+ Thursday evening run: Hogback/Matthew Winters (T=5, P=3)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Alderfer/3 Sisters (T=3,
P=3)
+ Trail/Snowshoe races, clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities
This Thursday's run is at Hogback/Matthew Winters (T=5, P=3)*. The main
group will start at 6:15pm. A smaller group usually meets at 5:30pm;
look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim.
*T=technical difficulty; P=physical difficulty; 1-5 scale, 5 being the
hardest.
The most technical part of the run is at the beginning, along the
hogback. We will start promptly so that we can get through most of this
section while we still have some light. After crossing the road at the
top of the hogback (ROAD1), the footing is much better. The section
across or around the plateau, from MS1 to MS2, is also a little rocky.
Directions: Take I-70 to the Red Rocks/Golden/Morrison exit, #259. Go
south about 100 yards, then turn left into the Stegosaurus lot, across
the road from Matthews Winters park.
Route (see attached**): From the lot (START), head up the trail, turn
right at the gate and follow the trail along the ridge to the south. Go
down the stairs, cross the road (ROAD1), go right, and pick up the
trail on the other side. Follow the trail down the east side of the
hogback to the road (ROAD2). Cross the road and enter Red Rocks. About
50 yards into Red Rocks (RR1), go right onto the Red Rocks trail. Cross
the dirt road and continue right up the trail. Depending on which route
you take and how well you handle hills, you are about halfway along
this stretch. Cross the paved road (MW1) and follow the trail up to
Matthews Winters park. ~2/3 mi up, the trail splits (MS1). Take the Red
Rocks trail to the right and continue north. At MW2, please stay left.
The right, blue trail is very muddy this time of year. Go up the
stairs, right out the lot, cross the road (carefully) back to the
Stegosaurus lot.
Beginner option (yellow line). At the south entrance to Matthews
Winters park (MW1), you can shorten the run by going right on the road.
Take it down to the main road. Then go left up the hill for ~1mi to the
lot.
Advanced options (blue lines): At the entrance to Red Rocks (RR1), stay
straight on the road. Go past the dirt road to the next pave road
junction. Go right up the hill, past the Trading Post, to the 3-way
junction above the ampitheatre (RR2). Make a sharp right onto the
single track and merge back with the main route. This adds a few
minutes and a little more climbing.
Adv 2: After entering Matthews Winters park (MS1), go left and climb
the Morrison Slide trail. Cross the plateau, come down the north side,
and merge back with the main route (MS2). This adds 5-10 minutes and a
good climb.
** The main route is in red. The profile at the bottom follows the main
route. The yellow line is shorter options. The blue lines are longer
options.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Alderfer/3
Sisters (T=3, P=3). The run starts at 8:30am sharp.
Take the Evergreen Parkway exit, hwy 74, #252, from I-70, to the main
light in Evergreen, just below the dam. Go south (right if coming from
I-70) on hwy 73 towards Conifer. Make the first right, about 3/4 mile
up, on Buffalo Park Rd. Continue up the hill, past the high school,
past the lower Alderfer lots, to the open meadows at the top. Park in
the dirt lot on the right, just past the yellow house.
The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't organize the ERC runs
(I and other DTR regulars often attend them), so please forward your
questions to Dave via the link below ERC. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to:
