TUESDAY SPEED
This week's speed workout will be at Boettcher Mansion in Genesee.
Meet there at 6:00pm.

Directions: Take I70 to the Lookout Mountain/Buffalo Bill exit, #256,
then follow large brown signs.
From Denver, take a right from the off ramp, then an immediate left on
the frontage road, US40.
Go ¾ mi to Lookout Mtn Rd, the 2nd street.
Turn right and go ~1.4mi
Turn left at Colorow and go ~1.2mi to the mansion.
Meet in front of the nature center.

From Golden and north: Take hwy 93 S to hwy 6 E, to Lookout Mtn
Rd/19th Street. Turn right, W up the road. Follow the windy road ~5.5
miles up. About ¼ mi after the road flattens out, just past the
Buffalo Bill museum, take the next right onto Colorow Rd. Go ~3/4 mi
to the mansion.

The workout will be clockwise on the Meadow Loop trail. Start at the
bottom of the hill, ~30 yards down from the lower junction with the
Forest Loop trail. Run hard, along Meadow Loop, to the upper junction
with Forest Loop. Jog down the short connector trail to the start.
We'll do 4-5 repeats; about 4-5 min hard, with about a 1:30 jog in
between. The footing is good. It is relatively flat with a gradual
rise at the start, a short uphill in the middle, then a gentle drop
and rise to the end. You can leave water bottles, etc., at the lower
junction, to use during the workout.
The trails are at ~7,500', so it should be cooler than down in town.

These workouts are for runners of all abilities. (The only exception
is for beginning runners or those coming back after a long lay-off.
You should build a good base, with lower effort, and gradually longer
runs, before you start doing speed work.) The group stays in a compact
area (e.g., short loop or out-and-back), so no one will get left
behind. We run for time, starting and finishing together. The route is
designed typically with the hard efforts on climbs and/or
non-technical terrain; descents and rocky terrain will be easy
efforts. The purpose is to combine track-like speed workouts with
power training for hills.

The speed workouts will take place every week, as long as there is
interest. Sometimes there will be a separate e-mail with the workout
info, Mon evening, or Tue during the day.

THURSDAY RUN
Run Location: Mount Falcon, LOWER LOT. The main group will meet at
6:15pm; the early group at 5:30pm.

Run notes: This is one of our regular Falcon time trials (TT). We do
this regularly as a way to track your progress through the season. The
TT course is ~2.5mi, ~1,400' uphill. The TT is only uphill. We do the
downhill easy. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you are. The times
have ranged from 22:45 to 55:00. We stagger the starts so that
everyone finishes at about the same time. We'll gather at the top,
collect the times, then, do a short, easy run, as a group, on the
upper trails, before heading back down.

Start times: Pick your start time (below) based on an average 10k
(flat road) pace, or your TT time from May. A lot of first timers
start earlier than necessary, then end up waiting quite a while at the
top for the rest of us to finish. Because of the staggered starts,
it's usually the faster runners who are among the last ones to finish.

10k calc: Start (after first group) – Pace/mi for 10km
0:00 – 10:00/mi
4:00 – 9:00/mi
8:00 - 8:00/mi
12:00 - 7:00/mi
15:00 - 6:00/mi

May's TT calc: If you were slower than 44:00, start at 0:00. Everyone
else, subtract your May time from 44:00. Example: If your May time was
38:25, then your start time should be 44:00 – 38:25, or 5:35.

Please bring a stopwatch. At the finish, please wait for everyone
under the gazebo. I (Adam) will carry up a pen and paper up (all that
extra weight) and record your times. Give me a minute or two to catch
my breath. If you start/leave early, please record your time on paper
left on my windshield (white Prius, lic plate RUNUPHL), or e-mail it
later. For the early group, Scott usually carries paper to record times.

Dinner: Everyone is invited to join us for dinner after the run.
Location TBD by the group, after the run.
Tentative schedule:
7/19: Elk Meadow, followed by potluck party at Kendra's
7/26: Deer Creek
8/2: Gudy Gaskill
