We pick the location at the end of the run. Bring warm and
dry clothes to change into.

Directions: Take HWY 285, SW from C-470, ~4.5mi, to the second exit.
Exit and go right, N onto Parmalee Gulch Rd. About 3mi up the road,
before the top, look for signs to Mt. Falcon. Turn right onto Picutis
Road, and follow the signs to Mt. Falcon. Go through the horse lot and
park in the second lot, closer to the trailhead.

Routes: Everyone will start out on the same trail. From the lot, head
down the main Castle Trail. Just a short way down, take the first
right onto Parmalee Trail. We'll stay together until there. The trail
drops steeply for a bit, the loops around overlooking hwy 285. The
trail continues for 2mi to "KEY" junction with Meadow, Tower and Old
Ute trails. Here, the routes will split.

Short1: From the KEY junction, go left onto the Meadow trail. Follow
it to the Castle Trail. Go left on the Castle trail to the finish.
Short2: From the KEY junction, go right onto the Meadow trail. Shortly
thereafter, take the next left, also Meadow, to the Castle trail. Go
left, up the hill, and follow Castle back to the finish. This is about
1/3 mile longer than Short1.

Intermediate1: From the KEY junction, go right, and stay right at the
next junction, onto Old Ute. Follow it up and down towards Devils
Elbow. The trails split and come back together twice. We generally
stay right in both directions. After returning down Old Ute, stay
straight on Meadow to the Castle trail. Go left on the Castle trail to
the finish.
Intermediate2: Follow Intermediate1 to Devils Elbow and back. After
returning down Old Ute, go right on Meadow, then follow Short2 to the
finish.

Long: Follow the intermediate routes around Devils Elbow and back.
After returning down Old Ute, stay straight on Meadow. Just past the
KEY junction, bear left onto the Tower trail. Follow it over the
ridge, and back to the Meadow trail. There, take a sharp right,
downhill, and return back to the KEY junction. Go left onto the Meadow
Trail, and follow Short2 to the finish.

Extra Long: After finishing the Devil's loop, return to the KEY
junction. Go right, back onto the Parmalee trail, and reverse the
route back to the start.

Mtn Bike: Meet at the lower lot at 5pm. Bring a pack with extra
clothes, a lock for you bike at the top, and a jacket for the ride
down. We should be able to complete the ride back down before dark.
Use the DTR link below for directions to the lower lot.

WEEKEND & MONDAY GROUPS

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
April 22: Evergreen High School. Meet at the track. We will run up to
3 sisters.
April 29: O'Fallon Park.
May 6: Evergreen Lake House.

SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@..., 303-279-6152.

TUESDAY SPEED
I will be leading a free, speed workout, on trails, on Tuesday
evenings, weather permitting. The workouts will vary, including short
sprints, VO2Max and tempo intervals, using the trails and hills,
instead of a track. We'll use time and/or landmarks to mark the work
and rest, rather than track laps. Location will vary, using many of
the same trails we run on for Thursdays. I'll post the location, and
maybe the workout on Mondays. Bring water, extra clothing, etc., to
leave at start of hill, if wanted.

All levels are welcome. We usually will stay in a small area – either
back and forth, or a short loop, so, no one will be left behind. If
you want to get fast, you have to practice fast.

DISCOUNTS ON NUUN
From Ben Nachtrieb: "Hey I'm part of adventure racing Team DART-nuun
now. Just passing on a promotional discount. Its a newer less known
product. I reluctantly tried it for the first time while racing in
Brazil last year and have been using it since. I was afraid to try
something new but no popping pills has kept me using it. Here's there
little promo and more importantly how to get the discount:

DART has teamed up with nuun, the leader in portable electrolyte
replacement, to extend an offer of 20% off your nuun purchases by
utilizing the following code upon checkout from the nuun website.

Code: TEAMDART
http://www.nuun.com/06-get.asp

Why use nuun in a race or any event where being on top of your game is
pertinent? nuun is fast to use and produces a refreshing hypotonic
solution which your body will absorb faster than water or salt tabs.
Your body is, therefore, able to restore optimal water and electrolyte
balance more quickly.

Answer any questions you might have about the product at the website:
http://www.nuun.com/default.asp"

A portion of the proceeds will go towards DART's racing and community
activities.

This week's speed workout will be at Green Mtn, weather permitting.*
Meet at the Rooney Rd lot, Tuesday, at 6pm.

The speed workouts are for all running levels. We will stay in a small
area, so no one will be left behind. If you want to get faster, you have
to practice faster.

After a warm up, we'll do short repeats on a short, steep hill – run
hard uphill (~45sec - 1min), easy recovery down.

On the route map, the warm-up will be the small loop to GM1 and back.
Then. we'll start up the dirt road towards GM5, then go left on the
trail (red line). Follow the red line N, to where it turns 90 degrees
right. The repeats will on the hill leading up to that turn.

Bring extra clothing, water, etc., to leave at the bottom of the hill.

* If it's raining, or the trails are muddy, we'll move the workout to
Red Rocks. Meet at the Trading Post. If you're unsure, you can check
the Green Mtn lot first (look for me in a brown Saturn), or call my
cell, 303-870-0487. We'll start 10 min later, so you'll have time to
check Green first. We'll do a similar workout on the hilly, paved roads.

TUESDAY SPEED
I will be leading a free, speed workout, on trails, on Tuesday
evenings, weather permitting. The workouts will vary, including short
sprints, VO2Max and tempo intervals, using the trails and hills,
instead of a track. We'll use time and/or landmarks to mark the work
and rest, rather than track laps. Location will vary, using many of
the same trails we run on for Thursdays. I'll post the location, and
maybe the workout on Mondays. This is FREE. All levels are welcome.
4/11, 6pm; South Table Mtn. Repeat loops, ~5:00 hard, moderate
downhill, finishing with short, steep uphill; 1:30 easy, flat. Bring
water, extra clothing, etc., to leave at start of loop, if wanted.

A portion of the proceeds will go towards DART's racing and community
activities.

The first Tuesday speed workout will be tomorrow, 4/11, 6pm, at South Table Mtn.

The workout will be 4-5 repeats, of a loop, that I estimate to be about 5 min hard, 2 min easy. We will warm up together. The warmup will include doing the loop once together. This will give you a chance to see it easy, and get an idea of how long it will take, before we run it hard. We will then repeat the workout for about 25 minutes - faster runners will do more repeats than slower runners during this time. Then, we will jog back to the cars together. You can bring water, etc., to stash on the trail, by the start of the loop.

All abilities are welcome. The loop and time based workout allows a range of abilities to do the same workout together.

The School of Mines (SoM) fireworks show was postponed, due to the high winds. It has been rescheduled for tomorrow night, Friday, 8:30pm, at the SoM stadium, near 12th & Maple, in Golden. This is the best fireworks show in the state, topping even the biggest ones on July 4.

Join us for a long run, this Sunday, on the Mesa Trail, in Boulder.

We will start from Chautauqua Park, at the N end. The run is
out-and-back, so you can go as short or long as you like. Some of us
may take side trails that climb to the top of the flatirons. We'll run
for about 2-3 hours. Bring water.

There will be two meeting/carpool locations, both at 7:30am.

From the W side of town, meet at the Loaf n Jug in Golden. From the
intersection of hwys 6, 58 & 93 in Golden, go north on hwy 93 towards
Boulder. After 3/4mi, turn right at the first right, Iowa, then take
the first left. There's parking just past the Loaf n Jug.

From Denver, meet at the park-n-ride lot, at 70th & Broadway, near the
I25, US36, I76 junctions. From the S, via I25, 70th avenue exit, same
as the I-76 West exit, #216B. Turn left on 70th for one block. From
the east, take hwy 270, to US36, to the Broadway (first) exit. Go left
one block.

If you miss us at the above locations, meet us at Chautauqua at
8:15am. Meet by the ranger/info building, just off the start of the trail.

Take US 36 towards Boulder. Take the Baseline exit, the last exit
before 28th. Go left, towards the hills, about 1.3mi. Enter Chautauqua
park on the left. If the lot is full, parking is available on the
surrounding streets.

From Golden, take hwy 93 N towards Boulder. Turn left at Baseline, and
go about 1mi.

The Mesa Trail is very popular in Boulder. It runs ~6.5mi along the
base of the flatirons, from Eldorado Springs to Chautauqua Park, with
several access points, and connections to many other trails and parks.
The trail is a series of rolling ups and downs, some steep, with a mix
of smooth and technical terrain. Much of the trail is forested, so it
can be wet or icy over the winter. The trails are well signed. Dogs
are allowed, but not bikes. There's water and bathrooms at Chautauqua,
bathrooms only at Eldorado.

This Thursday's run includes a fireworks show at the Colorado School
of Mines. The annual E-Days show is created by the engineering
students. It's the best fireworks show in the state. Even if you can't
make the run, come watch the show in Golden. It usually starts about
9pm, and goes for 30 minutes.

Location: North Table Mtn (T3, P3, N2). The fast, and maybe the early
group, will take a new, longer, not on the web site map yet, route up,
shortly after the start. I'll explain it on Thursday. Many of you
should still go the other way.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at

to the fireworks show. The show is at the School of Mines stadium,
near 12th and Birch, about 5 blocks up from Washington (the main
street in Golden. Bring warm clothes, and possibly ear plugs.

CHOCOLATE MILK
According to the results of a small study, reported in the February
issue of the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise
Metabolism, chocolate milk did as well as Gatorade, and significantly
better than Endurox R4. The study was very limited in scope, and you
have to be cautious reaching broad conclusions from such a study.
However, it does raise some interesting points.

1) Real food can be a good or better, and usually a lot cheaper than
fancy, highly marketed sports drinks.
2) Related to above, there are many other cheaper alternatives. For
example, many of the comments on this story have widely reported that
Michael Phelps, Olympic swimming star, drinks Carnation Instant
Breakfast, also a lot cheaper than most sports drinks.
3) Ingesting carbohydrates, shortly after exercise, speeds muscle
recovery.
4) Many believe that taking protein, with the carbs, speeds the
replenishment of depleted muscle glycogen. Both chocolate milk and R4
have a similar ~ 4:1 carb:protein ratio.

You can do a search to find more details and many different stories on
the study. One I particularly liked is

WEEKEND & MONDAY GROUPS

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
April 1 - Elk Meadow. Lower lot.

SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@..., 303-279-6152.

PRE-RACE ROUTINE
Rocky Mountain Sports Magazine wants ideas for an article. They want
you to to "Describe your pre-race ritual or routine. This could be
some kind of special/regular warm-up, wearing a particular piece(s) of
clothing or shoes (or both) for luck, or anything interesting or
different. Also, it could be some kind of mental/relaxation ritual.
Whatever runners do before a race."

THURSDAY RUN
Location: Bear Creek Lake Park. (T2, P1-2, N3). With the recent snow,
I expect most of the trails to still be muddy. We try to stay off of
muddy trails to help preserve them. BCLP has some good roads we can
run if the trails are wet.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm.

WEEKEND & MONDAY GROUPS

SATURDAY EVERGREEN
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
3/18 - Elk Meadow. Lower lot.
3/25 - Upper Bear Creek. 5 mile marker.

SUNDAY GOLDEN
Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@..., 303-279-6152.

PIKES REGISTRATION DISCUSSION
There have been numerous discussions going on about changing the
registration system for Pikes Peak. DTR is not meant to be a
discussion forum. I apologize if I ignored that principle when I
posted my statement the other week. If you feel strongly about the
registration process, whether you favor keeping it as it is, changing
it to some sore of lottery system, or something else, please let them
know. You can read some of the arguments on different sides at:

Join us for what may be the last full moon run of the season.

When: Tuesday, March 14, 6:15pm

Where: Chief Hosa. Directions are on the DTR site,
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com

Pace: Social. We'll try to keep everyone together, and frequently regroup.

Route: Easy out-and-back. Moderate climb. Not technical. Mostly dirt
roads. Very little traffic. Very short paved section. The last ~1mi
will be snow covered. The lower parts are well maintained. Easy route
to follow.

* Start up the road, to the right of the lodge.
* ~2/3 mi up, stay right at the 3-way junction. Remember this for the
way back.
* ~2mi from the start, make a sharp left at the paved road.
* The pavement ends after 1/3mi. Stay left of the lot, and go around
the chain.
* Continue another mile up to the flag pole.

If you don't want to go all the way up, you'll have a good view of the
moon from the lot, by the chain.

Return back the same way:
* Remember to turn right, back onto the dirt road, ~1/3mi after the chain.
* Pay attention at the lower 3-way junction. Stay left to return the
same way. Some of us will purposely go the other way, to the right.
That is 3/4 mi longer. It's easy to end up going right if you're not
paying attention.

Both the Ascent and Marathon are full. The Ascent filled in < 10 hrs;
the Marathon in < 24 hrs.

I think they should change the registration process. I am urging
people to contact them.

I think a lottery system is better and more fair. Allow people to
register (sign up for the lottery) over a week or so. Not everyone has the
luxury of being at their computer when registration opens. I know some people
who couldn't get in the Ascent because they were busy at work when registration
opened (ignoring the ethical issue of whether you should even be doing this at
work), and it was already full by the time they logged on. They could still do
it online with active.com. The Mt. Washington race (similarly big hill climb in
NH) uses a lottery with active.com. They could also weight the lottery (like
Hardrock does) or hold a specified number of spaces open for people on
consecutive streaks.

If you feel like I do, and/or have other ideas for the registration,
please contact them. They seem to be a fairly rigid organization. It
will take a lot of voices to get them to change.

This is not about sour grapes. I got into the race I wanted. This is
about making a system better for the running community. I would
recommend the same for any race that is that fills so quickly, so far
ahead of the race.

WEEKEND GROUPS
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
3/4 - Genesee Overlook
3/11 - Evergreen HS
3/18 - Elk Meadow, lower lot
3/25 - Upper Bear Creek, 5mi marker

Golden weekend runs are Sundays at 7:30 a.m. Meet outside Brooks
Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden, and run on one of six or
more different routes in the Golden area. All of the courses allow
for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the
interests of the runners on that day. For further information contact
Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@..., 303-279-6152.

The runs will be about 3-6
mi, on smooth dirt paths. Meet at the trail sign, at the east end of
the parking lot, on 26th, a few blocks E of Kipling. Take 6th ave or
I-70 to Wadsworth or Kipling. Go N from 6th, or S from I-70, to 26th.
Go W from Wadsworth, or E from Kipling, to the park.

A one step approach
emphasizes more leg speed and calf strength.

giving a couple of presentations of her journey:

Join the Denver Trail Runners team at the Run the Register stair
climb, Feb. 26. The stair climb race goes up the Wells Fargo, "Cash
Register" building, downtown Denver. The climb is 47 floors, 1,014
stairs, about 6-12 minutes of effort for most runners. A few of us did
some practice runs there last weekend. It's not quite the same as
running up a steep hill. The race benefits the American Lung
Association. http://www.runtheregister.com/

THURSDAY RUN

Location: Green Mtn (T3, P2-4, N3). There's a new variation for the
faster runners, which I'll explain on Thursday.

In case of rain/mud, the run will be moved to Bear Creek Lake Park.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm.

Ride: Weather permitting, a group of us will mtn. bike before the run.
We'll start the ride at 5pm (arrive early so you're ready to go at 5),
and ride for about an hour. That will leave time to change for the
ride. Sunset is at 5:30, with civil twilight at 5:58. Lights are still
recommended, but you may be able to get away without them (ride only).

The next Full Moon run will be Monday, Feb 13. The full moon is
actually Sunday night. Look for a message later in the week about this
run.

If you are new to DTR, or unfamiliar with the trails, directions or
ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,
driving directions, FAQs, and other information.

these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC

THURSDAY RUN

Location: Lookout/Chimney Gulch (T3, P3, N2). There are both trail and
road options. The trail is likely to be icy, especially on the upper
section. Screw shoes are strongly recommended. If you are
uncomfortable on ice, the road is a great run too. Some people will take the
trail up to Windy Saddle, continue up on the road from there, then stay on the
road all the way back down.

Screw shoe info:

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm.

ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,

Join the Denver Trail Runners (DTR) team at the Run the Register race on Sun,
Feb 26. It's a race of 47 floors, 1,014 stairs, up the Wells Fargo bldg (aka
Cash Register bldg). Stair climbs are short (I'm guessing the winning time will
be under 6 min), high intensity, and fun. The race benefits the American Lung
Association. Mike Robbert has signed up as the DTR captain. Join the DTR team
when you sign up.

THURSDAY RUN

Location: Chief Hosa (T=1-2, P=2, N=2). The route is easy to follow.
It's mostly on a maintained, dirt road. There will be snow at the top,
but you can skip that if you prefer.

Time: The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at
6:15pm.

Directions: Take I70 to the Chief Hosa exit, #253. It's only 6mi up
the road from Golden; and, there's much less traffic going up the hill
than on C-470. Go to the S side of the hwy (left from Denver). Turn
left for ~100ft. Stay left at the Y, and immediately park along the
right side of the road.

Route: Start back at the "Y", and go up the road to the right. About
0.6mi up, there's a 3-way junction. Remember this for the return. Stay
right, and continue another 1.4mi to the paved road. Remember this
junction too. Take a sharp left, and continue up the hill. After
1/3mi, you'll pass a chain across the road, and the road becomes dirt.
It's another mile to the top. There will be snow and/or some ice on
this section. At the top, continue up to and touch the flagpole.

We'll take different routes on the way down, depending on speed. Slow
runners will go back the same way we came up. Remember to turn right
on the dirt road, shortly after passing the chain. Another 1.4 mi
down, stay left at the 3-way junction.

Intermediate runners will start down the same way, turning right on
the dirt road, to the 3-way junction. Stay right at the junction. This
road drops fairly steeply towards I70. At the bottom, the road curves
left, climbs up a bit, then continues back to the Y, from the other
direction. This way is ~¾ mi longer.

Faster runners will go past the dirt road the first time, and continue
down the paved road for a while. We'll make a group decision on how
far down to go. Then, we'll turn and head back up the paved road to
the dirt road. There, we'll go left down the dirt road. At the 3-way,
we'll go right, and return to the Y via the intermediate route.

I'm putting on a FREE snowshoe race, this Sunday, January 29, 10:30am,
at Echo Lake. Location: Echo Lake is at the base of the Mt. Evans toll
road, 13 mi from Idaho Springs, 18 mi from Evergreen.

There will be two courses. The short course will be about 2mi with
~350' of climbing. The long course will be 5m-6m, with 1,000'+ of
climbing. Both courses will feature lots of powder and single track,
several log crossings and low branches, and a few other surprises. The
courses will be almost entirely in the tress, well protected from the
weather. They will be extremely well marked.

Join me on Saturday as I set the course. It'll take 4-5 hours of
hiking on snowshoes.

Registration: Not needed. Just show up on Sunday. However, let me know
if you'd like to help me set the course on Saturday.

Post race: No awards, but join us after at a nearby restaurant or
house. Location will be announced at the race.

"My name is Krissy Falk, and I am a graduate student in the Locomotion
Laboratory at CU, as well as a trail runner. I am currently looking
for subjects who would like to participate in a study on stride
frequency in uphill and downhill running and its effect on
biomechanics and metabolic cost. Participation is completely
voluntary. In order to participate, you must be 18-35 years old,
injury-free, have had no previous heart trouble (There is a short
questionnaire related to cardiac health and injury, which I can do
over the phone or by e-mail) and run at least 30 miles a week,
preferably hill running.

The study consists of three or four sessions: an orientation (<1
hour), one session on the level, and one at three degrees (5.2%)
uphill, and possibly one at three degrees (5.2%) downhill, each of
which will take less than 2 hours, probably closer to 1.5. Ideally, I
would like to have subjects do all four sessions, but due to the time
commitment, I would understand if it were only possible to do the
first three. Sessions would be scheduled at your convenience.

If you participate, I will be able to tell you if the stride frequency
you choose naturally is actually the most metabolically efficient
stride frequency for you, on the level, and for however many slopes
you choose to do. Additionally, I will be able to tell you if, should
your preferred stride frequency differ from your metabolically optimal
one, you should quicken or slow down your stride frequency to become
more efficient. Orientations will start later this week.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please call me
at (303) 492-0926 or e-mail me anytime at Kristine.Falk@...
and we can get through the questionnaire and schedule a time for
orientation. Feel free to pass this e-mail on to anyone else who might
be interested. Thanks much and enjoy the trails!"

Haile Gebrselassie, of Ethiopia, shattered the world half-marathon record on
Sunday. He ran 58:55, taking 21 seconds off the previous record, while running
the second half of the Rock n Roll Marathon, in Arizona. That's just under a
4:30 pace. En route, he also took 30 seconds off the 20km record, clicking in at
55:48. Don't try this at home kids.

This Thursday's run is at Red Rocks. Forecast calls for strong winds
and a chance of rain, so Red Rocks is a safe bet. Depending on
conditions, you'll have the option of either running the road or trail
route. This will be the full moon run for the month (it's actually
early Sat morning). That means that we'll try to keep the pace social.
The early group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:15pm.

If you are new to these trails, or to DTR, please follow the link
below to maps, route descriptions, driving directions, FAQs, and other
information.

Kristine Falk wrote:

This Sunday is the first Rocky Mountain Road Runners (RMRR) Trophy
Series (TS) race of the year.

The TS is a unique and fun race series that features a handicapped
start and scoring system. That means that the slower runners/walkers
start first, and the faster ones start later. That makes for fun and
exciting finishes, with everyone finishing at about the same time.

Your start time is based on a handicap score from previous TS races.
For newcomers, RMRR can use a recent race time (e.g., 5k/10k) to
assign you a start time. At this month's 10k race, I will start about
30 minutes (that's right) after the first starter.

After each race, awards are given to the top 15 run finishers (members
only), top 3 race walkers, and the fast male and female (open to all
runners). Throughout the year, members score points, based on their
finish, in the handicap and scratch categories, towards season long
awards.

The TS is a great training tool, as well as a lot of fun. Instead of
starting in a large pack, you start with a few people, or alone. This
teaches you to pace yourself properly. The crowded finishes teach you
to finish strong.

The TS races take place once a month, all 12 months of the year. The
distances range from 2mi to 10mi. The races are free for RMRR members,
and only $5 for non-members. RMRR membership has other benefits
including discounts at running stores and race entries, free track
workouts, and magazine subscriptions.

This Sunday's race is a 10k, at Twin Lakes Park, in Adams County. Twin
Lakes Park is at 70th & Broadway, near the junction of I-25, I-76, and
US36.

This Thursday's run is at the Hogback/Matthews Winters. The early
group starts around 5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:15pm.

This is one of the few times we can run this route in the winter. You
can expect a little snow or ice on the north side of Morrison Slide -
coming down the hill to MS2 (see the map on the web site), for those
taking the longer route; and in the small gully just past MS2, for
everyone. Otherwise, it should be dry and ice free.
