Falcon time trial 5/20   Message List

+ Thursday evening run: Mt. Falcon (T=3, P=5, N=2)**
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Elk Meadow, lower lot (T=3,
P=2-5, N=2)
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Long run May 22
+ Music and running study

This Thursday's (5/20) run is our monthly time trial at Mt. Falcon
(T=3, P=5, N=2)**. The main group starts at 6:15pm. A smaller group
usually starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.

The time trial is a regular feature of DTR. We do it because people
have said that they want it, in surveys. The time trial course is 2.5mi
with 1,500' of climbing. It's for everyone, not just the faster
runners. We've had times from 22 to 55 minutes. We use a handicap start
system with the slowest runners starting first, and everyone finishing
at about the same time. For the first run of the season, we'll just
estimate the starts (see formula below). Please bring a stop watch.
After the time trial, we usually do a slow, casual run at the top
before running down

Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd., hwy 74. Go west, through the
town of Morrison. Turn left onto hwy 8. About 1 mile up the hill, look
for signs to the park. Turn right onto Forrest. Take the next right to
the park. If the lot is full, you may have to park on the road. From
hwy 285, and the south, take the hwy 8 exit, the first exit west of
C-470. About 1 mile north of The Fort restaurant, look for Forrest
drive and signs to the park.

Time Trial Route: Start by the bathrooms at the bottom. Finish at the
first pillar at the gazebo at the top. Follow the Castle trail all the
way (this is the same route as the Mt Falcon trail race on 6/12). Stay
left about 200 yards after the start. The trails merge again a little
more than halfway. Gather and rest in the gazebo. I'll collect times
there. Then, either join us for a casual run, or head back down. On the
way down, either take Castle trail all the way, or, for a little longer
route, go left halfway down onto the Turkey Trot trail.

Casual routes from the Gazebo: A short run is to go right from the
gazebo ~1/2 mi to the summer house (ruin). It has great views. For a
longer run, we'll head ~1mi along the Castle trail to the 2nd junction
with the Meadow trail. Go left there, and continue making lefts back
tot he Castle trail. Then go right back to the gazebo and down the
hill. After the first left, the faster runners may take the slightly
longer Tower trail before merging back with the Meadow trail.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Elk Meadow,
lower lot (T=3, P=2-5, N=2). The run starts at 8:30am sharp. The meadow
loop is a nice, 5-6 mi loop. Some may decide to climb to Bergen Peak,
which adds a long, grueling climb and descent.

Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70, to the main
light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming from
I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4 mile
up, on Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the hill, past the high school,
past the lower Alderfer lots, to the open meadows at the top. Park in
the dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house. Take the
Evergreen Parkway, hwy 74, exit 252 from I-70. Continue through Bergen
Park ~4.5 mi. Just after you pass Elk Meadow on your right, turn right
at the light at the bottom of the hill, turn right onto Lewis Ridge
Rd., then an immediate right into the dirt lot.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the link below ERC. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

Tim Erickson has rescheduled his long run for Saturday, May 22.

"The run is a loop starting and ending near Bailey and is about 28
miles with 5000' of climb. It is mostly in the Lost Creek Wilderness
and is all single track. The low point is about 8,500' and the high
point is about 11,800'. Last summer it took me about 8.5 hours. I am
looking for self-sufficient runners that travel uphill about 3.5 to 4.5
mph uphill and 5 to 7 mph downhill, although I will welcome slower or
faster runners if they agree upon regrouping spots (FRS radios are
helpful). This loop is pretty remote but very scenic. I saw a bear
the last time I ran it. I would like to start running by 6:00 a.m.
Interested runners can contact me at EricksonZoo@... or
tim.erickson@.... Be
sure to put "Interested in the North Lost Creek Loop" in the subject.
Or they can call me at 720-280-0465.

In a couple of weeks I plan to run the West Lost Creek Loop. It is
about 30 miles with 6500' of climb and is truly spectactular. The
route goes from alpine tundra into some deep canyons. I will send more
details in the future."

John Macgowan writes:

"This June, we will be conducting a comprehensive study of endurance
athletes as to their ability to detect and adjust running/cycling
cadence to specifically composed music. It is our intent to recruit
endurance athletes to participate in this study through endurance
related group memberships. There is no cost to the participations. The
only requirements are that they are currently training and that they
listen to self recorded music (mp3, burned cd’s etc..) as they train.
Participants will be compensated with training materials at the
conclusion of the study."

Please contact him at testtuneusers@...
