OK, but you know the old saying, "careful what you ask for". I'll not abuse the privilege... much.

Thanks again,

series of climbing-based rides designed to work on things I've found
that make climbing more enjoyable. Rather than a shootout to the top,
these will have more of a training focus--try different things to see

this site and on the Velo calendar. The first will be Feb. 10, Sun.,
9:00 at Ryan and Cohasset (the end of the airport) to talk and do all
or part of Cohasset. March and April will focus on the Wildflower

over there. See you on the roads!

Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.

The ABC Quick Check is a standard preride bicycle check, takes only a minute to do, and is taught in League of American Bicyclist classes.  The full text and long explanations are available on many websites.
hth,
Barry

Before Your Ride: The ABC Quick Check*

So... you're going for a bike ride. Your body will get a workout, and so will your bike. Have you checked your bike for mechanical safety? Timely bicycle maintenance can prevent a serious accident. Here is the "ABC Quick Check", which you should do every time you ride.

A is for Air.
Check Mark

  • Check tire pressure. Tires should be inflated to the rated pressure noted on the sidewall (pounds/square inch). Use a gauge to verify you have reached the recommended rate.
  • Check for damage to the tire sidewalls and/or tread. Sidewall damage is common if the brakes aren't adjusted properly. If the bands of the tire are showing below the surface, you need a new tire -- now!

B is for Brakes.

  • Check the brakes for paid wear and adjustment. Visually check the brake-block pad. If less than 1/8" of rubber shows at any place, replace the brake-block/pad assembly. Make sure the brake blocks are parallel to and aligned with the side of the rim when applied.
  • Check cables and housing. Cables need to travel smoothly. If the cables stick, apply lubrication at the ends of the housing and work it in by applying the brakes several times. Frayed cables should be replaced.

C is for Crank Set.

  • Check the crank set. The crank set consists of the bottom bracket, the crank arms, and chainrings. To do this check, take the left and right crank arms in your hands and attempt to move them sideways. If both move, you have a problem with the bottom bracket. If only one moves, the individual crank arm is loose and must be secured. A loose crank arm should never be ridden.

Quick is for Quick Releases.

  • Quick-release hubs need to be tight, but not too tight. The proper pressure is obtained by pushing on the quick-release lever so it leaves an impression on the palm of your hand. The closed lever should face up and back to minimize the chance of catching on anything while you ride.
  • Quick-release brakes, which are opened when removing or installing wheels, need to be in the closed position. When closed, check to make sure the brake pads aren't rubbing the rims.
  • (Quick-release seat clamps, on mountain bikes and some hybrid bikes, need to be in the closed position. Check to be sure your seat is at the correct height. - ed.)

Check is for a brief, slow ride to check that your derailleurs and shift levers are working properly.

Many items of the ABC Quick Check can be done visually; others require just a brief physical check. If you find that your bike needs adjustments beyond your ability, enlist the professional mechanics at your local bike shop.

Hi folks...

Wow!  I feel like I stepped on a landmine!  I do appreciate your comments of concern, maybe of frustration and a great deal of question - why and why now??

Just a few things off the top of my head:

1st - Gino, I didn't want to post further details to the location of the meeting, due to the 'possible' number of folks interested in attending; more interested - larger room, not so many - someone's house.

2nd - I (and group) have NO intentions of undermining Chico Velo or what Chico Velo has done for all of us... or disrespecting Chico Velo, Rodney or Ed and his situation.  (and I'm sure others of whom I'm working with feel the same way - to the best of my knowledge)
Do I support Ed - certainly, as a matter of fact, with great admiration.  Am I a member of Chico Velo, heck yeah!  ... along with any and everyother organized group out there - and many yahoo groups too!  I pay my dues, I respect and contribute to initiatives, i.e. Chico Velo Cyclist Care Fund, volunteer at the Corsa sponsored crit, participate in as many cycling events and related events as I can, regardless of it's sponsorship or representation.

3rd - to your inquiry Rodney, I DO have an interest in assisting with cycling in the community... more than I already do now; currently offering folks to ride with me in a group atmosphere and here pretty quick, offering skill classes in association with CycleSport.

4th - I respect everyone, what they believe and am willing to listen and / or help in anyway I can - thus, I try to be as open minded, polite and genuine in all of my communication... at least I try.  I try not to post offensive or damaging messages.  Gino, you do not promote unity in your comment 'no shit'... Rodney, your message could have been more of inquiry and concern, vs a tone of frustration.  We all want the same thing.

5th - I have only had the opportunity to live in Chico for 7 years... and I love it, as does my family.  Over the course of the last 5, I have fallen back in love with cycling, as many of us have.  I'm relatively new and do not have any history with anyone or any group... not until now have I felt 'political pressure' or 'ill feelings' as a member of the cycling community.  We all want the same thing - a great, supportive cycling community... and that means different things to different people.  If 'some' of those things are not met by Chico Velo, AND, supposedly concerns for those needs have been addressed with Chico Velo and dismissed as... whatever... unimportant or not worthy... what are we to do??

6th - Peter M, Peter H and Walt are current board members of Chico Velo... these folks along with Karen and a few others are closely tied to the history of Chico Velo, the current state of affairs and etc... if these folks are unable to persuade Chico Velo to venture into additional areas of support for cycling... I'm not sure who would.  AS A MATTER OF FACT, MY DIRECT QUESTION TO THEM WAS, ARE YOU SURE WE CAN NOT BE SUCCESSFUL IN DOING THESE THINGS AS CHICO VELO... and their reply was CERTAINLY NOT.  What am I to think?  What am I to do?  Where do I put my efforts?

7th - Not to be a moderator, but it seems as though some type of resolution must take place regarding the needs of community cyclists and Chico Velo.  Are the needs being met?  Is now the right time to question this or try to resolve this, taking into consideration Ed's situation???

I don't exactly know of all the little petty crap that may have taken place to create lines in the sand, nor do I want to know.  All I can say is that a lot can be accomplished with constructive communication and resolution.  If we could make this better for everyone, as one group, let me know how I can help.

Please feel free to call me if you have any suggestions, comments or a few choice words, should you feel the need.

I appologize for the frustration I inflicted upon you Rodney... I have the greatest respect for you, what you do and what you stand for.  I know we will continue to work together in the future as cyclists and as friends.

John

Hi folks!

This is a 'last call' for anyone who may be interested in viewing the 2007 Cycle Oregon DVD... with a possible interest in riding the event mid-September 2008.  After the showing of the DVD, we will open it up for questions and general discussion... while we nibble on snacks and sip beer or wine.

If you haven't already emailed me with interest, please do so now, as invites with pertinent information will be going out this weekend; i.e. date, time and place of showing.

I have heard from the following individuals thus far:

Tom E
Andrew
Sandra
Aimee
Tony
Clayton
Greg H
Ken
Becky

Here's a link to the event:

Have a great weekend!  Get out and ride!

Hi Everyone. So, I had a chance to go visit Ed this past weekend at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Ed is in the Spinal Injury Rehab unit of the hospital - one of the best in the nation. Ed is in excellent hands at the hospital (it's also a teaching hospital for Stanford University medical students). Ed is making slow progress each day, but his therapy and rehab are very exhausting. He is able to move his left arm slightly, but not his right arm very much. He controls his electric wheelchair with his left hand - using the little joystick on that side of the chair. His legs have involuntary movements at times - so, you'll be sitting with him, and suddenly his leg will seize and move. He can't control it.......but every time it happened, it made me smile because it sort of felt like his brain was trying to reconnect with his legs or something. He pretty much despises the hospital food - but he eats pretty well anyway - I had the opportunity to feed him yesterday and today, and it was fun listening to him describe some of the hospital food - just hilarious! But, he has folks bringing him food from the outside quite a bit, so he has some good things to eat there too. He especially likes oranges and fruit juices. Since he arrived at the hospital, he's lost 15 pounds - much of it in muscle weight. He is REALLY stoked about the weight loss though because he knows he'll be climbing better than ever!! Yes, he has hopes for getting back on his bicycle again - and the doctors there say that it could very well happen. The inflammation of his spinal cord takes at least one year to heal up - so, he has a long uncertain road ahead of him. I have told everyone this, but Ed is really a fighter - and he gives it his all in physical and occupational therapy every day - he really attacks those sessions, and I believe he would like to do more. That was great to see. They're not sure when Ed will be coming back to Chico, but it sounds likely that he could be back in February depending upon his progress.

If you have the opportunity, I would encourage you to visit Ed - even if it's just for a short visit. He really enjoys visitors. We watched the football games all day yesterday - many don't know it, but Ed is also a big football fan. It felt great just to be in his presence again......and it was very motivating too. Ed has a strong goal, and he is really striving for it. I know many of us have goals that we want to accomplish - but, as we all know, it takes hard work and perserverance.....and loads of determination. Ed has all of that and more.

Thank you all for all of your cards, letters, e-mails, donations, gifts, everything - Ed and Suzanne are exceptionally appreciative of this - as am I. Thank you all so so much.

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION RIDE!!!

I drove the ride route this afternoon and I have to say… kudos to
Mike Peavy for another outstanding, unknown, scenic cycling route,
soon to be enjoyed by many! The mountains to the west were covered
with snow… so bring your camera! The route is pretty flat, so
it's `fixie' friendly. You will want to bring 2 water bottles and
some money for the general store at the half way point. Besides the
store, there isn't much of anything out there – check your saddle
bag for tubes and air… AND bring some fuel for yourself.

The weather forecast is for CLEAR / SUNNY skies, in the upper 50s!
Holy cow! …could it be fingerless glove weather again???

See you at One Mile to carpool!

Laundry List:

Interested in a MTB guided tour in Moab, May 2008??  Contact Ken Gelatti at kgelatti23@...

Cycle Oregon 2008?  Would you like to view the 2007 DVD and have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the week long ride from others who have completed this event?  Contact John at wiesinger.john@...  I'm gathering a 'list' of interested cyclists.  Registration 2/1/08!

Does racing and racing tactics interest you... but maybe feel a little intimidated by the topic?  Perhaps you would like to learn how to work in a 4 person paceline, to catch the break or sprint from the group... if there is an interest out there for some get-togethers to discuss and practice these skills, I would be willing to help organize such events.  Shoot me an email if this sounds like you.  wiesinger.john@...   If we do this, an experienced cyclist/racer would help us... NOT me!  Ha!

Would you, or someone you know, like to ride or learn to ride in a group, starting at 14 to 16 mph, for fun and fitness?  Maybe around the park to start?  Learn the difference between a double paceline, single paceline, a road bike or a mtn bike??  I'm just throwing the question out there to see what the need might be.  Greg Hollis and I may be putting something together for this need.  Contact Greg or myself, with your ideas or comments.  wiesinger.john@... or gr8tgreg@...

Have a great week and weekend... stay dry and upright!

Hammer On!
