THURSDAY RUN
Location: Stone House Park (T=1, P=1-2, N=2). This location is not
listed on the DTR site. Read the directions and route descriptions below.
Time: The early group meets at 5:30pm. The main group will start
between at 6:15pm.
Directions: Stone House is in S Lakewood, just N of hwy 285, between
Wadsworth and Kipling. For mapping programs, use 2900 S. Estes, Lakewood.
From Denver, take hwy 6 to Wadsworth, South. Go ~4mi S on Wadsworth to
Yale. Yale is at a traffic light, ~1/2mi S of Morrison Rd, at the
bottom of a hill, ~1mi north of Hampden. Turn R on Yale ~3/4mi to
Estes. Turn left. Go 1/4 mile and turn left into the lot.
From the SE or SW, take hwy 285 (Hampden) to Kipling. Go north to
Dartmouth and turn right. Turn right again at the next street,
Dartmouth Place. Continue to the stop sign at Estes. Turn left at
Estes, down the hill, and over the creek. Then turn right into the
lot. You can also exit at Wadsworth, go N to Yale, then left, and
follow the directions above; Kipling has less traffic.
Main Route: This is a fairly easy route to follow. Start on the wide
dirt path that is directly across the street from the lot, and head
west. After ~2/3-mi, it merges with the bike path. REMEMBER THIS TURN
FOR THE WAY BACK! Continue W for another 1/4-mi. Jog left, cross the
road (Old Kipling), then pick up the path again on the other side.
Follow the path as it winds around the back of the condo complex. When
you hit the road at the golf course, go left and follow the road/bike
path towards the golf clubhouse. Continue on the road past the
clubhouse, and past the concrete, golf cart path on the right. The
next path on the right is the bike path. Take this path as it climbs
~2/3 mi to the top of the dam. This is an out-and-back run. Please use
your watch to determine when to turn around. We'll determine the
return time at the start. If you need more distance, go left, and run
on the crushed dirt across the top of the dam.
On the way back, if you miss the key turn noted above, continue east
on the bike path. You'll cross a wooden bridge to the right, then an
underpass at Estes. About 200 yards after crossing under Estes, look
for a footbridge on your left. Cross here to the finish.
Additional trail/dirt start: From the picnic shelters, head east on
the wide dirt path. Follow the path along the south side of two ponds.
The path curves left at the far end of the 2nd pond. At the NE side of
that pond, go right and head east towards Wadsworth. When you hit the
paved path, just before Wadsworth, go right and cross the footbridge.
Take an immediate right and either take the bike path, or the parallel
single track trails west back towards the start. After ~3/4 mi, you
can go right, across the bridge, back to the lot. Then, cross the road
and follow the main route. Or, skip the bridge and continue west on
the bike path.
There are additional dirt options along the path, heading out to the
condos. After crossing Old Kipling and coming down the hill, look for
a horse trail on the left. This generally follows the bike path. You
can take it until the bike path starts to curve N. Then, you need to
head back to the paved path.
Run notes: The path should be in pretty good condition, but be careful
of ice under bridges. We'll see how the dirt paths are before deciding
whether to take them.
If you are new to DTR, or unfamiliar with the trails, directions or
ratings, please follow the link below to maps, route descriptions,
driving directions, FAQs, and other information.

CARPOOLS

^2/11; Screamin' Snowman Snowshoe Race, Eldora
John Wright writes, "Does anybody else want to carpool to the Swift
Skedaddle snowshoe race this Saturday? I thought about trying my
first snowshoe race on the 4K. I would be up for skiing a bit
afterwards as well if anybody wants to do that as well.:

FEATURED RACES
*2/25; Run the Register Stair Climb
Denver Trail Runners is putting together teams for the race. The race
is up 47 floors, 1,014 steps, in the "Cash Register" building (Wells
Fargo Center), downtown Denver.
Justin has set up a Denver Trail Runners team. If there is enough
interest, we can set up a separate women's team, and additional DTR
teams. Please let me know if you are interested in setting up
additional teams. Otherwise, join the DenverTrailRunners team when you
sign up.
Running up 47 floors is a bit longer than running a mile, and a lot
harder. Last year's winning time was 6:10 men, 6:41 women. If you can
run 1 mile faster than about 6:50, you should sign up in the "elite"
category. That allows you to start early, so you won't have to fight
your way around lots of slower walkers.
There's a practice session on Feb 11. This is open to anyone
registered. There, you'll get to run up the stairs as many times as
you like, to practice different techniques (e.g., one vs. two stairs
at a time; one, both, or no hand rails). Justin (15th last year, out
of 921) will be leading a DTR group that day.
