+ Thursday evening run: Highline Canal @ deKoevend Park/Goodsen Rec.
Center (T=1, P=1)
+ Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle run: Chief Hosa (T=1, P=2)
+ Echo Lake snowshoe race 2/14 - FREE
+ Races, Clinics and other upcoming events
+ Other weekend outings and carpool opportunities

This Thursday's run is on the Highline Canal @ deKoevend Park/Goodsen
Rec. Center. The main group will start at 6:30pm. A smaller group
sometimes meets at 5:30pm. Look for Scott McFarlane, Connie Ahrnsbrak
or Ray Grundmeyer at the early start.

The Highline Canal is a wide, smooth, dirt (snow covered) path that
winds its way through Cherry Hills Village. Footing is pretty good in
snow and ice. It doesn't require lights or trail shoes. We'll meet
inside the rec. center. The run starts at the 0.0 mile marker on the
path a bit east of the rec. center. From there, head north. It's an
out-and-back run, so turn at ~30 minutes. For the faster group, it's
4.1 miles one way to Orchard.

Directions (see attached): deKoevend Park is on University between
Orchard and Arapahoe. From downtown and the north, take I-25 to
University; go south about 5 miles; turn right at the first light south
of Orchard. University can be slow going in rush hour. An alternate way
to go is to exit I-25 at Broadway; go south to the 2nd light, 1st
street, Mississippi; turn left for 4 blocks to Logan (you may have to
weave through some detours; take Logan south to Belleview; turn left to
University; turn right to the park. Logan has much less traffic than
University. From the DTC, take Arapahoe west to University; turn right
for about 1/2 mile; turn left at the light into the park. Or, take
Orchard west; follow the zig-zags to University; turn left to the park.
From the west, take C-470 to University and go north; or take Belleview
east to University and turn right.

This Saturday's Evergreen Runners Circle (ERC) run is at Chief Hosa.
The run starts at 8:30am sharp. This is a great winter running
location. It's almost all on a maintained, dirt road. There will be
snow and some post-holing if you do the last 3/4 mile to the flagpole
at the top.

Take I-70 to the Chief Hosa exit, #253. Go south, left (if coming from
Denver) across the highway. Go left on the dirt frontage road a short
distance and park near the "Y", just below the lodge.

The ERC runs are usually 60-90 minutes long. Occasionally, some people
will start early, or run longer, to get in more mileage. We usually go
out for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I don't organize these runs,
although I, and other DTR regulars often attend them, so please don't
ask me questions about ERC. For more info about the ERC schedules, go
to:
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Lodge/7018/index.html

Schedule:
2/14: Upper Bear Creek Road. Start at the 5 mile marker.
2/21: Beaver Brook Trail. Start from Genesee, the buffalo overlook.
2/28: Alderfer Three Sisters.

I am putting on a FREE snowshoe race on Sunday, Feb 15. The race will
be approximately 5-6 tough miles. It is mostly off trail, in the trees,
wading through powder, over logs, under branches, with some steep ups
and downs. There will be a shorter, approximately 2 mile option
available. The race will start at 10:00am by the toll booth. I will try
to time the event, but be prepared to keep your own time, especially if
you beat me or do the shorter course. There will be no aid on the
course.

No sign up required. Just show up and have fun. The race can be done
without volunteers. However, if you'd like to help instead of racing,
let me know in advance.

Directions from Denver: There are two options. 1) Take I-70 to
Evergreen Parkway, exit 252; follow hwy 74 for ~2.5mi to Squaw Pass Rd,
hwy 103; turn right and go 18 miles to Echo Lake. 2) Continue west on
I-70 to the main Idaho Springs exit, #240; go left onto hwy 103 for 13
miles. There should be plenty of parking by the lodge (closed for the
winter).

After the race, we will head down to Idaho Springs for some food, drink
and fun.

Join me on Saturday, Feb 14, as I mark the course (tentative). Meet at
the Bergen Park park-n-ride lot at 10:15am, or start the morning with
me at the ERC run. Take I-70 to Evergreen Parkway, exit 252; follow hwy
74 for ~2.25 to hwy 65, the light at the bottom of a hill; turn left,
then an immediate right into the lot. We'll carpool to Echo Lake. We'll
mostly be hiking the course (on snowshoes). I'm guessing that it will
take 2:00-2:30 to hike the course. We should return to Bergen Park
around 2:00-2:30pm.

Please reply if you plan to join me on Saturday. Runahill@...
