TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Boettcher Mansion Nature Center
in Genesee. Meet there at 6:00pm.
Directions: Take I70 to the Lookout Mountain/Buffalo Bill exit, #256,
then follow large brown signs.
From Denver, take a right from the off ramp, then an immediate left on
the frontage road, US40.
Go ¾ mi to Lookout Mtn Rd, the 2nd street.
Turn right and go ~1.4mi
Turn left at Colorow and go ~1.2mi to the mansion.
Meet in front of the nature center.
From Golden and north: Take hwy 93 S to hwy 6 E, to Lookout Mtn
Rd/19th Street.
Turn right, W up the road. Follow the winding road ~5.5 miles up.
About ¼ mi after the road flattens out, just past the Buffalo Bill
museum, take the next right onto Colorow Rd.
Go ~3/4 mi to the mansion.
This is the same workout as two weeks ago. Run a clockwise loop on the
Meadow Loop trail. Start at the bottom of the hill, ~30 yards down
from the lower junction with the Forest Loop trail, by the log fence.
Run hard, along Meadow Loop, to the upper junction with Forest Loop.
Jog down the short connector trail to the start. We'll do 4-5 repeats;
about 4-5 min hard, with about a 1:30 jog in between. The footing is
good. It is relatively flat with a gradual rise at the start, a short
uphill in the middle, then a gentle drop and rise to the end. You can
leave water bottles, etc., at the lower junction, to use during the
workout. The trails are at ~7,500', so it should be cooler than down
in town.

These workouts are for runners of all abilities. (The only exception
is for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off.
You should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.) The group stays in a compact
area (e.g., short loop or out-and-back), so no one will get left
behind. We run for time, starting and finishing together. The route is
designed typically with the hard efforts on climbs and/or
non-technical terrain; descents and rocky terrain will be easy
efforts. The purpose is to combine track-like speed workouts with
power training for hills.
The speed workouts will take place every week, as long as there is
interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with the workout
info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Deer Creek. The main group will meet at 6:15pm*; the
early group at 5:30pm. *Deer Creek is a longer drive for most people.
So, we may delay the start 5-10 minutes.
Directions to Deer Creek Canyon Park: Take C-470 to the Kipling exit. Go south
on Kipling for less than 1/4 mile, then turn right, onto W. Ute Avenue. At the
bottom of the hill, bear right onto Deer Creek Canyon Road. Stay on Deer Creek
Canyon Road, following the brown signs for the park. Turn left onto Grizzly
Drive, then right into Deer Creek Canyon Park.
Run notes: This is one of our longer runs; 1:30-1:40. Plan or adjust
your route to finish no later than 8:00pm. If you start late, shorten
your run to finish with everyone else.
Tentative schedule:
8/2: Gudy Gaskill
8/9: North Table
8/16: Green Mtn.
8/23: Lair `o the Bear, picnic.
If you want to make up the time trial, we can talk this Thursday about
an alternate date. The schedule is flexible. I try to avoid scheduling
the time trial right before or after big races. I know a lot of people
are racing Georgetown-Idaho Springs, Pikes and Leadville.
