Dear Brent,
Spring is here and we can finally get outside and not shiver while riding or walking. It's almost Bike Month and we have some great news within this Newsletter - see State & Local News.
There are quite a few events (both walking and riding) coming up. I hope to meet a few of you out there at some of our Benefit Events. You will get a chance to learn about a few of them in our newsletter today and in upcoming newsletters.
Sincerely, Karen Mogridge, Executive Director |
Update on Safe Cycling Bill

Hearing to be held this Fall
Thank you all for your quick action over the last few weeks to contact your Representatives and Senators. There are still some outstanding concerns and questions that need to be addressed; so our bill did not make it out of the Senate last week.
Senator Tom King, Chairman of the Highways and Transportation Committee has offered to work with us in an off-session hearing to address those issues. This year we have made some amazing contacts with your help. I feel certain that we can work to make our roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians alike.
If you haven't do so already, please send a Thank You to Rep. Warner McBride, Rep. Brandon Jones, Rep. Toby Barker, Senator Tom King, Sen. Billy Hewes and Sen. Gray Tollison for their advice and guidance.

Bike Summit
Wow! Everyone in Mississippi should attend this event. 600+ participants from 47 states were in attendance. Locally we had Jim Foster (Biloxi-Gulf Coast Bicycle Club), Jan Morgan (Starkville-Boardtown Bikes), James Moore (Hattiesburg-Moores Bikes & President BWM) and myself (Karen Mogridge - Executive Director-BWM).
We heard from Copenhagen's Bike/Ped Coordinator on how cycling and walking is "just a way of life" in Copenhagen. Workshops ranging from "Stimulus Package - What does it mean for Bicycling", "Better Biking in National Parks", "Urban Trails and Jump Parks", "Complete Streets: The Next Generation", "The Role of Bicycle Dealers in National and Local Adovcacy", "Safe Routes to School Time Three" and much more. Thursday, we hit the Capitol to lobby our State Senators and Representatives and then recharge during the Congressional Reception. Ask any of the other 3 that attended, it was an amazing time to meet other advocates, dealers, manufacturers and just an amazing group of supporters from around the nation.
I personally met the President of Trek and the President of Fuji and advocacy groups from SC, FL, They were both very proud of what Mississippi is doing and can't wait to see where we are next year. Now - who is going next year?

Here at Bike Walk Mississippi, we are working to keep everyone across the state connected. Send in your events, stories (good or bad) and we'll post them to our site. We want the entire state to feel more connected and be able to bring together those working towards the same goals for cycling and walking. It's time for Mississippi to get off the bottom of every BAD list and together we can do something. Send in photos of your community or of your new Car Tag! For more information, please contact Karen Mogridge

Ok - who wants to support the Share the Road campaign? Let's get these tags on your cars! So, we didn't get the Share the Road Bill passed through the Senate this year... Let's show our support on the road with the car tags. To get your car tag, head to your local tag office now or wait until your current tag expires. The tag cost is $31 dollars, above the regular cost of your tag; $24 dollars of that fee goes directly to Bike Walk Mississippi. |
