In this week's message:
+ Thursday run: South Table Mtn
+ Other weekly runs: Sat Mornings Evergreen & Golden
+ Running on TV: "Four Minutes"
+ DTR Party, 10/22
+ Male runners needed for hill running study
+ DTR Road Trips and Carpools: 10/8, Silent Trails race; 11/12 Rimrock
+ Trail Races, clinics and other upcoming events. NEW EVENTS ADDED

This Thursday's run is at South Table Mountain. The main group will
start at 6:00pm. The early group usually starts around 5:30pm. This is
one of our regular winter run locations. This is a good chance to see
it in the light, at least most of it.

IMPORTANT ROUTE INFO: Although the run is fairly easy, the route is
difficult to follow for newcomers. PLEASE use the link below to read
and bring the route description and map. When running, please pay
attention to key turns on the way out. Please stay together in small
groups. If you are new, make sure you run with others; if you know the
route, please help guide others.

THE ROUTE HAS CHANGED slightly. We will follow the alternate route,
along the blue line, with a slight change. After crossing the downed
barbed wire, look for a single track trail and cairn (rock pile)
straight ahead. Head for the cairn, then go right on the jeep road.

It's time to start thinking about lights. We will probably finish this
run in the dark. Sunset-6:35pm; End Civil Twilight-7:02pm.

Martin Pahl lent his light to someone last spring. If you have it,
please bring it to the Thursday run, or contact me.

Tentative schedule:
10:13: Hogback/Matthews Winters; Sunset-6:24pm; End Civil Twilight-6:51pm.
10/17, Mon: Full Moon social run. Location TBD
10/20: Lookout/Chimney Gulch; Sunset-6:14pm; End Civil Twilight-6:41pm.
10/27: Bear Creek Lake Park; Sunset-6:05pm; End Civil Twilight-6:32pm.

If you are new to this trail, or to DTR, please follow the link below
to maps, route descriptions, driving directions, FAQs, and other
information.

The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds FREE runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:

A new Golden Running Club is starting with 10-14 mile runs every
Saturday morning. Meet at 6:30 a.m. outside Brook's Field (Colorado
School of Mines Stadium). They will run 6 different routes around
Golden, mostly on trails. We will divide into groups by pace and
distance as necessary. For further information contact Ron Benioff at
303-279-6152 (h), 303-384-7504 (w), rnbenioff@....

This Thursday, ESPN will be showing an original movie "Four Minutes." It's about
Roger Bannister, the first person to break the 4-minute mile. The 2 hour program
is scheduled to air at 5pm on Thursday, 10/6, on ESPN2. If taping it on TIVO or
VCR, be aware that it will start immediately following the end of the baseball
playoff game, so it could start earlier or later. It will replay a few times,
later that night, on ESPN2 and ESPN Classic, an several more times through next
week on all of the ESPN channels.

For those too young, or don't know the story, the 4-minute mile was thought to
be impossible - believed to be the limit of human speed. Roger Bannister, a 25yo
medical student, beat others, primarily Australian John Landy, to become the
first person to go sub-4, on May 6, 1954. Within the next 1-2 years, the
4-minute barrier was broken something like 30-40 times. The record is now at
3:43.13, by Hicham El Guerrouj, of Morrocco, set 6 years ago. High school
students have, and masters regularly do run sub-4. This shows how powerful
physchological barriers can be, and what we can really achieve once we get
beyond them.

DenverTrailRunners will have an "End of Season" party, Saturday
evening, October 22, in Lakewood. The party will be a pot-luck.
Directions and details will follow.

The party is to celebrate the end of our 6th summer season, to spend
time to meet some new people, and to get to know people outside of
running. Everyone on the list is invited, whether or not you've run
with us. Bring your spouse, significant other, and kids.

Krissy Falk writes, "Hello all, I have copied below an e-mail I
sent awhile ago regarding a study I am doing at CU in Boulder on
stride frequency in hill running. I am looking to recruit more male
subjects, age 18-35, who run at least 30 miles a week and/or have run
18:30 or below for a 5K. I apologize for the age limit. I was unable
to convince the Human Research Committee that trail runners were
exceedingly unlikely to experience cardiac events, even those over the
age of 35.

Thanks much,
Krissy Falk

Hello,
My name is Krissy Falk, and I am a graduate student in the
Locomotion Laboratory at CU, as well as a trail runner. I am currently
looking for subjects who would like to participate in a study on
stride frequency in uphill and downhill running and its effect on
biomechanics and metabolic cost. Participation is completely
voluntary. In order to participate, you must be 18-35 years old,
injury-free, have had no previous heart trouble (There is a short
questionnaire related to cardiac health and injury, which I can do
over the phone or by e-mail) and run at least 30 miles a week,
preferably hill running.
The study consists of three or four sessions: an orientation(<1
hour), one session on the level, and one at three degrees (5.2%)
uphill, and possibly one at three degrees (5.2%) downhill, each of
which will take less than 2 hours, probably closer to 1.5. Ideally, I
would like to have subjects do all four sessions, but due to the time
commitment, I would understand if it were only possible to do the
first three. Sessions would be scheduled at your convenience.
If you participate, I will be able to tell you if the stride
frequency you choose naturally is actually the most metabolically
efficient stride frequency for you, on the level, and for however many
slopes you choose to do. Additionally, I will be able to tell you if,
should your preferred stride frequency differ from your metabolically
optimal one, you should quicken or slow down your stride frequency to
become more efficient.
Orientations will start later this week. If you are interested in
participating in this study, please call me at (303) 492-0926 or
e-mail me anytime at Kristine.Falk@... and we can get through
the questionnaire and schedule a time for orientation.
Feel free to pass this e-mail on to anyone else who might be
interested. Thanks much and enjoy the trails!"
