Seattle team posts big win at 2009 U.S. Mixed Doubles Championship
(TWO HARBORS, Minn.) - Seattle's Brady and Cristin Clark have won five
U.S. mixed team titles but have yet to conquer the mixed doubles
format. They got off to a fine start Thursday afternoon as they handed
Tom Hemenway and Margie Nelson an 11-2 loss at the 2009 U.S. Mixed
Doubles Championship at the Two Harbors Curling Club.
The Clarks methodically broke open a close game early and kicked it
into high gear in the second half to post the win. "We were only up
one at the halfway point, but I'm always comfortable if I know I have
the hammer to start the second half," Brady Clark said.
Hemenway (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had to make a tough draw in the first end
to avoid the steal and did it again in the third end to keep his team
in the game. "Tom made some crucial draws," Cristin Clark said of her
opponent.
Leading 3-2 after four ends, the Clarks scored three points to open up
the second half and then stole another three when Hemenway couldn't
convert one more big shot. A steal of two in the seventh end
mathematically put Hemenway and Nelson (Duluth, Minn.) out of the game.
"It's always nice to start out with a win," Brady Clark said. "We knew
we needed to keep the pressure on in the second half and force Tom to
make big shots."
