Altitude Research Seeks Healthy Volunteers for a
Study of Acute Mountain Sickness
Altitude Research Center, Department of Surgery, Division of Emergency Medicine
Subject Requirements:
· 18-40 Years old, Male or Female
· No past head injury, seizures, regular migraine headaches or claustrophobia
· Non-pregnant
· Non-smoker
· Non-obese
· No current medical problems
· No regular medication or birth control pills
· Able to tolerate exercise up to 2 hrs on an stationary bicycle
· No travel at or above 7500 feet for approximately 2 months
The study involves a screening day of approximately 6 hours. Following this visit, there are three identical blocks of a baseline day at Denver altitude followed by a day at 16,000 feet in an altitude chamber. All visits include blood draws, exercise on a stationary bicycle, non-invasive brain circulatory measurements and a brain MRI. The baseline tests take about 6 hours, the chamber days 14 hours. You will perform two of these blocks with a separation of at least 3 weeks. You cannot go to or above 7,500 feet for 3 weeks before all baseline days. You will receive a placebo on one chamber visit or an FDA approved drug for altitude sickness on the others.
