This Thursday's run is on the Beaver Brook (BB) and Gudy Gaskill (GG)
trails (T3, P3, N3) from Genesee. The main group will start at
6:15pm. The early group usually starts around 5:30pm.
Directions: Take I-70 to the Genesee exit, #254. Go south, left from
Denver, cross the hwy, go left onto the frontage road, then an
immediate left into the park-n-ride lot. This is across the hwy from
where the ERC group meets.
This is a new trail for us. It's a variation on the ERC route, adding
the new GG trail. I haven't been on the new trail yet. I want to thank
Joe for scooping it out and providing the descriptions.
Sunset: 7:09pm; End civil twilight 7:36. Please plan your run to
return to the start by 7:20-7:30.
Routes: Return across the hwy and continue N, ~1/2mi. Just before the
big overhead sign for Mt Vernon Country Club, turn left onto Columbine
Glen Ave. We will ALL regroup here.* Some of you will be returning
from under the sign.
Follow Columbine Glen as it curves sharply to the right into a
residential area. The main road ends at a small trailhead parking
area. Immediately after the parking area, the dirt road forks. Stay
straight and go past the gate. ~100 meters after the gate, the road
forks again. Go left on the wide jeep road. As you cross the ridge,
notice the meadow and single track on the right. Some of us will
return to this ridge on the trail. Continue on the main jeep road.
It's fairly flat.. The road curves right, then climbs steeply as it
curves to the right. I will try to mark this turn. The road crests a
small hill, drops steeply, and then becomes a single track. Continue
on the trail to the large rock outcropping. Venture out on the rocks
for some great views of Clear Creek Canyon.
You are now on the BB trail. Note the occasional "B/B" signs on trees.
Descend from the rocks. This section is very steep and rocky, but
short. Near the bottom, look for the GG trail sign on the left. The
routes will split here. Runners of similar ability should wait and
regroup* at this point.
Fast and intermediate runners should go left onto the GG trail. This
is 2.5mi of single track, with some more nice views at the northern
end. The trail rejoins the BB trail ~3/4 mi from the other end of GG.
Please regroup here.* Go right on BB to the BB sign (mentioned below),
and the bottom of the meadow (mentioned above). Please regroup again
here.* Make a sharp left onto the wider jeep road and start climbing
alongside the meadow. See below for return options.
Slower intermediate and slower runners should continue past the GG
trail. The trail flattens out, then opens up at the bottom of the
meadow. Just as you start up the wider jeep road, look for a BB sign
on the left. The slower intermediate runners may have time to do a
short out-and-back on BB, to the GG trail junction. Please don't
venture too far down BB. From this BB sign, follow the wider jeep road
up along the edge of the meadow.
EVERYONE will climb up the jeep road. Past the small building on the
right, near the tree line, at the top of the meadow, look for a
single-track trail on the right. If there's still decent daylight, go
right on this trail. Follow the single track to the right, along the
upper edge of the meadow. Ignore other trails that join from the left.
At a fork, bear left and climb the single track, away from the meadow.
Very shortly you will cross a minor jeep road and continue climbing on
the single track to the jeep road at the start of the run. Go left and
retrace your steps, to Columbine Glen and I-70.
The shorter way back is to continue straight up the jeep road. The
jeep road comes out at a main dirt road. Make a sharp right here.
Follow the road around the hill. Go right under the Mt. Vernon CC sign
and return back to the start.
* Since this is a new trail, I'd like us to stay together in mini
groups to make sure that everyone can find their way safely. I will
try to lead the faster group. I'll lead Joe lead the intermediate
runners. We will ALL start together to the first turn. Then, please
regroup, at the designated spots, with Joe, me, or others around your
pace.
If I have time, I will post a topo map of the routes later.
In case of rain and muddy trails, we will run from the start, up to
the top of Genesee Mtn.
If you are new to this trail, or to DTR, please follow the link below

Tue morning runs continue at South Table Mtn (T=3, P=2, N=4) on
Tuesday mornings, 5:15am. You should bring a hand or head light for
the start of the run. Please see the message posted on Mondays, or
contact Leigh, LSingleton@..., or Ray at r2grundmeyer@...
Wed mornings, run stairs at Red Rocks. This is a "show-and-go"
workout, meaning that just start whenever you show up. People have
been starting anywhere from 5:30-6:30am. Is anyone showing up or
should I drop this listing?
The Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) holds free runs every Saturday,
8:30am, on trails, in the Evergreen area. Several DTR regulars join
these runs. The ERC runs are typically about 60 minutes long. They
usually go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Please forward your
questions to Dave via the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to: http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html
Schedule:

Kasey Robbert is "looking for any available female runner to join The
Womens Wilderness Institute's Outward Bound Relay Team this weekend.
Currently, we have Runner #3 available, but possibly #2 if preferred!
Both runner #3 & #2 are easy legs on paved/dirt roads. Runner #3
runs about 10miles out of the full 170miles, while runner #2 runs
about 14miles of the full 170miles. Our team is not competitive and
will be starting at 5am for that reason. We are not concerned with
fitness level as long as you can move yourself along the course
somehow...either run, walk, or crawl! If anyone is interested please
call or email me, Kasey Robbert, at 720.933.7103 or
mskasandramariesoles@... Thank you and hopefully there is
someone who would like to join our team for the weekend!

Michael Quispe has space in a room available in Snowmass, for the
Golden Leaf ½-marathon on Sunday:
"I will be staying at the Silvertree Hotel in Snowmass Village which
is located right at the starting line. I am planning to leave from
Denver at about 10:00 a.m. Saturday so I can spend the entire day in
Snowmass and relax and look around. Half the cost is only $55.00.
They can contact me via cell at 303-842-7243 or work at 720-963-4466."

Orienteering is a sport that involves running (or hiking, biking, skiing, etc.)
and navigating. You use a map and compass to find a series of controls. The maps
are highly detailed, usually much more so than a typical USGS topo map. Controls
are flags hung at objects like trees or boulders. At most events there are a
range of courses. Beginner courses are suitable for kids, fairly short
(1-1.5mi), with all the controls along trails. The more advanced courses are
longer (10km or more) and more difficult, where the controls are well off trail
and difficult to find.
Rocky Mountain Orienteering Club (RMOC) has several upcoming meets. The local
RMOC meets are low cost and low keyed, more like practice than competition.
There's a meet this Sunday, at Bear Creek Lake Park, in Lakewood. I set the
courses for this meet. There are 5 course - 4 on foot (beginner to advanced) and
one on mtn bike. There will be beginner instructions and loaner compasses. The
cost is only $5 or $10, depending on which course, or courses you do.
Other meets are:
9/17; Black Forest, Colo Springs. Foot only.
9/25; Scapegoat, Lake George.
10/1; Observatory, Nederland. Foot and bike courses.
10/15; Chatfield. Foot only.

I'd like to see if we can get enough people interested in group road
trips to the following races:
Silent Trails race, 10/8; in Laramie, WY. The race is a memorial to 7
members of the Univ. of Wyoming cross-country team, who were killed by
a drunk driver, while driving back from Colorado, in 2001. The race is
10mi, of single-track trail, in the Happy Jack Recreation Area, of the
medicine Bow National Forest, just outside of Laramie. Details at
http://www.uwyo.edu/silenttrails . If we can get enough interest, it
can be a lot of fun going to a race as a group. Laramie is less than 2
hours from Denver, no farther than going to Vail.
11/12. Rim Rock Run. This is one of the classic runs in the state. The
37km (~23mi) course travels through the incredibly scenic Colo Natl
Monument. It's a road race, but has over 1,700' of climbing.

Let me know if you're interested in either of these events, or have
ideas for others.

Save gas. Save money. It's more fun to go with a group. Send me a note
if interested in carpooling to any upcoming events. I'll try to help
you find a driving partner. Please send me the information by the
weekend prior to the event.
