Best Open House Ever!

I would like to thank everyone who came out and helped on Saturday the
14th. Great turnout and everyone had a great time. All of the great
help added to the success.

Ice Prep Team - Ice looked great!
Instructors - Everyone learned and had fun!
Front Table - thanks for staying late to help collect donations and
get contact info.

I am feeling pretty optimistic about Curl San Diego. We are well on
our way once we can get 3rd and 4th sets of stones here.

I was all excited about the open houses recently. I made it to the
first one back in the spring,.however, I don't think I will be able to
participate in the latest ones because I start work at 5:30 AM and the
open houses don't start until 8:30 PM and I'm getting ready for bed at
that time. I missed the last one and probably will miss this one also.
I will try to make the next one but I don't know yet....Is it going to
be late like this all the time?
How about the league play? I would love to play on a league and Jon
said I have a knack for it so I think I would be real good at it but
would we be playing our games at 9:00 PM? I would love it if we could
get on the ice a little earlier....

Just a reminder that we have open houses planned for the next two
Saturday nights, starting at 8:30 at the IceOplex in Escondido.
Everyone is welcome to attend - we will have two sheets going with
beginner instruction on one sheet and a game or practice time for more
experienced curlers on the other sheet.

Hi Everyone,

We've been making tremendous progress in bringing curling to San
Diego.  With open houses in October and a couple sets of stones on
loan from the WCF arriving in about a month, regular curling is
becoming a reality in sunny SoCal!

As part of our fundraising drive, we have launched an Adopt-a-Rock
program.  For a donation of $225, one of our 64 rocks will be
dedicated to you, with your name (or other text of your choosing)
permanently printed onto one side of the handle area.  Your tax-
deductible donation also comes with a one year membership to Curl San
Diego, a $50 value.

Starting a curling club is not a cheap endeavor - while we do have
stones on loan, we will need to raise money to pay for them before
those loans expire.  For the stones and all of the other equipment
(hacks, pebbler, club brooms, etc.), we will need about $20K.  We are
working to raise money from corporate sponsorships, but the adopt-a-
rock program is an important part of our fundraising plan.

Terry, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the first open house, and I hope
you can talk your friends into joining you for this one.

Once we start up regular play, we will be playing once a week and
for a couple "seasons" per year, each season being around 10 weeks
long.  We will probably have some combination of league play and
pickup so that new curlers can get some instruction and experience
prior to signing up for a team.

We will be holding an open house/learn to curl session on Saturday, September 23^rd at the rink in Escondido.  We will have the ice starting at 8:30 PM, so we probably won’t get on to the ice until about 9.  If you’re an experienced curler and you would be willing to help instruct the new curlers, please let me know.  Whether you are experienced or not, I encourage everyone to come down if they can make it – it should be a lot of fun!

For this open house, we will have two sets of stones on loan from Cathedral City.  We have also just been approved for 2 sets of stones through the World Curling Federation’s stone loan program – we don’t yet have a delivery date, but in the very near future we are going to have 4 sets of rocks at our disposal, which will allow us to start regular league play!

Please spread the word about the open house.  There is additional information on our website – www.curlsandiego.org – click on the open house link on the left.  The picture on that page can be saved and printed out as a flyer if you have a place to advertise the event (perhaps a bulletin board at work).
