RAIN
Last Thursday, around 5:15pm, when people were calling me about the
run, it was raining at Falcon and Red Rocks. It was easier to redirect
the group to Red Rocks at that time, rather than try to move a large
group at the last minute. Even if the trail might have been fine.

Please don't run on wet or muddy trails. The impact creates ruts and
speeds erosion. It's not just puddles of water and mud, but when the
trails are even a little wet, they are softer and more prone to damage.

If you do find yourself on a muddy trail, please stay on the trail and
run through the mud and water. Don't run off the trail, on the
vegetation. This unnecessarily widens the footprint of the trail.
Also, please stay on official trails and avoid informal, or "social"
trails.

Trails get enough wear and tear already. There are so few wet days
here that it shouldn't be too much of a burden to save you
run/hike/ride for a dry day. As a general rule, DTR will always make
the conservative decision.

TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Mt. Falcon, UPPER lot. Meet at
6:00pm.

The workout will be a counter-clockwise loop of the Meadow and Castle
trails. We'll run hard from the low point on the Meadow trail, up
Castle, then left to the Meadow/Tower junction. Then, jog easily back
down to the low point.
The trails are at ~7,500'+, so it should be noticeably cooler than
down in town.

These workouts are for runners of all abilities. (The only exception
is for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off.
You should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.) The group stays in a compact
area (e.g., short loop or out-and-back), so no one will get left
behind. We run for time, starting and finishing together. The route is
designed typically with the hard efforts on climbs and/or
non-technical terrain; descents and rocky terrain will be easy
efforts. The purpose is to combine track-like speed workouts with
power training for hills.

The speed workouts will take place every week, as long as there is
interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with the workout
info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

THURSDAY RUN & RIDE
Run Location: Elk Meadow, LOWER LOT. The main group will meet at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: Please plan your run to be at Kendra's around 7:30. We'll
run in a counter-clockwise direction. From the lot, go right down the
hill, then left onto Painters Pause.

Short: Take every left turn; onto Founders; up Meadow View; across
Meadow View to Elk Ridge; down Elk Ridge; then down Sleepy "S" back to
the lot.

Intermediate: Stay on Painters Pause to the top of the meadow; left
onto Meadow View; through the trees all the way around to Sleepy "S";
down Sleepy "S" to the finish.

Long: Follow the intermediate route to the S end of Meadow View; go
right and run down Meadow to the Stagecoach, upper lot, 0.3mi; return
back up the Meadow trail; right on Sleepy "S" to the finish.

Mtn Bike: Meet at 5:10. We'll ride for about 55 min, in time to make
it back for the run at 6:15.

Potluck: At Kendra's, after the run. Kendra lives a short distance
from Elk (directions below). Things to bring: grillables, hot dishes,
fruit, green or pasta salads, side dishes, desserts, beer, wine,
sodas, juice. Be creative. You'll pass a King Soopers on the way to
Elk, and an Albertsons and Safeway on the way to Kendra's house. It's
OK to come even if you can't or forget to bring food. There's usually
plenty of extra food and drink.

Directions to Kendra's: From Elk Meadow, Go back to hwy 74, and turn
right. Continue on hwy 74 for another 2-2.5mi. After passing the
Safeway, as you are going downhill, take the second left onto Douglas
Park Rd (there's no sign). If you hit the lake, you've gone too far.
At the top of the hill, stay left at the first "Y", then take the next
right onto Pine Drive. Follow Pine for ~¾mi, around a big curve. As
you start going uphill, look for a fire hydrant on the left. Turn left
just before the fire hydrant, and head down the long driveway.
Kendra's house is at the bottom. Park anywhere.
27895 Pine Drive, Evergreen, 80439
(303) 679-3202

Tentative schedule:
7/26: Deer Creek
8/2: Gudy Gaskill
8/9: North Table
8/16: Green Mtn.
8/23: Lair `o the Bear, picnic.

If you want to make up the time trial, we can talk this Thursday about
an alternate date. The schedule is flexible. I try to avoid scheduling
the time trial right before or after big races. I know a lot of people
are racing Georgetown-Idaho Springs, Pikes and Leadville.
