+ Thursday evening run: Apex (T=4, P=3, N=2)**
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Chief Hosa (T=1, P=2, N=2)**
+ Races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Long run May 15
+ Looking for trail runners in Ft. Collins
+ Looking for a Colo Relay team
This Thursday's run is at Apex (T=4, P=3, N=2)**. The main group will
start at 6:15pm. A smaller group starts around 5:30pm; look for Scott,
Ray, Connie or Kim.
Directions: Meet at the north end of the lower Heritage Square lot, by
the large trail map. Take 6th Ave. west to the end of the freeway. Turn
left onto US 40/Colfax, the light at the end of the freeway. Go about
1.5mi to the entrance to Heritage Square. Turn right, then an immediate
right to the lower lot. From C-470 and I-70, take the Red Rocks exit,
#259. Go north, about a mile down the hill. Turn left at Heritage
Square, then an immediate right to the lower lot.
Route: We'll run this in a clockwise direction. There are different
directions for different levels. Please run the appropriate distance
for your speed. Maps are at (the distances aren't accurate, but are in
my description and on the maps at the trail head):
http://www.co.jefferson.co.us/ext/dpt/comm_res/openspac/apex.htm
All groups will start up the trail by the map, jog right across the
footbridge, then left into the canyon. Stay straight on the Apex trail
past the first junction, ~.7mi, to the next junction, .8mi, Sluice Box.
This lower section is pretty rocky.
Slow runners should turn right here and climb the switchbacks. There
are three options from the top: 1) Take the first right on Pick N'
Sledge, total distance ~4.5mi; 2) Continue a short distance to the 2nd
right, Bonanza, total distance ~4.9mi; 3) Continue around on the
Grubstake Loop, this adds considerable distance, ~5.5mi, and climbing.
With all options, follow Pick N' Sledge down the hill to the Apex
Trail, and go left to the finish.
Intermediate and faster runners should stay straight past Sluicebox for
~.3mi. Cross the bridge to the left into the Enchanted Forest. Climb
~1.3mi to the top. Go right, and come back down the Apex trail.
Intermediate runners should continue down Apex to the finish, total
distance ~5.9mi.
Fast and advanced intermediate runners should go left at Sluicebox.
Then, take any of the 3 options described above for total distances of
7.4, 7.8, or 8.4mi.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Chief Hosa
(T=1, P=2, N=2).** The run starts at 8:30am sharp.
Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70, to the main
light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming from
I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4 mile
up, on Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the hill, past the high school,
past the lower Alderfer lots, to the open meadows at the top. Park in
the dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house. Take I-70 to
the Chief Hosa exit, #253. Go south, left (if coming from Denver)
across the highway. Go left on the dirt frontage road a short distance
and park near the "Y", just below the lodge.
The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. Several of us do the ERC runs,
but I don't organize them. Please forward your questions to Dave via
the link below ERC. For more info about the ERC schedules, go to:

Long run on Saturday, May 15. From Time Erickson,
EricksonZoo@...
"I will be doing a Saturday training run on 5/15/04 and am looking for
company. The run is a loop starting and ending near Bailey and is about
28 miles with 5000' of climb. The low point is about 8,500' and the
high point is about 11,800'. Last summer it took me about 8.5 hours. I
am looking for self-sufficient runners that travel uphill about 3.5 to
4.5 mph uphill and 5 to 7 mph downhill, although I will welcome slower
or faster runners if they agree upon regrouping spots. This loop is
pretty remote but very scenic. I saw a bear the last time I ran it. I
would like to start running by 5:30 a.m. Interested runners can contact
me at EricksonZoo@..., be sure to put "Interested in the
North Lost Creek Loop" in the subject. Or they can call me at
720-280-0465.
The date may change if there is still too much snow."

From Ralph Petrilli, RalphP302@...
"I'm hoping to run on a ten person team in the Colorado Outward Bound
Relay this Sept. 24-25 for the "sociability" of it, beautiful scenery,
and challenge. http://www.coloradorelay.com/ I'm somewhat better with
endurance then speed, run a road 10k in about 48-49 minutes recently.
Getting ready to participate in a 1/2 ironman tri. I would really enjoy
being in the relay but the runners I have spoken with so far have
schedule conflicts, etc. I was wondering if anyone reading this is
forming a team and looking for one more runner (me!). If so, I'd
appreciate hearing from you. Ralph ralphp302@... p.s. I live
about 30 miles north of Denver so could meet occasionally in Colorado
if the group was planning any get acquainted runs ahead of time"

** Trail Rating - 1-5 scale, 1 being the easiest.
T = technical difficulty (rocks, narrow, curves, etc.)
P = physical difficulty (length, steepness and number of climbs)
N = navigational difficulty (ease of following the routes)
