Thanksgiving Week

In this week's message:
+ Thursday snowshoe. Friday run: Gudy Gaskill trail
+ Weekend groups: Sat Evergreen Runners Circle, Sun Golden
+ Incline Club season opening run 11/27
+ Form clinic rescheduled for 12/10
+ Volunteers needed for Derek’s Winter Race Series
+ Carpools and group trips: Chilly Hilly, Tecumseh Trail Marathon, Kilimanjaro Marathon
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events. NEW EVENTS ADDED

Is anyone interested in snowshoeing on Thursday morning? We would go somewhere off of Squaw Pass Rd, hwy 103, ~10-12mi up from Evergreen. This will be a short outing, about an hour or so. If interested, let me know.

Escape the malls! This week’s run will be on Friday morning, 9am, on the Gudy Gaskill trail. Meet at Ralston Elementary School, in Genesee. Take I70 to the Genesee exit, #254, at the buffalo overlook. Go north ~½mi to the school.

This will be a social run. We may split up along the way, but will regroup at all key intersections. The total run time will be about 1:30. This is a new trail in the Jeffco system. It takes you to some great views overlooking Clear Creek Canyon.

Route: See the attached map (sorry it's so large). If you don’t get the attachment, I’ll have extra copies at the run. Everyone will follow the blue line at the start. Return via either the pink (long), or yellow and blue lines (short).

Head west down the dirt road, Columbine Glen Ave. Veer right to the end of the dirt. Go around the chain and follow the jeep road. After you come out into a clearing, atop a ridge, just before the power line, take a sharp right onto a single track [A]. Follow this trail as it skirts along the upper edge of the meadow, just below the power line. The trail ends at a jeep road [B]. The shorter route will return up this road later. Now, go left down the road to the bottom of the meadow. Near the bottom of the meadow, look for a sign for the Beaver Brook trail [C]. Note that the un-hilighted trail, headed north on the map, does not exist, as far as I can tell. Go right onto the BB trail. Follow it for only ~600 yards. Look for a sign to the Gudy Gaskill trail on your left [D]. Go left on the GG trail. There are some nice views, overlooking Clear Creek Canyon, at the northern ends of the trail. Continue following the trail for ~3.5mi, until it winds back to the BB trail [E].

Short: Go left on the BB trail (yellow line). This will take you back to the bottom of the meadow in ~200 yards. At [C], stay right on the jeep road and head up the jeep road (blue line). Continue up the hill, past the single track [B], around a chain (yellow line), to the top [G]. Make a sharp right on the dirt road. Follow it around the hill. Go right and run under the Mt. Vernon CC sign, back to the school.

Long: Go right on the BB trail (pink line). The climb starts gradually, then become steep and rocky. At the top [F], head out to the rocks for another great overlook. Just past the overlook, you’ll see a sign for the BB trail heading right. Don’t take the right. Stay left and follow what is now a jeep road. It heads uphill and around Bald Mtn. At [H], you’ll see an old jeep road heading down the hill to the right. Go left here. This will take you back to the ridge overlooking the meadow, and under the power lines. At [A], stay right, back around the chain, and onto Columbine Glen Ave, to the finish.

The next full moon run is planned for Thursday, December 15.

The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday, 8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:
11/26: Chief Hosa. Run to the top of the peak and down the other side. (Burn off some of those turkey leftovers)
12/3: Elk Meadow. Lower parking lot.
12/10: Mt. Vernon CC, Beaver Brook, from the I-70 park and ride.
12/17: Upper Bear Creek. Start at mile marker 5.
12/24: Evergreen Lake House. (Merry Christmas everyone!)
12/31: Elk Meadow.  UPPER lot off of Stagecoach.

Golden weekend runs are moving to Sundays at 7:30 a.m., beginning this Sunday, November 20th. They meet outside Brooks Field, CSM Stadium, on 12th Street in Golden and will continue to run on at least six different trails in the foothills, on the mesas, and on other paths in the Golden area.  All of the courses allow for varying lengths (e.g. 6-14+ miles) and paces, depending on the interests of the runners on that day.  For further information contact Ron Benioff at rnbenioff@..., 303-279-6152.

The Incline Club kicks off their 10th season of runs, as always, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This year’s kickoff run is 11/27, 8:00am, from Memorial Park, in Manitou Springs.

Each Sunday, from now until August, they will run on the trails around the Pike Peak area. They stay fairly low over the winter, then gradually venture up higher as the trails dry. There is a large turnout, often >100 people, even over the winter, with a wide range of abilities.

Contact me if you are interested in carpooling down to these runs this, or any other Sunday.

My “Easy Running” form clinic has been rescheduled for Dec 10. There is space for more people. The goal is to make you a more efficient runner, reduce pounding – to teach you to have your body and gravity work for you, rather than against you. The clinic is 4 hours of drills and practice. Most of the runs are very short, 5-10 seconds, with lots of breaks and non-running drills. So, fitness is not a requirement. It’s suitable for all abilities. The clinic is a variation of the Trail101 clinics, I’ve taught for several years, with a focus on road running. For more information and to sign up, please go to http://www.runuphillracing.com

From Derek Griffiths:
“We are looking for volunteers for our Winter Distance Series races (www.winterdistanceseries.com) on 12/10/2005, 1/14/2006, and 2/25/2006. Please email Jessica at Jessica@... if you are interested. All volunteers will receive a comp entry to another event that we put on (www.coloradorunnermag.com/other/JDEvents.html) and will also receive all goodies that the runners receive. Thanks a lot!”

On Jan 21-22, there’s a 5-race, 2-day, trail event, near Bloomington, IN. Indiana in January? Not my first thought either. However, this looks really interesting.

The ChillyHilly is 5 trail races, of various distances, over 20 hours. It starts with a 10k run on Sat afternoon, then a 4mi run that night. On Sunday, there’s a 5km, 10mi, and 1mi run, all before noon. Housing (Sat night) and meals are included in the entry. You can do it as an individual, or relay.

It would be fun to go with a group. Several people have expressed interest. We would probably fly out Friday afternoon or evening, and return Sunday night. Contact me if interested, adam@...

Jim Romero is looking for anyone interested in joining him/group this coming Feb 2006 to run the Kilimanjaro marathon. He would be interested in people looking to run the marathon, and/or do a safari, and/or climb the mighty Kilimanjaro after the marathon. http://www.kilimanjaromarathon.com/

Please contact him at 303-794-2952, or jrom794@...
