+ Thursday night run: Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2, N=3)**
+ Saturday Evergreen Runners Circle run: Chief Hosa (T=1, P=2, N=2)**
+ Tuesday morning runs: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Carpool to Screamin' Snowman snowshoe race

This Thursday evening's run is at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2,
N=3)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An early group usually
starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim. We will run
here rain or shine.

If this is your first time on the trail, please print out the route
description (below) and map (if available).

Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west. Take the first right at
Rooney Rd, then an immediate right into the dirt lot, across from the
Conoco Station. To avoid C470 traffic from the north, stay on I70 to
the Red Rocks exit, #259. Go south ~1mi. Take the first left and go
over the hogback. Just after crossing over C-470, turn right onto
Rooney Rd and go ~2mi. There's a bathroom in the Conoco station, and
several in the park.

Main Route Trail Route (in blue on attached): The run starts on the
bike path across Morrison Rd. Run under C-470. Jog right across the
first bridge, then an immediate left onto a single track. Run through
the picnic area [1], cross the road, and pick up the trail on the other
side. Continue following the path east along the south side of Bear
Creek, around the horse fences and past the exercise stations. About
1.75mi from the start, the path curves right, loops back to the left,
then leads to a large, dirt, parking lot. Cross the lot, staying to the
right side. Head between the large rocks on the other side of the lot,
then down the hill to the creek.* The creek is easy to cross on rocks
[2]. Go left on the trails and head to the road at the base of the
mountain [3]. Go left on the road and follow it across the base of the
dam. At the north end of the dam,* go left on the single track and
follow it back west along the edge of the lake. Cross through the
fisherman's parking lot [5]. Just after the trees on the other side, go
left onto the dirt path. Follow this back west, along the north side of
Bear Creek. At the end of the trail, come up to the road, continue west
past the tollbooth, onto the bike path, then back under C-470 to the
finish.

You can also take the park road back. At the north end of the dam, go
past the single track and around the chain to the road. Go left and
take it all the way back. Or, at the fisherman's lot [5], go right out
to the road (brown line), then left to the finish.

Advanced trail options (in red): At the picnic area [1], look for
trails across the road to the right. Climb up the small plateau, then
look for a trail on the left. Head around the horse fence and rejoin
the main trail. At the base of Mt Carbon [3]*, climb the trail up the
face. At the top, stay left and follow the trail along the north face.
Before the dam, look for a short trail heading steeply down on the
left. At the dam [4], take a sharp left, then right on the road at the
base of the dam; or, take the road across the top of the dam, then left
down the road at the north end. The advanced trails from Fisherman's
Wharf [5] have changed.

Road route: Start under C-470 as above, but skip the first bridge.
Continue straight onto the park road, and through the tollbooth. Stay
left on the road (brown line) just past the tollbooth. About 2mi from
the start, the road takes a sharp left, climbs up a steep hill, then
curves right to the base of the dam*. Short and intermediate runners
should turn around after ~30 minutes. To add a little more distance, go
left at the base of the dam and climb to the top. Continue down the
back side to the golf course, or go right, across the top of the dam,
before turning around. Faster runners should go right at the base of
the dam*. Take the road across the base of the dam. Continue south to
the bike path (dark blue line). Go right and take the bike path all the
way to the finish.

* Regrouping points. Please wait here to help guide new runners.

will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

We would like to remind you of this upcoming event.

Tue morning run at South Table Mtn

Date: Tuesday, February 1, 2005
Time: 5:15AM MST (GMT-07:00)

Join Leigh and Ray for a Tue morning run, at South Table Mtn at
5:15am. Look for Leigh in a yellow Xterra, often driven by a
standard poodle, or Ray in a red pick-up, driven by himself.

This is an easy paced run. It will continue every week as long
as people show up. Please contact Leigh if you plan to show up,
and for more info on the Tue morning run: inclinerunner@...

Directions: Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver
West Blvd. Go north to the first street. Turn left. Go 2 blocks
to the NREL lot.

From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax. Turn right
and continue past the shopping center on the left. Turn left at
Denver West Marriott Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the
directions above. There are no bathrooms or changing facilities
at this site.

Route: You'll probably stay together. Leigh knows the way. Just
in case...

Head up the single track from the lot. About 100 yards up, make
a left at the fork. Follow the trail to the top, then continue
to the north side of the plateau, staying outside of the paved
CDOT test track. At the north end, go left, west, on the old
jeep road. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! You've gone <
1-mile so far.

Follow the jeep trail to the west. At no time should you cross
the paved CDOT test track. If you get there by mistake, head
north until
you find the trail. You will pass by an E-W fence line, cross a
N-S fence line, then look for a small abandoned building on the
right. A short distance later, the trail splits. Go either way
around the small hill. The trails merge on the other side,
~1/4mi. Continue west until it meets a larger jeep road. Bear
right and head west towards the power lines. In the dark, look
for the large "M" on Lookout Mtn. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY
BACK! Depending on time, continue past the power lines, down the
hill to the far western edge of the plateau, then up the "Golden
Stairs," a rock perch overlooking the town of Golden. Return the
same way.

+ Thursday night run: Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=3, P=3, N=2)**
+ Saturday Evergreen Runners Circle run: O'Fallon Park (T=2, P=3, N=4)**
+ Tuesday morning runs: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Carpool to Winter Park race

I'm sorry for any confusion about last week's run location. Just after
I sent out the weekly message, I got a reliable report that South
Valley Park was too muddy to run. It was very muddy the last time we
ran there. We try to avoid running on muddy trails because it damages
the trails. I sent the change message out as soon as I could.

++++++++++

This Thursday evening's run is at Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=3, P=3,
N=2)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An early group usually
starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim. We will run
here rain or shine.

Directions: Meet at the dirt turnout, at the first hairpin turn, just
above the pillars. Take hwy 6 to Golden. Turn west at Lookout Mtn/19th
ave. The turnout is about 3/4-mile up, just above the pillars. From
Boulder, take hwy 93 south, and continue south on hwy 6. From the east
on I70, take hwy 58 west, through Golden, to hwy 6; turn left at hwy
6, up the hill, to Lookout. From the south, take C470 to the end; just
past I70, it will let you off onto hwy 6. Take hwy 6 west for about
1.5mi to Lookout. There's a porta-potty in the small park on the left,
below the pillars.

Run description: The main route is out and back (with some additional
options for faster runners). Please keep your run to about 1:00-1:10.
In other words, you should turn around in ~35+ minutes.

There are both road and trail options. The road may be a good choice
for those without good lights. The hill gives a good workout and
traffic is pretty light. We will stay on the road if the trail is
muddy. Note: The road is longer than the trails, both in time and
distance. Please judge your time accordingly.

Road Route: Run up and back along Lookout Mtn Road. It's ~4.5mi and
1,500' to the park. Or, turn around at ~35+ minutes.

Trail Route: Start up the road ~1/2-mi. Go left onto the trail at the
small dirt turnout. Head up the trail for another ~1.5 mi to Windy
Saddle.* If you have lights, cross the road, jog left, then pick up
the Beaver Brook trail on the other side. If you don't have lights, go
left and head up the road until you've been out ~30-35 minutes, then
return on the road. The road, from Windy Saddle to the bottom, takes
several minutes longer than the trail.

Continuing on the trail, in another 1/4-mi, at the next trail
junction, make a sharp left. Climb another mile, first through a
series of switchbacks, then a straight section, to the next junction.
Intermediate runners should stay left and continue to a park* in
another ¼ mi. Return either back on the trail, or go left on the road
and take it down.

Faster runners should take a sharp right at the last junction and
continue another ~1/3-mi to the Boettcher Mansion.*

There are several options for faster runners from there:

1) Go left on the road at the mansion, for ~3/4 mi down the hill. Go
left again at Lookout Mtn Rd, then look for a park on the left. Enter
the park and look for a trail on the far left. This will merge back
with the trail we took up at the last junction before the mansion.
Stay right, and continue down the same way you came up. 2) For an even
longer route, go right and follow the trail (or road) along the west
side of the mansion, outside the fence for ~1mi. Go left at Lookout
Mtn Rd for another 1.1 mile to the park. Then, either go left and look
for the trail in the park, or continue down the road.

*Regrouping places:
+ At the Windy Saddle road crossing, both ways;
+ At the park, if you continue up the trail.
+ At Boettcher Mansion, for the faster runners.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at O'Fallon Park
(T=2, P=3, N=4)**. The run starts promptly at 8:30am.
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/alderfer.htm

Take C-470 to the Morrison exit, hwy 74. Go west, through Morrison,
and continue about 6mi to the park. The park entrance is on the left,
just before the town of Kittredge.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

House, 16 miles. Check w/Dave
2/26: Genesee overlook. Mt. Vernon trails

Tuesday is the full moon. Come celebrate with a run and/or mtn bike at
South Table Mtn.

South Table is a great place to watch the moon rise over the eastern
plains. It is also a great spot for night training. It's a fairly short
and mild climb to the top. The top is mostly flat and with fairly easy
technical terrain for riders, even at night. It's not well marked, so
please pay attention to the attached map and route descriptions below.

There will be two starts - 5:30pm and 6:30pm. You can run or ride at
either time. I plan to ride at 5:30 for an hour, then be back in time
to run at 6:30.

Afterwards, join us for dinner at Qdoba, at the nearby Denver West
shopping center. Qdoba is donating a portion of all sales to tsunami
relief on Tuesday.

Directions: We will start from the NREL visitors lot. Take I-70 to
Denver West Blvd. Go north to the first street. Turn left. Go 2 blocks
to the NREL lot. From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax.
Turn right and continue past the shopping center on the left. Turn left
at Denver West Marriott Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the directions
above. There are no bathrooms or changing facilities at this site. You
can try the nearby Denver West Shopping Center or Marriott Hotel.

See the attached map for routes.

Bike Route: Start north, up the trail from the parking lot. The most
technical part of the ride is about 1/4 mi up, just before the trail
takes a sharp left. Continue following it up to the top. At the top,
continue in a northerly direction. You'll cross a couple of small
trails, then come alongside a fence with lots of reflectors. There's a
paved, CDOT test track on the other side. We need to stay outside of
this area at all times. This will lead to a larger, jeep trail
(abandoned) at the north end of the mountain. Remember this turn for
the way back. We'll regroup here.

Follow the jeep trail to the west. You will pass by an E-W fence line,
cross a N-S fence line, then look for a small abandoned building on the
right. A short distance later, the trail starts up a small hill, then
splits. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! Go right (we will return
from the other direction) and follow the trail around the small hill.
Look for a trail going right on the back side of the hill (purple).
Take this trail across a small gully, then go right (north) when it
merges with a jeep trail. Follow the trail out to the northern edge.
The trail curves west, and then south (green line) until you reach the
jeep road. Go left, down the jeep road. As you are heading down the
hill, look for a smaller trail veering left. Take this trail back
around the small hill to the split we hit on the way out. Take a sharp
right, return along the trail to the CDOT fence line. There, go right
and follow the trail back down to the lot.

Running route: Follow the bike route to the top, west along the jeep
road, then right at the split around the small hill. Don't take the
first right around the small hill. Continue around the hill (following
the red line) until it merges with the trail coming from the left. Go
right, then right again on the wider jeep road. Head west, up the jeep
road, past a large, metal, power line tower, then down the trail.
Continue to the "Golden Stairs," a set of abandoned, concrete steps
that lead to a perch overlooking Golden. Return back along the same
route. Judge your time and consider turning around before you reach the
stairs.

Note: The lines drawn on the map are only approximate estimations of
the actual route.

Tue morning run at South Table Mtn

Date: Tuesday, January 25, 2005

Turn right

Return the
same way.

A late report of muddy conditions at South Valley. The run location is
changed to Green Mtn., Rooney Road lot (T=3, P=2-4; N=3). The run will start at
6:15pm. The early group will still meet at 5:30pm.

Directions: From Denver, take 6th ave to the end of the freeway. Turn
onto Colfax or US 40. Go about 1 mile, just under the C-470 extension,
then turn left at the light, Rooney Road. The lot is about 1.5 miles
ahead, on the left.

From the south, take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west, then take the
first right onto Rooney Road, before you enter Morrison, by the Conoco
station. Rooney road goes by Bandimere Speedway, under C-470, then
ends about 2.5 miles up at Alameda. Go left, cross over C-470, then
take the next right onto Rooney Road again. The lot is about 1/2 mile
up on the right.

Route: There are several options. Please choose the appropriate route
for your speed to finish in about 1:00-1:10. Everyone starts by taking
the pedestrian bridge over C-470.

Beginner: Take the far right dirt trail. Follow the trail around the
south side of the mountain for 30-35 minutes, then turn around and
return the same way.

Intermediate: Follow the beginner route. Continue past the first few
trail junctions. There's a junction in ~0.75mi (GM1). Go right (left
takes you back to the start; straight climbs up steeply) and continue
around the south side of the mountain. The trail takes you near the
road, next to a small lot at ~2.0mi. At ~2.5mi, there a set of jeep
tracks heading up to the left. You'll see (in the daylight) a fence on
the left, up the hill. Continue to the next junction, the Utah trail,
3.1mi (UTAH1). Go left up the trail. After 1/2 mi, take sharp left at
the next trail junction. Continue another 1mi up the the service road.
Go left on the Service road, and follow it over the top, then down to
the finish.

Advanced: Start on the intermediate route. However, don't turn up the
Utah trail. Go straight, another 1/4 mi, to the dirt lot. At the far
end of the lot, go left up the single track trail. Follow it up for
1.25 mi to the TV towers. There, go left on the service road and
follow it back to the finish.

Advanced plus: Follow the advanced route to the start of the climb
from the dirt lot. About 0.6mi up, after a 90 degree left turn, look
for a small trail on the left. Take the trail for ~1/4 mi. Take the
next right, and continue another mile up to the service road. Go left
on the Service road, and follow it over the top, then down to the finish.

N=2)**
+ Tuesday morning runs: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**
+ Tuesday evening Full Moon run and ride
+ Help for compartment syndrome
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events

This Thursday evening's run is at South Valley Park (T=2, P=2, N=2)**.
The main group will start at 6:30pm. An early group usually starts
around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.

Directions: From the north, take C470 to the Ken Caryl exit. Go west,
into the canyon. Go left at the "Y" (light). Stay left. The lot is on
your left, ~1.3mi from the "Y".

From the south, take C-470 to Kipling. Go south ~50 yards to the stop
sign and turn right onto Ute. The road curves left, goes down the
hill, then merges with Deer Creek. Go right up the canyon, past the S.
Valley lot along Deer Creek. After ~1.2mi, take the next right onto
South Valley Rd. After0.4mi up the hill, take the next right, still S.
Valley Rd. Continue north ~0.9mi to the lot on the right.

Route: This is a new location for us. It's mostly flat, not too rocky,
easy to follow, and has loops, so it's a good one for beginners. Derek
guarantees (well, almost) that it won't be muddy like last time. It's
supposed to be near 70 on Thursday.

Start south on the hiker only, Swallow trail (the one on the right)
for ~1mi. Stay right at the fork for 1/4mi. Cross the road, then
continue another 1/4mi up to the Grazing Elk trail.* This is a 2.2mi
loop. Go right and do 1-3 loops. 1 loop is 5.2mi total. 2 loops is
7.4mi total; 3 loops is 9.9. You can add some variety (and distance)
by taking the Rattlesnake Gulch trail, from the S end of Grazing Elk,
down the hill, across Deer Creek Rd, and up to the Deer Creek lot.
It's ~0.6mi ea. way.

* Regrouping points. Please regroup at the Grazing Elk trailhead, on
the way out and back with others of similar paces.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Alderfer/3
Sisters (T=3, P=3, N=2)**. The run starts promptly at 8:30am.
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/alderfer.htm

Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70. Follow hwy
74 ~7.5mi, to the main light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go
south (right if coming from I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the
first right, about 3/4 mile up, onto Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the
hill, past the high school, past the lower Alderfer lots, to the open
meadows at the top. Park in the dirt lot on the right, just past the
yellow house.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html

Schedule:
1/29: O'Fallon Park. Run to Lair o' the Bear and back
2/5: Chief Hosa
2/12: Evergreen Lake House

Leigh Singleton and Ray Grundmeyer are leading runs every Tue morning
at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4). They meet at 5:15am, and run into
the sunrise. The pace is casual. They welcome some company. Look for
Leigh in a yellow Nissan XTerra, often with a standard poodle, or Ray
in a burgundy pickup. These runs will continue every week as long as
people show up. Please contact Leigh for more info:
inclinerunner@.... It's also helpful if you let her know if you
plan to show up, though it's OK to just show up.

Directions: Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver West
Blvd. Go north to the first street. Turn left. Go 2 blocks to the NREL
lot. From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax. Turn right and
continue past the shopping center on the left. Turn left at Denver
West Marriott Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the directions above.
There are no bathrooms or changing facilities at this site.

Date: Tuesday, January 18, 2005
Time: 5:15AM MST (GMT-07:00)

Join Leigh and Ray for a Tue morning run, at South Table Mtn at
5:15am. Look for Leigh in a yellow Xterra, often driven by a

This is an easy paced run. It will continue every week as long
as people show up. Please contact Leigh if you plan to show up,
and for more info on the Tue morning run: inclinerunner@...

Directions: Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver
West Blvd. Go north to the first street. Turn left. Go 2 blocks
to the NREL lot.

From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax. Turn right
and continue past the shopping center on the left. Turn left at
Denver West Marriott Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the
directions above. There are no bathrooms or changing facilities
at this site.

Route: You'll probably stay together. Leigh knows the way. Just
in case...

Head up the single track from the lot. About 100 yards up, make
a left at the fork. Follow the trail to the top, then continue
to the north side of the plateau, staying outside of the paved
CDOT test track. At the north end, go left, west, on the old
jeep road. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! You've gone <
1-mile so far.

Follow the jeep trail to the west. At no time should you cross
the paved CDOT test track. If you get there by mistake, head
north until
you find the trail. You will pass by an E-W fence line, cross a
N-S fence line, then look for a small abandoned building on the
right. A short distance later, the trail splits. Go either way

If the weather gets warm and the trail is soft, wet and muddy, there
will be an alternate road route for the Thursday night run. We will
still meet at the Sout Table trailhead (NREL lot). I will bring maps
to the run. And, will send the alternate route instructions to Scott
and Ray in the early group.

Please don't tread on muddy trails. Footsteps (like bicycle tires)
leave ruts, and speed the erosion of the trails. Besides, they're not
a lot of fun to run on.

Sorry. The forecast was for more snow and colder temps when I sent
out the message.

+ Tue morning runs: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**

+ Help for compartment syndrome

+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events

This Thursday evening's run is at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An early group usually starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.

Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver West Blvd. Go north to the first street. Turn left. Go 2 blocks to the NREL lot. From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax. Turn right and continue past the shopping center on the left. Turn left at Denver West Marriott Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the directions above. There are no bathrooms or changing facilities at this site. You can try the nearby Denver West Shopping Center or Marriott Hotel.

This is a fairly easy run - it's a short trip to the top of the mountain and the top is fairly flat, although it can be rocky in spots. However, finding the route can be difficult. There are few landmarks and NO trail signs. Please review the map and read the directions below. On the run, pay attention to critical junctions on your way out so that you'll recognize them on the way back.

Route (red line): Head up the single track from the lot. Take a left about 200 yards up. Follow the trail to the top, then continue to the north side of the plateau, staying outside of the paved CDOT test track. At the north end, go left, west, on the old jeep road. You've gone just under 1-mile so far. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! We'll try to mark this turn with rocks.*

Follow the jeep trail to the west. At no time should you cross the paved CDOT test track. If you get there by mistake, head north until you find the trail. You will pass by an E-W fence line, cross a N-S fence line, then look for a small abandoned building on the right. A short distance later, the trail starts up a small hill, then splits.* REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! Go either way (we generally stay right on the way out). Follow the trail around the small hill. Continue west after the two trails merge, until you reach a larger, abandoned, jeep road. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! Bear right and head west towards the power lines. In the dark, head towards the lighted "M" on Lookout Mtn. Depending on time, continue past the power lines, down the hill to the far western edge of the plateau, then up the "Golden Stairs," a rock perch overlooking the town of Golden.* Return the same way.

Faster runners may want to follow the longer route (purple line): Just after the start of the jeep road, go right. Follow the trail out to the northern edge. The trail curves west, and then south. There are two options. For a longer run, near the apex of the plateau, take a right back to the west, then follow the trail down the hill to the "Golden Stairs." Return via the main route (red line). Or, continue south (green line) until you reach the jeep road. Then go left, east, and return via the main route.

* Regrouping points. Please wait for new runners.

++++++++++

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Elk Meadow, lower lot (T=3, P=2-5, N=2)**. The run starts promptly at 8:30am.

http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/elk.htm

Take the Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit 252 from I-70. Continue through Bergen Park ~4.5 mi. Just after you pass Elk Meadow on your right, turn right at the light at the bottom of the hill, turn right onto Lewis Ridge Rd., then an immediate right into the dirt lot.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs, but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

Return the
same way.

Many of the newer members may be wondering why all the fuss about
snowshoeing. Well, it's: fun, extremely easy to learn, a great
workout, inexpensive, and can take you to some great places. See the
schedule of events below.

I encourage everyone to get out there and try some snowshoeing. If you
are just getting started, go to one of the Winter Trails events,
either this Sat at Echo Lake, or Feb 19 and Rocky Mtn Nat Park.

Snowshoeing is the warmest (outside) and possibly the easiest winter
sport. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Just a minute or two is all
it takes to get going. Your stride is almost the same as running
(until you get into deeper powder). It requires more power and hip
strength. You can sweat more and get your heart rate up higher than
running or biking the steepest hill on a hot, summer day. Modern
snowshoes are relatively small and lightweight. A good pair of
snowshoes will last you for years. Some have lifetime warranties. You
can go almost anywhere. You don't even need a trail. It's great
training for trail running and biking.

Don't be afraid to try a race. Most of them are fun and friendly. Sure
there will be some fast people there, but almost every race has people
who walk the whole way. Many races have free loaners available. You
can also rent running snowshoes at places like Runners Roost and
Boulder Running Co. Don't try to relate a road race to the time or
effort it will take for the same distance on snowshoes. Most snowshoe
courses aren't accurately measured (it's hard to use a wheel on snow).
When you go off packed trails (which makes it more fun), your times
will be a lot slower. Even the top racers walk sometimes. The winning
time in a 5k race may be 30 minutes or more. The Solomon Series races
are on hard packed trails, so times will be a lot faster.

A few tips on clothing. Dress like you would for nordic skiing or a
winter bike ride. A few light layers are better then one thick one.
You will warm up quickly, so be prepared to shed layers as you go.
Wear a wicking layer next to the skin.

DON'T WEAR FLEECE! Wear slick, outer layers to shed snow. Fleece is
like velcro for snow. Close pockets and mesh pouches. You get wet from
below, kicking up snow as you walk/run.

Keeping your feet warm and dry is important. Lightweight, waterproof
foot gear is important. I use running shoes with neoprene socks when I
race (boots for hiking in powder). Nordic ski boots work well. Gaiters
are a good idea. It'll keep snow out of your shoes. I use small trail
gaitors with my running shoes, and back-country gaitors when hiking.

We will be carpooling to some of these events. Look for details in the
regular DTR messages.

+ Thursday night run: Red Rocks (P=3, T=1-3, N=2)**

+ Saturday Evergreen Runners Circle run: Upper Bear Creek Rd, 5mi mark (T=1, P=2, N=1)**

+ Tue morning runs: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**

+ Rocky Mountain Road Runners

+ Carpool to events

+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events

This Thursday evening's run is at Red Rocks (P=3, T=1-3, N=2)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An early group usually starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.

Directions: Meet at Trading Post, just below the ampitheatre at Red Rocks.

From C470, take the Morrison exit. Head west, through the town of Morrison. Go past the traffic light at hwy 8. Take the next right and follow the signs to the Trading Post.

From I-70 (from central Denver, take hwy 6 to I-70), take the Red Rocks/Morrison exit, #259, and go south. About 1 mile down the hill, turn right into Red Rocks and follow the signs to the Trading Post.

Route (see attached): There are both road and trail options. The road is a good hill workout, has almost no traffic, and can be run without lights.

Road (T=1, P=3, N=3): Follow the yellow line. Starting at the Trading Post (TP), head down the hill. At the first junction (L), take a left and follow the road ~½mi to the Will Call booth. Take the next left on the dirt road (D1). Go left up the dirt road to the next paved road (D2). Go left up the paved road. At the 3-way junction (3-WAY), go left and head back towards the TP. Go right just before TP. This road winds down hill for about 3/4 mi. At the road junction (B), make a sharp left and head up the road to the next junction (L). You've gone ~3.7mi. From here, you can repeat the loop, staying straight at L the first time, then going left and returning to TP the next lap, for 7.4mi. You can repeat just the lower loop (TP-B-L-TP) for 6.1mi. Repeating just the upper loop (D1-D2-3WAY-TP) is 5.3mi.

There are several ways to add more. From 3WAY, run up-and-back either to the observation point (OBS), 0.7mi; through the tunnel to the upper lot (UL), 0.9mi; or both, 1.5mi.

The dirt road from D1 to D2 may be muddy, so be prepared to improvise.

Trail (T=3, P=3-4, N=2): Follow the purple line. Starting at the Trading Post (TP), head up the hill past the ampitheatre. Just before 3WAY*, faster runners should look for a trail on the right. Take the trail down the hill, then parallel the dirt road up to D2. Slower runners should go right on the road to D2. At D2, take the Red Rocks trail up into Matthews Winters park. At RR*, ~0.7mi up, stay right at the trail junction and follow the trail around the plateau. To avoid any major climbs, continue to MS or beyond; and return the same way. If you're looking for more hills, continue around to MS*. The trail comes in from behind. Take a sharp left, climb up the switchbacks (this trail can be icy), across the plateau, then down the other side. Stay right at RR and down the trail to D2. For a shorter way back, at D2, go right to 3WAY, then left to TP. For a little longer return, follow the dirt road from D2 to D1; go right on the paved road; about a 1/3-mi up, take the trail back up to TP (red on the map).

* Regrouping points. Please wait for new runners.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Upper Bear Creek Rd, 5mi mark (T=1, P=2, N=1)**. The run starts promptly at 8:30am.

This is a good winter running location. The run is out-and-back on lightly traveled and maintained paved and dirt roads. Start running up the paved road. After ~¾ mile, the road curves left and goes up a short hill. After the hill, go right onto the dirt road. It's another 2+ miles, gradually uphill, to the turnoff to the Elk Preserve. Stay straight another 100 yards, to the end, and turn around there. Or, go left and continue another mile up to the Elk Preserve gate.

Take the Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit 252 from I-70. Take hwy 74 about 7 miles, through Bergen Park, past Elk Meadow, down the hill, towards the lake. As you are coming down the hill before the lake, just before the road curves left, veer right onto the short frontage road, then turn right at the Stop sign onto Upper Bear Creek Rd. Go 5mi up the road. Meet at the dirt turnout at the 5mile marker.

Many of you know that I am actively involved in the Rocky Mountain Road Runners (RMRR).

RMRR is Colorado's oldest (45 years) and largest (600+) running group. The membership ranges from kids, to those in their 70s. The bulk of the membership is middle of the packers, but there are those with mid-30s 10k speed, to those running 60+ minutes. There is also a contingent of race-walkers.

The Trophy Series (TS) is one of the key features of the club. The TS races use a handicap start and scoring system. Racers are assigned start times based on their previous performances with the slowest runners and walkers start first. The winner is the first person to cross the finish line. This way, everyone has an equal chance of winning. You accumulate points, throughout the year, based on your finishing position. The TS races are held once a month, Jan-Dec, from 2 to 10 miles, from Waterton Canyon to Westminster. The TS races are free for members.

Other member benefits include discounts to area running stores, discounts for other club races, weekly track workouts during the warmer months, and other weekly group runs.

With the start of the new year, now is the time to consider joining RMRR.

The first TS race of the year is this Sunday, Jan 9, 10km. For more information, go to www.rmrr.org, or call 303-871-8366

Tue morning run at South Table Mtn

Date: Tuesday, January 4, 2005
Time: 5:15AM MST (GMT-07:00)

Join Leigh for a Tue morning run, at South Table Mtn at 5:15am.
Look for her in a yellow Xterra, often driven by a standard
poodle.

These runs will continue every week as long as people show up.
Please contact Leigh if you plan to show up, and for more info
on the Tue morning run: inclinerunner@...

Directions: Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver
West Blvd. Go north to the first street. Turn left. Go 2 blocks
to the NREL lot.

From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax. Turn right
and continue past the shopping center on the left. Turn left at
Denver West Marriott Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the
directions above. There are no bathrooms or changing facilities
at this site.

Route: You'll probably stay together. Leigh knows the way. Just
in case...

Head up the single track from the lot. About 100 yards up, just
past the closed trail, make a left at the fork. Follow the trail
to the top, then continue to the north side of the plateau,
staying outside of the paved CDOT test track. At the north end,
go left, west, on the old jeep road. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE
WAY BACK! You've gone <1-mile so far.

Follow the jeep trail to the west. At no time should you cross
the paved CDOT test track. If you get there by mistake, head
north until
you find the trail. You will pass by an E-W fence line, cross a
N-S fence line, then look for a small abandoned building on the
right. A short distance later, stay right at the fork. Follow
the trail around the small hill until it meets a larger jeep
road. Bear right and head west towards the power lines. REMEMBER
THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! Depending on time, continue past the
power lines, down the hill to the far western edge of the
plateau, then up the "Golden Stairs," a rock perch overlooking
the town of Golden. Return the same way.

This Thursday evening's run is at Green Mtn., Rooney Road lot (T=3, P=2-4; N=3)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. The early group usually starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.

Directions: From Denver, take 6th ave to the end of the freeway. Turn onto Colfax or US 40. Go about 1 mile, just under the C-470 extension, then turn left at the light, Rooney Road. The lot is about 1.5 miles ahead, on the left.

From the south, take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west, then take the first right onto Rooney Road, before you enter Morrison, by the Conoco station. Rooney road goes by Bandimere Speedway, under C-470, then ends about 2.5 miles up at Alameda. Go left, cross over C-470, then take the next right onto Rooney Road again. The lot is about 1/2 mile up on the right.

Route (see attached): There are several options. Please choose the appropriate route for your speed to finish in about 1:00-1:10.

Start by taking the pedestrian bridge over C-470. Take the far right dirt trail. Follow the trail around the south side of the mountain, past the first few trail junctions. There's a junction in ~0.75mi (GM1). Go right (left takes you back to the start; straight climbs up steeply) and continue around the south side of the mountain. The trail takes you near the road, next to a small lot, at ~2.0mi; continue straight. At ~2.5mi, there a set of jeep tracks heading up to the left (GM2). You'll see (in the daylight) a fence on the left, up the hill. Do not turn here. Continue to the next junction, the Utah trail, 3.1mi (UTAH). This is the first option.

Option 1A: Intermediate runners should go left here, or see 1C below. Go up for ½mi then go left at the trail junction (GM5). Go up the trail another 1mi to the service road (GM6). Go left for 0.7mi to option 5.

1B: Faster runners should continue straight and continue around to the Florida lot (FLA), 3.4mi.

1C: Slow runners, and anyone wanting to avoid any big climbs, should continue to the Florida lot, or until you've been out 30-35 min, then return the same way.

Option 2: At the large, dirt, Florida lot (FLA), go left onto the single track at the north end of the lot. About ½mi up, take a 90° left turn, and continue up the next rise to option 3.

Option 3A: Go left on the single track. After ¼mi, go right at the junction onto the Utah trail (GM5). Continue another 1mi up to the service road. Go left, then continue to option 5.

3B: Continue climbing up the ridge to the towers. Take a left on the service road and continue ~1¼mi to option 5. This is a few minutes shorter than 3A.

Option 4: Skip it this time.

Option 5A: (GM7) The service road takes a sharp, left turn and heads down steeply. Stay on the road. It's about another mile to the finish.

5B: Stay straight onto a single track. After ¼mi, Go left onto a single track (GM8). This rocky trail winds its way down the side of the mountain. After ~1mi, go left at the saddle down a steep trail. This goes over a couple of rises, then merges back with the service road. Go right and continue another 0.4mi to the finish. 5B is ~.8mi longer than 5A.

Tue morning run at South Table Mtn

Date: Tuesday, December 28, 2004

Brrr!

Tonight's dinner is still on. However, I think that it's just too cold
to have fun looking at x-mas lights. We will still meet at Las
Margaritas for dinner, but change the time to 6:30pm. Feel free to
run, if you really want to, then join us afterwards. We'll keep the
chips warm. Las Margaritas is at 1066 S Gaylord, 2 blocks W of
University, and 2 blocks N of Louisiana.

I will still collect clothing for the homeless tonight, next Thursday, and at
the NY Day pancake breafast and run.

Bring your used clothing to the xmas lights run this Thursday. Every
winter, I collect old clothing and bring it to a homeless shelter.

Clear out your closets of those extra race t-shirts, running shoes,
and any other clothing in clean and usable conditions. Bring it ot
the run this Thursday. I will combine it with clothing collected from
the Rocky Mountain Road Runners. I will then deliver it to the Denver
Rescue Mission.

Put your old clothing to a good use.

+ Tue morning runs: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4)**
+ 2nd annual New Year's day run and pancake breakfast. RSVP!

+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events

Happy Solstice everyone. The bad news is that it's cold outside. The
good news is that the days start getting longer.

++++++++++

This Thursday evening is our annual holiday lights run and party. Meet
at 6:00pm, at the South HS parking lot, NW corner, at Louisiana and
Franklin, just across from Wash Park (red star on attached map).

The run will be a casual jog through the neighborhoods around Wash
Park. This will be a very easy run, about 50 minutes, as we look at the
decorated houses.

After the run, join us for a celebration and dinner at Las Margaritas, 1066 S
Gaylord, just N of Mississippi. That is 5 blocks E, and 2 blocks N of the HS
(blue X on attached map). Bring warm and dry clothes to change into after the
run. You are welcome to join us for dinner even if you can't make the run. Meet
us there around 7:00 - 7:15pm.

The forecasts call for very cold temperatures on Thursday. If it is as
cold as expected, we won't wait around much before the start, we will
probably run a little faster to keep warm, and won't dawdle afterwards
before heading over to the restaurant for dinner.

++++++++++

There is no Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run on 12/25 or 1/1. The
next ERC run is scheduled for 1/8.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people

go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

This Thursday evening's run is at Stonehouse Park, (T=1, P=1-2, N=2)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An informal group usually meets at 5:30pm.

This is an optional dirt/paved mix, or all pavement run. Thus, you don't need a bright light. After the run, we will head over to the Boulder Running Company party (see below).

Directions (see attached map): From the north, take Wadsworth or Kipling south from hwy 6. From Wadsworth, turn west onto Yale. Yale is ~1mi north of Hampden, and 1/2mi south of Morrison Rd, at the bottom of the hill. Go west on Yale ~1/2 mile to Estes. Turn left. Go 1/4 mile and turn left into the lot. From Kipling, go east at Morrison Rd. for ~1mi. Turn right at the light at Estes/Garrison. Go about 1/2mi then turn left into the lot.

From the east, take hwy 285 to Wadsworth. Go north ~1mi to Yale. Turn left, then follow the directions above.

From the west, take hwy 285 to Kipling. Go north to Dartmouth and turn right. Turn right again at the next street, Dartmouth Place. Continue to the stop sign at Estes. Turn left, go over the creek, then turn right into the lot.

Main Route: This is a fairly easy route to follow. Start on the wide dirt path that is, across the street from the lot, and head west. After ~2/3-mi, it merges with the bike path. Continue west for another 1/4-mi. Jog left, cross Old Kipling, then pick up the path again on the other side. Follow the path as it winds through the condo complex. When you hit the road at the golf course, go left and follow the road/bike path towards the golf clubhouse. Do not take Morrison Rd. Past the clubhouse, the bike path splits right from the road. Follow the path as it climbs to the top of the dam. The run should be about an hour, so turn and return the same way when you hit 30 minutes. To add more, go left at and run across the top of the dam.

If you miss the path we started on, continue east on the bike path. About 200 yards after crossing under Estes, look for a footbridge on your left. Cross here to the finish.

Additional trail/dirt start: By the picnic shelters, head east on the wide dirt path. Follow the path along the south side of two ponds. The path curves left at the far end of the 2nd pond. There, go right and head east towards Wadsworth. When you hit the paved path, just before Wadsworth, go right and cross the footbridge. Take an immediate right and either take the bike path, or the parallel single track trails west back towards the start. After ~3/4 mi, you can go right, across the bridge, back to the lot. Then, cross the road and follow the main route. Or, skip the bridge and continue west on the bike path.

++++++++++

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Beaver Brook Trail, Genesee (T=4, P=3, N=4)**. Meet at the park-n-ride lot, on the north side of I-70, at the Genesee exit (#254), by the buffalo overlook.

For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html

Schedule:

12/25 & 1/1 - no ERC runs

1/8 - Upper Bear Creek Rd

++++++++++

The Boulder Running Company (BRC), in Littleton, will be holding a holiday party on Dec 16, 5:30-8:30pm. All regularly priced items will be20% off that night. There will be refreshments, raffles every ½ hour, and music. All DTR runners are welcome. It is on a Thursday, so we will head over to the store immediately after the run. BRC is located on the SE corner of Wadsworth and Bowles, 303-932-6000.

Directions, from the run: Go left, from the lot, heading south on Estes. Just after passing under hwy 285, turn left onto the frontage road. Turn right onto Wadsworth and go ~3 miles to Bowles. Turn left onto Bowles, an immediate right into the shopping center, then right in the lot to BRC.

++++++++++

Karen Voss and Peter Szymanski are getting married this Saturday (finally, after something like 13 years of living together). They have extended an invite to their reception to everyone on DTR.

First, join Karen at the ERC run in the morning. Then, join Pete and Karen at their reception that evening.

Time: 6:30-9 pm

Dress: Casual

Location: Evergreen Conference Center, 27618 Fireweed Dr.

From I-70 West: Take the Evergreen Parkway, exit #252, to highway 74. Continue on 74 through downtown Evergreen (don’t make a sharp right turn at the bottom of the hill past the lake). Turn left on Meadow Drive (by Bradley-Sinclair Gas Station). Go one block & turn right on Iris. Continue to Fireweed ("T" intersection) & turn right. Go down the hill & turn right into the ECC parking lot.

From HWY. 285: Exit at C470, Morrison exit to Hwy. 74 west 10 miles to Evergreen. Turn right onto Meadow Drive & follow the directions as above.

++++++++++

Our annual x-mas lights run and dinner will be Dec 23. This is a very casual run. We will go slowly through the neighborhood, looking at x-mas lights, followed by dinner at a nearby restaurant. In the past, we've run the streets around Wash Park, then gone to dinner at Las Margaritas, on South Gaylord. Let me know soon if you know of another neighborhood with good lights.

at this site.

This Thursday evening's run is at Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=3, P=3,
N=2)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An informal group usually
meets at 5:30pm.

From the east
on I70, take hwy 58 west, through Golden, to hwy 6; turn left at hwy 6,
up the hill, to Lookout. From the south, take C470 to the end; just
past I70, it will let you off onto hwy 6. Take hwy 6 west for about
1.5mi to Lookout. There's a porta-potty in the small park on the left,
below the pillars.

Run description: The main route is out and back (there are some
additional options for faster runners). Please keep your run to about
1:00-1:10. In other words, you should turn around in about 35 minutes.

There are both road and trail options. The road may be a good choice
for those without good lights. The hill gives a good workout and
traffic is pretty light. Note: The road is longer than the trails, both
in time and distance. Please judge your time accordingly.

Trail Route: Start up the road ~1/2-mi. Go left onto the trail at the
small dirt turnout. Head up the trail for another ~1.5 mi to Windy
Saddle.* If you have lights, cross the road, jog left, then pick up the
Beaver Brook trail on the other side. If you don't have lights, go left
and head up the road until you've been out 30-35 minutes, then return
on the road.

Continuing on the trail, in another 1/4-mi, at the next trail junction,
make a sharp left. At the next junction, about a mile further up,
intermediate runners should stay left. This takes you to a park* in
another ¼ mi.

Stay
right, and continue down the same way you came up. 2) For an even
longer route, go right and follow the trail (or road) along the west
side of the mansion, outside the fence for ~1mi. Go left at Lookout Mtn
Rd for another 1.1 mile to the park. Then, either go left and look for
the trail in the park, or continue down the road.

*Regrouping places:
+ At the Windy Saddle road crossing, both ways;
+ At the park, if you continue up the trail.
+ At Boettcher Mansion, for the faster runners.

Road Route: Run up and back along Lookout Mtn Road. It's ~4.5mi and
1,500' to the park.

* Regrouping points. Please wait here to help guide new runners.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Evergreen Lake
House (T=3, P=3, N=4)**.
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/alderfer.htm

Evergreen Lake House (T=3, P=3, N=4)**, Evergreen; Denver Mtn Parks:
Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70. Continue on

before the lake, just before the road curves left, veer right onto the
short frontage road. Turn right at the Stop sign onto Upper Bear Creek
Rd, go ~1/4 mi, then turn left into the lake house lot.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html

Our annual x-mas lights run and dinner will be Dec 23. This is a very
casual run looking at x-mas lights, followed by dinner at a nearby
restaurant. In the past, we've run through the neighborhoods around
Wash Park, then gone to dinner at Las Margaritas, on South Gaylord. Let
me know soon if you know of another neighborhood with lots of decorated
houses.

run is optional. Derek & Jessica will be providing the grub. Please
RSVP to Derek at derek@.... It's not required, but
will help them have the right amount of food.

Directions: Take C-470 to the Ken Caryl exit and head west. Stay right
at the "Y," at the light, and head up the hill past the horse barns,
towards the Manor House. Stay to the left at the next fork in the road.
Continue through the stop sign. Bradford Intermediate School should be
on your right. Park here and then walk across the main road (Valley
Parkway) to Dawn Heath Dr. Derek and Jessica's house is on the corner

This Thursday evening's run is at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2,
N=2)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm. An informal group usually
meets at 5:30pm.

BCLP is a good location for winter running. The trails hold up well on
snow and ice. The roads and bike paths are lightly used and provide a
good alternative.

Trail Route (in blue on attached): The run starts on the bike path
across Morrison Rd. Run under C-470. Jog right across the first bridge,
then an immediate left onto a single track. Run through the picnic area
[1], cross the road, and pick up the trail on the other side. Continue
following the path east along the south side of Bear Creek, around the
horse fences and past the exercise stations. About 1.75mi from the
start, the path curves right, loops back to the left, then leads to a
large, dirt, parking lot. Cross the lot, staying to the right side.
Head between the large rocks on the other side of the lot, then down
the hill to the creek.* The creek is easy to cross on rocks [2]. Go
left on the trails and head to the road at the base of the mountain
[3]. Go left on the road and follow it across the base of the dam. At
the north end of the dam,* go left on the single track and follow it
back west along the edge of the lake. Cross through the fisherman's
parking lot [5]. Just after the trees on the other side, go left onto
the dirt path. Follow this back west, along the north side of Bear
Creek. At the end of the trail, come up to the road, continue west past
the tollbooth, onto the bike path, then back under C-470 to the finish.

Stay
straight, onto the park road, and through the tollbooth. Stay left on
the road (brown line) just past the tollbooth. Short and intermediate
runners should turn around after ~30 minutes. To add a little more
distance, at Mountain View, go left and climb to the top of the dam.
Continue down the back side to the golf course, or go right, across the
top of the dam, before turning around. Faster runners should go right
at Mountain View*. Take the road across the base of the dam. Continue
south to the bike path (dark blue line). Go right and take the bike
path all the way to the finish.

* Regrouping points. Please wait here to help guide new runners.

distance and park near the "Y", just below the lodge.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via

"We are investigating the storage and return of elastic spring energy
from the legs. We are looking for male runners (18-40 years old) who
are not injured, train at least 30 miles per week and can run faster
than 20 minutes for a flat 5km race at Boulder altitude (or
equivalent).

Subjects will visit the Locomotion Lab at the University of Colorado
for two visits. The first one involves running at two speeds in normal
gravity and in a special reduced gravity harness. We will also pull
backwards and/or forwards at your waist while you run. This first visit
(habituation) will take around 1 hour. The second visit will take
around 2 hours. Subjects will run for 5 minutes in 9 different
conditions at speeds. We will be measuring the forces you exert on the
ground and also measuring your oxygen consumption rate.

Unfortunately, we do not have grant funds to pay subjects for this
project."

Arthur Lydiard will be speaking at Boulder HS on Dec. 1, 7:30-9:00pm.
Lydiard coached New Zealand runners to Olympic medals in the 60s,
establishing many of the modern distance training practices followed
today. “Your maximal oxygen uptake goes up 5% just by shaking his
hand,” jokes Mark Wetmore, CU track and cross-country coach, who will
join him that night. Many of you are probably follow his training
principles without knowing it. Tickets are $10 in advance at Fleet Feet
in Boulder, or $12 at the door. For those who can't get to Boulder in
advance, Greg Cunningham, the store manager, told me that you can call
the store and put your name on a list, then only pay $10 at the door.

go left, west, on the old jeep road.

There is a run this Thursday. The run will be in the morning to give
you time to get to, and free up calories for your Thanksgiving
afternoon festivities, Meet Joe Paniccia at Lair 'O The Bear Park
(T=2-3, P=3) at 8:30am. This seems like a lot more fun than a lame, BKB
road run in Wash Park. :)

If you are planning to attend the run, please contact Joe Paniccia at
Joseph.Paniccia@.... It's not neccessary to respond - it's OK to
just show up - but it would be helpful.

Directions: Take C-470 to the Morrison exit, hwy 74. Go west, through
Morrison, and continue 4.5mi to the park entrance on the left. Meet at
the far, west end of the lot.

Route: Head west on the Creekside trail from the lot. Follow the creek,
up the canyon, for about 1 mile. Look for the Bear Creek single-track
trail coming in from behind you on the left. If you get to the chain
across the trail, or hwy 74, you've gone too far. It's about 100'
before the chain. A couple of miles up, it crosses a few other trails.
Feel free to explore. Remember to stay on the Bear Creek Trail to get
back to Lair. Follow the Bear Creek Trail out as far as you want to go,
then return the same way.

The first snowshoe race of the season is this Saturday, at Ski Cooper,
near Leadville. This is the renewal of what has been traditionally been
the first race of the season, but hasn't been held for a few years.
This is a good race for beginners because it is fairly fast (in
snowshoe terms, that means the winner will be likely ~8:30/mile pace)
and not too technical (the course is mostly on packed, rolling trails,
assuming it's the same as before).

If interested in carpooling to the race, please contact Martin Pahl,
801-712-5471 (yes the area code is correct), thebodydynamic@...

Directions: Take I-70 to the Copper Mtn exit, #195. Go south on hwy 91
towards Leadville. As you are coming into Leadville, go right onto hwy
24 north. Go ~8miles to Ski Cooper, at Tennessee Pass. Please call the
number listed in the calendar to make sure that there's enough snow for
the race.

The first Incline Club (IC) run of the season is Sunday, Nov 28. The IC
runs on trails around Manitou Springs every Sunday, from Thanksgiving
until the Pikes Peak race. They stay on lower trails over the winter,
then start going higher on the Pikes trails as the snow fades away. The
group is organized by Matt Carpenter. There is a large number, often
100 or more, and a wide range of runners at these runs. The group is
free. For more info go to http://www.inclineclub.com/

Leigh will be going to the first run as is looking for people to
carpool with. If interested, please contact her at
inclinerunner@.... To carpool to future IC runs (or other events),
send me a message (please by the weekend before) and I'll post it here.

Arthur Lydiard will be speaking at Boulder HS on Dec. 1, 7:30-9:00pm. Lydiard
coached New Zealand runners to Olympic medals in the 60s, establishing many of
the modern distance training practices followed today. “Your maximal oxygen
uptake goes up 5% just by shaking his hand,” jokes Mark Wetmore, CU track and
cross-country coach, who will join him that night. Many of you are probably
follow his training principles without knowing it. Tickets are $10 in advance at
Fleet Feet in Boulder, or $12 at the door. For those who can't get to Boulder in
advance, Greg Cunningham, the store manager, told me that you can call the store
and put your name on a list, then only pay $10 at the door. 303-939-8000,

This Thursday's run is at Green Mtn., Rooney Road lot (T=3, P=2-4; N=3). The main group will start at 6:15pm. A smaller group usually starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie and Kim.

Continue to the next junction, the Utah trail, 3.1mi (UTAH).* This is the first option.

Option 1A: Intermediate runners should go left here, or see 1C below. Go up for ½mi then go left at the trail junction (GM5). Go up the trail another 1mi to the service road (GM6).* Go left for 0.7mi to option 5.

1B: Faster runners should continue straight and continue around to the Florida lot (FLA), 3.4mi.*

1C: Slow runners, and anyone wanting to avoid any big climbs, should continue to the Florida lot, or until you've been out 30-35 min. Then return the same way.

Option 2A: At the large, dirt, Florida lot (FLA), go left onto the single track at the north end of the lot. It merges with 2B about ½mi up, at a 90 degree left turn. Continue up to option 3.

2B: Go straight through the north end of the lot for ~¼mi. Go left up the next trail. It merges with 2A.

Above the next rise after 2A&B merge, there's a single track on the left (GM4).*

Option 3A: Go left on the single track. After ¼mi, go right at the junction onto the Utah trail (GM5). Continue another 1mi up to the service road. Go left, then continue to option 5.

3B: Continue climbing up the ridge to the towers.* This is a few minutes shorter than 3A, unless you take 4B.

Option 4A: Go left at the towers and follow the service road another mile, over the top of Green Mtn, to option 5.

4B: Go right at the towers and start down the ridge for about 50 yards. Go left onto a single track. This parallels the service road heading NW. Merge back up to the service road. Go right and continue to option 5.

* Regrouping points. Please regroup at the Grazing Elk trailhead with others of similar paces.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Alderfer/3 Sisters (T=3, P=3, N=2)**.

http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/alderfer.htm

Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70. Follow hwy 74 ~7.5mi, to the main light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming from I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4 mile up, onto Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the hill, past the high school, past the lower Alderfer lots, to the open meadows at the top. Park in the dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house.

There is no run currently planned for Thanksgiving. This is something we've done in the past. It's a great way to free up room for those extra calories most of you will be taking in later that day. I'll be out of town this year. If anyone is interested in leading a run next Thursday, please send me the pertinent information (time, place, route) by this weekend. "Leading" just means setting the run location, greeting the runners at the start, and explaining the route. It doesn't mean being the fastest runner.
