I apologize for the infected message sent out on Monday. Neither the
message nor the attachment came from me or my computer. I do not use
Outlook. My computer/mail program has not been infected. The message
came from someone who forged my e-mail address (in order for Yahoo to
accept the message). Only myself and a very select group of group
"moderators" have ever been allowed to post messages. This is the only
time in 4 years that there's been SPAM or a virus sent to the group.

I have taken steps to prevent this from happening again. Moderators
were previously able to post directly. From now on, we will have to go
through a 2-step process of posting, then approving messages before
then go out. While someone may be able to forge my e-mail address, they
will now have to get my password and log in to approve any message
before it goes out. Yahoo has some good tools for managing the group
-in the last week alone, over 250 spam messages were automatically
blocked - so this should work, at least until Spammers get even more
sophisticated.

Every single attachment (e.g., race apps, maps) I send out is scanned
for viruses by Yahoo (who has a much more sophisticated and up to date
detection system) before it gets attached. Just in case, never open a
DTR message or attachment that doesn't have anything to do with
running.

If you want to send info to the group, please send it to me first and I
will determine if it's appropriate to include in the weekly message.
Please, only send running (or similar) related stuff and NO
solicitation. Please send it the week before so that I have time to
review it and add to the message. Send it to:
DenverTrailRunners-owner@yahoogroups.com

DTR is set up as a newsletter group, not a discussion group, largely to
prevent spam or a flood of messages. If you are interested in a trail
running discussion group, please go to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AmericanTrailRunning/

Does anyone have any good resolution photos of the DTR group, or
another trail running scene that might look like us? Rocky Mountain
Sports Magazine is doing a profile of the group for the April or May
issue, and would like a photo. If so, please e-mail it to me. Or, can
someone bring a digital camera and take a picture this Thursday?

This Thursday's run is at Bear Creek Lake Park (T=2, P=1-2)*. The main
group will start at 6:15pm. A smaller group usually meets at 5:30pm;
look for Scott, Ray, Connie or Kim at the early start.

This is a good run for newcomers. The trails are fairly easy to run and
to follow. I've also added a non-trail option. Please join us after the
run for dinner and to celebrate my birthday (44), restaurant tbd,
probably in Morrison.

*T=technical difficulty; P=physical difficulty; 1-5 scale, 5 being the
hardest.

Directions: Take C-470 to Morrison Rd. Go west. Take the first right at
Rooney Rd, then an immediate right into the dirt lot, across from the
Conoco Station. The run starts by taking the bike path across Morrison
Rd into the park.

Alternate routes if coming from I-70, in case of bad weather or if
C-470 is really crowded. Stay on I-70 to the Morrison/Red Rocks exit,
#259. Go left (if coming from Denver) and follow the road down the hill
~3mi to Morrison. Turn left at the light and go about 1/2 mi to Rooney
Rd.

Route (see attached BCLP routes.jpg)): The main route is in blue.
Across Morrison Rd from the lot, take the bike path under C470 and into
the park. Go right across the first bridge, then an immediate left onto
a single-track trail. Go through the picnic area, cross the road, and
pick up the trail again on the other side. The trail goes through a
horse fence and parallels the creek along the south side. After the 2nd
horse fence, the trail opens up and follows an exercise course. About
1.75mi from the start, the path curves right. Look for a single track
on the left heading over a small hill. This leads to a large, dirt,
parking lot. Cross the lot, staying to the right side. Head through the
large rocks on the other side of the lot, then down the hill to the
creek. Cross the creek, then go left on the trails. At the base of the
mountain, go left and follow the road across the base of the dam. At
the other end, go left onto the single-track. Cross through the paved
fisherman's parking lot, then pick up the main trail on your left. This
parallels the creek on the north side. At the end of the trail, go
right onto the main road, past the entry booth, onto the bike path, and
back to the start.

Non-trail option: Near the start, don't go right across the bridge.
Stay straight, go onto the road, past the entry booth, stay left at the
"Y", and continue east on the main park road (brown line). At the base
of the dam, go left up the hill. Continue down the bike path on the
other side, or across the top of the damn. Turn and return the same way
to finish in an hour.

Advanced/Intermediate options (red line): Take any or all of these
options. 1) Just after the first picnic area, go right at the road up
the left trail. About 1/3 mi later, take a sharp left, through the
horse fence, down to the main trail, then right. 2) Before crossing
Turkey Creek, go right on the trail and follow it to the paved bike
path. Go left across the bridge, then an immediate left again onto the
single track. The trail forks off in several places. Any one will do as
long as you head east towards the base of the mountain. 3) At the base
of Mt. Carbon, climb the steep trail to the top. At the top, the
single-track stays left. A short way around the side of the hill, take
the left fork steeply down to the top of the dam. 4a) Just before the
top of the dam take a sharp left down the trail to the road, then right
across the base of the dam. 4b) Go around the fence, left across the
base of the dam, then left down the road. Go through the dirt lot
towards the bathrooms and onto the single-track down towards the lake.
5) At the fisherman's lot, go right to, then across the main road. Stay
left of the ravine and take the trail up the hill. Don't take the trail
on the right side of the ravine. Go left at the top, then look for a
footbridge on the right. Cross the ditch, then go left onto the dirt
road. At the west end, go around the chain, quickly left through the
fence, and down the steep hill. Go right on the road and continue to
the finish.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at O'Fallon Park
(T=2, P=3). The run starts at 8:30am sharp.

Take C-470 to the Morrison exit, hwy 74. Go west, through Morrison, and
continue about 6mi to Kittredge. The park entrance is on the left,
shortly before the intersection with Meyers Gulch Road.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. They usually
go out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't organize the ERC runs
(I and other DTR regulars often attend them), so please forward your
questions to Dave via the link below ERC. For more info about the ERC
schedules, go to:
