Re: [Cycle_Hitchin] Bedford Road, Hitchin

I have been in touch with my Priory Ward (NHDC) and South Hitchin (HCC) councillors a number of times on cycling matters and unfortunately they do not show any great enthusiasm for cycling matters.

In other parts of Hertfordshire (e.g. Watford, Wellwyn/Hatfield) things seem to be better, presumably because there is more political will than in North Herts.

It is therefore important that plenty of people keep raising cycling matters with their councillors at regular intervals. On other matters history shows that they do respond in the end.

ctclogo small.gifDear all,

We have now written to the designers of the Bedford Road / Old Park Road works three times. Each time we have said the same thing – do what the 1998 Hitchin Transport Plan and the 1999 Cycle Network plan say, namely restore the gyratory to two way working and / or close parts of it to private motor traffic.

At the same time we have kept up a dialogue with the designers in the hope that if they ignore us and plough ahead with their pavement conversion proposals, we can at least win some improvements.

After six months, three letters and about 30 pages of detailed comments they have taken on board absolutely NOTHING. Well, I tell a lie, they have agreed to extend a dropped kerb but that is such a trivial change that it does not merit a mention.

Those of you on the Cycle Hitchin e-group can read HCC’s letter(240 kB) here, and our response (1 MB) to it here.

Please try to find some time to contact your councillors and MP, to press them to follow their own plans and guidelines, and to take on our comments. That is all we have asked, we are not being unreasonable.

Find how to contact your councillors here: district and county ...

and your MP here: Peter Lilley.

Regards
