Both the Ascent and Marathon are full. The Ascent filled in < 10 hrs;
the Marathon in < 24 hrs.
I think they should change the registration process. I am urging
people to contact them.
I think a lottery system is better and more fair. Allow people to
register (sign up for the lottery) over a week or so. Not everyone has the
luxury of being at their computer when registration opens. I know some people
who couldn't get in the Ascent because they were busy at work when registration
opened (ignoring the ethical issue of whether you should even be doing this at
work), and it was already full by the time they logged on. They could still do
it online with active.com. The Mt. Washington race (similarly big hill climb in
NH) uses a lottery with active.com. They could also weight the lottery (like
Hardrock does) or hold a specified number of spaces open for people on
consecutive streaks.
If you feel like I do, and/or have other ideas for the registration,
please contact them. They seem to be a fairly rigid organization. It
will take a lot of voices to get them to change.
This is not about sour grapes. I got into the race I wanted. This is
about making a system better for the running community. I would
recommend the same for any race that is that fills so quickly, so far
ahead of the race.
