CycleSport sent out another exploratory group to find just the right ride to
take the place of the Bullard's Bar ride that is scheduled for July 18 or 19th
(I can't remember which). Anyway, a group of us set out for Almanor to explore
their multitude of off road "bike trails". Not knowing this area very well, the
trails we took do not meet the criteria for a CycleSport sponsored ride. For a
perfect example of a CycleSport ride you would have to ask anyone who did the
Redding mountain bike ride up to Shasta Dam. That is what we are looking for,
but in another hopefully cooler area for the summer. The Almanor ride (we
tried) did not offer enough shade, the trail was a gravel road (not single
track) and the grade was way too steep even for a moderately good road rider.
So, here is my question. Does anyone know of a mountain bike ride (other than
Susanville) that is as perfect as the Redding ride? I will continue to look in
and around Chester but it would help if someone reading this report could help
me out. Thanks for your help

Will take a look at the XC ski area up at Colby Meadows (Butte Meadows)  Haven't done a ride up there for a couple of years, though I don't recall it being very technical.  Combo of single track and dirt road (if you go up to Colby Mt. Lookout).  Total mileage to the Lookout from the Jonesville parking lot is about 5 miles with some alternate return routes so it is not just an out and back.  Downsides:  It would be another trip to (kinda) the same area as June.  The trail starts at 5000' but the total climb is only about 600' over 5 miles.  If you take the single track, there are a couple of steep, but short, hills back up to the dirt road, but they can easily be hike-a-biked.  There is a 4 mile area (with multiple trails) along Colby Creek that is prohibited for motorized vehicles.  The last mile or so up to Colby Lookout is on dirt road that might have to be shared with motorized vehicles.  Let me know if you want  to check it out.  Larry Crisman, who has been leading the Mellow rides knows this area like the back of his hand.  He put in and marked several of the trails and rides up there often in the summer.
Ken A.
I have no vested interest in this since the July trip is planned on the same weekend as the Fall River Century, which I plan to do.

It's not in the Chester / Almanor area, but the "Butcher ranch trail" in
Downieville is just what you're looking for. Awsome single track, with
options for ride up or drive up, followed by one of the most epic down
hills around. The ride ends right in town very near a cool little pizza
place for a post ride get together.

Hi Everyone!! This weekend, we have a little Omnium going on called the Rumpstomper Omnium (named after the infamous mountain bike race in Annadel State Park in the 1980s). Hope you can make one, two or all three stages - whatever you would like to do! Details below:

Stages of the 2009 Rumpstomper Omnium:

Saturday, June 6th - Neal Road DOWNHILL Time Trial - 9:00AM (Race #1 in the Chico Downhill TT Series) (Race #1 in Rumpstomper Omnium)
Saturday, June 6th - Chico Airport LONG-Course Criterium - 6:00PM - (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series) (Race #2 in Rumpstomper Omnium)
Sunday, June 7th -  Jonesville Road Race - 8:00AM - Trophy Event - (Race #2 in the Chico Road R.A.C.E. Series) (Final Race in Rumpstomper Omnium)

How does it work??? Okay, in this scenario, an Omnium is just a stage race using points rather than time - and you do not have to complete one stage in order to do the next stage. You garner points for each stage depending upon how you did in the stage.......and, again, in this particular case.........the MOST points wins(many Omniums reverse this and have the least amount of points winning). There WILL be a Category "A" and Category "B" - you must tell me at the start of your first stage which Category you are entering.......and no downgrades during the Omnium once you're in. Categories may be combined, changed or eliminated if not enough folks come out. Most USCF rules will apply to ALL stages - including WEAR YOUR HELMET, don't ride too much like a lunatic, and so on and so forth. Please read the section carefully at the bottom of this e-mail for all the rules pertaining to the Omnium. And remember - the only reasons we're doing this Omnium is for fun and fitness......and maybe a little competitiveness too, but nothing over-the-top please! Ride safe, have fun, try something new and challenge yourself. Anyone doing any of the stages is automatically entered in the Omnium..........but consistency in the events will be key to winning the Overall. The Rumpstomper Omnium Champion Medals will be awarded to the winner in each Category of the Omnium. The following Categories will be awarded medals:

Men's Category "A"
Men's Category "B"
Women's Category
Women's Masters 50+ Category
Men's Masters 50+ Category
And any other Category if enough folks show up!

The Point Breakdown for EACH stage:

Saturday, June 6th - Neal Road DOWNHILL Time Trial - 9:00AM:
1st = 25 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Saturday, June 6th - Chico Airport LONG-COURSE Criterium - 6:00PM:
(Prime Points do NOT count towards the Omnium.....but DO count towards the Crit Series)
1st = 25 points
2nd = 20 points
3rd = 18 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 14 points
6th = 12 points
7th = 10 points
8th = 8 points
9th = 6 points
10th = 4 points
11th = 2 points
Everyone else = 1 point

Sunday, June 7th - Jonesville Road Race - 8:00AM:
1st = 50 points
2nd = 45 points
3rd = 40 points
4th = 35 points
5th = 30 points
6th = 25 points
7th = 20 points
8th = 18 points
9th = 16 points
10th = 14 points
11th = 12 points
12th = 10 points
13th = 8 points
14th = 6 points
15th = 4 points
Everyone else = 3 points

RULES:
And Finally - ANY rider participating in ALL 3 Stages receives an additional 10 points.
Do you have to do all the stages in order to compete in the Omnium?? No - you can even do just one event and your points will still be calculated and counted in the overall. And REMEMBER - Safety comes before bragging rights, so be careful!!!
As always, the Director reserves the right to DQ anyone deemed cheating, unsafe or unsportsmanlike(no worries - just be cool like always and all will be good!!).
Tie-Breaker - If, by chance, it comes down to a TIE after the last stage of the Omnium, the highest placed finisher (of the tied competitors) in the Jonesville Road Race will be declared the Overall Winner of the Rumpstomper Omnium.

AIRPORT CRITERIUM SERIES INFORMATION:

After the great turn-out at last year's Tuesday Night Chico Airport Criterium Series, we're going to be doing them again for 2009......but starting up a bit earlier this year. For those curious, the definition of "Criterium" is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criterium

This Series starts up next Tuesday, March 10th and will go through September 15th, 2009......just before our Chico Downtown Criterium on September 20th! Registration normally starts at 5:40pm - with the event starting at 6:00pm.

How does it work???

Okay, here are a few notes for this year's Airport "Crit" Series:

1. We will be using more than 1 course for the Crits this year......including throwing in some lefty-turn Crits to get a feel for those - and some Weekend Criteriums as well. For the time being, we'll be using our standard Tuesday Night righty-turn course starting/finishing at Convair Avenue - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Chico-Airport-Tuesday-Night-Crit-Course

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - There will be a small table on the sidewalk at the Start/Finish location on Convair Avenue - just sign in at the table and you are good to go! Sign-ins start at 5:40pm -  the racing action starts at 6:00pm. We usually end the event by 7pm, at the latest - many times earlier than that - to get home before it gets too dark outside. RAIN AND WET PAVEMENT WILL ALWAYS CANCEL THE CRITERIUMS! In addition, last year we had some tremendous smoke from the Humboldt Fire in this area......which, in turn, would also cancel the Criteriums due to hazardous air quality.

3. The Category "B" races normally go for 45-50 minutes PLUS 3 laps.........while the Category "A" races go for 50-60 minutes PLUS 3 laps. There can be anywhere from 1 to 15+ Primes in the Airport Criteriums......just depends on the mood of the Dictator.....er......I mean, Director. ;)

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give this Criterium training/riding a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 45 to 60 minute practice event.

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in the Series. The point breakdown is as follows: 7-5-4-3-2-1, with an additional 1 point being given to each participant at each event. So, 7 points goes to the winner, 5 points goes to 2nd place, 4 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........in addition to 1 more point just for doing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico Airport Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Also, Prime points will be given out during each of the Crits - these are just lap prizes......but in this case, the prizes are points. We will also be having some product Primes out there this year!

7. Last year, we had just two categories during the races - Category A and Category B. However, the Series itself has even more Trophy Categories, including:

Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 40+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 40+ Category
Men's Masters 50+ Category

These are the Categories which all qualify for a Series Championship Trophy. If nobody - or very few folks are in one category - we may eliminate it and add an additional category where the numbers allow it. As usual, sandbaggers are strongly discouraged ( A Sandbagger would be a Category "A" rider entering a Category "B" event).

8. Although donations to put on these events are always very appreciated and accepted, this Series is FREE - so come on out and take advantage of some, or all, of these Criteriums in 2009!

9. The Race Director reserves the right to DQ any rider for unsafe riding or unsportsmanlike conduct at ANY time. Also, PLEASE - NO colorful language will be used out there - especially with the little kids around watching the race(we have kids out there from ages 2 to 12 watching the racing action)!! ANY rider breaking these rules can be subject to Disqualification from - not only the race - but from the entire Series. So, please - just do what ya always do and just be cool!!!!

10. Finally, remember - these Criterium events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling skills. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned Criterium at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;)  But remember - it's all in good fun!

Hope to see you out there!!

From our local cycling stud, Michael Jasinski:

  ***********
  Hey guys, I’ve just recently got my feet back under me since I graduated
and
  moved out of my place up in Chico. That all proved to be a very
bittersweet
  experience and for better or worse I’m in Rocklin right now, working in
  Sacramento.

  I probably did not say this enough to many of you, and this may be a bit
  late however; I would personally like to thank everybody in Chico that is
  involved with bike riding. Not only did I learn to ride a paceline, but I
  left having come away with many important life lessons that go way beyond
  the scope of pushing my pedals in a silly lycra outfit.

  The next chapter of my life is pretty uncertain and whether that will
  include me sharing a burrito in Palermo with the cycle sport group, sucking
  wheels on a race rides, annoying the workers at nearly every bike shop, or
  living and riding somewhere in some other town, my heart will always be in
  Chico (probably up somewhere near the top of Centerville pumping much too
  fast, but whatever).

  Although this is very brief, I would like for you guys to know how much I
  appreciate you all. You have helped me in more ways than I could ever say
  and giving more than I could ever return.

  Thanks and I’ll see you around,
  Michael Jasinski

The CycleSport team has made a decision to postpone the Butte Meadows ride that was scheduled for Saturday, June 20.
Because it is Father's Day weekend, we are finding many people have commitments..
However, there are several people planning to do the Mile High Century ride on this day.  More info to be posted as the ride gets closer.
Information and registration for the Mile High ride can be found at http://www.milehigh100.com/

Hi Everyone!! Well, with this crazy weather going on, I have NO idea what it's going to be like this weekend at this point in time. However, I wanted to let you know that if it IS raining or if the pavement is quite wet, it is possible that one or both of the Saturday R.A.C.E. Events MAY be postponed - just wanted to give you a head's up, just in case:

Saturday, June 6th - Neal Road DOWNHILL Time Trial - 9:00AM - Registration will open at 8:30am at the top of Neal Road(near the intersection with the Skyway) for this Neal Road DOWNHILL Time Trial. The first rider will go off at 9:01AM and we will go in 1-minute intervals. The course is approximately 8.3 miles in length and drops approximately 1,400 feet. Finish is at the bottom, well before reaching Hwy. 99. One note - RAIN WILL CANCEL THIS EVENT! A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Neal-Road-Downhill-Time-Trial . (Race #1 in the Chico Downhill TT Series) (Race #1 in Rumpstomper Omnium)

Saturday, June 6th - Airport LONG-course Criterium(using the 1-Mile course for this afternoon Criterium) - 6:00PM - We'll be using the NEW Criterium Course for this event - the 1-Mile Chico Airport Long-Course. Registration will open at 5:45pm for this one, with the Start at 6:00pm. The course Starts & Finishes on Marauder Street.......over by the old Koret building on the north end of the Airport. A map of this course can be found here: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Airport-Criterium-Long-Course . This event DOES count towards the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series. Expect lots of Point Primes AND Bear Bucks!!!! This new course has a little elevation gain to it as well - not much, but just enough to feel it. Category "A" will go for 45 Minutes PLUS 3 laps(remember - the course is 1-mile in length). Category "B" will go for 40 Minutes PLUS 3 laps. HELMETS ARE MANDATORY! RAIN OR WET PAVEMENT WILL CANCEL THIS EVENT!! (Part of the 2009 Chico Airport Criterium Series!) (Race #2 in Rumpstomper Omnium)

Sunday, June 7th -  Jonesville Road Race - 8:00AM - Trophy Event  - Registration will open at 7:30am at the bottom of Humboldt Road here in Chico(right next to Stilson Canyon Road), with the Category "A" group starting promptly at 8:00AM - and the Category "B" group starting at 8:02AM. Women's, Juniors and Masters racers may start together, but will be scored separately. Trophies awarded to the 1st Place finishers in each category, assuming we have enough trophies available. This event is bound to be a classic - 35.5 miles and climbs almost 6,200 feet from Chico to the Parking Lot up in Jonesville, California(a few miles past Butte Meadows). Same distance as the Messilla Valley Circuit Race.......but with almost twice as much climbing. I will be in the SAG Vehicle for support, water, breakdowns, whatever might be needed - and will be going back and forth on the course if there is a problem. I will have water at the finish, but may not be able to give anyone a ride back to town.......so come prepared!! A map of this course can be found here:  http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Jonesville-Road-Race-June-2009  (Race #2 in the Chico Road R.A.C.E. Hi Everyone!!! After careful thought, the Neal Road DOWNHILL Time Trial tomorrow morning has a NEW START LOCATION! The new starting location is at the intersection of Indian Springs Road & Neal Road. This is down the road a ways from the Skyway, and will take you away from the Paradise neighborhoods at the top of Neal Road. Parking is limited, so ride your bike to the start if you can! Here is a map of the new course - it is now 6.5 miles in length and drops approximately 1,100 feet - and will allow you to really cruise(but please be careful too!):

Larry Crisman will lead two Mellow-Velo rides this weekend.

Both rides start at One-Mile, 8AM:

Saturday morning- Mellow-Velo in the hills:

Ride up Cohasset Road on Saturday Morning.

Cohasset Store is the goal; maybe a little further?

15-17mph pace on the flats; significant climbing, but climb at your own speed.
No drops.

AND

Sunday Morning- (like the Commodores song: Easy (Like a Sunday Morning))

Mellow-Velo on the flats:

15-17mph pace, distance will be around 20/25 miles, all flats, no hills. There
will be a "pit" stop at Larry's house for all-you-can-eat fresh apricots!

Perfect ride for beginners.

Helmets are mandatory.

Ride Leader is Larry Crisman.

INFORMATION REGARDING THE 2009 CHICO 10-MILE TIME TRIAL SERIES:

1. There will be more than 1 course used for this year's 10-Mile Time Trial Series. The courses will be scattered around the Chico area -  Chico River Road, River Road, Aguas Frias Road, 7-Mile Lane, Lassen Road, Meridian Road and others to be announced as the weeks go on. The idea is to get a feel for the various 10-Mile TT routes around the area.....and just to challenge yourself a bit! Many of these Time Trials will be on Thursday evenings at 6:00PM - however, there may be a few that are thrown in on a different weeknight - or on the weekend. ALL of these Time Trials will be flat to fairly flat. Most of the Thursday Night 10-Mile Time Trials WILL count towards the Series Overall Standings. (There will be a 25-Mile TT Series, as well as a 6-Mile TT Series, announced soon).

2. ALL riders must sign in this year - Like all the events so far this year, you just need to sign in at the start in order to enter the event. And, as usual in these Time Trials, we will be going in 1-minute Intervals. Again, donations are always accepted and appreciated - but all of the events are FREE!

3. Rain and Wind will not cancel the Time Trials, unless specified by the Race Director. However, crudy air conditions(ex. - last year's Humboldt Fire) will cancel them.

4. Helmets are MANDATORY! So, please....please.....wear your helmet! Please!! AND - Yes, Aero Equipment is allowed!! So.....wear an aero helmet!! Or just a regular one!!

5. All are welcome - you don't have to do the Series - just come on out and give one or two of these events a shot! It's amazing what kind of workout you can get in during a 20 to 45 minute 10-Mile Time Trial! And it's just you against the clock!!

6. Points are used to calculate the Overall Standings in this particular Series(makes it easier for the promoter - sorry!). The point breakdown is as follows: 10-8-6-4-2-1-1-1-1, with an additional 2 points being given to each participant who completes each event. So, 10 points goes to the winner, 8 points goes to 2nd place, 6 points goes to 3rd place and so on.........everyone who finishes 6th or beyond gets 1-point for completing the event. The rider with the MOST points at the end of the Series wins the Overall Title - and the Chico 10-MIle Time Trial Series Championship Trophy, plus whatever goodies we can give you. Points will be broken down by Category. Once you enter and finish an event, you are entered in the Series.

7. The following Categories are eligible for a Series Championship Trophy:

Merckxian Category - NO aero equipment!
Category "A" Men
Women's Category
Women's Masters 45+ Category
Category "B" Men
Men's Masters 45+ Category
Men's Masters 55+ Category
Junior Men
Junior Women
(If the numbers allow it, more Categories will be added!) (Can not enter more than 2 Categories per event).

And, as usual, the Series Organizer reserves the right to re-classify you at any time(within reason and with plenty of notice though.....this isn't the UCI!!!)

8. Finally, remember - these Time Trial events are essentially for practice and exercise - we have fun out there and get a great little workout in, and we get to work on some quality cycling. But, overall, they're no big whoop....no World Championship/Olympic medals or million dollar contracts on the line. So, with that in mind, just treat 'em as such - a good training event to try some new things, gain some good fitness.....and maybe even get into a "real" sanctioned race at some point in time. Or not. Just have fun with it!! We'll have trophies and hopefully some prizes for the Series winners - and definitely loads of fun....and pain and suffering. ;)  But remember - it's all in good fun!

Stevo, I'll meet you and group at Euro Cafe at 8:20am, Sat, if that's
cool. Anyone else on this end of town, wanting to share in a cup of
joe pre ride, see you there a tad before 8:00am. We'll dope up and
make Stevo maintain the speed limit!
Ride on,

John
