+ Thursday evening run: Bear Creek Lake Park
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Beaver Brook Trail/Genesee
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Student massage clinic

I have a new web site. Over the next several weeks, I'll be putting
many of the maps, FAQs, and other DTR stuff on the site in a DTR
section. That way everyone will be able to access the information
without a Yahoo ID. http://www.runuphillracing.com

This Thursday's trail run is at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2) in
Lakewood. Wed is the full moon, so this should be a great run. We may
not even need lights. The trails are great to run on in the winter.

Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west. Take the first right
at Rooney Rd, then an immediate right into the dirt lot, across from
the Conoco Station. Meet in the lot. The run starts by taking the
bike path across Morrison Rd into the park.

Route: Cross Morrison Rd to the south, then start on the bike path
across. Go under C-470 and head into the park. Go right across the
first bridge, then an immediate left onto a single track. Run through
the picnic area, parking lot, cross the road, and pick up the trail
on the other side. The faster runners will go right at the road,
follow a slightly longer route up a small plateau, then merge back to
the main route. Continue following the path east along the south side
of the creek, past the exercise stations. About 1.75mi from the
start, the path curves right. Look for a single track on the left
heading over a small hill. This leads to a large, dirt, parking lot.
Cross the lot, staying to the right side. Head through the large
rocks on the other side of the lot, then down the hill to the creek.
Cross the creek, then go left on the trails to the base of Mt.
Carbon. Go left on the road across the base of the dam. The fast
group may climb the hill, then run across the top of the dam.

At the far end of the dam, there are two options: 1) go left onto the
single track; cross through the parking lot, go left onto the trail
and follow it back to the toll booth; 2) continue around the chain to
the road, go left and follow it back to the toll booth. The fast
group may take a trail to the north of the main road on the way back.
At the entrance booth, continue west to the bike path, then back
under C-470 to the end.

Can anyone give me a ride home, Wash Park area, after the run and
dinner?

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at the Beaver
Brook Trail/Genesee. Take the Genesee/Buffalo Overlook exit, #254,
from I-70. Meet at the park-n-ride lot, on the north side of I-70. If
the trail is icy, they may run up to the flagpole at the top of
Genesee Mtn instead of the trail.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some
people will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. We
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I often attend these
runs, but I don't lead them. So please don't ask me the questions.

+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Student massage clinic
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

Derek and Jessica Griffiths invite all to the first annual Pancake Run
on New Year's Day at their house in Ken Caryl.

We will have a fun SLOW (i.e., hangover pace) run around the trails of
Ken Caryl Valley (various options from 3-10 miles), followed by all you
can eat pancakes. Feel free to stick around and watch some football,
after a shower of course (bring your own towel), and drink some good
old liquid refreshment.

We will start the run promptly at 10:00 AM (so you have time to recover
from your New Year's Eve parties). We will all run together, as fast as
the slowest person."

Directions (see attached map): This is similar to the directions to the
Manor House. Take C-470 to the Ken Caryl exit. Go west, through the
hogback, into the valley. Stay right at the "Y" at the entrance to the

mix (and beer) to get.

Note: the regular Thursday night trail runs will return on 1/8/04.

left at the lake, turn right onto Upper Bear Creek Rd. Go about 1/4
mile and turn left into the Lake House parking lot.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. We usually go
out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I often attend these runs, but I
don't lead them. So please don't ask me the questions. For more info

EVENT INFORMATION

]DISTANCES: 3K and 10K.  The 3k (2 miles) is a fun run/walk.  The 10K (6 miles) is for more competitve snowshoers looking for a good challenge.  There will also be a 200-meter deep-snow-dash for all ages and abilities.

]THE COURSE:  Those who competed in previous Swift Skedaddles will agree that it was a great adventure!   Both the 3K and the 10K courses will provide action-packed snowshoeing at its best.  Don't expect any 10K P.R's, as at least 90% of the course is on ungroomed single track, with passing zones.  There will be lots of up's and down's (both you and the terrain!), and a few round and rounds.  The course will wind thought the forest and into open meadows.  If you take time to look around, you will see some fantastic scenery!  The course is challenging, but if you keep smiling, even 1st-timers will have no problem finishing!

]DATE, TIME, LOCATION:

January 4th, Silverthorne, Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks: 10 AM From I-70 (east or west) take the Silverthorne/Dillon exit (205). Travel north on Highway 9 approx. 3 miles through Silverthorne.  Turn left on the second Golden Eagle Road North.  You will see the clubhouse towards the top of the hill on the right.

February 28th, Frisco Nordic Center: 10 AM  From I-70 (east or west), take the Frisco exit (203).  Head south on Hwy. 9 towards Breckenridge.  About 1 mile past the town of Frisco, you will see the Frisco Nordic Center entrance on the left.

]REGISTRATION: Pre-registration by mail or on the Internet. Pre-registration price: $17.00, $9.00 for kids (14 and under).  A $5 fee added to all day-of entries.

*200-meter snow-dash is FREE to all participants.

*Registration fee includes a T-shirt, goodie bag, post-race snacks, prize drawing, free-demo snowshoes, and an exciting course!

*Register online at www.active.com or by mail to "I'm Crazy Events" P.O. Box 1590, Dillon, CO 80435

]PRIZES: Awards to the top three male and female 3K and 10K finishers in the following categories: 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+.  Cash prize to top two m/f overall and top overall masters m/f finishers in the 10K. There will also be a raffle drawing for some great prizes for all participants and volunteers.

]DEMO SNOWSHOES:  A limited number of free demo snowshoes (Tubbs) are available with a reservation.  Call 970-389-4838 to reserve a pair.  There is a snowshoe size requirement of 114 sq. inch minimum functional surface area for the competitive division.

]VOLUNTEERS: We need a few more volunteers to help with the smooth running of the snowshoe race.  Volunteers get a goodie bag, shirt, and use of a pair of demo snowshoes.  Call 970-389-4838 if you can help!

]FOR MORE INFORMATION: Call: 970-389-4838, e-mail: danelle@..., or on the web at www.racingunderground.com or www.active.com.

Meet at Mt. Falcon at 3:30pm, Wed, 12/24.

Directions: Take C470 to Morrison Rd. Go west from the highway,
through the town of Morrison, to hwy 8. Turn left at the light. At
the top of the hill, look for signs to the park. Turn right at
Forrest (I think) and follow the signs to the park.

Or, take hwy 285 to hwy 8, the first exit past C-470. Go right about
1mi past the Fort restaurant. Look for signs to the park, and follow
the directions above.

Sorry. I don't have a route description handy. I'm not sending this
from my computer. Please look up an old message from the last time we
ran there, sometime in October, for a route description.

This will be a fun run, not a time trial.

+ No Thursday run this week, but maybe Wed.
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Elk Meadow,
Upper/Stagecoach lot (T=3, P=3). Snowshoe after the run.
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

There is no Thursday night run this week. There will be a daytime run
next Thurs, New Years day.

If there is enough interest, I'll organize a group run for Wednesday
afternoon. Many companies only work part of the day Wednesday. So,
the run would be around 3:30-4:00pm so we could finish in daylight.
If interested, send a message to:

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Elk Meadow,
Upper/Stagecoach lot (T=3, P=3). Take I-70 to Evergreen Parkway, hwy
74, exit 252. Follow hwy 74 ~5mi to Stagecoach Blvd. It's the next
light after the lower Elk Meadow lot. Turn right and go about 1mi
past the Albertsons to the lot.

Join me for a snowshoe run after the ERC run. We'll go to the nearest
place with a decent snow pack, perhaps Squaw Mtn.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. We usually go
out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I often attend these runs, but I
don't lead them. So please don't ask me the questions. For more info

Every year, I clear out my closet of old running shoes, race shirts,
and other clothing. I bring the clothing to the Denver Rescue Mission
to be distributed to the homeless population.

I urge you to donate your old stuff. If you can't do it on your own,
I'll be happy to do it for you. Bring your old clothing the x-mas
lights run this Thurday night.

+ Thursday evening X-Mas Lights fun run at Wash Park, 6:00pm
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: O'Fallon Park (T=2, P=3)
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run is our annual X-Mas Lights run and dinner. This is
a fun, very easy, social run. We'll jog easily as a group through the
neighborhoods around Wash Park, oohing and aahing at the lights, for 45
min to an hour. Then, we'll go celebrate at dinner at Las Margaritas,
just a few blocks away. Bring dry clothes to change into after the run.

Note the time: Meet at 6pm. The run will start at 6:05 (5min grace time
Dave).

Directions (See attached): Meet at the South HS parking lot, in the NW
corner, near the traffic light, at the corner of Louisiana and
Franklin, just across the street from Wash Park. From I-25 south, take
the University Blvd exit. Go left (south), under the highway, to the
next traffic light. Turn right onto Buchtel and go past DU. Turn right
at the next light, Franklin, then proceed north, over I-25, to the
school. From I-25 north, take the Broadway exit. Go right onto Broadway
to the 4th light, Louisiana, by Pasquini's and a doughnut shop. Turn
left on Louisiana and go about 1mi to the school.

Can't make the run? Show up after the run, a little before 7, at the
South High lot, or around 7:15 at the restaurant. Las Margaritas is at
1066 S Gaylord, just 6 blocks east and 2 blocks north of the run.

++++++++++

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at O'Fallon Park
(T=2, P=3). These are some of the nicest trails in the area, and great
in the snow. Take C-470 to the Morrison exit, hwy 74. Go west, through
Morrison, and continue about 6mi to. The park entrance is on the left,
shortly before the town of Kittredge and the intersection with Meyers
Gulch Road.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. We usually go
out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I often attend these runs, but I
don't lead them. So please don't ask me the questions. For more info

I won't be able to make the Cherry Creek run tonight. I still
encourage you to show up. Here's the route info.

The standard route is on part trails. Start heading east on the wide
dirt path, directly across from the light. After about 1/3 mi, veer
left by the pond on your right. Follow the trail ~1/4 mi downhill and
across a foot bridge. Just across the bridge, take a right at the
trail junction, then continue on the trail as it cruves back to the
east. The trail crosses a road, then continues through an opening in
the fence on the other side. The path ends ~2mi into the run. Go left
to the main park road. Go right on the road for ~50 yards. Just past
the trees, look for a single track veering off on the right. Follow
this out until you've run 30 minutes or so, then return the same way.

Here's an alternate road route, in case the trail isn't cleared. Go
north along Dayton. Turn right into the park shortly before the dam
road. The park road should be cleared of snow, and have little or no
traffic. Run out and back.

+ Tuesday night DTC run: Cherry Creek State Park
+ Thursday evening run: Ken Caryl, lower (T=2, P=2), 6:30pm
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Chief Hosa (T=1, P=2)
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

Join me for a run tonight at Cherry Creek State Park. This is a flat,
non-technical, trail run. Meet at the elementary school, around the
corner from Cherry Creek HS, on Dayton, ~200 yds south of Union. See
message 393 for more details.

++++++++++

This Thursday's run is at Ken Caryl, lower trails (T=2, P=2) at 6:30pm
(due to change due to weather).

Meet at the Manor House. Take C-470 to the Ken Caryl exit. Go west,
into the canyon. Stay right at the "Y" and go about 1.3mi. Take the 2nd
right after the "Y" onto Mountain Laurel Dr. You should see a sign to
the Manor House. About 200 yds. up, take the next right onto Manor
House Rd. and follow the signs to the Manor House, the large white
house on the hill. Please park at the far end of the lower lot, on the
northeast side of the restaurant.

This is close to the full moon, so visibility should be good.

Route: Start heading west on the wide dirt path. Go around the gate.
About 1/4 mile up, turn right just before the climb gets steep. Follow
the trail west for about 1 mi to a very large red rock. Go right a
short distance. Just past the small park on your left, take a
135-degree left turn. This will take you up to some rocks, then back
onto a trail. Don't take the sharper, 90 degree left turn trail. If you
miss the trail on your left. Continue east and follow the road. You can
pick up the trail again near the end; go right. If you found the right
trail, follow it east. The trail curves right, down a hill crosses the
ravine (bridge), then up the other side. Bear left, then continue south
on the trail between the hogbacks. The trail heads gently up hill, then
down "Y" (see driving directions). For a short cut, near the crest of
the trail between the hogbacks, look for a trail on the right. Take
this up to the ridge. Go right, then follow the directions below. From
the "Y," make a sharp right and head back up along the ridge. There are
a couple of forks along the way. Take any one as long as you keep
following the ridge back to the north. Along the top, you'll see the
Manor House on your left. When you're about even with the Manor House,
take a trail down the hogback, cross the road, then head up the hill to
the start.

++++++++++

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Chief Hosa
(T=1, P=2). This run is almost all on maintained dirt roads, great for
when there's snow/ice on the trails. Take I-70 to the Chief Hosa exit,
#253. Go south (left if coming from Denver) across the highway. Go left
on the dirt frontage road a short distance and park near the "Y", just
below the lodge.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead these runs, so
please don't ask me the questions. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to:

Directions: Meet at the Manor House. Take C-470 to the Ken Caryl exit. Go west, into the canyon. Stay right at the "Y" and go about 1.3mi. Take the 2nd right after the "Y" onto Mountain Laurel Dr. You should see a sign to the Manor House. Please park at the far end of the lower lot, on the northeast side of the restaurant.

Manor House map

Routes

Lower: We will do the easier route that we typically took over the winter, Kendra's favorite, instead of climbing the steep hill. It's hard to clearly describe the route here. I plan to mark all of the key turns with surveyor tape or flour. Start heading west on the wide dirt path. Go around the gate. About 1/4 mile up, turn right just before the climb gets steep. Follow the trail west for about 1 mi to a very large red rock. Go right a short distance. Just past the small park on your left, take a 45 left turn. This will take you up to some rocks, then back onto a trail. Don't take the sharper left trail. If you miss the trail on your left, continue east and follow the road (yellow on map). You can pick up the trail again near the end of the road; go right. If you found the right trail, follow it east. The trail curves right, down a hill crosses the ravine (bridge), then up the other side. Bear left, then continue south on the trail between the hogbacks. The trail heads gently up hill, then down "Y" (see driving directions). For a short cut, near the crest of the trail between the hogbacks, look for a trail on the right (yellow on map). Take this up to the ridge. Go right, then follow the directions below. From the "Y," make a sharp right and head back up along the ridge. There are a couple of forks along the way. Take any one as long as you keep following the ridge back to the north. Along the top, you'll see the Manor House on your left. When you're about even with the Manor House, take a trail down the hogback, cross the road, then head up the hill to the start.
Ken Caryl Lower

Upper: Head west on the Manor trail, a wide, dirt path. This is a long climb of about 2.5-3mi. At a plateau, head right onto a single track. This continues to climb, zig-zagging to the north. The slower runners should turn and head back down the same way. For the faster runners, the trail curves back towards the east and crests the top. Just as it starts to head down, go right onto another single track trail. This is a narrow, technical trail that will lead you back to the Manor House trail. Then, head down to the start.

==================

Join me for a run this Tue night, 12/9, in the DTC.

Meet at 6:15pm, at the elementary school, around the corner from Cherry
Creek High, across from Cherry Creek State Park. This is the same place
the Phidippides group meets for their track workouts during the lighter
months. It's on Dayton, just south of Union and the dam road. Meet near
the traffic light. See the attached map (scanned for viruses before
sending).

We'll run on dirt trails in Cherry Creek State Park. These are
non-technical (i.e., not rocky), mostly flat trails. This is an
out-and-back course. The first ~2mi on the are on a wide, smooth, dirt
path. Then continue onto a fairly smooth single track as far as you
want. Mon is the full moon, so we should have good light, depending on
weather. We'll run for about an hour, or as long/short as the group
wants.

+ Thursday evening run: South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Golden Watershed
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Holiday Open Houses: Runners Roost, Running Delights, Boulder
Running Company
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run is at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2).

Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver West Blvd. Go
north to the first steeet. Turn left. Go 2 blocks to the NREL lot.
From 6th ave, exit at Indiana. Go north to Colfax. Turn right and
continue past the shopping center. Turn left at Denver West Marriott
Blvd. Go over I-70 and follow the directions above. There is no
bathroom or changing facilities at this site. You can stop at the
nearby Denver West Shopping Center or Marriott Hotel.

This is a fairly easy run. However, there are few landmarks and NO
trail signs. If you haven't done this run before, please read the
directions carefully, then stop and pay attention to critical
junctions during the run. You've been warned! It's just a short trip
to the top of the mountain and the top is fairly flat, although rocky
in spots

Route: Head up the single track from the lot. Stay left at the fork
just after the start. About 1/4-mile later, just before the top, make
a sharp right. At the top, continue to the north towards the phone
lines. At the north end of the plateau, go left. You've only gone
~3/4 mile. REMEMBER THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK! Follow the jeep trail
to the west. Stay north of the paved road (it's a CDOT test track).
If you get there by mistake, head north until you find the trail. At
no time should you cross the paved CDOT test track.

You will pass by an E-W fence line, then cross a N-S fence line. A
short distance later, stay right at the fork. Follow the trail around
the small hill until it meets a larger jeep road. REMEMBER THIS TURN
FOR THE WAY BACK! Bear right and head west towards the power lines.*
Depending on time, continue past the power lines, down the hill to
the far western edge of the plateau, then up the "Golden Stairs," a
large rock perch overlooking the town of Golden. Head back the same
way.

* For an alternate, slightly longer route for the faster runners:
Near the start of the jeep road, go right. Follow the trail out to
the northern edge. Follow the trail to the west, then south, take a
right back to the west, then head down the hill to the "Golden
Stairs." Return via the direct route, past the power lines via the
jeep road as above.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at the Golden
Watershed. Take the Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit 252 from I-70.
Continue through Bergen Park ~2.5 mi. Turn right onto Squaw Pass Rd.,
hwy 103. Go ~3.2mi up the road to the 2nd intersection with Old Squaw
Pass Rd. Go right, then park immediately on the dirt on the west side
of the road. The run starts through the fence with the "No
Trespassing" sign.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some
people will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead these
runs, so please don't ask me the questions. For more info about the

Since it seems that none of you can read my mind, the run this
Thursday morning will be at 8:30am. Meet at the Waterton Canyon lot.
From there, we'll run trails in Chatfield State Park, and build our
appetites for the afternoon feasts.

Directions: C-470 to Wadsworth. Go south 4.5mi to Waterton Rd. This
is the first left after the main entrance to Chatfield, where the
road curves right. Go ~200 yards, then turn left into the second dirt
lot.

+ Tuesday evening run: Highline Canal (T=1, P=1)
+ Thursday morning run: Chatfield (T=2, P=1-2)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Dave's House for a fun
run, then "no leftover turkey" brunch
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

Join me Tuesday evening for a run near DTC. Meet at 6:00pm in the lot
where the Highline Canal crosses Orchard. Take Orchard 2.9mi west of
I-25; ~1.9mi west of Holly; ~1mi west of Colorado. The lot is on the
right just before (east) of the canal. We'll do an out-and-back run
to the north on the canal. The canal is a smooth, wide, crushed dirt
path. Highline crosses Orchard twice. This is the east crossing.
Orchard doesn't go directly through from the west, University. Use a
map to figure out the zig-zags. Take Belleview to Holly, south to
Orchard, then right; or, take Arapahoe to Colorado, north to Orchard,
then left. If you're coming from Denver, a good way to come to avoid
I-25 traffic is to take Colorado south, past Hampden; turn left at
Quincy, where it ends; turn right at the stop sign at Holly; cross
Belleview to Orchard; turn right.

I am working on a project in the Tech Ctr, so I may continue the
Tuesday night runs for a while.

++++++++++

If you're not doing one of the turkey trot races, join me this
Thursday for a trail run in Chatfield State Park. Meet at the
Waterton Canyon lot. There are some fun, mostly flat, single-track
trails. I'll explain various routes that morning. You can go as short
as 4-5 miles, or join me for about 2 hours.

Directions: Take C-470 to Wadsworth. Go south for ~4.5mi. Turn left
at Waterton Rd. This is the only left after the entrance to the park
(don't enter the park), and is where Wadsworth curves right. Turn
left into the second lot (not the Discovery Pavilion).

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Dave's House
for a fun run, then "no leftover turkey" brunch. The run starts at
8:30am sharp. Meet at the Soda Creek Homeowner's Association Pond.
Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70. Go about 2
mi to hwy 65, at the bottom of a hill, by the park-n-ride. Turn right
on Highway 65 (toward I-70), go about a mile and a quarter to Meadow
Vista, turn right and go about a half mile to the pond.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some
people will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead these
runs, so please don't ask me the questions. For more info about the

+ Thursday evening run: Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Alderfer/3 Sisters (T=3,
P=3)
+ Trail races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run will be at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2) at
6:15pm.

Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west. Take the first right
at Rooney Rd, then an immediate right into the dirt lot, across from
the Conoco Station. Meet in the lot. If the weather/roads/traffic are
bad and you're coming from the north, don't take C-470. At the end of
the 6th ave freeway, go left onto Colfax/US 40. Turn left onto Rooney
Rd, the light just after crossing under C-470. Continue south past
Green Mtn to Alameda. Go left, cross C-470, then make a right back
onto Rooney Road. Continue south ~2.5mi to the lot.

Route: The run starts on the bike path across Morrison Rd into the
park. Go left under C-470 into the park.

The trails are pretty easy. Or, if you prefer, you can run the park
roads. To stay on the roads, don't cross the bridge. Continue
straight, past the toll booth. Turn at about 30 minutes. If you reach
the dam, go left and climb the road.

For everyone else, jog right across the first bridge, then an
immediate left onto a single track. Run through the picnic area,
parking lot, cross the road, and pick up the trail on the other side.
The faster group may take a slight detour here. Continue following
the path east along the south side of the creek, past the exercise
stations. About 1.75mi from the start, the path curves right. Look
for a single track on the left heading over a small hill. This leads
to a large, dirt, parking lot. Cross the lot, staying to the right
side. Head through the large rocks on the other side of the lot, then
down the hill to the creek. Cross the creek (an easy crossing on
rocks), then go left on the trails.

Option 1A: At the base of the mountain, slower runners should go left
on the paved road across the base of the damn, to 3A or B.

1B: Climb the single track up the mountain. At the top, follow the
single track on the left. After ~1/4 mile, go left at the fork
dropping down.

2A: Just before the dam road, make a sharp left onto a single track
trail. This trail parallels a large rock pile down to the base of the
dam. Then, go right on the road, north, across the base of the dam,
to option 3A

2B: Continue to the road atop the dam road. Go around the fence, then
left across the top of the dam. At the north end, make a sharp left
down the road. Go into the lot at the bottom of the road. By the
bathrooms, pick up a single-track trail. Take it down towards the
lake, then go right and follow 3A below.

3A: At the fence across the road, go left on the single track. Follow
it west along the north edge of the lake. Cross the parking lot, go
through the trees, then either: go left and follow the trail back; go
right out to the road on the right and follow 2B back.

3B: Continue through the gate and to the road at the north end of the
dam. Go left, and take it all the way back, past the entrance gate,
to the bike path under C-470.

Sisters (T=3, P=3). The run starts at 8:30am sharp. Take the
Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70, to the main light in
Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming from I-70)
on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4 mile up,
on Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the hill, past the high school, past
the lower Alderfer lots, to the open meadows at the top. Park in the
dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Occasionally, some
people will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead these
runs, so please don't ask me the questions. For more info about the

In response to several questions I've gotten over the past few weeks:

Lights

Choosing lights has traditionally involved a trade-off between
brightness, weight, and battery life. While this still holds true,
newer technology has changed this balance.

Incandescent - The old style bulbs, like a regular light bulb. Lower
light. Long battery life.
LED - Extremely lightweight, long lasting bulbs, and long battery
life. Can be brighter than incandescent bulbs, without the glare of
the brighter bulbs.
Halogen/Xenon and other brighter bulbs - Potentially very bright
light. Can drain batteries quickly.

There are some extremely lightweight LED head and hand lamps on the
market. I've used a Petzl Tikka headlamp for the past couple of
years. It's extremely lightweight; I hardly know that it's there. The
batteries last for months. However, it isn't bright enough for me.
It's OK for hiking and running slow (and it's great for doing stuff
around the campsite at night), but I need a brighter light to run
fast on trails.

The newest line of lights includes combination set ups: fuel
efficient LED, and bright halogen/xenon bulbs in single units. These
allow you to switch settings, using the brighter lights when needed,
and the lower output lights to save battery life at other times.

I have just bought a light for mountain biking at night that I will
also use for trail running. It's extremely bright, has multiple
settings, and can be mounted on a headband. It's a little heavier,
and requires me to carry a battery pack in a pack or pocket, my
ability to navigate technical terrain with a brighter light should
more than make up for the extra weight.

The big companies are Petzl, Black Diamond, and Princeten-Tec. But
there are other good lines out there. Check them out in stores and
online.

Where to buy? Any good outdoor shop. Look at some of the independent
stores such as Mountain Miser (Englewood), Bent Gate (Golden), and
Neptune Mountaineering (Boulder), as well as the chains: REI, EMS and
Galyans. Also check for deals online at sites like Campmor, Sierra
Trading Post.

There is no single best light. You have to figure out what's best for
youself based on: night vision, how you intend to use it, comfort,
and price.

++++++++++

If you want to run trails over the winter, you will have to run on
ice. The solution that I like best is a "screw shoe." Simply stated,
it involves screwing #6 hex head, sheet metal screws point up. That's
right. I said point up. It's the head that provides the traction. You
shouldn't feel the point. Use a few screws across the ball of the
foot, and the back, center and outside of the heel, the places where
you land and push off from. Use 1/4" or 3/8" in the front, and 3/8"
or 1/2" in the heel. Put them in the lugs, or high ridges of your
soul. Be careful of placement if you have Nikes, Asics, or other
shoes with gel/gas pockets. It won't ruin your shoes. The holes will
seal up quickly in the spring. If you're worried, use an old pair of
shoes.

For more details, view the article on Matt Carpenter's site:
http://skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm

Many of us train and race on snowshoes over the winter. It's a lot of
fun. It's a great workout. There's a very short learning curve. I'll
include the snowshoe race schedule in the weekly message. The races
are a lot of fun. It's easy to jump in as a beginner. At almost every
race, a significant number of the participants will walk all or most
of the race. Before you buy, many of the races will have free loaners
available. Also, I've led several beginner outings with free loaners
the past few years. I expect to do this again, but it depends on the
dealers. Stay tuned.

Join me for a run this Tue night, 11/18, in the DTC.

Meet at 6:00pm, at the elementary school, around the corner from Cherry
Creek High, across from Cherry Creek State Park. This is the same place
the Phidippides group meets for their track workouts during the lighter
months. It's on Dayton, just south of Union and the dam road. See the
attached map (scanned for viruses before sending).

We'll run on dirt trails in Cherry Creek State Park. These are
non-technical (i.e., not rocky), mostly flat trails. The first ~2mi on
the out-and-back course are on a wide, smooth, dirt path. Then there's
a quick hop on the road, then onto a fairly smooth single track. We're
near the new moon, so head/hand lights are recommended. We'll run for
about an hour, or as long/short as the group wants.

Adam

+ Thursday evening run: Green Mtn. (T=3, P=2-4) Bear Creek Lake Park
(if rain/snow)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Beaver Brook Trail/Genesee
+ Sunday long run: North Table Mtn.
+ Trail races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run will be at Green Mtn. (T=3, P=2-4) if it isn't too
wet. Otherwise it will be at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2). Info
for both locations is below. The main group will start at 6:15pm. Linda
Jagger has agreed to lead an early, daylight group at 4:30pm. You can
contact her at lindajagger@....

Green Mtn Directions: From Denver, take 6th ave to the end of the
freeway. Turn onto Colfax or US 40. Go about 1 mile, just under the
C-470 extension, then turn left at the light, Rooney Road. The lot is
about 1 mile ahead on the left.

From the south, take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west, then take the first
right on Rooney Road, before you enter Morrison, by the Conoco station.
About 2.5 miles up, the road ends at Alameda. Go left, cross over
C-470, then take the next right onto Rooney Road again. The lot is
about 1/2 mile up on the right.

Green Mtn Route: There are several options up and back down. Please
choose the appropriate route for your speed to run about 1:00.

Start up the path and across the pedestrian bridge over C-470. Take the
far right dirt trail. Follow the trail around the south side of the
mountain.

There's a junction in ~0.75mi (GM1). Go right (left takes you back to
the start; straight climbs up) and continue around the mountain. The
trail takes you next to a small lot and the road at ~1.8mi. There's
another trail up at ~2.25mi (GM2). You'll see (in the daylight) a fence
about 50 yards up on the left. Do not go left here. Continue to the
Utah trail junction (UTAH) at ~3mi. This is the first option.

Option 1A: Slow and medium runners should go left here, or see 1C
below. Go up for ½mi then go left at the trail junction (GM5). Go up
the trail another 1mi to the service road (GM6). Go left and continue
to option 5.

1B: Go straight and continue around to the Florida lot (FLA).

1C: If you want to avoid any big climbs, continue to the Florida lot,
or until you've been out 30-35 min, and return the same way.

Option 2A: At the large, dirt, Florida lot, go left onto the single
track at the north end of the lot. It merges with 2B about ½mi up, at a
90 degree left turn. Continue up to option 3.

2B: Go straight through the north end of the lot for ~¼mi. Go left up
the next trail. It merges with 2A.

Above the next rise after 2A&B merge, there's a single track on the
left (GM3).

Option 3A: Go left on the single track. After ~0.3mi, go right at the
junction onto the Utah trail. Continue another 1mi up to the service
road. Go left, then continue to option 5.

3B: Continue climbing up the ridge to the towers (Radio Towers). This
is a little shorter than 3A, unless you take 4B.

Option 4A: Go left at the towers and follow the service road another
mile, over the top of Green Mtn, to option 5.

4B (not marked on map): Go right at the towers and start down the ridge
for about 50 yards. Go left onto a single track. This parallels the
service road heading NW. Merge back up to the service road. Go right
and continue to option 5.

Option 5A: The service road takes a sharp (GM7), left turn and heads
down steeply. Stay on the road. It's about another mile to the finish.

5B: Stay straight onto a single track. After ¼mi (GM8), Go left onto a
single track. This rocky trail winds its way down the side of the
mountain. After ~1mi, go left at the saddle down a steep trail. This
goes over a couple of rises, then merges back with the service road. Go
right and continue another 0.4mi to the finish. 5B is ~.75mi longer
than 5A.

Bear Creek Lake Park Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west.
Take the first right at Rooney Rd, then an immediate right into the
dirt lot, across from the Conoco Station. Meet in the lot. The run
starts by taking the bike path across Morrison Rd into the park. If the
weather/roads are bad and you're coming from the north, don't take
C-470. Follow the above directions to Green Mtn via Colfax/US40. Then,
continue south past Green Mtn ½ mi to Alameda. Go left, cross C-470,
then make a right back onto Rooney Road. Continue south ~2.5mi to the
lot.

BCLP Route: The run starts by taking the bike path across Morrison Rd
into the park. Run under C-470. Jog right across the first bridge, then
an immediate left onto a single track. Run through the picnic area,
parking lot, cross the road, and pick up the trail on the other side.
Continue following the path east along the south side of the creek,
past the exercise stations. About 1.75mi from the start, the path
curves right. Look for a single track on the left heading over a small
hill. This leads to a large, dirt, parking lot. Cross the lot, staying
to the right side. Head through the large rocks on the other side of
the lot, then down the hill to the creek. Cross the creek, then go left
on the trails.

Option 1A: At the base of the mountain, slower runners should go left
on the paved road across the base of the damn.

Option 1B: Climb the single track up the mountain. At the top, follow
the single track on the left. After ~1/4 mile, go left at the fork
dropping down, and to the road atop the dam road. Go around the fence,
then left across the top of the dam. At the north end, make a sharp
left down the road. Go into the lot at the bottom of the road. By the
bathrooms, pick up a single-track trail. Take it down towards the lake,
then go right and follow 2A below.

Option 2A: At the fence across the road, go left on the single track.
Follow it west along the north edge of the lake. Cross the parking lot,
go through the trees, then either: go left and follow the trail back;
go right out to the road on the right and follow 2B back.

Option 2B: Continue through the gate and to the road at the north end
of the dam. Go left, and take it all the way back, past the entrance
gate, to the bike path under C-470.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at the Beaver
Brook Trail in Genesee. The run starts at 8:30am sharp. Meet at the
park-n-ride lot, on the north side of I-70, at the Genesee exit (#254),
the buffalo overlook.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Sometimes a few people
will meet early or continue after the run to get in more mileage. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead these
runs, so please don't ask me the questions. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to:

Join me for a long run this Sunday (weather permitting) at North Table
Mtn at 8:30 am. We will explore a potential new Thursday night trail. I
know in theory where it goes (it's different than we've run in the
past), I just haven't done it yet. I'm guessing that it will take about
1:30. I plan to bring my mtn bike, so bring yours if you'd like to join
me for a ride afterwards at N. Table, S. Table, Green, Apex, or
wherever else we decide.

Note: All abilities are welcome. I don't plan to wait for slower
runners, but I will explain a modified route that I do know, and that
should be easy to follow.

Directions: From the intersection of hwys 6, 58 & 93 in Golden, go
north on hwy 93 towards Boulder. Go ~1.4mi and turn right at the first
street after Golden Gate Canyon, Pine Ridge. Go 2 short blocks to the
end, then make a left on Wyoming. After Wyoming curves right, the
parking lot for the trailhead will be on your left.

Directions
From Denver, take 6th ave to the end of the freeway. Turn left at the first light, Colfax or US 40. Go about 1 mile, just under the C-470 extension, and turn left at the light, Rooney Road. The lot is about 1 mile ahead on the left.

Go left, cross over C-470, then take the next right onto Rooney Road again. The lot is about 1/3 mile up on the right.

Route
See the map below. I did my best to accurately mark the trails. They may not be exact, but they are pretty close.

Start at the Rooney Road lot (S). Cross the bridge and take either of the trails to the right. They merge in about 2/3-mi (GM1). This is the first left. Don't go up here. Follow the rolling trail around the south side of the mountain.

Beginner-Go to the Florida lot (FLA), or 35 min out, and back. This avoids any of the major climbs.

Intermediate-Continue past the 2nd left (GM2), 2.25mi, to the Utah trailhead (UTAH), 3.0mi. Go left up the trail. At the fork (GM5), 1/2-mi up, go left. Continue another mile to the service road (GM6). Go left on the road, follow it over the top, around the sharp left turn (GM7), then down to end.

Advanced-Continue to the Florida lot (FLA). Go left up the hill from there. Take a left where the Expert trail merges and go up the next steep pitch. At the next flat section, look for a trail on the left (GM4). Take that to the Utah trail split (GM5). Stay right up to the service road (GM6). Go left and follow the Intermediate route back to the start.

Expert- At the Florida lot, continue north through the lot for another 1/3-mi. Then take the next left up the steep hill. After the trails merge, go up the next steep pitch, at the next flat section, look for a trail on the left (GM4). Take that to the Utah trail split (GM5). Stay right up to the service road (GM6). At GM7, go straight on a rocky, flat single track for 1/4-mi (GM8). Go left and take the trail down. At a saddle, go left down a steep hill. Follow the trail down and up twice, merge back with the service road, then go right to the end.

+ Thursday evening run: Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=2, P=3)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Evergreen Lake House
+ Trail races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run is at Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=2, P=3). We
will meet here snow or moonlight. The main group will start at
6:15pm. Linda Jagger has agreed to lead an early, daylight group at
4:30pm. They will run the same route. You can contact her at
lindajagger@....

Directions: Meet at the dirt turnout, at the first hairpin turn, just
above the pillars. Take hwy 6 to Golden. Turn west at Lookout
Mtn/19th ave. The turnout is about 3/4-mile up, just above the
pillars. There's a porta-potty in the small park on the left, below
the pillars.

Route: There are road and trail options. The directions below send
everyone up on the trail, with the return on the road. You can take
the trail down. If you don't feel comfortable on trails at night,
take the road both ways. It's a good hill workout and there isn't
much traffic. The road options are longer than the trails.

Up: Run up the road about 1/2-mi, then look for the trail on the
left. Head up the trail for about 2 mi. Cross the road at Windy
Saddle and continue along the trail on the other side. In another 1/4-
mi, go left at the next trail junction. Do not take the hiker only
Beaver Brook trail. There's another trail junction about a mile
further up. The faster runners, should take a sharp right and
continue about another 1/3-mi to the Boettcher Mansion. Intermediate
runners taking the road back should stay left and continue ~1/3 mi to
Lookout Mtn Park. Slower runners may want to turn and return to Windy
Saddle before this point.

Return options: Judge your time accordingly so that will get back to
the finish in about an hour. There are two options from the Boettcher
Mansion. The shorter option is to go left on the road to Lookout Mtn
Rd. Then go left to Lookout Mtn Park. For a longer option, take the
trail (or road) around the right side of Boettcher Mansion. Go left
at Lookout Mtn rd and continue to the park.

From the park, there are two options. Go left into the park and look
for a single track; or return on the single track if you came up the
trail. If you took the trail up to the park, return on the same
trail. Go right at the next two trail junctions and continue to Windy
Saddle. Or, take the windy Lookout Mtn road down. From Windy Saddle,
you can either take the trail or road down.

Continue through Bergen Park, past Elk Meadow, about 6 miles, down
the hill to the lake. At the bottom of the hill, just before the road
turns left at the lake, turn right onto Upper Bear Creek Rd. Go about
1/4 mile and turn left into the parking lot.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Sometimes a few people
will meet early or continue after the run to get in more mileage.
They usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead

Directions: From C-470 south: Take the Morrison exit, hwy 74. Go west
through the town of Morrison. Just west of the town, look for the
signs for Red Rocks. I believe it's the first right after the light
at hwy 8. Follow the signs to the Trading Post.

From I-70, take exit 259, the Morrison/Golden/Red Rocks exit. Go
south, down the hill, for about 1 mile. Turn right into Red Rocks
park and follow the signs to the Trading Post.

There are road and trail options. For detailed route description and

Road: Go left on the road just above the Trading Post and below the
ampitheatre. Follow it down to the next intersection at the bottom of
the hill. Take a sharp left and follow the winding road up the hill.
At the next intersection, go left back to the Trading Post and repeat
the loop. Or, stay straight for about ½ MI to the dirt road. Go left
on the dirt road. At the paved road, go left again up the hill. At
the 3-way junction, either go left to the Trading Post and repeat all
or part of the loop. Or, for more go right. Take the next right and
go up to the observation point parking lot and back. You can also go
straight, through the tunnel, to the upper RR lot and return. Repeat
all or parts of the route for more distance.

Trail: Start up the hill from the Trading Post to the 3-way
intersection. Slower runners go right on the road. Faster runners,
take a sharper right onto the single-track trail, down the hill,
curve left, and meet up back at the road. Go up the Red Rocks trail
into Matthews Winters park, left from the road, straight from the
trail. About 2/3 mi up the trail, slower runners stay right on the
Red Rocks trail. Continue out as far as you want, then return the
same way. Faster runners go left and climb the Morrison Slide trail.
This climbs up to, across the plateau, then down the other side to
rejoin the Red Rocks trail. Take a sharp right and return on the Red
Rocks trail. When you come back to the road, either go right on the
road, or straight and return via the single track trail. At the 3-way
intersection, you can add more distance by going up to either or both
of the upper lots (see road route description above).

I am gathering friends for a weekend trip to Moab, Nov. 7-9. It's a
chance to get away and play - road and mtn bike, trail run, climb,
paddle, etc. - before the snow falls. All are invited.

There are several lodging options. I will staying at Red Valle Homes.
They have mobile homes. They can easily sleep 8+ people, with
kitchens, hot tubs, and more. It's in the heart of Moab, close to
markets, restaurants and trails. I've stayed there before. It'll
probably cost around $30/person for the weekend, depending on how
many people we get.
http://www.redvallehomes.com/

Others are planning on camping. There are numerous sites near town.
Some are free; others are pay. Mike and Kasey Robbert will coordinate
people who want to camp.

There are many other lodging options available there.

I expect most people will drive out sometime Friday afternoon or
evening - it's a 5-6 hr drive - and return Sunday night. Some of us
may decide to stay until Monday. I know some are planning to run the
Rim Rock race in Grand Junction on Saturday. Getting there is on your
own, although I will help arrange car pools if there is any interest.

There are no organized activities. We'll make it up once we're there,
or you are free to do what you want.

That's all the plans and info there is.

If interested, please reply to runahill@.... Leave the subject
line as is. Let me know if you prefer Red Valle, camping, or will
make other plans.

This is the last run of the daylight savings time season. The weather
is great. This is an easy trail. Let's make it a great run and
turnout. And, please join us for dinner afterwards to celebrate our
4th season.

The runs will continue over the winter. You'll need a light. We'll
still run some of the trails when the conditions are good. We'll hit
also some different locations at times - some paved, and some more
urban. Make sure to join us for our annual X-mas lights run in the
neighborhoods around Wash Park the last Thursday before X-mas.

This Thursday's run is at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2). The main
group will start at 6:00pm. A smaller, less formal group sometimes
starts at 5:30pm. We will meet here rain or shine.

Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west. Take the first right
at Rooney Rd, then an immediate right into the dirt lot, across from
the Conoco Station. Meet in the lot.

"Civil Twilight" is at 6:37pm. This is an easy run, and everyone
should be able to get most of the trail part done before it gets dark.

Route: The run starts by taking the bike path across Morrison Rd into
the park. Run under C-470. Jog right across the first bridge, then an
immediate left onto a single track. Run through the picnic area,
parking lot, cross the road, and pick up the trail on the other side.
Continue following the path east along the south side of the creek,
past the exercise stations. About 1.75mi from the start, the path
curves right. Look for a single track on the left heading over a
small hill. This leads to a large, dirt, parking lot. Cross the lot,
staying to the right side. Head through the large rocks on the other
side of the lot, then down the hill to the creek. Cross the creek,
then go left on the trails. At the base of the mountain, go left on
the paved road across the base of the damn.

Option 1: Continue through the gate and to the road at the north end
of the dam. Go left, and take it all the way back, past the entrance
gate, to the bike path under C-470.

Option 2: At the fence across the road, go left on the single track.
Follow it west along the north edge of the lake. Cross the parking
lot, go through the trees, then either: 2A) Go left and follow the
trail back; 2B) go out to the road on the right and follow it back.

+ Thursday evening run: Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=2, P=3)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Golden Watershed
+ Trail races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Volunteers needed: State HS XC meet 10/25
+ Weekend in Moab
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run is at Chimney Gulch/Lookout Mtn (T=2, P=3). The
main group will start at 6:00pm. A smaller, less formal group
sometimes starts at 5:30pm. We will meet here rain or shine.

"Civil Twilight" is at 6:47pm. Everyone should be able to get up the
trail before it gets dark, and there's an option to finish on the
road, rather than on trails. So, don't worry if you don't have a
light. However, bring a light if you have one and want to stay on
trails.

Route: Run up the road about 1/2-mi, then look for the trail on the
left. Head up the trail for about 2 mi. Cross the road at Windy
Saddle and continue along the trail on the other side. In another 1/4-
mi, go left at the next trail junction. Do not take the hiker only
Beaver Brook trail. There's another trail junction about a mile
further up. The faster runners, and everyone staying on the trail,
should take a sharp right and continue about another 1/3-mi to the
Boettcher Mansion. Intermediate runners taking the road back should
stay left and continue ~1/3 mi to Lookout Mtn Park. Slower runners
should turn before this point.

Return options: Judge your time accordingly so that if you don't have
a light, you can get back to the road (either at the finish, Windy
Saddle, Lookout Mtn Park, or Boettcher Mansion). With a light, for
all but the fastest runners, return the same way. For the faster
runners, there are two options from the top. At Boettcher Mansion,
the shorter option is to go left on the road to Lookout Mtn Rd. Then
go left to Lookout Mtn Park. For a longer option, take the trail
around the right side of Boettcher Mansion. Go left at Lookout Mtn rd
and continue to the park.

At the park, go left into the park and look for a single track. If
you took the trail up to the park, return on the same trail. Go right
at the next two trail junctions and continue to Windy Saddle. Or,
take the windy road down. From Windy Saddle, you can either take the
trail or road down.

The road options are longer than the trail.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at the Golden
Watershed. The run starts at 8:30am sharp.

Directions: Take the Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit 252 from I-70.
This is one of the prettiest places in the area to
run.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Sometimes a few people
will meet early or continue after the run to get in more mileage.
They usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't lead
these runs, so please don't ask me the questions. For more info about

+ Thursday evening run: Green Mtn. (T=3, P=2-4)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Mt. Evans Wildlife Refuge
+ Trail races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Volunteers needed: State HS XC meet 10/25
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run is at Green Mtn, Rooney Road lot (T=3, P=2-4).
The main group will start at 6:00pm. A smaller, less formal group
sometimes starts at 5:30pm. We will meet here rain or shine. "Civil
Twilight" is at 6:57pm. The run is about an hour. So, there should be
time to finish the run before it gets dark.

Directions: From Denver, take 6th ave to the end of the freeway. Turn
left at the first light, Colfax or US 40. Go about 1 mile, just under
the C-470 extension, and turn left at the light, Rooney Road. The lot
is about 1 mile ahead on the left.

From the south, take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west, then take the
first right on Rooney Road, before you enter Morrison, by the Conoco
station. About 2.5 miles up, the road ends at Alameda. Go left, cross
over C-470, then take the next right onto Rooney Road again. The lot
is about 1/3 mile up on the right.

Route: There are several options up and back down. Please choose the
appropriate route for your speed to finish at 7pm. Once you get to
the top, you follow a wide service road to the finish. The last
stretch is steep, but it's not very technical, so it's not bad as it
gets dark.

Start up the path and across the pedestrian bridge over C=470. Take
the far right dirt trail. Follow the trail around the south side of
the mountain.

There's a junction in ~0.75mi. Left takes you back to the start.
Straight goes up. Don't go up here. Go right and continue around the
mountain. The trail takes you next to a small lot and the road at
~1.8mi. There's another trail up at ~2.25mi. You'll see a fence about
50 yards up on the left. Do not go left here. Continue to the Utah
trail junction at ~2.8mi. This is the first option.

Option 1A: Slow and medium runners should go left here. Go up for ½mi
then go left at the trail junction. Go up the trail another 1mi to
the service road. Go left and continue to option 5.

1B: Go straight and continue around to the Florida lot.

1C: If you want to avoid any big climbs, continue to the Florida lot,
or until you've been out ~30 min, and return the same way.

Option 2A: At the large, dirt, Florida lot, go left onto the single
track at the north end of the lot. It merges with 2B about ½mi up, at
a 90 degree left turn. Continue up to option 3.

2B: Go straight through the north end of the lot for ~¼mi. Go left up
the next trail. It merges with 2A.

Above the next rise after 2A&B merge, there's a single track on the
left.

Option 3A: Go left on the single track. After ~0.3mi, go right at the
junction onto the Utah trail. Continue another 1mi up to the service
road. Go left, then continue to option 5.

3B: Continue climbing up the ridge to the towers. This is a little
shorter than 3A, unless you take 4B.

Option 4A: Go left at the towers and follow the service road another
mile, over the top of Green Mtn, to option 5.

4B: Go right at the towers and start down the ridge for about 50
yards. Go left onto a single track. This parallels the service road
heading NW. Merge back up to the service road. Go right and continue
to option 5.

Option 5A: The service road takes a sharp, left turn and heads down
steeply. Stay on the road. It's about another mile to the finish.

5B: Stay straight onto a single track. After ¼mi, Go left onto a
single track. This rocky trail winds its way down the side of the
mountain. After ~1mi, go left at the saddle down a steep trail. This
goes over a couple of rises, then merges back with the service road.
Go right and continue another 0.4mi to the finish. 5B is ~.75mi
longer, and much more technical than 5A. This trail is hard to do in
the dark.

Wildlife Refuge. The run starts at 8:30am sharp.

Directions: Take the Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit 252 from I-70.
Continue through Bergen Park, past Elk Meadow, about 6 miles, down
the hill to the lake. At the bottom of the hill, just before the road
turns left at the lake, turn right onto Upper Bear Creek Rd. Go about
6mi up the road to where it turns left, goes over a small hill, and
comes to a junction of dirt roads. Turn right and go ~2mi up the dirt
road. Look for a fork on the left, and a sign to the Wildlife
Refuge/Elk Preserve. Go left for ~1mi. The last 1/4 mile is very
steep and windy. Park where it levels out, by the bathroom.

Bring you mountain bike and join me for a ride after the run, weather
permitting.

The ERC runs are usually about an hour long. Sometimes a few people
will meet early or continue after the run to get in more mileage.

+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Cougar 5k run
+ Trail races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Volunteers needed: Danielesque run 10/4, State HS XC meet 10/25
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities
+ Copper Canyon runs

We will START at 6:00PM for the last 4 weeks of daylight savings time.
This will give us a little more daylight to run in.

As the weather changes, be prepared for last minute changes in the run
location. I'll provide an alternate, wet weather, run location each
week.

++++++++++

This Thursday's run is at South Table Mtn (T=2-3, P=2). The main group
will start at 6:00pm. A less formal group sometimes starts at 5:30pm.
We will meet here rain or shine. "Civil Twilight" is at 7:08pm

Directions: Meet at the NREL visitors' lot. Take I-70 to Denver West
Blvd. Go north to the first steeet. Turn left. Go 2 blocks to the NREL
lot.

This is a fairly easy run, but finding the route can be difficult. It's
a short climb to the top of the plateau, and the top is fairly flat,
although rocky in spots. However, there are few landmarks and NO trail
signs. Please stop and pay attention to critical junctions on your way
out. You've been warned!

Route: Head up the single track from the lot. Stay left at the fork
just after the start. About 1/4-mile later, just before the top, make a
sharp right. At the top, head north towards the phone lines. At the
north end of the plateau, go left. You've only gone ~3/4 mile. REMEMBER
THIS TURN FOR THE WAY BACK!

Follow the jeep trail to the west. Stay north of the paved road (it's a
CDOT test track). If you get there by mistake, head north until you
find the trail. At no time should you cross the paved CDOT test track.
You will pass by an E-W fence line, then cross a N-S fence line. A
short distance later, stay right at the fork. Follow the trail around
the small hill until it meets a larger jeep road. REMEMBER THIS TURN
FOR THE WAY BACK!

Bear right and head west towards the power lines.* Depending on time,
continue past the power lines, down the hill to the far western edge of
the plateau, then up the "Golden Stairs" to a rock perch overlooking
the town of Golden. Head back the same way.

* For an alternate, slightly longer route for the faster runners: Near
the start of the jeep road, go right. Follow the trail out to the
northern edge. Follow the trail to the west, then south, take a right
back to the west, then head down the hill to the "Golden Stairs."
Return via the direct route, past the power lines via the jeep road as
above.

"Dear Copper Canyon runners,

I appreciate the interest from any and all of you who would like to
come down and make this adventure run with me; either the November 23
run, or the March 7 run; [or both!]

Be aware that the $100 donation that I am requesting goes to appearance
and prize money, as well as food
and lodging for any Tarahumara runners [Raramuri] who may be
participating. The more paid entries that we receive by October 20, the
more Raramuri will be running with us. I will be announcing the prize
money structure in Tarahumara land after the October 20 entry deadline,
when I know just how much funding is available for this. YOU and
myself, our KORIMA[sharing], are the solo primary sponsors of this
event, along with Huaraches [tarahumara home-made sandals] and Pinole
[corn powder]!

I will be donating my guide services as well as directing and
organizing this event in the hopes that enough of you all will help me
this time with the prize money to make this event a success and ensure
it's continuity. As some of you know, last race I did it all, and this
was an honor [see article: "CREATE

Gracias para la korima and let's have a wild run; Andale!

Whoopee! We now have over 700 members on the e-group. I wonder where
everyone is, but thankfully, you all don't show up on Thursdays. That
would be quite a sight - hundreds of us bounding up the trail.

++++++++++

This Thursday's run is our monthly time trial at Lair 'O The Bear
Park (T=2-3, P=3). The main group will start at 6:15pm. A less formal
group sometimes starts at 5:30pm.

Directions: Take C-470 to the Morrison exit, hwy 74. Go west, through
Morrison, and continue about 4.5mi to the park entrance on the left.
Meet at the far, west end of the lot.

Route: Head west on the Creekside trail that follows the creek, up
the canyon, for about 1 mile. Look for a singe-track trail coming in
from behind you on the left. If you get to the chain across the
trail, or hwy 74, you've gone too far. It's about 100' before the
chain. Follow the Bear Creek Trail out and back as far as you want to
go. A couple of miles up, it crosses a few other trails. Feel free to
explore. Remember to stay on the Bear Creek Trail to get back to Lair.

No picnic. It gets dark too early. However, join us for dinner. We'll
probably go to a restaurant in Morrison.

++++++++++

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at the
Alderfer/3 Sisters (T=3, P=3). The run starts at 8:30am sharp.

Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70, to the main
light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming
from I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4

Park in the dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house. For
more details on the park, go to

* Oct 4 is the USATF state x-c championships in Boulder. Is there an
interest in putting together a man's and/or women's
DenverTrailRunners team(s)? I cannot do the race that day, but will
help organize the team(s). See the listing above for more details on
the race. Please let me know on Thursday, or send me a message.

Looking for company on a long weekend run? Want to carpool to a
mountain race, Incline Club run or other outing? Let me know and I'll
send out the word. Please send me specific information about where
and when you want people to meet, or how to contact you. Try to send
me the information a week in advance so I have time to get it into my
weekly message. Please don't wait for me to plan everything!

"Dear Copper Canyon runners,

I appreciate the interest from any and all of you who would like to
come down and make this adventure run with me; either the November 23
run, or the March 7 run; [or both!]

Be aware that the $100 donation that I am requesting goes to
appearance and prize money, as well as food
and lodging for any Tarahumara runners [Raramuri] who may be
participating. The more paid entries that we receive by October 20,
the more Raramuri will be running with us. I will be announcing the
prize money structure in Tarahumara land after the October 20 entry
deadline, when I know just how much funding is available for this.
YOU and myself, our KORIMA[sharing], are the solo primary sponsors of
this event, along with Huaraches [tarahumara home-made sandals] and
Pinole [corn powder]!

I will be donating my guide services as well as directing and
organizing this event in the hopes that enough of you all will help
me this time with the prize money to make this event a success and
ensure it's continuity. As some of you know, last race I did it all,
and this was an honor [see article: "CREATE
BEAUTY"].

Gracias para la korima and let's have a wild run; Andale!
Run free.

Micah [Caballo Blanco]"
