Week of July 22

+ Thursday evening run: Hogback/Matthew Winters (T=5, P=3, N=3)**
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: TBD
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run, 8/1
+ Weekend long runs: 8/7 Argentine Pass run and ride

This Thursday's run is at Hogback/Matthew Winters (T=5, P=3, N=3)**.
The main group will start at 6:15pm sharp. A smaller group usually
starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.

Directions: Take I-70 to the Red Rocks/Golden/Morrison exit, #259. Go
south about 50 yards, then turn left into the Stegosaurus lot, across
the road from Matthews Winters park.

Route (see attached***): From the lot (START), head up the trail from
the lot. Turn right at the gate and follow the trail along the ridge to
the south. Go down the stairs, cross the road (ROAD1), go right, and
pick up the trail on the other side. Follow the trail down the east
side of the hogback to the road (ROAD2). Cross the road and enter Red
Rocks. About 50 yards into Red Rocks (RR1), go right onto the Red Rocks
trail. Cross the dirt road and continue right up the trail. Depending
on which route you take and how well you handle hills, you are about
halfway along this stretch. Cross the paved road (MW1), then follow the
trail up to Matthews Winters park. ~2/3 mi up, the trail splits (MS1).
Take the Red Rocks trail to the right and continue north. Take either
trail at MW2. The right, blue trail takes 1-2 minutes longer. Go up the
stairs, right out the lot, cross the road (carefully) back to the
Stegosaurus lot.

Beginner option. At the south entrance to Matthews Winters park (MW1),
you can shorten the run by going right on the road. Take it down to the
main road. Then go left, up the hill, along the road, for ~1mi to the
lot.

Advanced option 1: At the entrance to Red Rocks (RR1), stay straight on
the road. Go past the dirt road to the next pave road junction. Go
right up the hill, past the Trading Post, to the 3-way junction above
the ampitheatre (RR2). Make a sharp right onto the single track and
merge back with the main route. This adds a few minutes and a little
more climbing.

Adv 2: After entering Matthews Winters park (MS1), go left and climb
the Morrison Slide trail. Cross the plateau, come down the north side,
and merge back with the main route (MS2). This adds 5-10 minutes and a
good climb.

Regrouping: To help those unfamiliar with the route, please stop and
regroup, with others around your speed, at the following places:
ROAD1 - where the trail crosses the road at the top of the hogback
RR1 - at the start of the Red Rocks trail
MW1 - at the entrance to Matthews Winters
MS1 - At the Morrison Slide/Red Rocks trail split

*** The main route is in red. The profile at the bottom follows the
main route. The yellow line is shorter options. The blue lines are
longer options.

Upcoming run schedule (subject to change):
7/29-Deer Creek, potluck picnic
8/5-Ken Caryl
8/12-Mt. Falcon time trial
8/19- Lookout/Chimney Gulch
8/26-Lair o' the Bear, potluck picnic

The new Saturday Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) schedule has not been
posted yet. Please see the link below.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

The 2nd annual Golden Gate Canyon Trail Run is Sunday, Aug 1, 8:30am.
The race is 10.3mi of mostly single track and jeep roads. There is
~2,000' of climbing, some very steep and rocky, with a short scramble
section. It goes through gorgeous aspen and pine forests, with views of
the continental divide and the Indian Peaks area.

Info is at http://races.runuphillracing.com/ including a printable app.
Online registration is available at
http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1141314

If you can't run, please consider volunteering. I can always use
additional help. Contact me at 303-282-3921, or

Weekend mountain runs:
8/7 - Argentine Pass. This is a ~18mi that starts at Silver Plume,
~9,160', climbs to the pass at 13,192' in 10.5mi, then descends to
~10,250' in Montezuma. I am hoping to get enough interest so that we
can have cars on both ends, possible with people going in both
directions. Some of us may run to Montezuma then mtn bike back, if we
can find a way to stage our bikes in Montezuma beforehand. Contact me
if interested. Details to follow later.

** Trail Rating - 1-5 scale, 1 being the easiest.
T = technical difficulty (rocks, narrow, curves, etc.)
P = physical difficulty (length, steepness and number of climbs)
N = navigational difficulty (ease of following the routes)
