Green Mtn Time Trial, 7/15 Message List
Reply | Forward Message #444 of 1485 |
+ Thursday evening run: Green Mtn. time trial, Rooney Road lot (T=3,
P=2-4; N=3)**
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Evergreen Peak Race (T=3,
P=3, N=2)**
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Weekend long runs: 7/17 Leadville, 8/7 Argentine Pass

This Thursday's run will be a time trial at Green Mtn., Rooney Road lot
(T=3, P=2-4; N=3)**. The main group will start at 6:15pm sharp. A
smaller group usually starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie
or Kim.

Directions: From Denver, take 6th Ave. to I70 to the Morrison/Red Rocks
exit, #259. Go left, under the highway, and continue ~1mi south, down
the hill. Take the first left, over the hogback. At the bottom of the
hill, on the other side, before you cross over C-470, turn left onto
Rooney Rd. The lot is about 1/2 mile up on the right.

From the south, take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west, then take the first
right on Rooney Road, before you enter Morrison, by the Conoco station.
About 2.5 miles up, the road ends at Alameda. Go left, cross over
C-470, then take the next right onto Rooney Road again.

Rooney Rd has been closed between the lot and US40 due to construction.
I don't know if it has reopened yet.

Course: The time trial course is 3.2mi of rolling trails. There are
short ups and downs, a mix of single and double track, with pretty good
footing. I think that most people will be several minutes faster than
the Falcon course, even though it is .7mi shorter, and about 25%-33%
slower than your 5k time.

I'd like to use a staggered start system to avoid congestion on the
trail, and so that we can all finish within a couple of minutes of each
other. We'll start in groups every 3 min based, on estimated 5k times:
Start, 5k time
0:00, 30+
3:00, 27:30-30:00
6:00, 25:00-27:30
9:00, 22:30-25:00
12:00, 20:00-22:30
15:00, <20:00

Please bring a watch to time yourself. I'll record your times at the
time trial finish.

We'll start just across the bridge. Take the dirt trail on the right.
Stay right at the first trail junction. Follow the main trail around
the south side of the mountain to the Florida parking lot. Stop your
watches when you pass through the rocks at the bottom end of the lot.
It's 3.2mi with the following intermediate splits:
0.6mi - 1st trail junction where you turn right.
1.8mi - At bottom of a gully, you'll see a small dirt lot on the right,
the closest the trails is to the road.
2.85mi - Cross the Utah trail.

I will stash some water behind the trail sign there, if I have time.
Bring a water bottle.

Return: There are several return options, depending on how much more
you want to do and how fast your are. We generally run much easier
after the time trial so that most can stay together. We'll discuss this
after the time trial.

Easy - Return along the time trial course.

Intermediate - Go up the trail from the top end of the lot. Follow it
1.2mi up to the TV/radio towers. Go left and take the service road all
the way back.

Intermediate + - Start up the intermediate trail above. Part way up,
you take a 90 left turn by a wooded fence. After the next rise,
look for a trail on the left. It's 2/3mi from the lot. Take it 1/4mi
across to the Utah trail then go right. After another mile, go left on
the service road.

Advanced - Start on either of the intermediate routes. Shortly after
the top of the mtn, the road goes left and becomes steep. There, veer
straight, off the road, onto the single track. After 1/4 mi, go left
and start descending. At a saddle about a mile down, take a sharp left
down the steep hill. The trail goes up and down a couple of gullies,
then rejoins the service road. Go right to the end. This option is ~2mi
longer than the service road.

Upcoming run schedule (subject to change):
7/22-Hogback/Matthews Winters
7/29-Deer Creek, potluck picnic
8/5-Ken Caryl
8/12-Mt. Falcon time trial
8/19- Lookout/Chimney Gulch
8/26-Lair o' the Bear, potluck picnic

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is the Evergreen
Peak Race at Alderfer/3 Sisters (T=3, P=3, N=2)**. See the race info
below.

Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70, to the main
light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming from
I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4 mile
up, on Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the hill, past the high school,
past the lower Alderfer lots, to the open meadows at the top. Park in
the dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the ERC link below. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

Weekend mountain runs:
7/17 - Leadville. Join us as we run part of the Leadville 100 course. I
plan to run from Winfield or the Colo Trailhead, to Halfmoon or
Treeline, with some of my pacers. The total distance will be 17-22
miles, depending on where we start and finish. The first 8-10 mi is
over Hope Pass, 12,600', to Twin Lakes. One pacer will be stopping
there. The other will start at Twin Lakes. This next section starts
with a ~2mi climb, rolls through aspen and pine forests along the Colo
Trail, then finishes down a dirt road, 1mi to Halfmoon, another 3mi to
Treeline. You can do either or both sections. I expect that we will
have drivers to shuttle at the start, Twin Lakes, and the end. Contact
me (runahill@...) if interested and I will send you details about
time, carpool, etc., as we develop them.

8/7 - Argentine Pass. This is a ~18mi that starts at Silver Plume,
~9,160', climbs to the pass at 13,192' in 10.5mi, and finishes in
Montezuma, ~10,250'. I am hoping to get enough interest so that we can
have cars on both ends, possible with people going in both directions.
Some of us may run to Montezuma then mtn bike back, if we can find a
way to stage our bikes in Montezuma beforehand. Contact me if
interested. Details to follow later.

** Trail Rating - 1-5 scale, 1 being the easiest.
T = technical difficulty (rocks, narrow, curves, etc.)
P = physical difficulty (length, steepness and number of climbs)
N = navigational difficulty (ease of following the routes)
