Back to our bread and butter, Green Mountain . We will be running from the Florida lot on Alameda at 5pm on Wed.

The Florida lot/trailhead is marked FLA on the map at the following link (WE DO NOT MEET AT ROONEY LOT!):

http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/GreenMtn.html .

I will be driving a Red 4Runner.  Route will be picked based on the group that shows up.  We run at a conversational pace and meet up along the trail at all trail junctions if we get spread out, no one gets left behind.  We usually go for an hour and do about 6 miles depending on how much climbing we do.

Come on out and get some more miles in, summer is just around the corner. Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have any questions.

Shad

Due to the snow, mud, and possible high water in the creek, we are moving the
run from Lair 'o the Bear.

Instead, this week's run is at Green Mtn. Meet in the Rooney Road lot. The early
group meets at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm.

Run notes: If you are not familiar with the trails, please review the map in
advance (link below).

Directions: Take the new Alameda exit from C470. Go W, then take the next rt
onto Rooney Rd. The lot is 1/3mi up.

DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to keep the
group together for the first 5-10 minutes. After that, we spread out and
naturally form smaller sub-groups. We ask experienced runners to wait at key
intersections to help guide newer runners.

Bring warm and dry clothing for after the run.

Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. We will pick a nearby
restaurant at the end of the run.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live or work near
downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at
5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives.

This week's run is at Lair o' the Bear. The early group meets at 5:30pm; the
main group starts at 6:15pm. The location may change if we get a report that the
trails are too wet/muddy.

Run notes: This run is fairly straight forward; it's out-and-back on the same
trail (the fastest group is the only one that sometimes takes a side trail).
Please use your watch to determine when to turn around. It's faster coming back
downhill, so turn a few minutes after the half-way point in time (e.g., at ~35
min for a 60 min run). If you are not familiar with the trails, please review
the map in advance.

DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to keep the
group together for the first ~5 minutes, to the footbridge. After that, we
spread out and naturally form smaller sub-groups. We ask experienced runners to
wait at key intersections to help guide newer runners.

Bring warm and dry clothing for after the run. It cools off quickly in the
canyon.

Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. We will pick a nearby
restaurant at the end of the run.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live or work near
downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at

Due to this latest weather we got today, we will running again this Wed  at Bear Creek Lake Park if anyone is interested in joining us. We will be running from the gas station in Morrison at 5pm on Wed.

Directions were to meet: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west. Take the first right at Rooney Rd , then an immediate right into the dirt lot, across from the Conoco Station.  The road over the Hogback is now closed as a FYI.

Trailmap: http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/BearCreekLakePark.html

I will be driving a red 4Runner. We will be running for an 1 hour at a conversational pace and meet up along the trail if we get spread out, no one gets left behind.   If the trails are muddy we will do a road run around Bear Creek or over the road on the Hogback.   I maybe running shorter than the rest of the group due to tapering for a race this weekend.

Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have any questions and hope to see some of you there.

Apologies to those of you that might receive this multiple times because you are
in other discussion groups as well

--------------------------------

Registration is moving quickly with 37 runners signing up the first week from
CA, FL, GA, KY, SC and VA... and of course the bordering states OH, NY, MD and
WV. PA residents are excited to have a state championship trail race in their
backyard and are signing up rapidly.

Keep an eye on the 50K if you are thinking of entering that one as it is leading
the way in the registration of the three distances with 16 entries already - it
might fill up quickly.

Initial cap on entries:
50K - 75 runners
50 miler - 75 runners
100 miler - 100 runners

This race is very crew / family friendly with race HQ being at the beautiful new
Titusville Middle School. They can relax in the huge cafeteria and play games to
pass the time while you are on the trails, and enjoy indoor flush toilets in the
many restrooms that will be open to the race. Runners, family, crew, pacers can
make use of the showers in the locker room for a nominal fee of $5 to cover the
wonderful custodial staff that is giving up their weekend for the race. The
other crew-accessible aid station at the park office in Petroleum Center PA is
reached by paved roads - no dirt roads to get lost on in the middle of Saturday
night for the 100 / 50 mile crews.

Tenting next to the parking lot as well as sleeping on the gym floor are
inexpensive lodging alternatives.

Check out the elevation profiles of the major sections of the 50K loop on the
COURSE page of the race website:

   http://www.oilcreek100.org/Home/course

Note that the "difficulty" ratings were automatically assigned by Bones in
Motion (bimactive.com) , with 5 being the maximum. Much of the course is in the
3.6 to 4.0 range.

DNF shuttle vans will be running between the aid stations and race HQ where the
start, finish line, and aid station # 1 are - so no worries for runners
wondering how to get back to their vehicle at the start. These vans will also be
for volunteers in case you have family members that would like to work at one of
the aid stations and cheer you on when you come into it.

I hope to see you in October - in "the valley that changed the world" - the
birthplace of the oil industry in 1859.

The rescheduled Chatfield Double Dip trail race is this Sunday, April 26. Early registration is only $15, ending tonight online. If you're going to the DTR run tonight, I can take your apps there. Race day registration is only $20.

The course is 7.5mi, cross-country style. It's almost all on trails - a mix is twisty single track and wider paths, hard packed and some sandy sections, mostly flat with a few short but steep hills (~30' ea, ~150'-175' total), some log jumps, and two stream crossings.

The next race is May 17, 15km at Wellington Lake, ~8,100', 11mi S of Bailey.

What do you think? Are you ready to go ahead and have Scott update the website with the May 20 at 6:30 p.m. date/time for Sand Creek? If so, I'll ask him to update the Colorado Runner website and I'll update Active also.

As you suggested this morning, if you have new flyers printed, and stickers for the poster, we can get those distributed at the May 4th board meeting. I'll have club posters and flyers with the annual calendar ready to distribute as well - 4 birds with 1 stone?

This Thursday's run is at South Valley Park, in Ken Caryl. The early group meets at 5:30pm. The main group starts at 6:15.

Run Notes: We will run the hogback route, not the regular DTR route on our web site. The Grazing Elk trail is closed during the spring because of an elk herd. Read the course notes below. And, if you are not familiar with the trails, please review the map in advance. Maps are available at the trail head, and online at
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R19.htm

Start on the Coyote Song trail, up the hill from the gazebo. Continue as it curves right, and rolls down along the top of the meadow. Take the next left, after ~1/2mi, up the short, steep, Lyons Back Trail. Just past the top, go right at the fork. Remember this  point for the return. Run down the hill to the junction with the wide, Cathy Johnson Trail. From this junction, we will take different routes - short and medium taking a sharp left, long veering right.

Short: Take a sharp left up the CJ trail ~ ˝mi. At the next junction, before the trail crests, take a sharp left. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~4.25mi.

Medium: Take a sharp left up the CJ trail. Continue up the wide path over the crest, and down the other side to the road. Turn around and head back up the trail and over the crest. ~150m after the crest, take a right onto a single track. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~5.3mi

Long: At the CJ trail, stay right and follow the wide path down to Deer Creek Cyn Rd. Turn around and return back up CJ trail past the two trail junctions on the left, over the crest, and down to the road. Turn around and return up the trail and over the crest. ~150m after the crest, take a right onto a single track. Follow the trail rolling back up to the top of Lyons Back and the fork mentioned above. At the fork, take a right back down Lyons Back. At the bottom of Lyons Back, take a right and return to the start. ~6.1mi

Extra Long: To add extra, on the return, at the bottom of Lyons Back, go left ~0.4mi. Take a sharp right for .25mi. Take the next right at the bench onto Swallow Trail, rolling up back to the start. Adds ~ľmi to any of the routes above.

DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to keep the group together for the first 5-10 minutes. After that, we spread out and naturally form smaller sub-groups. We ask experienced runners to wait at key intersections to help guide newer runners.

Bring warm and dry clothing for after the run, even though it'll be warm, and even if you aren't going to dinner with us.

Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. We will pick a nearby restaurant at the end of the run.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live or work near downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at 5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives.

Before we choose a location for this Thursday's run, we need to find out about
trail conditions. DTR doesn't run on muddy trails. Almost everything is dry in
Denver. What are they like in the foothills? If you have direct knowledge,
please let us know if the following trails are dry, or close enough that they
are likely to be dry by Thursday afternoon:

Green Mtn, including down in the canyons
South Table Mtn.
North Table Mtn, including around the northern side
Matthews Winters/Hogback
South Valley (Ken Caryl)

Any other good ideas for Thursday's run?

We going to gamble a little here and going to try running this Wed 5pm at Mount Falcon from the East trailhead if anyone is interested in joining us.

Directions to the trailhead at the following link:

http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/MtFalcon-Morrison-dir.html

Map of the trails at the following link:

http://jeffco.us/jeffco/openspace_uploads/mtfalcmp.pdf

I will be driving a Red 4Runner and meet by the big trail sign next to the restrooms.  Route will most likely be up and down Castle to the picnic shelter (about 5 miles and 1700ft of gain), we may go all the way up to the upper parking lot if the group decides to together and the trail is in ok shape.  I am thinking that this main trail (Castle) should be ok with the amount of traffic, hard pack dirt surface it is and the heat we will be experencing the next few days.  We run at a conversational pace and meet up along the trail at all trail junctions if we get spread out, no one gets left behind.

Come on out and get some miles in. Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have any questions.

If any of you are online and were planning to go to the Colo Masters Sand Creek
5mi race this morning, don't. I just got a call from the race director. It's all
but impossible to get to the parking lot and start of the race. No word on when
or if it will be rescheduled yet.

Hello All,

I think I have everyone included on this email if not please forward as far as you need to.

Dan and I have just talked about the race and as of right now both of us WILL show up at the site tomorrow morning about 6:30 am.  We will check out the course and if it is obvious that it is a no go we will cancel.  If there is any question we will conduct the race with whatever resources we have on hand.  We have discussed alternatives but those decisions will have to be made tomorrow.

If any of you are bringing items that we intend to use at the race please do not worry if you can not make it.  I want to make this very clear.  If you think it is unsafe to drive tomorrow do not drive.  For the few runners who will show up (and there is always some) we will explain it all to them.   Dan and I only have a short distance to go.

We will just have to see what happens over night.

Feel free to call me on my cell at any time.  Again, we will be out at the course between 6:30 and 7:00 am.  My cell number is 720-333-0624.

Rob

This week's run is at Lookout Mountain/Chimney Gulch. The early group meets at
5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm.

We will meet at the lower parking lot by the park, about 200m below the pillars,
not in the dirt lot. This is to avoid any issues with the campus police.

Run notes: There are both road and trail options here. Sometimes we run up the
trail and down the road. If it rains/snows, we'll stick to the road. DTR tries
to avoids muddy trails. If you are not familiar with the trails, please review
the map in advance. This is an out and back route; please use time to determine
your turn-around point.

DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly, to keep the
group together for the first ~5 minutes, until we hit the trail. After that, we
spread out and naturally form smaller sub-groups. We ask experienced runners to
wait at key intersections to help guide newer runners.

Bring warm and dry clothing for after the run.

Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. We will pick
a nearby restaurant at the end of the run.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live or work near
downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at
5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives. The link below has a map.

*Why Do I Run?

Why do I run?
'Taint no mystery-
Wanna have a good
Medical History.
Doctor told me
Runnin' is great-
Helps them, blood cells
Circulate!
Great for the lungs,
Great for the ticker,
Can't nothin' getcha
In better shape quicker.
Feels so healthy
Feels so sweet,
Pumpin my arms
And flappin' my feet.
Moldin' my muscles
Firmin' my form,
pantin' like a pack mule,
Sweatin' up a storm,
Keeps me youthful,
Keeps me loose,
Tightens my tummy
And shrinks my caboose.
Beats being sluggish,
Beats bein' lazy-
Why do I run?
Maybe I'm crazy!!

Ben will be leading this week at Green Mountain.  I may or may not be there depending when I get back in town.  He will be running from the Florida lot on Alameda at 5pm on Wed.

The Florida lot/trailhead is marked FLA on the map at the following link:

http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/GreenMtn.html

Route will be picked based on the group that shows up.  We run at a conversational pace and meet up along the trail at all trail junctions if we get spread out, no one gets left behind.

Come on out and get some more base miles in, it will be race season before you know it. Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have any questions.

The Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club (RMOC) puts on 20 or so local meets every
year. One of them is this Saturday, at Chatfield State Park. Several DTR's are
regular orienteers including (English) John Crowther, Dave and Joe Black,
Kristen and Teo, Jan, and even me from time to time.

In orienteering, you use a map and compass, to find a series of spots
on varied terrain. It differs somewhat from the way you use a map and
compass in hiking and camping, in that orienteering uses much more
detailed maps, and you may be looking for something like a specific
tree or boulder.

A typical RMOC meet has a variety of courses ranging in difficulty and length
from those suitable for young kids, to one that might take you a couple of hours
to complete. The competition is very friendly and low-keyed; this is more like
training than competition. There will be beginner instruction to teach you how
to read a map, use a compass, and plan your route.

You don't need to be a fast runner. In fact, as you learn, it's often better to
be slow and take your time, rather than rush and make mistakes.

More info at http://www.rmoc.org/
