That was an awesome Open House Saturday night! Thanks to everyone who helped, and everyone who participated. We hope to have another open house in November, so stay tuned.
Share the information about this Yahoo group with anyone who attended or any others who have an interest.
There was a full page article on our Curling club in the North County section of yesterday's San Diego Union Tribune, so try to find and read it. We will try to get all the contact information in the paper for future events.
I look forward to curling with all of you again soon!

Lots of fun for our second time; look forward to the next one. Wanna improve some of those shots!
Any dates yet on the next open house? Have you considered doing a couple nights of "pick up"
curling, where those who have the bare-basics down can practice some real-games?

I would like to thank everyone who came out and helped on Saturday the 14th. Great turnout and everyone had a great time. All of the great help added to the success.
Ice Prep Team - Ice looked great! Instructors - Everyone learned and had fun! Front Table - thanks for staying late to help collect donations and get contact info.
I am feeling pretty optimistic about Curl San Diego. We are well on our way once we can get 3rd and 4th sets of stones here.
Thanks again!

I won't be able to make it again this week, as I have to chaperone our homecoming dance. To whoever will be collecting the money, please make sure checks are made payable to ROBERT J. I would be happy to help, but you'll probably have to remind me a day or two ahead. I haven't been able to make any of the sessions yet (I'm up in Canada as I write this), but I'm back in San Diego tomorrow and am looking forward to meeting some people. If you'd like some instructional help, I could probably assist there, too.

I am happy to help on the 21st. New baby stuff is behind

Subject: [Curl_SanDiego] Re: Open houses and league play
Great to hear from you Ron. Unfotuneately it will be difficult for us to get times for curling that is convienent for all. Prime time is harder to come by and is also more expensive. Once we can go ahead and show that we can get a steady number of curlers we might be able to get an earlier time.
Until we can get things going it will take some sacrifices by everyone. Late night or early morning. Long drives. Volunteering for ice prep (missed the crew last week). It will depend on priorities. It will take some work and sacrifices to get curling going on a steady basis here in san Diego. It will be worth it though.
Please all try and make it out this Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. We do have a good time. Be nice to see both sheets crowded. And, unless you work on Sunday, you can sleep in until football starts like me. :-) --- In Curl_SanDiego@yahoogroups.com, "Ron" <rontech@...> wrote: > > I was all excited about the open houses recently. Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder that we have open houses planned for the next two
Saturday nights, starting at 8:30 at the IceOplex in Escondido.
Everyone is welcome to attend - we will have two sheets going with
beginner instruction on one sheet and a game or practice time for more
experienced curlers on the other sheet.
For more info, check out the website: www.curlsandiego.org.
Please invite friends to come along!
Good curling,

Hi Everyone,
We've been making tremendous progress in bringing curling to San
Diego. With open houses in October and a couple sets of stones on
loan from the WCF arriving in about a month, regular curling is
becoming a reality in sunny SoCal!
As part of our fundraising drive, we have launched an Adopt-a-Rock
program. For a donation of $225, one of our 64 rocks will be
dedicated to you, with your name (or other text of your choosing)
permanently printed onto one side of the handle area. Your tax-
deductible donation also comes with a one year membership to Curl San
Diego, a $50 value.
Starting a curling club is not a cheap endeavor - while we do have
stones on loan, we will need to raise money to pay for them before
those loans expire. For the stones and all of the other equipment
(hacks, pebbler, club brooms, etc.), we will need about $20K. We are
working to raise money from corporate sponsorships, but the adopt-a-
rock program is an important part of our fundraising plan.
If you are interested in adopting a rock (or multiple rocks), please
contact me at ehicks@.... You can also check out the website
at http://www.curlsandiego.org/SponsorARock.htm.
Thank you!

Terry, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the first open
house, and I hope
you can talk your friends into joining you for this one.
Once we start up regular play, we will be playing once a week and
for a couple "seasons" per year, each season being around 10 weeks
long. We will probably have some combination of league play and
pickup so that new curlers can get some instruction and experience
prior to signing up for a team.

I have been a bit of a silent member because I suffered a hip injury and was not sure if I could participate. I am on the mend now and hopeful! The reason I am messaging you all is because my organization, Walden Family Services is holding its annual wine taster to benefit our Independent Futures program - a program designed to help foster youth as they transition out of foster care.
We are seeking auction items for our event which will be a very high profile event at the Birch Aquarium. Press, celebrities and many other VIPs will be in attendance and it would be a great opportunity for exposure for Curl San Diego.
Would you be willing to donate a curl class for the event? We would display your name and information on your organization at our silent auction. Please feel free to contact me at 619-548-2214.
Thanks and hope to be able to join soon!

We have arranged to pick up the 2 sets of
stones from Cathedral City this Friday between 9 and 10 AM – these are
the stones we will be using for the open house on Saturday. Jon and I are
able to go that morning, but neither of us has a vehicle that can transport
1400 lbs of rock. Does anyone have a pickup or SUV that they could loan
us for the trip? – or if you’re willing to make the drive on
Friday, even better – Jon or I would go with you to help with loading and
unloading.
Nice to hear that you guys are going ahead with the club.

friends, although it depends on whether we can talk them into it
or not!
As far as league play goes, do you have any idea how often
the meetings would be?

With the acquisition of four sets of curling stones, we will soon be able to begin regular curling here in San Diego! Once league play begins, all participants will need to be members in Curl San Diego in order to play. Here is how membership will work:
- Memberships will be renewed annually at a cost of $50 per member, and $25 per additional member from the same household.
- Each member will be enrolled as a member of the US Curling Association, which is the governing body for the sport. For those of you who are hockey players, this is like being a member of USA hockey.
- Of the $50, $28 will go to USCA dues. The remaining $22 will be used to help fund equipment for the club. In order to start curling in San Diego, we need about $20,000 worth of equipment (rocks are expensive!) - we have been able to delay some of these costs, but we will continually need to raise money to pay off what we have and save
for future purchases.
- As a member, your cost for participating in open houses will be $5 instead of $15.
If you are coming to the open house this Saturday or one in the near future (we're trying to schedule one for 10/7 as well), we can sign you up for a membership there.

in San Diego, we need about $20,000 worth of equipment (rocks are
expensive!) - we have been able to delay some of these costs, but we
will continually need to raise money to pay off what we have and
save for future purchases.
- As a member, your cost for participating in open houses will be $5
instead of $15.
If you are coming to the open house this Saturday or one in the near
future (we're trying to schedule one for 10/7 as well), we can sign
you up for a membership there.
Good Curling,
-Elliot
Good form for the 23rd of Sept. I will be there. Beauty eh!

Hi Everyone,
We will be holding an open house/learn to curl session on Saturday, September 23rd at the rink in Escondido. We will have the ice starting at 8:30 PM, so we probably won’t get on to the ice until about 9. If you’re an experienced curler and you would be willing to help instruct the new curlers, please let me know. Whether you are experienced or not, I encourage everyone to come down if they can make it – it should be a lot of fun!
For this open house, we will have two sets of stones on loan from CathedralCity. We have also just been approved for 2 sets of stones through the World
Curling Federation’s stone loan program – we don’t yet have a delivery date, but in the very near future we are going to have 4 sets of rocks at our disposal, which will allow us to start regular league play!
Please spread the word about the open house. There is additional information on our website – www.curlsandiego.org – click on the open house link on the left. The picture on that page can be saved and printed out as a flyer if you have a place to advertise the event (perhaps a bulletin board at work).
Hi, everyone!
I would love to be there, but I'm back in Canada for a couple of
weeks. In fact, I plan to go to the opening wine & cheese for my club
back here in Ontario that night! Hey, maybe we should think about
twinning, just for support?
I'm really looking forward to regular league play.

Thanks Ron – that’s
correct. For some reason my message took 10 hours to post to the list –
not sure why that happened. The meeting is tonight (Wednesday, 8/23) at
7:30. Hopefully this e-mail will actually make the rounds before then.

What's happening, and supplies
HI Elliot and all,
Elliot's post went out today, but the email was from
yesterday. I just want to clarify that we are meeting tonight (Wed.) at the
Ice-O-plex in Escondido.
Hope to see you there.
