Due to requests made by members of the curling club, I plan to post
information regarding Curling on a weekly basis. Information will
range from rule clarifications, history, and other facts you may or
may not know.
Curling is often assumed to be a Scottish game, but the facts of its
origin are not as clear we think. There has been many debates over
who started Curling. Besides Scotland, many European countries have
ties to the origin of the game. In fact many of the terms used can
be traced back to Dutch or German.
Whoever invented the game, the fact of the matter is, that Scotland
took a hold of the game far more noticeably than any other. The
first clubs in Scotland were started around 1700s and the oldest
Curling Club in North America is the Royal Montreal Curling Club
(founded in 1807). The United States are said to have began forming
clubs about 30 years later. It was game that could be played in
Canada and northern USA during the long cold winters when little
farming could be done and there was plenty of natural ice.
Today the United States has the second largest curling population
(Canada is the largest), thanks to clubs like ours. All of which is
thanks to the Scottish settlers who brought the game to this
continent.
