Jenkins has one heck of a mentor

The video above shows Deion Sanders as a Florida State Seminole. And that's when the connection between he and Cowboys first-round pick Mike Jenkins got its start.

Jenkins' uncle, Tracy Sanders, was the starter opposite Prime Time at FSU in the late '80s, before playing for a few years with the Packers. So one Sanders put the other Sanders in touch with Jenkins, and the kid wound up with a pretty good professor in the school of cornerbacking.

Deion and Jenkins have talked more than ever over the last year, and traded text messages just a couple days ago in advance of this camp. And as he starts his professional career, Jenkins is listening as intently as he ever has to all of the wise words of No. 21.

"He keeps me level," Jenkins said today. "He keeps my confidence up, and he always has a lot of good things to say about me that I can feed off of. He's willing to help anytime, I can text him anytime of the night or day, and he's going to get right back to you and he's going to be ready to help you."

Because of Deion, Jenkins isn't a novice when it comes to Cowboys history. But it's not like he was really a Dallas fanatic. He'd also rooted in spurts for the Falcons and 49ers, which if you followed Sanders' career, makes a whole lot of sense.

"(Deion's) one of the greatest players ever," Jenkins said. "I pretty much followed him everywhere he went. Each team he went to, that was my favorite team."

High picks and Texas Tech kid catch Jerry's eye
1:36 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

You can only tell so much from watching rookies run around in shorts and helmets, but Jerry liked what he saw this morning.

He singled out four guys who impressed him: the Cowboys' first three picks and undrafted free agent WR Danny Amendola, aka "that boy from Texas Tech."

Jerry gushed about how "smooth" RB Felix Jones looked, especially catching the ball. He was pleased with CB Mike Jenkins' quickness, and he liked TE Martellus Bennett's hands. Of course, it's no surprise that the owner/GM likes guys who he picked high and will pay big money.

It is noteworthy that Jerry would single out an undrafted guy like Amendola, who beat Jenkins one-on-one at least three times and caught everything thrown his way.

"He's real refined," Jerry said of the Wes Welker wannabe. "He really runs routes well, and he's got that quickness. He does and will separate. He will be able to separate in the NFL."

It's way too early to declare that Amendola will make the team, but Miles Austin better be ready to fight for his job.

Cricket puts the 'full' in fullback
1:27 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Fullback Deon "Cricket" Anderson isn't participating in the rookie minicamp, but he attended the workout. He sported a red Stewie T-shirt and looked a lot like the Kool-Aid Man.

You see, Cricket has swelled up to 260 pounds, 20 more than he weighed as a rookie. He plans to slim back down to 240 by September. What the heck has he been eating to get so big?

"Children, cattle, crickets," he deadpanned.

Cricket reports that his surgically repaired rotator cuff is just fine. He's been lifting a lot at the dinner table and in the weight room.

"I had 405 on the bench the other day," Cricket said, flexing just in case I didn't believe him.

Cowboys want Martellus to watch his mouth
1:17 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Martellus Bennett learned one major difference between college and the pros within 24 hours after being drafted.

"In college, if you get in trouble, they call your mom," the ex-Texas A&M tight end said. "Here, if you get in trouble, they call you."

Some Valley Ranch folks got their britches in a bunch about an innocent Jessica Simpson joke Bennett made during his media conference call minutes after he was drafted. TE coach John Garrett called Bennett to let him know that Jessica jokes are a no-no around these parts.

"I apologized," Bennett said. "I didn't mean to be rude."

Bennett, an athletic 6-6, 260-pound second-rounder who showed off his strong hands during this morning's workout, will still be a quote machine. He had a couple gems today.

He limped around after catching a seam route, prompting me to ask later if he tweaked something. "Nah, man, I got hit in the kids."

And Bennett, who actually declared for the NBA draft as a high school senior before withdrawing his name, used an interesting comparison to describe his love for the sport.
"Football is my wife," he said, "and basketball will always be my mistress."

Quick hits from camp ...
1:52 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Albert Breer E-mail News tips

Here's five observations I came away with ...

1) Bennett's a beast: Second-round Martellus Bennett is a load and flashed some athleticism in the passing skeleton and one-on-ones. Seems to do a good job, in most cases, of catching the ball away from his body and looks like he could develop into a matchup nightmare.

2) Jenkins rough around the edges: No one got more individual attention than first-rounder Mike Jenkins, and part of it was that he was getting beat on a fairly regular basis. You can see the athleticism, the ability to turn and run, the ability to sink his hips and explode ... but it needs to be more consistently. He'd look great one play, and very, very average the next. He had real trouble catching the ball.

3) Amendola shines: I know Timmy already addressed this, but there was a whole lot to like about Danny Amendola (and not just because I wrote about him this morning). He runs sharp, precise routes, gets in and out of his breaks quickly, and knows how to set up a DB. Plus, he didn't drop a ball. It's worth noting that Jenkins couldn't stop him once in one-on-ones, at least in the three instances I say the two match up.

4) Jones' wheels: Jerry called Felix Jones' style "smooth" and there might not be a better way to describe it. He almost looks like he's gliding, and not running out there, and you can see his change-of-direction skills. Felix looked fairly natural catching the ball for the most part, save for a couple drops. Tashard Choice had a couple early drops, but rebounded late and showed the skills in the passing game he flashed as a collegian.

5) Garrett's involvement: One thing's pretty clear here -- Jason Garrett is not simply the overseer of the offense. He has his hands in everything. And it seems like he can coach every position, which is something that I remember being impressive about Bill Belichick when I covered the Patriots. Garrett sets a pace for practice -- a quick one -- and his guys seem to respond.

The Cowboys may go with 2 FB instead of 7 WR. The WR the would be
cut would be Austin because his main job was kickoff returns. Austin
would stay though if Terry Glenn was not able to play. That extra
player could go to FB or add a 9th LB or even a 3rd QB.

There's a few that might possibly make it. The ones that seem to be generating the interest are:

Danny Amendola WR Texas Tech
Mark Bradford WR Stanford
Darrell Robertson DE Georgia Tech

Of all the UDFAs, are there any that you expect to make the team? It
would seem that WRs and Safety have the best shot, maybe Robertson. I
just don't see much chance of the others displacing an existing
player.

Being rumored that Philly signed him now.... Info is from another Cowboys forum.

DallasCowboys.com and the Dallas Morning News Blog is not reporting
Adarius Bowman being signed by the Cowboys. But trust me, TO
alongside Danny Amendola, a Wes Welker clone outta Texas Tech;
Witten, Bennett, with either Barber or F. Jones in the Backfield is
potentially more potent than New England's offense of last year.

The thought of TO, Bowman, Bennett and Witten all on the field at the

This draft is not just measured by the players drafted, it's also
measured by the players signed as Undrafted Free Agents that end up
making the team. They also count as rookies. I say it's a given that
the first five picks make the team, the 6th rounder Walden is up in the
air and could be a sleeper or could be a flop. Otherwise, this crop of
players looks very good and I see a lot of upgrades being made across
the board.

Check out the ones I see already:

Julius Jones < Felix Jones
Tyson Thompson < Tashard Choice
Anthony Fasano < Martellus Bennett
Jacques Reeves < Mike Jenkins
Nate Jones < Orlando Scandrick

Basically we've upgraded significantly at RB, CB, and at backup TE...

That's awesome!

There are two schools of thought up here, OU and OSU. Everyone knows
in the state how good Adarius Bowman is. He was a good student, kept
up his grades, kept his nose clean. Goes home to celebrate his great
season and his ol' buddies bring him down a few notches by suggesting
he do the chronic dance or so. Yeah, he was stupid. Was it probably
once? Not sure. The likelihood of this being a habit or a continual
problem, not likely at all. Will this guy play with a chip on his
shoulder in minicamps, preseason and all that? Heck yeah. This guy
not only makes a team, but gets a good contract better in comparison
than Crayton received eventually. Bowman played in a pro style
offense against quality defenses in the Big 12 and has succeeded
admirably. He's going to shock a lot of people in a good way.

overturned.

There will be lots of PR jobs now.

Can he sign Leonard Little and Ray Lewis?

Any of those players would have catapulted the Cowboys draft to an A or

Any one besides me remember his press conference when he signed with

Daniel Polk spent much of his Sunday answering calls and watching coverage of the NFL Draft just waiting for opportunity to finally buzz his cell phone.

“It was nerve-racking watching names go up on the board,” Polk said. “The best thing to do was to be patient and let God take care of the situation for me.”
Polk didn’t have time to consider his patience as the seventh round neared its close.

“Several teams started to call me about possibly drafting me,” he said. “Buffalo called a few times and then Arizona and St. Louis. They told me to be on standby.”

But Polk’s name was never called, but his night was far from over as each of what the NFL calls “priority” free agents were contacted.
“It (being drafted) was something that I wanted,” he said. “But what really matters is getting an opportunity. This is a dream come true.”
A native of Dallas, Polk narrowed his choices to two teams before making his decision to sign with the hometown Dallas Cowboys.

“It came down to Miami or Dallas and what I thought was the best situation for me,” Polk said. “It was a long wait, but we finally got it done.”
Polk’s opportunity with the Cowboys will come in a special teams role and will hinge on his ability to adapt to the wide receiver role, but he has a good example to follow.

“I’ve been compared to (current Dallas receiver) Patrick Crayton a lot,” he said. “It’s the same situation for me and I’ll have to play special teams, too.”

Crayton, a converted quarterback from NAIA Northwestern Oklahoma State, was picked in the seventh round in 2004 and has blossomed into a starter at the wide receiver position.

Polk capped a brilliant four-year career with Midwestern State by becoming the school’s first NCAA Division II first-team All American and was the only quarterback in all of college football to pass for more 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 last season.

Polk led NCAA Division II’s top offense while carrying a 153.74 pass efficiency rating after completing 65.7 percent of his passes (188-of-286) for 2,487 yards and 16 touchdowns. He threw just five interceptions.
Polk also rushed for more than 1,000 yards for the second-straight season finishing with 1,069 yards on 147 carries with a school-record 19 touchdowns.

He also finished fourth in the nation with 322.6 total yards of offense, 12th in scoring with 10.4 points per game, 14th in pass efficiency rating at 153.7 and 32nd in rushing yards.

Polk’s 3,556 yards of total offense in 2007 also stand as a school record.
He finished his career as MSU’s all-time leader in rushing yards (3,560), total offense yards (8,276), touchdowns scored (44) and touchdowns accounted for with 82.

IRVING, Texas
- This sort of tickles me.

The Cowboys needed an infusion of speed on this team. And they got that by selecting Arkansas running back Felix Jones.

The Cowboys needed a starting quality cornerback to cover their backsides against Adam Jones acting a fool or failing to convince NFL commissioner Roger Goodell he's a changed man. And they got that by selecting South Florida cornerback Mike Jenkins.

The Cowboys created a need the day before this weekend's 2008 NFL Draft at tight end by trading 2006 second-round pick Anthony Fasano to Miami, along with linebacker Akin Ayodele, for a fourth-round draft choice. And they got that by grabbing Texas A&M tight end Martellus Bennett.

The Cowboys understood by splurging on niche running back Felix Jones and deciding not to invite back Julius Jones and Tyson Thompson they still had a need for a more traditional running back in case Marion Barber went down. And they got that with Georgia Tech multi-purpose back Tashard Choice.

When they saw another cornerback with a third- to fourth-round grade fall into the fifth round, they couldn't help themselves, plus knowing Adam Jones still is in NFL detention. And they went to get him, Boise State corner Orlando Scandrick.

And this team needed an infusion of kick-return talent. And brother, did they ever cover themselves there, what with Adam Jones (if available), Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins and this Sandrick kid who I see on 22 career kickoff returns in high school averaged 46.5 yards.
My guess is, most of the crack draft experts are going to give the Cowboys somewhere between a B+ and an A for this draft, which also impressively yielded third- and fourth-round picks for 2009.

Yet here was Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones and head coach Wade Phillips having to defend their draft on two fronts:

They selected Felix Jones instead of Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall.

They did not select a wide receiver in this draft.

Duck . . . did the verbal debris ever come crashing through The Ranch on Sunday. I think I saw Toto at one point flying by the breezeway windows.

Why, how could you guys select Felix Jones, who couldn't even start in college and isn't a 25-carry back, ahead of Mendenhall, who lit up the Big 10 this past season? He's a franchise back, they cried.

Why how could you not select a wide receiver, ya bunch of dimwits, what with Terrell Owens turning 35 in December, Terry Glenn in limbo and prime evidence supplied in the playoff loss for what can happen if those two aren't full speed?

For goodness sakes, came the cries, one guy so incensed he went right for the jugular, saying Jerry Jones is no Scott Pioli. Man.

Ain't it great. Everyone can be a GM for these two days, even if they didn't spend millions hiring people to help make all these player evaluations and hand out advice.

So me, help me here, first with this wide receiver backlash. How many wide receivers were drafted in the first round? That would be none, and for good reason. Nary a one was worth it.

How many of last year's first-round wide receivers caught more than 37 passes their rookie seasons? That would be two, Dwayne Bowe of Kansas City (70) and the draft's second pick, Calvin Johnson of Detroit (48). That's it. Heck, Patrick Crayton had 50 last year.

So what do you think the odds are any one of those nine receivers drafted in the second round could come in here as rookies to catch more than 50 passes? Or what are the odds any of those four receivers selected in the third round could do that?

Or better yet, which one of those 13 receivers taken in the second and third rounds would be good enough in 2008 to steal a good amount of Jason Witten's 96 receptions from last year?

You catch my drift. As Bill Parcells always was quick to remind us in this player acquisition business, you need necessity to meet head on with opportunity. There was little opportunity this year. The odds also were against any of these less-than-first-round-quality receivers being immediately better than Crayton, Sam Hurd and Austin Miles. And guarantee you they didn't have more upside than Isaiah Stanback.

You don't take guys, just to take them, and if you do, then you're probably doing a redux next year if a first-round guy is available. Or if you had, might that have discouraged you if, say come July, Cincinnati decides to trade Chad Johnson or Detroit decides to trade Roy Williams?

And as Stephen Jones said, the Cowboys still are willing to deal for a veteran receiver if someone wants to deal reasonably, which is something Jerry Jones said didn't happen over the weekend.

Plus, while the return of Glenn is certainly no given, there is no give-up there, either.

"When we went into the draft, there was no looking through rose-colored glasses we could replace Terry at receiver," Jerry Jones said. "Where was the realistic way we could find starting types to add to the roster? Running back and corner. Those were the realistic places to go do it, and I think we got it done . . . I think we got it done."

Yes, the Cowboys are limited stretching the field if Glenn is not available, although they were fine last year until Terrell Owens suffered the high ankle sprain late in the season. Because you know what, the Cowboys capably stretched the field with Witten, finishing with 455 points, second most in franchise history. And I'll be darn, despite having once owned Hall of Fame quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, despite having a high-powered offense in the early '80's with Danny White in charge, Tony Romo set the club's single-season record with 4,211 passing yards his first full season starting in the NFL. How, pray tell, did he ever do it without Glenn the first 15 games?

This sort of reminds me of 2001 when the Cowboys were in bad need of a quarterback, but had no first round pick, so they reached in the second round for one, selecting Quincy Carter against some of their better judgments. How'd that work out?

Now then, if you'll just put those veins back in your neck and think a minute, the Cowboys did add speed to this offense - to this team - if you are willing to think a little outside the box.
Think Felix Jones.

And do not think traditional running back. Think Reggie Bush knockoff. Think lining up in the backfield. Think lining up in the slot. Think lining up wide. Think end arounds. Think reverses. Think defenses having to do whatever is necessary to keep him from getting in the open field.
Felix Jones will stretch the field. Felix Jones will threaten defenses. Felix Jones will scare the dickens out of coverage units.

As Jerry Jones was quick to point, "This is the most speed we've had since . . . well, since Joey Galloway." And he's talking young speed.

Which means, the solution to the second problem many had with this Cowboys draft is the answer to the first complaint. Mendenhall is no Felix Jones. He might turn out to be a franchise running back for Pittsburgh, but he would be no complement to Marion Barber, the guy so many think is the Cowboys' franchise running back.

(Timeout: I remember this e-mailer warning about drafting a running back. He warned everyone will fall in love with the guy, and suddenly those who wanted Barber to overtake Julius Jones would immediately begin crying for the new guy, Felix Jones as it turns out, to overtake Barber. He wrote, you watch and see.)

Mendenhall and Barber would be salt and salt. Gotta have you some pepper. Step aside, let Felix season this dish.

"I could see how he could bring a lot of wow," Jerry Jones said of his pre-draft thoughts. "He would bring a different dimension."

Having handed Jerry Jones a little secret truth serum, he said going into the draft he had Felix Jones on his mind, and that if he could have even given up picks to assure drafting him before the process begun, he would have done that. That's how much the Cowboys wanted to add this kind of speed to their offense.

"I could see how he fit in," Jerry Jones said.

The Cowboys also worried how Mendenhall would handle the time-share approach to the position. There were no concerns with Felix Jones. That's what he did in college. Plus, Felix Jones is a worker, and as you can see, that's become big on the Cowboys' draft criteria.

And I hear there is this argument the Cowboys didn't draft their board, that they took the lower-rated back. I'm told, if they graded players on a scale from 1 to 100 (and they don't, my example), if Mendenhall was a 93, then Felix Jones was a 92. Come on, what are we doing here, splitting hairs? You take what you need, and this team needed speed, and the Cowboys knew darn well they weren't going to get it at wide receiver. There was no first-round speed there. And while Mendenhall is no turtle, he's one of those one-cut runners. Felix Jones has the necessary wiggle to make more than one guy miss.

Now I would have protested Felix Jones had he cost the Cowboys a starting-quality corner. He didn't. I would have protested Felix Jones had the Cowboys not paired him in this draft with another running back. They did, the Cowboys also selecting Choice, giving them three running backs they seemed convinced will make their game-day 45-man roster.

So what's the beef, unless of course, you've just got to beef. And if that's the case, and makes you happy, please, by all means, go beef.

But if you do, you just might be missing the boat.

09:29 PM CDT on Sunday, April 27, 2008

IRVING – The Dallas Cowboys would have liked to have found another Terrell Owens in the draft this year.

That never happened.

"We're working on cloning right now though," coach Wade Phillips joked after the Cowboys made three picks Sunday with not a receiver among them.

The chatter about trading for Roy Williams, Anquan Boldin or Chad Johnson was just that – chatter. Same with drafting a receiver in the first round or possibly the second round.

LOUIS DeLUCA / DMN
The only help Dallas Cowboys Tony Romo (left) and Terrell Owens got for the passing game in the draft was tight end Martellus Bennett.

The Cowboys briefly contemplated a big move up in the second round to take Indiana receiver James Hardy, who went to Buffalo with the 41st pick, but owner and general manager Jerry Jones could not find an ally in the Cowboys' draft room to get momentum going on a trade.
Receiver was then crossed off the need list.

"When we went into this draft, there was no looking through rose-colored glasses that we were going to solve our second receiver challenge the way we'd like to, offsetting Terrell," Jones said. "That was a little unrealistic because it's so hard to get receivers to play at that level no matter how accomplished they are."

The five trades the Cowboys made Sunday – landing them 2009 third- and fourth-round picks from Detroit and Jacksonville – were made with a receiver in mind.

The Cowboys have six draft picks in the first four rounds next year. Given this team's proclivity for draft-day trading, they could have enough pieces to move up and take a top-notch receiver.

"We just didn't want to push it this year with this not being a deep draft for receivers," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "You can't make something out of what's not there."

The Cowboys acknowledge the chances of making a deal for one of the aforementioned receivers has lessened with the draft being over, but they are ready if an opportunity arises.

In all likelihood, the same group that ended last year will be the same group Tony Romo has this season – just a year older. Owens turns 35 in December. Glenn, who played only four regular-season snaps in 2007, turns 34 in July and has a cranky knee.

The Cowboys continue to speak positively about what Glenn can do in 2008 but admit there is no guarantee he can return to the 1,000-yard form he had in 2005 and '06.

They gave Patrick Crayton, whose reception total increased for a fourth-straight year in 2007, a $6 million signing bonus, and they like the potential of Sam Hurd, Miles Austin and Isaiah Stanback, a 2007 fourth-rounder.

"I've got to go ahead and say this," Jerry Jones said. "If not between the younger receivers that we've got and Terry Glenn, if you want to say we can pull one out of the hat on campus, as Bill would say, it's possible for us to pull one out of the hat on campus."

If not, there's always next year.

08:56 PM CDT on Sunday, April 27, 2008

From staff reports Day 2 of the NFL draft had a similar look to Day 1 for the Cowboys.
A running back and cornerback were two of the team's three selections.

The Cowboys drafted Georgia Tech RB Tashard Choice in the fourth round, a day after selecting Arkansas RB Felix Jones.

At cornerback, Dallas took Boise State's Orlando Scandrick in the fifth round. The team had chosen South Florida CB Mike Jenkins on Saturday.

"This draft was deep at running back, deep in corners and deep in offensive linemen," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said.

The Cowboys' final pick of the draft was Middle Tennessee defensive end Erik Walden, who the team projects will play outside linebacker in the 3-4.

Dallas also made five trades on Sunday, picking up two picks in the 2009 draft in the process.

Impressed by toughness: Most draft prognosticators had Walden going undrafted. But just last week, he was one of 30 national prospects to visit Valley Ranch, and he had a hunch that the experts might be wrong.

"That's the expectation I had for myself," said Walden, who was chosen in the sixth round. "I thought I'd go in a late round, if not be a priority free agent. I was preparing myself for both."

Coach Wade Phillips was impressed with how Walden battled through turf toe and remained productive as a senior. The two-time first-team All-Sun Belt pick should be able to contribute on special teams right away, Phillips said.

No looking back: Scandrick, who the Cowboys selected in the fifth round, doesn't regret leaving Boise State after his junior season.

"I mean, when I chose to come out, I stopped debating it and just decided to live with it," he said. "Teams told me I would be a fourth-round pick."

Upcoming minicamp: The six draft picks, selected veteran players and soon-to-be signed undrafted free agents will report to Valley Ranch this weekend for a minicamp.

"There will be a lot of individual work obviously because there won't be but 20-something guys," Phillips said.

The players will practice Friday and Saturday and have meetings Sunday before returning home.

The veteran minicamp will be held in mid-June at the conclusion of the organized team activities.

Capable of wowing? In the off-season, Jones said he wanted to find a wow player. After selecting six players in the NFL draft this weekend, the Cowboys owner was asked if he had done so.

"I think Felix [Jones] is certainly a wow player," Jones said. "[Martellus] Bennett has a chance to be, the issue is when."

More to him: A day after Felix Jones was painted as a complementary piece incapable of carrying a heavy load offensively, Jerry Jones carefully emphasized that his first-round draft pick is not simply a part-time player. Felix Jones had only one 20-carry game as a collegian, but his new boss said that his size is not a concern.

"He's 6-feet tall, 207 pounds," Jerry Jones said. "Y'all probably heard this, gathered this, but he's thick in the bottom, from the waist down. And we've had another one that was this size, not in height, but about that weight that carried the ball 25, 30 times a ballgame – Emmitt Smith."

Briefly: The following uniform numbers were given to the first-day draft picks: No. 28, Jones; No. 31, Jenkins, which makes official Roy Williams' move to No. 38; and No. 80, Bennett. ... Marion Barber's younger brother, Minnesota S Dominique Barber, was drafted in the sixth round by the Houston Texans. The brothers are the son of former Jets running back Marion Barber Jr. ... The Cowboys did not draft a receiver, but they agreed to terms with Texas Tech's Danny Amendola as an undrafted free agent on Sunday. He caught 109 passes for 1,245 yards and six touchdowns in 2007 ... The Cowboys also added Hampton defensive end Marcus Dixon. Dixon spent 15 months in prison for aggravated child molestation and statutory rape before the Georgia Supreme Court ordered his immediate release in 2004. He attended Hampton, where he was a three-time captain, and had six sacks as a senior.

Staff writers Todd Archer, Calvin Watkins and Albert Breer contributed to this report.

Deal for Pacman gets slight modification
The NFL approved the Cowboys' trade with Tennessee for Pacman Jones on Sunday, but there is a slight twist to the compensation.

Should Jones get reinstated and face a subsequent suspension before the season begins, the Cowboys will receive a fifth-round pick from the Titans in 2009. The only way the Cowboys will recoup a fourth-round pick from Tennessee is if Jones is never reinstated.

The Titans will receive the Cowboys' sixth-round pick if Jones makes it through the season. Jones signed a four-year deal before the trade became official, although the Cowboys will hold the option on the final year.

I don't think any team in the league in this day and age can have too many corners.

I'm ready for the season to start!

The Cowboys added two cornerbacks in the draft, Michael Jenkins in the first round and Orlando Scandrick in the fifth round, and finally traded for Pacman Jones, leaving some - OK, at the very least Timmy Mac - to winder if the Cowboys are preparing to say goodbye to Terence Newman once he plays out the final year of his contract in 2008.

Preposterous, but we'll let executuve vice president Stephen Jones have a say.

"Terence is a guy we want here. Period," Jones said of their 2003 first-rounder and a Pro Bowler in 2007.

The Cowboys would like to kick up talks with Newman's agent in the future. Jones did not sound the least but concerned about Newman turning 30 in September.

"I think Terence Newman is playing for as long as we want to sign him for," Jones said. "He takes great care of himself. He's a first-class guy. He's everything you want in a football player."

Height: 6-37/8 | Weight: 255 | 40-Time: 4.75 Strengths:
A smooth athlete...Is explosive and quick...Plays faster than he times...Great pass rusher off the edge...Has a rangy frame..Is active and aggressive with a non-stop motor...Excellent in pursuit with a burst to close...Fluid and has some potential in coverage...Offers some versatility..Smart and a hard worker with solid intangibles.

Weaknesses:
Undersized and lacks the ideal bulk you look for...Has trouble shedding blocks...Is not stout at the point of attack and can be run at...Needs to get stronger...On the ground too much...Limited repertoire of pass rush moves...Can be manhandled by massive offensive linemen...He was not all that productive prior to his senior year.

Notes:
'Tweener who will either need to add weight or make a position change..Could be either a situational pass rusher or outside linebacker depending on scheme...Best fit at the next level will probably be with a team that primarily runs a 3-4 defense.
