Looking for someone to lead a DTR group at Centennial Cone on any or
all of the following dates: 10/5 (this Sun), 10/11, 10/19, 10/25.

Centennial Cone is one of the newer OS parks in the Jeffco system,
with really nice trails, just ~10mi W of Golden. The basic loop is
either 12 or 16.5mi, depending on where you start. There are options
to do shorter out-and-back runs/hikes. Oct would be a good time to go
up there to get some good views, before it gets gold and icy.

Centennial Cone has an alternate use policy on weekends. Odd numbered
weekend days are hiker only.

"Leading" a DTR run is easy. It just means picking a time and meeting
place (we usually meet by the Loaf 'n Jug, just off Iowa and hwy 93,
in Golden, to carpool). It helps if you are familiar with the trails
so you can help people pick the appropriate routes to take for the
time they want to run. You do not have to be the fastest to lead a
run; i.e., you don't have to be the lead runner.

If interested, send a message to the group at
DenverTrailRunners@yahoogroups.com. Include the important details
(where and when to meet, approx run time and time of return, etc.). If
you want, you can contact me for more questions about the park first.

Ben and I are restarting the Wed runs at Green Mountain if anyone is interested in joining us. We will be running from the Florida lot on Alameda at 5pm on Wed. The Florida lot/trailhead is marked FLA on the map at the following link:

http://dtr.runuphillracing.com/Maps/GreenMtn.html . I will be driving a Red Blazer and I believe Ben has a silver Civic. We will be running 45 mins to 1 hour at a conversational pace and meet up along the trail if we get spread out, no one gets left behind. Come on out and join us. Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have any questions.

FYI-To decrease the chances of getting lost. At the intersection of Hwy 285 and Hwy 73, the former Safeway is now a Staples.

If you're coming from Evergreen (or similar), you can meet us in
Conifer, rather than driving down to Morrison. Take hwy 73 S from
Evergreen to hwy 285, by the Safeway. Go ~1/2 S on hwy 285, to the
park-n-ride lot on the right. We should be there a little between
8:45-9:00am. Or, you can meet us at Pine Valley Ranch, around 9:15am.

If you have any questions about directions, call me on Sunday morning,
303-870-0487.

Join us this Sunday at Buffalo Creek. You can run, mtn bike (some of us will be doing both), hike or fish.

The trails at Buffalo Creek are about the best in the state. There's a good mix of climbs, flat, and rolling terrain. Most of the trails are soft and smooth, so you can really fly, even on the steepest descents.

Meet at The Fort restaurant at 8:30am. We'll carpool to Pine Valley Ranch from there. It's about a 30 min drive.

The Fort is located at 19192 Highway 8, Morrison. Take hwy 285 to hwy 8, the first exit up from C470. The Fort is ~100 yards N of hwy 285. There's a large dirt lot along the E side of hwy 8.
http://www.thefort.com/
http://tinyurl.com/3lg2wv

We'll start at Pine Valley Ranch (http://jeffco.us/openspace/openspace_T56_R17.htm). The basic route is ~7.5mi, with options to go a longer. Please download the FS map (http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/psicc/publications/buffcrk.pdf).

Basic route: Start W on the Narrow Gauge trail, along the N side of the S Platte River. In ~200m, go left across the bridge. In another 1/4mi, stay right onto the Buck Gulch trail. We'll be coming back from the trail on the left. We'll stay together until here.* Buck Gulch climbs ~1,100' in ~2.5mi, on a smooth, double-track wide trail. At the the top there's a dirt road and FS kiosk. Go left there onto the Skipper Trail. Skipper is a very fun single track. Most of the trail is gently sloping downhill. Some of the descents are steep, but the footing is good most of the way down. There's a moderate climb ~2mi down. Stay left at the top of the climb and follow the trail back to the junction with Buck Gulch.* Go right there and retrace your steps back to the start - cross the bridge, then right.

For those wanting to run longer here's a brief description of some options. Bring the FS map and I can explain them in more detail on Sunday. All of the longer routes follow the basic route up Buck Gulch, then left on Skipper to the 4-way Strawberry Jack junction.^ From there:
  • Go straight across the junction onto the Homestead trail. You'll be coming back from the right. In ~2-2.5mi, take a right onto Charlie's Cut-off. Over the hill, take a right on the wide trail. This leads back to the 4-way junction in ~1/4mi.^ Continue straight onto Strawberry Jack, down to the start. ~11mi.
  • Take Homestead past Charlie's Cut-off (stay left), to Sandy Wash/Miller Gulch. Go right up Miller Gulch ~3mi. Take the first right, which leads down to the 4-way junction in ~1/2mi.^ Continue straight down to the start. Total ~15mi.
  • Stay left at Sandy Wash/Miller Gulch, onto Sandy Wash. This drops down to the Buffalo Creek Rd. Go right up the dirt road ~3mi. Lok for a single track on the right. The trail splits just up from the road. Go either way onto Baldy or Gashouse. They rejoin near the top. Continue up to Miller Gulch. Go right on the with path ~1/4mi. • Similar to the last route. Except, part way up the Buffalo Creek road, take the first left up Shinglemill, then right down Morrison Creek, back to the road. Then left up the road to Gashouse/Baldy. Total ~25mi.

Some of us are going to run the basic route, then mountain bike. We'll decide the mtn bike route on Sunday.

Remember to bring warm and dry clothing for after the run.

Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. At the end of the run, the group will pick a nearby restaurant.

DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly for the first several minutes. Once we're into the run, we'll spread out and tend to naturally form smaller sub-groups by pace. Please stop and regroup, at key intersections. Those of you familiar with the trails, please help lead/guide the sub-groups for the other runners.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live/work near downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at 5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives. The link below has a map.

A lot of DTRs have done Imogene. I'd like to get a variety of opinions to
Linda's questions below. We'll collect them, then post combined responses in a
week or so.
Adam

----------

I know Imogene has just happened. I'm thinking of doing it next yr. I
read the web site a bit. I think to get in its a lottery. I would
love to hear someone's first hand report, especially a first timers
thoughts about the experience. Or are there any web "trip" reports.

How much of the route is jeep road vs trail?? I've had some say that
its not that nice/scenic of a run...

Any suggestions for making it a "good", successful experience? Can
friends provide personal support, ie hand out clothing, food along
the trail?

Is there time limits? I enjoy running trails, but I'm not fast. Don't
do lots of running miles per wk. I'm more of a hiker-climb 13ers and
14ers every weekend, nearly all yr around. Done Pikes Marathon 6x, in
2007 up was 5:04, down 3:35. Also done Mt Evans rd race in 4:04 this
yr. If I could do similarly would I have a chance of meeting the
cutoffs? I dont know how to compare betwn the 3 races.

If you wish to reply directly, email me at lindajagger@...
Thanks.

Linda

To get to this week's Thursday run in Willow Springs... When you
take the Quincy exit off C-470, you will need to take a LEFT at the
end of the exit ramp. This is true regardless of whether you exited
C-470 from the north or the south.

Here's a reprint of the entire message, with corrected directions:

This Thursday is a run and potluck party at Christine, Rick,
Christophe and Bobbi's house in Willow Springs.

Meet at their house at 6:00pm, to drop off food, change, etc. The run
will start at 6:15pm sharp, so we can finish before dark and start
the
party. Sunset is at 7:04pm; Civil Twilight (dark) is at 7:30pm.

The run will be ~45-60 min. There will be both trail and road
options.
The trail routes are hilly. Christine, Rick, and/or Bobbi will guide
us. We will stop and regroup at key intersections. The road route is
gently rolling. There are no maps for this on the DTR site.

Party: The hosts will provide a main dish. DTR will provide plates,
utensils, cups, napkins, etc. Bring salads, drinks, desserts, side
dishes, etc., or just a smile. Please stick around even if you can't
bring food. We always have plenty of extra food.

Bring warm/dry clothing for after the run. Bring warm socks too. They
ask us to remove shoes inside the house.

Directions:
5939 Willow Springs Dr.
Take C470 to the Quincy exit.
From the N, go L at the end of the off ramp and head S.
From the S, go L at the end of the off ramp, over the hwy, and
continue S.
The road ends at Belleview. Turn R onto Belleview.
Go ~1.5mi up the hill
Just past the lake on the left then turn L on Willow Springs Drive.
*Go over several speed bumps, then stay L at the first fork on Willow
Springs Drive.
At the second fork/stop sign, the house is directly in front of you.
Turn L and park by the first driveway on the R, as far to the side of
the road as possible. The first few to arrive can park up the
driveway.

Alternate:
Take hwy 285 SW, ~2mi, to hwy 8, the first exit past C470. Turn right
at the first street, Willow Springs Road, just after the off ramp,
just past the big white mansion, just before The Fort restaurant.
Follow the road down the steep hill, under hwy 285, and back up the
other side, for ~1.4mi. Turn right at Willow Springs Drive. Then
follow the above directions.*

Running during the short days of winter usually requires that you run with lights.
Some things to consider:
-   Contrast gives you depth-perception
-   Peripheral vision avoids vertigo and tunnel-vision
-   Brightness gives you speed and confidence.
-   Weight/bulk
-   Battery life
-   Cost

Contrast is created by having light away from your eyes where you can see some shadow to create depth perception. The more sources of light you have, from different angles, the better the contrasts will stand out.
Peripheral vision is aided by stray light. Reflectors try to block stray light and direct it forward for greater range. Since runners need the most effective light about 6 feet in front of them, reflectors are usually counter-productive. What's good for a camp light is not good for running a trail.
That is, unless you’re trying to follow reflective trail markers. In those cases, you’re not just trying to see for foot-placement, but also route-finding. Some headlamps have selective beams from long-range reflective to short-range dispersed.

Head lights leave your hands free and shine where you are looking. However, the light directly over your eyes can create glare, reducing contrast.
Hand lights can be easily directed and reduce glare. However, it takes practice to keep the light's direction from swinging widely while still using your arms.
Multiple lights can add depth-perception by countering shadows caused by a single light.

Incandescent bulbs are last century’s technology. They eat batteries and burn out, especially when dropped.
LEDs usually last forever. There are regular LEDs (less than 1 watt) and “super-bright” LEDs (more than 1 watt). The brighter LEDs are much better but use batteries faster.
There are, however, lights that utilize both LEDs and xenon or halogen. The battery-eating xenon/halogen is usually surrounded by a reflector that gives you a very bright projecting light. This gives you the best of both worlds. Depending on the unit model, you may have several switch settings that allow you to choose the brightness of light and longevity of your batteries.

It’s better to have too much light than to have too little. Find the right level of brightness, weight, for the speeds and trails you want to run, and your own relative vision at night.
The closer your lighting is to your eyes – like a headlamp – the less the contrasts. This is because of the dancing shadows that give you a clue about how deep a hole is or how big a rock is. If the light is right next to your eyes, you’ll see no shadow. If the shadows are too dark (too much of a good thing), this may erode your confidence, making you slow down. Crisscrossing shadows give your eyes better perspectives.
Most headlamps can be converted to a waist or chest light.
If you’re only going to have one light, use it lower down for depth-perception. If you have a headlamp and a lower light, your headlamp should be the dimmer one to fill – but not obliterate – shadows created from your lower light(s).

Colored lenses severely diminish a bulb’s efficiency, but very bright-white light reduces the light-efficiency of your eyes (what’s called “night-vision”). Yellow, brown, and amber block blue light, which reduce haze and glare, and increase contrast making things clearer during speed sports.  Red light is well-known for retaining night-vision.

Also consider weight and bulk. Some headlamps have the batteries integrated into the light, which is smaller and lighter with no wires, but tend to be front-heavy. Headlamps with separate battery packs are balanced, but are heavier overall and have wires which may end up getting mangled or worn-out.

For short runs, rechargeable NiMH is great and saves plenty of money over the years.
Lithium is the other extreme, and is not rechargeable. It costs far more than any other battery but it runs longer too, and it’s immune to cold or going bad from sitting on the shelf. This may be a better choice for frigid winter runs.
Lithium batteries have recently been found to damage LEDs from overheating. They are not recommended in cool-to-hot weather. Only use them in the coldest environments where LEDs can’t reach critical temperatures, and you need the resilience of lithium.

Costs range from about $15 - $60. Headlamps tend to cost more than generic flashlights. The fancier the features (LEDs+halogen reflector+4 switch settings) can send the price over $50.

When shopping, you’ll see ratings for candlepower and/or lumens. The term “watts” refers to power usage and doesn’t translate directly into brightness. Candlepower is a linear measurement equal to a birthday candle one foot away. A lumen is a square foot of light one foot away from the same candle.

Some packaging shows a silhouette of the beam. This can help you decide. Is the design for long range (better for hiking/camping) or for shorter range (better for runners)?

The most popular brands are Petzl, Black Diamond, Princeton Tec, Gerber, and Brinkman, but you may find others that are also very good.

Places to shop are REI stores, REI.com & rei.com/outlet,
sierratradingpost.com, WildernessExchange (store or online), argear.com, gearzone.com, ems.com & ems.com/catalog, Runners Roost, Boulder Running Company, Bent Gate, Army/Navy Surplus, Kmart, Wal-Mart, Target, online, and at garage sales or Goodwill, ebay, amazon, craigslist.

Title:   Thursday Trail Run

Date:   Thursday September 11, 2008
Time:   5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Location:   Stegasaurus Lot, I-70 @ Red Rocks exit
Notes:   This week's run is on the Hogback, Red Rocks and Matthews Winters trails. The early group meets at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm.

Please refer to the driving directions, route descriptions and maps on the DTR web site. Meet at the Stegosaurus lot, at the base of the hogback trail. Bathrooms are located across the street, at the Matthews Winters trail head (we don't meet there because there's not enough parking). Please don't leave valuables visible in your car.

Run notes: Slower runners may have trouble finishing the loop before dark. Alternate routes are either running out-and-back to ROAD1 (this hogback section is very rocky), or starting the reverse, and running to MS1 or MW1 and back.

DTR runs are not races. We ask the faster runners to start slowly for the first several minutes. Please regroup with similarly paced runners at key junctions: ROAD1, RR1, MS1, MS2. Those of you familiar with the trails, please help lead/guide the sub-groups for the other runners.

Please be courteous and communicate with other trail users. Always stop and get off the trail for horses. Please alert other users if/when you want to pass, then wait for them to give you space (saying "trail" or "on you left" does not automatically give you the right of way). When you see/hear an approaching bike, please call out "bike up" or "bike back", and pass it along the line of runners.

Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run. At the end of the run, the group will pick a nearby restaurant.

Remember to bring warm and dry clothing for after the run.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live/work near downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at 5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives. The link below has a map.

Hi guys,
Our team is looking for one more runner to join team 'no handlebars' this weekend.  You would run 20 miles or so in three legs.
If anyone is interested please let me know.

Hello all my fellow trail runners. I'm here to remind all of you of the wonderful new trail race being held Oct 5th, 2008 near Fort Collins. The first annual Blue Sky Marathon and Half Marathon will be run on the trails of Horsetooth Mt Park and Devils Backbone as a benefit for Larimer Co Parks and Larimer Co Search and Rescue. Both courses will be run mostly on dirt single track with some dirt/gravel road mixed in. Due to a large number of requests we added on a half marathon option to be run on the same day, starting at 9am, while the marathon will start at 7am. Aid stations will be stocked with Clif bars, Succeed! drink mixes, and a variety of other snacks.

First male and female finishers in the marathon will be awarded a free physiology test from Boulder Performance Lab(a $195 value), additionally we will be randomly giving away free sessions with Colorado Physical Therapy Specialist, schwag from Lasportiva, and an assortment of other goodies. Title:   Thursday Trail Run

Date:   Thursday September 4, 2008
Time:   5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Location:   Wyoming Circle and Pine View Rd, Golden, CO
Notes:   This week's run is at N Table Mtn. The early group meets at 5:30pm; the main group starts at 6:15pm.

Please refer to the driving directions and route descriptions/maps on the DTR web site.
Start location - http://tinyurl.com/3r8ofy

Run Notes: We'll split up shortly after the start. Don't necessarily follow the people ahead of you.

Short: Take a left, up a steep trail, just past the water tank. This is the route indicated on the map. Later on, at REGRP2, you can go right instead. This keeps you atop the mesa. Continue to the E end of the mesa, the turn around and return to the start.

Intermediate: Continue past the above left, another ~200m, to the next trail junction. Take a sharp left, on a flat trail, back to the N.

Long: Continue S past this 2nd junction, another ~250m. Take a left, up a steep trail. After reaching the top, take a left on the wide path to rejoin the main path.

Those going around the N side, before the MIDWAY point, there's a right turn you need to take. Regroup at that junction. Regroup again after getting back to the top of the mesa.

DTR runs are not races. Once we're into the run, we spread out and naturally form smaller sub-groups. Please stop and regroup by subgroup at key intersections. We ask experienced DTRs to please help lead/guide those newer to the trail.

Remember to bring warm and dry clothing for after the run.

Carpool: There's a regular carpool group for those of you who live/work near downtown. Meet at the corner of 9th and Elati, by Denver West High School, at 5:25 each Thursday. We will alternate who drives. The link below has a map.
