While there is no single/reliable source of information on this topic,
there are a bunch of places one can look.

The link below is a list of such web pages:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/DCBadminton/links/Where_to_play_Badmin_0011\

Basically, if you want to know about where/when to play in a specific
past of the DC / Northern VA / Maryland area, and you have particular
needs (metro access, etc. etc.) please post a question here, and
someone will respond with specific guidance.

Cheers,

I'd like to play somewhere in NW DC during the day or early eve (i.e., 6-8 pm) on Mondays, Tuesday, or Wednesdays.  I'm not aware of any options, but if I'm missing something, please let me know.

nice story Julia.

It reminded me of the new gym Rockville City has opened. I was quite peeved
that I would have to buy a new gym pass for this gym, where I already have a
Rockville pass for the Twinbrook facility. moreover, this new gym also
offers
badminton from 3-6pm on Sundays!!
Actually, they give you a "break", if you buy a dual pass, you get both
for $50
or so. But given that both PG county and Montgomery county have a system
where
you pay for the system, not for the gym, I think this is outrageous.

Maybe we can start an email campaign to see if we can change their mind.

Since not everybody knows about that new gym, it's called
Thomas Farm Community Center, and you can find it on
the badminton list I maintain
       http://www.astro.umd.edu/~teuben/badminton/localplay.html
as number 18 on that list.

For those checking this list, if you see some outdated information,
let me know please,

peter

PS: the combo pass is far worse than I thought. I pay $35 for
Twinbrook (being a non-rockville resident). But a combo pass
is $90. Yipes. Even at $50 that's a no-go for me.

Anyone interested as the weather starts to get warmer (ignore the ice on the ground! LOL)

I am thinking about buying a badminton net, rackets, shuttlecocks and then getting a few interested people to play.

Location would be in my subdivision here in Bowie and/or the open field in Alexandria at Cameron Station.

Let me know if you're interested.  Are there any other active Badminton meetups through MEetup.com?

Ginger,
i fear not too many on this list wait for the winds to settle
to play a game of badminton, we all play indoors. But, the good
news is that I have a little club in Glenn Dale, right next to
Bowie, where we play regularly on Saturdays. The website
is http://www.astro.umd.edu//badminton/glenndale/
Right now we're in a basketball gap, but we pick up the
pace on March 21.

The below meet up plays Badminton in a Racket ball court so you may want to

Subject: a ladder/ranking system for DC area ? trying it out in Glenn Dale Saturday tournament
teuben58
Send Email Send Email

Hello all,
I've been tinkering with the idea of a ladder/ranking system for
badminton in
our area. There are various variations on this theme, e.g. the Swiss
Ladder system
   http://www.worldbadminton.com/text/swissLadder.htm

In addition to that, we could also use an ELO based (like the Chess people
do) ranking system, that keeps a running ranking score of your games
and can even be used in doubles. Check out
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system#Theory
and
  http://www.chessrankings.com/theory.aspx

With this email i'd like to solicit ideas.

I am planning to try this out at the small tournament I'm organizing
in the Glenn Dale Rec Center gym this coming Saturday (May 9).
Between about 10.30am and 4pm we are hosting a small tournament. You are
welcome to contact me if you are really interested to play,
but i should add these caveats:
- we only have 3 courts and I have to limit the entries (i..e there
    might be a waiting list)
- the level is very recreational, though we plan to play in A and B
(A=C/D dcopen level at best; B=recreational/kids/no tourney experience
and if enough kids we might do seperate J (junior) level)
- fee is between $5 and $10 for the day
- prizes are fun prizes, no medals or trophies.
- we play with Yonex-2000 plastic shuttles, but for the finals we might
use AS-50 feather. The finals are between the top 4 players in the ladder
by the end of the tournament
- if you're really interested in helping with this ladder system, we
might be
able to bypass that waiting list :-)

Hey Peter,

Interesting idea!

But let me first ask - what were you thinking as the purpose/intent of setting
up a ranking system specifically for the DC area?

And btw, quite a few folks (including myself) are off to get our butts kicked
at the Boston Open this weekend, and enjoying the process, so will not be join
you at Glenn Dale :)

Cheers,
