In this week's message:
+ Thursday run: Apex Park
+ Other weekly runs: Tue & Wed mornings, Sat ERC
+ DTR Road Trip - 10/8, Silent Trails race, Laramie
+ Carpool offers/requests
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events.

This Thursday's run is at Apex Park (T4, P3, N2, bMms). The main group
will start at 6:15pm. The early group usually starts around 5:30pm.
We'll do the Figure 8 route.

In case of rain and muddy trails, we will run at Bear Creek Lake Park instead.

If you are new to this trail, or to DTR, please follow the link below
to maps, route descriptions, driving directions, and other information.

Tue morning runs continue at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4) on
Tuesday mornings, 5:15am. You should bring a hand or head light for
the start of the run. Please see the message posted on Mondays, or
contact Ray: r2grundmeyer@...

Wed mornings, run stairs at Red Rocks. This is a "show-and-go"
workout, meaning that just start whenever you show up. People have
been starting anywhere from 5:30-6:30am. Is anyone showing up or
should I drop this listing?

The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds free runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html

Schedule:
9/10: Bergen Peak and Elk Meadow races (see below)
9/17: Evergreen Mtn from upper Alderfer lot
9/24: O'Fallon Park
10/1: Chief Hosa

I'd like to see if we can get enough people interested in taking a
road trip to the Silent Trails race, 10/8; in Laramie, WY.

The race is a memorial to 7 members of the Univ. of Wyoming
cross-country team, who were killed by a drunk driver, while driving
back from Colorado, in 2001. The race is 10mi, of single-track trail,
in the Happy Jack Recreation Area, of the medicine Bow National
Forest, just outside of Laramie. Details at
http://www.uwyo.edu/silenttrails

If we can get enough interest, it can be a lot of fun going to a race
as a group. Laramie is less than 2 hours from Denver, no farther than
going to Vail.

Let me know if you're interested.

++++++++++

Save gas. Save money. It's more fun to go with a group. Send me a note
if interested in carpooling to any upcoming events. I'll try to help
you find a driving partner. Please send me the information by the
weekend prior to the event.

Talon is looking to carpool to the Goblin Valley 50k race (see below):
"I would like to know if anyone is planning or interested in going to
this event. I plan on going and would love to carpool. If someone
would like to share a room, that would be cool too. I plan on going
down Friday and coming back Sunday." runtalon@...

+ Wed Time Trial - Green Mtn.
+ Thursday run: Lair o' the Bear. Picnic after the run
+ Other weekly runs: Tue & Wed mornings, Sat ERC
+ DTR Road Trip - 10/8, Silent Trails race, Laramie
+ Carpool offers/requests
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events. NEW EVENTS ADDED.

This Wed, 8/31, we will have a time trial at Green Mtn. Holding it on a
Wed allows us to to have a time trial while still having a more social
run on Thursday.

The time trial will start at Green Mtn, Rooney Rd lot, at 6:15pm. The
course is ~5km, from the Rooney Rd lot (actually from across the foot
bridge) to the Florida dirt lot, on the SE side of the mountain. The
course is on moderately rolling terrain, with pretty good footing. It's
a much easier course than Falcon. Although it's 2/3 mi longer, the times
are about 25% faster. After the time trial, we will do a casual, group
run back, either the same way, or one of the several ways over the top.

Use the link below for maps, directions, and more info on DTR.
http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/

++++++++++

This Thursday's run is at Lair o' the Bear Park. The main group will
start at 6:20pm; the early group starts around 5:30pm.

The picnic will start at 7:30pm at the tables by the trailhead. The days
are getting shorter, so please time your run to be back by that time.
The course is out and back - generally uphill out and downhill back. So,
if you're planning to run for an hour, for example, please turn around
at 32-35 minutes.

The picnic is potluck. Everyone is invited. It's great if you can bring
food. It's OK if you can't. There's always plenty of extra for everyone.
It's a great chance to get to know the other runners. Things to bring
include: main dishes (e.g., pasta salads, chicken, subs), sides/salads
(e.g., salads, chips, fruit, dips), desserts (e.g., cookies, cakes,
pies), and drinks (e.g., sodas, juice, beer, wine). It would be nice if
a couple of people brought some substantial dishes (July worked out
great, but we had way too many sweets in June). Plates,
forks/knives/spoons, cups and napkins will be provided.

If you are new to this trail, please follow the link above to maps,
route descriptions, driving directions, and other information about the
DenverTrailRunners.

The ERC run, this Saturday, is at Maxwell Falls. "A new trail run!!!
According to Norm, this is a 5 mile loop. From downtown Evergreen take
H73 toward Conifer for 1 mile and turn right on Brook Forest Road. The
parking lot for Maxwell Falls is 3.5 miles up Brook Forest on the
left. But the real reason to go is Norm is inviting us all over to his
house (nearby) for bagels and coffee afterwards!!!"

This Thursday's run is at South Valley Park (T=2, P=2, N=2; BMms). The
main group will start at 6:20pm; the early group starts around 5:30pm.
We will meet at the lot off of South Valley road, not the one on Deer

This is a fairly flat and easy run. To modify the route descriptions,
do 1 or 2 loops of the Grazing Elk trail. Then, if you want to do a
little more, on the way back, ~0.3 mi after crossing the road, go
right, then in another 0.2mi, go left onto the Coyote Song trail and
take that back to the start. From the Coyote Song trail, you can also
do a quick jog out on the Lyon's Back trail and do a short loop on the
Columbine and Cathy Johnson trails.

This weeks run has been scheduled for Lair of the Bear, with our
monthly picnic. However, it's been pointed out to me that many of you
won't make the run this week either because you'll still be recovering
from this weekend's big races (Pikes, Leadville), or at Potts'
"Together Forever" race,
http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1242663

The picnic is a good time for us to socialize and get to know each
other outside of just running. If we postpone the picnic a week, to
Sept 1, more people might show up. However, the days are getting
shorter, and we'll have 11 minutes less light.
8/25 - Sunset 7:42, End Civil Twilight 8:10
9/1 - Sunset 7:30, End Civil Twilight 7:59

Please let me know your preference by tomorrow.

Are you interested in having another time trail at Green Mtn? The time
trail would be next Tuesday, 8/30. The Green Mtn. course is ~5km long,
and on a rolling trail (as opposed to the all uphill Falcon). Please
let me know by Thursday either by e-mail, or at the run.

David Scolman is looking to carpool to the Pikes Peak Marathon on
Sunday. His family will be there for the finish, and to take him home,
but aren't too excited about getting up that early for the start. He
lives near Kipling and Jewell, in Lakewood. You can contact him at
(303) 987-9292.

Everyone else racing at Pikes this weekend, I'd like to have a DTR get
together at the finish/expo area. I'll be racing both days. I know
many of you, with a few more brain cells than me, are racing the
Ascent or Marathon.

If someone could suggest a good meeting place for each day, I'll post it later
in the week.

++++++++++

I know several of you are also planning to do Imogene Pass, Sept. 10.
I'd like to have a meeting place at the finish too. I'd also like to
see if anyone is interested in cooperating with shuttling cars/runners
between Telluride and Ouray, either before or after the race. Please
let me know before Labor Day weekend.

In this week's message:
+ DTR reminders
+ Thursday run: Mt. Falcon, upper lot
+ Other weekly runs: Tue & Wed mornings, Sat ERC
+ Marathon Movie Night and Training Discussion: Tue Night, REI.
+ Runners Needed for Relay Teams
+ Carpooling and get togethers at Pikes and Imogene
+ IAAF World Championships from Helsinki on Local TV Channel 59
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events. NEW EVENTS ADDED.

Just a few reminders of how DTR works. On Yahoo, DTR is a newsletter
group, not a discussion forum. Only a handful of select members are
allowed to post and approve messages. I've gotten a number of
comments, recently, from people wondering why their attempts to post
were rejected. This is done to keep the volume of messages down, which
has been repeatedly supported in surveys. If you want to send
something to the group - please keep it running related (e.g.,
carpooling, relay runners needed, upcoming clinics) - please send it
to denvertrailrunners-owner@yahoogroups.com

Also, if you want to send something to the group, please send it to me
by the weekend before. This gives me time to get it into the regular
weekly message. I try to limit the number of messages from the group,
and I don't have time to create a lot of messages, so I usually won't
send out extra messages during the week. I don't check that e-mail
account every day.

++++++++++

This Thursday's run is again at Mt. Falcon, UPPER lot (T=3, P=3, N=3;
BMms) trails. We'll try it again and hope for better weather this
week. The main group will start at 6:20pm; the early group starts
around 5:30pm. Anyone interested in riding up from the bottom, meet us
at the lower Falcon lot at 5:00-5:10pm.

Note: THIS IS A CHANGE FROM THE PRIOR SCHEDULE! This is also a new
location for us. Please use the links below for maps and more details
on the park.

The weather forecasts look good for now, but you never know in
Colorado. In case of bad weather and muddy trails, we will run at Bear
Creek Lake Park instead.

Directions: Take HWY 285 SW from C-470, ~4.5mi, to the second exit.
Exit and go right, N onto Parmalee Gulch Rd. About 3mi up the road,
before the top, look for signs to Mt. Falcon. Turn right, and follow
the signs to Mt. Falcon. Go through past the horse lot and park in the
second lot.

Route: Start down the Castle Trail. Just a short way down, take the
first right onto Parmalee Trail. We'll stay together until there. The
trail drops steeply for a bit, the loops around overlooking hwy 285.
The trail continues for 2mi to "KEY" junction with Meadow, Tower and
Old Ute trails, where the routes will split.

Slow: From the KEY junction, take the Meadow trail in either
direction, left or straight, to the Castle Trail. Go left on the
Castle Trail to the finish.

Intermediate: From the KEY junction, go right onto Old Ute towards
Devils Elbow. The trails split and come back together twice. Stay
right in both directions. Return to the KEY junction. Take Meadow
either way, to Castle, the left to the finish.

Fast: Follow the intermediate route around Devils Elbow, and back to
the KEY junction. Start up Meadow, then bear left onto the Tower
trail. Follow it over the ridge, and back to the Meadow trail. There,
take a sharp right, downhill, and return back to the key junction. Go
left onto the Meadow Trail to Castle, then left to the finish.
Alternatively, after finishing the Devil's loop, we can reverse the
Parmalee trail back to the start.

If you are new to the group or unfamiliar with the run locations and
rating, please go to dtr.runuphillracing.com for driving directions,
running routes, trail ratings, or other information about the group.
Paper maps should be available at the start. Please read and bring a
printout the route descriptions.

Relay races are a lot of fun. You spend 24 hours or so, running and
driving through the mountains, with other tired runners. You can be
seriously competitive; you can be casual; you can have both on the
same team. There are a couple of good events in Colorado:

8/19-20; Wild West Relay; Ft. Collins to Steamboat Springs; 195 miles;
directed by a sometime DTR member Paul Vanderheiden. Teams of 12 with
each person running three separate 5-6 mile legs. Ultra teams of 6
with each person running a single 30-35 mi leg. This is held on the
full moon. www.wildwestrelay.com, wwr@...

9/16-17; Colorado Outward Bound Relay; Idaho Springs to Glenwood
Springs; 170 miles. 10 and 5 person teams. www.coloradorelay.com

Interested in forming a team with other DenverTrailRunners for an
upcoming relay? Do you already have a team that is looking for
additional runners? If interested in forming a team, please send me a
note. We'll need someone to volunteer to "lead" the teams. That means
being the contact person and organizing the other runners and drivers.
You can use the DTR message to help recruit team members. I am not
able to do the relays this year, although I have done the Colorado
Relay before.

++++++++++

Are doing Pikes or Imogene. Interested in carpooling to the race, or
from Telluride to Ouray at Imogene; sharing a room; or getting
together after the races? If you're doing any of these races, send me
a message. Let me know which race you are doing, if you are interested
in sharing a ride/room, and ideas to meet after the races. Send it to

Thursday's forecast calls for a liklihood of rain. DTR tries to avoid running on
muddy trails; it leaves ruts and speeds erosion.

If it is raining, more than just a light drizzle, we will run at Red Rocks
instead; meet at the Trading Post lot. Please use your judgement. If unsure, you
can call me, in the late afternoon, at 303-870-0487.

team. See race details below. If interested, or for questions, contact
Jess LaVigne, jsobo5@....

Relay races are a lot of fun. You spend 24 hours or so, running and
driving through the mountains, with other tired runners. You can be
seriously competitive; you can be casual; you can have both on the
same team. There are a couple of good events in Colorado:

8/19-20; Wild West Relay; Ft. Collins to Steamboat Springs; 195 miles;
directed by a sometime DTR member Paul Vanderheiden.

+ Thursday run: Deer Creek - pot luck picnic
+ Other weekly runs: Tue & Wed mornings, Sat ERC
+ Race Volunteers needed
+ Relay Runners Needed
+ Identify this runner
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events. NEW EVENTS ADDED.

This Thursday is a run and picnic at Deer Creek (T=3, P=4, N=2; BMms) trails.
The main group will start at 6:20pm; the early group meets at 5:30pm. If you
arrive late, just start and do a shorter route. Please finish around 7:50 for
the picnic.

We will go in a counter-clockwise direction, different than last time. Slower
runners should just do the Plymouth Mtn loop; either take the 2nd left above the
wall, or continue 1/4 mi up and take the next left (it comes in from behind)
onto the Homestead trail. Intermediate and faster runners should do the Red Mesa
loop first. Intermediate runners should either head down from there, or take the
Homestead trail cross,
then the next left back down to the main trail. Faster runners should take
Homestead, then continue around Plymouth Mtn.

After the run, join us for a potluck picnic at the park. Please bring food or
drink to share with others - fruit, salads - green or pasta, desserts,
beer/wine/soda, etc. Last time we had a lot of sweets. It would be nice if a
couple of people brought main dishes. We had a lot of sweets last time. Plates,
cups, utensils, and napkins will be provided.

If you are new to the group or unfamiliar with the run locations and
rating, please go to http://dtr.runuphillracing.com for driving directions,
running routes, trail ratings, or other information about the group. Please read
and bring a printout of the maps and route descriptions.

Tentative Schedule:
8/4: North Table. Does anyone know how Friday's fire affected the
trail?
8/9 (Tue): Green Mtn time trial
8/11: Genesee/Beaver Brook
8/18: Hogback/Mathews Winters
8/25: Lair 'o the Bear, picnic
9/1: South Valley

++++++++++

Tue morning runs continue at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4) on Tuesday
mornings, 5:15am. Please see the message posted on Mondays, or contact Leigh:

Wed mornings, run stairs at Red Rocks. This is a "show-and-go" workout, meaning
that just start whenever you show up. People have been starting anywhere from
5:30-6:30am. Is anyone showing up or should I drop this listing?

Wed mornings, every other week, join Derek Griffith for a long run near Ken
Caryl. He starts at his house, 28 Tecoma Circle, at 6:30am, and runs for up to 2
hours, 12-15 miles. Contact Derek for more information,

+ Other weekly runs: Tue & Wed mornings, Sat ERC
+ Saturday long run: Burning Bear and South Park Trail
+ Relay Runners Needed
+ Race Volunteers needed
+ Carpooling to runs/races
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events

This Thursday's run is at Mt. Falcon (T=3, P=5, N=2; BMms) trails. The
main group will start at 6:15pm; the early group meets at 5:30pm.
After the run, everyone is invited to come to dinner with us. We pick
a nearby location at the end of the run.

I know that it's hot. I plan (not guaranteed) to stash some water at
the top of the time trial course.

The time trial is 2.5mi, uphill, 1,500' vertical. We handicap the
starts for the time trial. Slower runners start first; everyone
finishes at about the same time. Then, at the top, we do a slow, group
run together before returning to the bottom. If you ran the time trial
in May, I will have a start time for you. You can use a time from past
years. Or, you can estimate your time from a recent 10k. Use the link
below for more info.

If you are new to the group or unfamiliar with the run locations and
rating, please go to http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/ for driving
directions, running routes, trail ratings, or other information about the group.
Please read and bring a printout of the maps and route descriptions.

Tue morning run at South Table Mtn

Date: Tuesday, July 19, 2005
Time: 5:15AM MDT (GMT-06:00)

Join Leigh, Ray and David for a Tue morning run, at South Table
Mtn at 5:15am. Look for Leigh in a yellow Xterra, often driven
by a standard poodle, or Ray in a red pick-up (driven by
himself).

This is an easy paced run and the group usually stays together.

Please contact Leigh for more info on the Tue morning run:

+ DTR tops 1000
+ Carpools
+ Relay runners needed
+ Group run next Saturday
+ Input needed for running article

The DTR group has topped 1,000 members! I'm wondering where all of you
are? We have a long way to go before the runs become too big. I'd like
to see more new people at our runs. There really are runners of all
abilities. Tonight's run, at Lookout Mtn, is a great run if you are
unfamiliar with the trails. The route is easy to follow. The run is an
out-and-back, so you can turn around whenever you want. Note that the
out is up a challenging hill.

Clark Fox is interested in carpooling to the Kendall Mountain Run,
this Saturday, in Silverton. He plans to leave on Friday, and return
on Sunday. cfox@...

Paul Welschinger is interested in carpooling to the Barr Trail race,
in Manitou Springs, this Sunday. Paul.Welschinger@...

Mike Robberts is interested in carpooling to any of the Summit Trail
Series races, around Breckenridge, on Wed evenings. Upcoming races are
7/20, 8/10 and 8/24. He usually meets from the park-and-ride lots, at
I-70, in Golden, around 3:30pm. mike_kasey@...

Team Freakin Idiots needs additional runners for their Wild West Relay
team, Aug 19-20. See race details below. If interested, or for
questions, contact Jess LaVigne, jsobo5@....

Matt Kennedy needs 2 female and 1 male for his Hood to Coast relay
team, Aug 26-27. Expenses would be airfare to Portland, food, and
share of group expenses. More information can be found at
www.hoodtocoast.com. Contact Matt at matthew.kennedy@....

Relay races are a lot of fun. You spend 24 hours or so, running and
driving through the mountains, with other tired runners. You can be
seriously competitive; you can be casual; you can have both on the
same team. There are a couple of good events in Colorado:

8/19-20; Wild West Relay; Ft. Collins to Steamboat Springs; 195 miles;
directed by a sometime DTR member Paul Vanderheiden.

Next Saturday, July 23, we will do a run in the mountains. The run
will be on the Burning Bear and South Park Trails. The start/finish is
at Bruno Gulch, about midway between Guanella Pass and highway 285, at
Grant. There will be various options from 6-20 miles. Elevations range
from 9,500' - 11,750', on the longer route. There's some great scenery
and views, and very few people. More details will be posted in next
week's message. The routes will be on my web site this weekend. We
could use someone to crew mid-run. This person could also run part of
the course.

Kyle Boelte is looking for input on an article.

"I'm writing an article for an national running magazine about
alternatives to commercial energy bars and gels. I'd love to talk to a
few of you who have had good experiences with homemade bars/gels (or
foods you didn't have to create like bananas and other fruits). I'd
love to get a couple good stories, too, something that really
illustrates the subject--like the time you were running the Hardrock
or the Pikes Peak Marathon and....

We can do this by email and it will only take a few minutes. Please
reply off the list."

+ Thursday run: White Ranch
+ Other weekly runs: Tue & Wed mornings, Sat ERC
+ Trail Running talk and slide show, Wed, Runners Roost, Lakewood
+ Race Volunteers needed
+ Carpooling to runs/races
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events

This Thursday's run is at White Ranch (T=3, P=4, N=2, bMms), lower,
east lot. The main group will start at 6:15pm; the early group meets at 5:30pm.
After the run, everyone is invited to come to dinner with us. We pick a nearby
location at the end of the run.

There is no map on my web site. Please use the link
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/white.htm for
maps. Look at both the Park Map, and the Current Trail Work maps.
Please regroup at key intersections. This is one of our longer runs,
1:20-1:30. Please bring a watch and judge your time to finish around
7:45pm.

Directions: Take hwy 93 north from Golden. Don't turn at Golden Gate
Canyon, even though there are signs for White Ranch there. Continue
about 2 miles past to 56th. There are more White Ranch signs there.
Turn left for 1 mile, then right into the lot.

There's one trail from the lot. Go through the gate, down the hill,
cross the road, then through the other gate. It's fairly flat to the
stairs and across the dry creek. We'll stay together until here. Then
it starts to climb. ~0.5 mile up, near the first hairpin left turn, go right
onto the new trail connection to Longhorn. Go right at Longhorn. Then,
…

Short: At the next junction, go left onto Shorthorn. Follow it back
down to Belcher Hill, then back to the bottom.

Intermediate: Stay right at Shorthorn, and continue up Longhorn to the
next junction. Go left onto Maverick. It's about 1 mi across to Belcher Hill.
There, go left and follow the main Belcher Hill trail to the bottom.

Long: Continue up Longhorn past Maverick. ~0.25 mile up, stay left at the next
fork. Continue past the picnic tables and bathroom to the upper lot.
Across the lot, head down the Sawmill trail. It merges with Belcher
Hill, which takes you back to the bottom.

Extra long: Depending on time, from the upper lot, go up the dirt road
for ~0.3 mi to the next trail junction. Go left up the trail to the top of the
ridge. Then, go left on Belcher Hill, across the ridge, then continue down the
hill.

If you are new to the group or unfamiliar with the run locations and
rating, please go to dtr.runuphillracing.com for driving directions,
running routes, trail ratings, or other information about the group.
Please read and bring a printout of the maps and route descriptions.

mornings, 5:15am. Please see the message posted on Mondays, or contact Ray:
r2grundmeyer@....

Wed mornings, run stairs at Red Rocks. This is a "show-and-go" workout, meaning
that just start whenever you show up. People have been starting anywhere from
5:30-6:30am.

Wed mornings, every other week, join Derek Griffiths for a long run near Ken
Caryl. He starts at his house, 28 Tecoma Circle, at 6:30am, and runs for up to 2
hours, 12-15 miles. Contact Derek for more information,
derek@...

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at the Evergreen
Lake House. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html

Come to a slide show and talk about Trail Running Adventures, this Wed evening,
with Buzz Burrell and Brian Metzler. Buzz has some great pictures and stories
from his running adventures around the world, including his speed records for
the Colorado and John Muir Trails. He always puts on an entertaining show. Buzz
is the manager of the Sportiva/GoLite racing team. Brian is the founding editor
of TrailRunning and AdventureSports magazines.

The talk is this Wed., 6/29, 7:00pm, at the new Runners Roost store in
Lakewood (owned by a friend, Sonya Estes); SW corner of Alameda &
Wadsworth, 303-991-1851.

I will be there too to answer questions about DTR and trail running.

++++++++++

Interested in forming a DenverTrailRunners team for an upcoming relay?
Do you already have a team that is looking for additional runners?
Relay races are a lot of fun. You can be seriously competitive; you can be
casual; you can have both on the same team. You spend 24 hours or so, running
and riding through the mountains, with other tired runners. There are a couple
of good events in Colorado:

8/19-20; Wild West Relay; Ft. Collins to Steamboat Springs; 195 miles;
directed by a sometime DTR member Paul Vanderheiden. Teams of 12 with
each person running three separate 5-6 mile legs. Ultra teams of 6 with each
person running a single 30-35 mi leg. This is held on the full moon.
www.wildwestrelay.com, wwr@...

9/16-17; Colorado Outward Bound Relay; Idaho Springs to Glenwood
Springs; 170 miles. 10 and 5 person teams. www.coloradorelay.com

If interested in forming a DTR team, please send me a note. We'll need
someone to volunteer to "lead" the teams. That means being the contact
person and organizing the other runners and drivers. You can use the
DTR message to help recruit team members. I am not able to do the
relays. I have done the Colorado Relay before.

Thank you to everyone who helped me at my races last week. I will need
help at my upcoming Twilight Trail Series races on 7/13, 7/27 and 8/3.
Contact me at info@..., 303-870-0487. Race info and
directions at www.runuphillracing.com.

Also, Darrin Eisman needs volunteers for his Scar Top race on July 4.
See details below. Please tell Darrin that I sent you.

++++++++++

Save gas. Save money. It's more fun to go with a group. Send me a note
if interested in carpooling to any upcoming events. I'll try to help
you find a driving partner. info@...

This Thursday will be a run and picnic at Deer Creek Canyon Park (T=3,
P=4, N=2). The main group will start at 6:25pm; the early group meets
at 5:30pm.

This is a longer run, ~1:30. If you start late, plan to be back at the
picnic shelter by 8pm. The route description online can be a little
confusing. The map will make it clearer. Paper maps are usually
available at the trailhead. Slower runners should do the Plymouth Mtn
loop; add the Homestead trail if you want a little extra; regroup at
the start of Plymouth Mtn. Intermediate runners should do the Red Mesa
loop; add the Homestead trail if you want a little extra; regroup at
the start and end of Red Mesa. Faster runners will do the Red Mesa loop
first, then Plymouth Mtn, via the Homestead trail; regroup at the start
and end of Red Mesa.

The potluck picnic will start at the end of the run, ~8pm. Everyone is
invited, even if you can't make the run or can't bring food. There is
always plenty of extra food. This is a great chance to get to know some
of the other runners. For the potluck, bring chips, appetizers, green,
fruit and pasta salads, cookies, pies, sodas, beer. Connie will bring
plates, forks, cups, napkins, etc. If you picked up anything at the
last picnic, please bring it this Thursday.

Tue morning runs continue at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4) on Tuesday
mornings, 5:15am. Please see the message posted on Mondays, or contact

I desperately need volunteers for the Twilight Trail Series race this
Wednesday evening, and the Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run this Sunday
morning.

The Twilight Trail Series race is this Wed evening. The 6.5mi race
starts at 6:40pm. I need about 6 people to help out with registration,
timing, water stations, and course marshals. I'd like you there by
6:00pm. There is the upper, west lot; about 20 minutes from Golden.
One or two people with a mountain bike would help.

The Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run is Sunday morning. The 12mi race

La Sportiva and Golite present the Twilight Trail Series and Golden
Gate Canyon Trail Run. Early registration ends this weekend. I also
need volunteers for these races.

The Twilight Trail Series is four Wed evening trail races over the
summer. The first race is this Wed, 6/22, 6.5mi, at White Ranch, from
the upper, West lot. It starts at 6:40pm. The course is a rolling mix
of smooth dirt and single track. There are a couple of steep,
technical descents, and one steep, ~1/2 mi climb. Mark Werner won this
race, in 2003, in 44:10; Bronwyn Morrissey was the first woman in 57:18

The other Twilight Series races are:
7/13, 10km, Elk Meadow Open Space Park, Evergreen.
7/27, 7.5mi, South Valley Open Space Park, Littleton
8/3, 6.9mi, White Ranch, upper lot, different course than 6/22.

There are discounts for HS students, and for 3 and 4 race
packages. Package discounts in advance only.

The 3rd annual Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run, 12 miles, is Sunday,
6/26, at 8:30am. The race is at Golden Gate Canyon State Park, ~10 mi
S of Nederland, 15 mi W of Golden.

It's a beautiful course with a mix of single track, jeep, and dirt
roads. Some of the single track is steep and technical. It is held at
8,500'-9,500', with ~2,000' of climbing. This includes a 600' climb,
in 3/4mi, with a rock scramble at the top, after ~7.5mi. You run
through some beautiful forests and meadows, and have some great views
of the Indian Peaks and Continental Divide. Bill Raitter won last year
in 1:24:54; Karen Voss was the first woman in 1:49:46.

There are great prizes from La Sportiva and GoLite (thanks to Buzz),
Redfeather Snowshoes, Running Delights, Honey Stinger, Golden City
Brewery, gift certificates from Runners Roost, Boulder Running Company
and Two Feet to Go, and food from Vitamin Cottage.

More information (maps, directions, etc.), printable applications, and
links to online registration, for all races, are available at

Hello,

My name is Krissy Falk, and I am a graduate student in the Locomotion Laboratory
at CU, as well as a trail runner. I am currently looking for subjects who would
like to participate in a study on stride frequency in uphill and downhill
running and its effect on biomechanics and metabolic cost. Participation is
completely voluntary. In order to participate, you must be 18-35 years old,
injury-free, have had no previous heart trouble (There is a short questionnaire
related to cardiac health and injury, which I can do over the phone or by
e-mail) and run at least 30 miles a week, preferably hill running.

The study consists of three or four sessions: an orientation(<1 hour), one
session on the level, and one at three degrees (5.2%) uphill, and possibly one
at three degrees (5.2%) downhill, each of which will take less than 2 hours,
probably closer to 1.5. Ideally, I would like to have subjects do all four
sessions, but due to the time commitment, I would understand if it were only
possible to do the first three. Sessions would be scheduled at your convenience.

If you participate, I will be able to tell you if the stride frequency you
choose naturally is actually the most metabolically efficient stride frequency
for you, on the level, and for however many slopes you choose to do.
Additionally, I will be able to tell you if, should your preferred stride
frequency differ from your metabolically optimal one, you should quicken or slow
down your stride frequency to become more efficient. Orientations will start
later this week.

If you are interested in participating in this study, please call me at (303)
492-0926 or e-mail me anytime at Kristine.Falk@... and we can get
through the questionnaire and schedule a time for orientation. Feel free to pass
this e-mail on to anyone else who might be interested. Thanks much and enjoy the
trails!

We would like to remind you of this upcoming event.

Wed morning stair workout at Red Rocks

Date: Wednesday, June 15, 2005
Time: 6:00AM MDT (GMT-06:00)

Watch the sun rise while you do a stair workout at Red Rocks.

This is a "show-and-go" workout, meaning just start whenever you
show up. People have been starting anywhere from 5:30-6:30am.
You stay in the ampitheatre, so it's easy to go at your own
pace.

We often start on the bleachers. The goal is to make it as high
as you can on just one stride per level. The highest I've made
it is 50. There are 67 levels. After that I have to take a 2nd
step at each level to the top, alternating legs every few
levels. This workout will build hip strength and show you how
tight your hips are.

After a few times up the bleachers, we'll go to the steps on the
N side of the bleachers. Or, you can just skip the bleachers and
go right to the stairs. Start at the bottom, at the road, and go
to the top of the ampitheatre. If there's ice on the lower half,
we'll start at the stage level. The upper half gets sun and is
usually clear.

If you started with the bleachers, go with just one stair per
stride. Keep your stride short and quick. This will get you up
on your toes (especally good practice for heal strikers) and
improve your leg speed. For more of a strength workout, you can
mix it up by sometimes taking 2 or 3 stairs per stride.

Park by the Trading Post, or park at the TNT Country Kitchen, in
Morrison, and warm-up by running up to the ampitheatre. From
TNT, head up the canyon. Turn right about 200 yards past the
elementary school and traffic light. Go either way at the
junction ~1/4 mi up, and follow the signs to the ampitheatre.
After running back to TNT, start of your morning healthy with
one of their decadent cinnamon rolls. :)

information about the group, please go to dtr.runuphillracing.com. If
you are unfamiliar with this week's runs, please read and bring a
printout of the maps and descriptions.

This Tuesday evening will be a time trial at Green Mtn. Meet at the
Rooney Road lot at 6:15. The early group may start at 5:30pm.

The time trial is 5km of moderately rolling terrain. You should be
able to do this within about 25% of your 5km road time. We will start
just across the bridge from the lot, and finish at the Florida lot
(FLA on the map). I will come up with a staggered start system so that
everyone finishes at about the same time. After the time trial, we
will do a slow, group run together back to Rooney lot.

++++++++++

This week's Thursday night run will be at North Table Mtn. (T=3, P=3,
N=2). The main group will start at 6:15pm; the early group meets at
5:30pm.

If you are new to this trail, please read and bring a copy of the map
and route description. Slower runners should do an out and back and
not attempt the loop unless you start early.

Tentative schedule:
6/23: Deer Creek, picnic
