This Sunday is the first Rocky Mountain Road Runners (RMRR) Trophy
Series (TS) race of the year.
The TS is a unique and fun race series that features a handicapped
start and scoring system. That means that the slower runners/walkers
start first, and the faster ones start later. That makes for fun and
exciting finishes, with everyone finishing at about the same time.
Your start time is based on a handicap score from previous TS races.
For newcomers, RMRR can use a recent race time (e.g., 5k/10k) to
assign you a start time. At this month's 10k race, I will start about
30 minutes (that's right) after the first starter.
After each race, awards are given to the top 15 run finishers (members
only), top 3 race walkers, and the fast male and female (open to all
runners). Throughout the year, members score points, based on their
finish, in the handicap and scratch categories, towards season long
awards.
The TS is a great training tool, as well as a lot of fun. Instead of
starting in a large pack, you start with a few people, or alone. This
teaches you to pace yourself properly. The crowded finishes teach you
to finish strong.
The TS races take place once a month, all 12 months of the year. The
distances range from 2mi to 10mi. The races are free for RMRR members,
and only $5 for non-members. RMRR membership has other benefits
including discounts at running stores and race entries, free track
workouts, and magazine subscriptions.
This Sunday's race is a 10k, at Twin Lakes Park, in Adams County. Twin
Lakes Park is at 70th & Broadway, near the junction of I-25, I-76, and
US36.
