Two things. First, my new address and phone number (my home email
remains the same):

Bob Weber
4405D Parks Ave.
La Mesa, CA 91941

(619) 825-6390

Second: on October 11, I have to attend a school event and so will not
be able to curl. On October 25, I will be at a conference in Tulsa, OK
for school and so will not be able to curl. I should be able to make
the November date, but that's the only one. Therefore, I will stand
ready to sub on that night, if need be, but I will not I say again NOT
be joining a team for this "season"—it simply wouldn't be fair to my
teammates, whomever they may be. I'm NOT quitting, though! This is too
much fun! I'll look forward to teaming up with someone in January or
February or whenever we get rolling—no, sliding—again.

Hi everyone,

In case you have not yet heard, we have had to cancel this Saturday's
planned curling night as our sliders went missing. However, the ice is
open from 7 PM on, which gives us an opportunity to repaint the houses
and hog lines (they are almost gone).

So, do we have enough people available to volunteer on Saturday night
to get a crew together? Please let me know if you would be able to help
out - it would be great to have our lines back.

And sorry for the late notice - just found out from the rink manager
that this Saturday would be available.

Thanks,
-Elliot

Hi Curlers,

We have had a lot of interest expressed by people interested in
learning how to curl - not sure how many will be able to make it this
Saturday, but it should be a fun event.

We will be instructing new players on the basics of the game, but
there will likely also be room for a pick-up game or two. Any help
with registration/ice setup/instruction is appreciated, but also just
coming out to curl is helpful to show people new to the club how it's
done...

We do have a fridge we can use to cool the rocks, but it will require
some modification before we can use it. So in the meantime, we do
still need to move rocks onto snow earlier in the day on Saturday.
Sounds like Meaghan might be able to help, so if we can get one or
two voluteers, it should be fairly easy. Let me know if you can..

And all things going well, this will be one of the last times we will
have to move rocks...

Good Curling, and see you on Saturday!

Hi curlers,

According to the rink, the following time slots are available over
the next few months (all Saturday evenings):

9/13/08 8:00pm-10:30 pm
9/27/08 8:30 pm-11:00pm
10/11/08 8:00pm-10:30 pm
10/25/08 8:00pm-10:30 pm
11/22/08 8:00pm-10:30 pm

We really need to have an open house/learn to curl clinic soon - I've
received several inquiries recently from people who want to try the
sport. If you would be available on 9/13 to help with a clinic
(setting up ice, instructing, collecting contact info, etc.), please
let me know! As long as some people can make it, I'll start promoting
it tomorrow...

With the remaining dates, I was thinking we could have a mini-season,
sort of like a spread out tournament. If you are interested in
playing, or already have a team ready to go, let me know...

Thanks!

Hi Curlers,

We are currently scheduling ice time for 1 or 2 learn to curl clinics
in September, followed by a fall league - hope to get this set by mid-
next week...

In other news, the ice rink has a few small fridges they are disposing
of because their cabinets are beat up. However, the compressors still
work, so we have the opportunity to use them to power a cold storage
enclosure for the rocks. We just need to build the enclosure, which
will need to be well insulated, rugged, and cheap - no easy task. If
anyone has an idea for how to do this and maybe some time to work on
it, please let me know.

As anyone who has moved the rocks onto snow to cool them before curling
can attest, there is no understating the value of cold storage for the
rocks...

Good Curling,
-Elliot

Hi Curlers,

Hope everyone's summer is going well. We have a pick-up game scheduled
for this coming Sunday, 8/17, at 10AM. If you are planning on
attending, please let me know! Unfortunately, many of our regular
players are out due to conflicts (including myself), so our current
list of attendees (Ron (+1), Owen, & Ryan) won't have enough to play an
actual game.

If it's only 3 or 4 people, you are still welcome to go throw some
stones if you're willing to set up the ice. If you use warm stones,
that's fine, but try to keep the stones moving every few minutes to
minimize the rings in the ice (and throw really hard for the first 30
minutes : ).

If we can get some volunteers, we also have an opportunity to re-paint

maybe we could get a crew out for a mix of painting and curling.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping out or leading up

please help if you can!

Hi Everyone,

The second of our summertime pick-up curling games is fast approaching -
this coming Sunday, 6/22, 10 AM to noon. If you did not receive the e-
vite from Alan, or haven't responded, and you would like to attend,
please either respond to the evite or send me an e-mail so we know how
many are coming (no need to move extra rocks if we're not going to use
them).

Last count we had 8 confirmed - for the summer, we pay the rink per-
person for ice, so a small number is okay as long as we have people to
move rocks and prep ice. If you are up for helping with either task,
please let me know!

Thanks!

Hi Curlers,

The first of four monthly summer curling pick-up games will be held
this coming Saturday, 5/17, at 7PM. For these games, you can come as
an individual or as a full team - we'll assemble teams and pair them
off to play a regular 2-hour game.

If you want to bring friends who are raw beginners, we will try to
have a crash course at the beginning, then throw them into a game.
We can probably only handle a few rookies, so please let me or Alan
know if you are bringing someone.

I won't be able to make it this week (nuts...), but Alan will be
running the night. The next game after this will be June 22 - the
full schedule is on the club website on the league curling page:

http://www.curlsandiego.org/LeagueCurling.htm

Also, if anyone is willing to move rocks this week, please let me
know!

Hi all,

Summer curling has been scheduled! After receiving input from all
the voters regarding "Which summer curling time-slot would you
prefer?", the results are:

- Saturday evenings (like winter league), 6 votes, 46.15%
- Sunday mornings (10am - 12:30), 7 votes, 53.85%

So we've decided to offer 1 curling match a month. 2 will be
Saturday evening draws and 2 will be Sunday draws.

This schedule will allow us to continue to practice and an
opportunity to bring in some non-member players for a chance to play
some games. We hope that with the schedule known in advance, we will
be able to get maximum member turnout over the summer months. Please
visit our website for dates and costs.

http://www.curlsandiego.org/LeagueCurling.htm

You should also begin to see Evites for these dates as they approach;
as well as the May 3rd open-house.

Hi Everyone,

There is a freezer available on craigslist that would be big enough to
hold the curling stones (meaning we wouldn't have to move them onto
snow 6 hours before each curling event). The cost of the freezer is
$1000 - a great price for this type of equipment, but more than the
club has availalbe to spent right now.

If anyone is able to sponsor the purchase of a freezer, or knows of a
person, company, or organization that might, please let me know. A
freezer would be a tremendous asset to the club, as anyone who has
moved rocks onto snow can attest.

Please take out your cameras and snap some cool and fun photos of the
new curlers that will come to the open house. Post them and send them

We still need someone to move stones onto snow tomorrow for the open
house. Please let me know if you can!

On a related note, the rink has approved of us getting a fridge or
freezer to keep the stones cool in storage (making life SO much
easier). Now we just need to find a large fridge or freezer for little
or no money : ) Please keep an eye out for old walk-ins, or large
units we could take the pump from and build our own box.

Thanks!

Hey Guys,

For those of you who haven't heard about it yet, NBC picked up a
reality show called Rockstar Curling. They are planning to
hold "American Idol"-style auditions around the country to select two
teams, 5 men and 5 women. The show will follow the teams through 6
months of full-time training in New York and conclude with the Olympic
Trials. Yes, someone could potentially go from ZERO curling experience
to an Olympic athlete in 6 months' time.

Learn more or apply to audition at:

True, I won't be around for Saturday. Nick and I both have some good info for you about how to teach new curlers. Eventually we need to set up a Level I Instructors clinic in Escondido so you can have a bunch of Certified teachers. Nick and I are both Level II now so we are authorized to teach Level I when the time comes.

I'd love to come and help out on Saturday, but doesn't look good for me. I think Tom will be out of town. I'll get back to you about some basic material for the open house.

Hi Everyone,

We do have a learn to curl clinic coming up this Saturday. We have
the ice from 6:00 to 8:30PM - this is a great chance to get new
players onto the ice! This is also a good time to practice - we will
probably have a couple open sheets of ice, so if you're not helping
with instruction, we can get some pick-up games going.

A couple logistics issues:
- we need volunteers to move the rocks onto snow - is anyone
available this weekend?
- we need to collect money, names, and e-mail addresses starting
around 5:30 - would someone like to run this?
- ice prep - do we have enough members of the regular ice team to get
things ready?
- instructors - all help is appreciated! We're short on licensed
instructors, but we'll do the best we can.

Nick, Tom, if you guys have a suggested lesson plan handy, that would
be great.

Hope to see a lot of members out there this Saturday - it should be
fun! And drag along your friends!

-Elliot
