When my father died, I inherited his various shooting trophies,
mostly from Army matches in the 60's. Many were damaged in one move
or another. The most common problem is pistols that broke off
extended shooting arms. I have some, but not all, of the various
pieces that broke off.

I'd like to clean and fix them as best I can. Any advice on glues,
polishes, replacement parts, repair, etc.?

EVENT: IDPA CLASSIFIER
DATE: Saturday February 10TH
LOCATION: **Cedar Ridge Range**
SIGN UP: **0900HRS - 0945HRS**
INFO: WWW.TEXASTACTICAL.NET

Texas Tactical will be holding the 90 round IDPA
classifier on Saturday February 10th 2007 at the
Cedar Ridge Range between Austin and San Antonio,
Texas. Everyone is welcome to attend!!

Sign up: 0900hrs-0945hrs

IDPA requires all shooters to shoot the
Classifier at least once a year. You are also
required to be classified in each division that
you plan on competing in at the Regional, State
and National level.

We highly recommend that you come out and get
classified. There are many benefits to being
classified. It allows you to compete with people
of your own skill level and classification. It
also allows you to track your progress and
improvement over time. So if you want to get
classified, or maybe you think your skill level
has improved enough to move up to the next
classification level, or you just want some good
trigger time. Come out and shoot with us!!

Hope to see Y'all there!!

Hello all,

Registration for the the California IDPA State Championships (The
California Cup) is now open. This year's match will be held at the
Richmond Rod & Gun Club in Richmond, CA. Even if you are not a
resident of California, you are invited to shoot in this match if
interested.

Match Website:
http://www.CaliforniaCup-IDPA.com

The match will include 15 stages, 200 competitor slots, and nearly
35,000 rounds expended over three days. We will also have Sunday Side
Matches for cash prizes, as well as a large prize table.

The dates are Friday, July 6th through Sunday, July 8th. Safety
Officers and Staff will shoot on Friday, with the main competition
taking place Saturday.

If you want to shoot, you need to be classified as "Marksman" or
better, and you will need to have either shot a Classifier Match or a
Sanctioned Match in the twelve months prior to the match (requirement
not applicable to "Master" classification).

This is a great opportunity to take part in a major shooting
competition, even if you don't consider yourself one of California's
best. We encourage you to consider taking part and enjoying a great
weekend of shooting and fun.

We also have several staff positions still open if you wish to help
out and earn a substantial discount off the match fee.

For more information, see the website or contact the Match Director
(me) at jim@... or (510) 329-1139.

Best,

Jim Griffiths, Match Director

Mark,

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize the models could be
broken down as you had explained. That's great information.

The lack of a firing pin block isn't a big deal, since there's a
manual safety as well as a grip safety - correct?

Rick,
I like the Kimbers. There are 7 of them in the safe right now in various
configurations.

Classic refers to the style. A classic is a standard 1911 design. Other
styles are Elite, CDP, Raptor, RCP, Eclipse, etc.

Custom refers to barrel length. Custom are 5" guns, Pro are 4" guns and
Ultra are 3" guns.

Series II refers to the addition of the grip safety activated firing pin
block.

So a Custom Classic would be a 5" entry level 1911 design autoloader
without a firing pin block.

I bought a used Kimber Classic Stainless at a gun show yesterday.

I had shot a Kimber Custom a few months back, and since then, wanted
one. The price seemed right on this.

Now - I am wondering what the difference is between the Classic and
the Custom or Custom II. I don't see a Classic on the Kimber web site.

Is this the generation prior to the Custom II and Custom I ?

Thanks,

Rick

- From what I recall, the classic is the version without the firing pin
block, like a series 70 colt. Kimbers normally have a firigin pin block
activated by the grip safety (rather than the trigger a la Colt).

Okay girls, boys, guys, gals, lads and lassies...there is another
1911 forum out there. It's new and I am hoping to get some of the
members here to take a look and join if you like.

It covers almost everything in the 1911 venue, revolvers, edged
weapons, gunsmithing, ammunition, reloading, law enforcement,
competitive shooting, tactics & personal defense, training, range
reports, legal & political issues, general gun discussion, holsters,
magazines & accessories and it also contains the Market Place...a
forum for those that might have items related to the shooting sports
for sale.

Yes...this is an invitation to join.

I know there are plenty of you out there that are students of one or
more forum topics...Yep...Syd...You're one of them. I need input
from all of you experienced in your respected forum interests.

I will also be looking for some specific forum moderators in the near
future. Let me know if you are interested.

I have listed the link for those interested below.

Military personnel !!! NRA supports you

Dear Friends,

I have just discovered that the National Rifle Association is giving
away FREE one-year memberships to active duty service members.
Normally the annual membership fee is $35, but for a limited time it
is completely FREE for Active Duty military personnel. Please forward
this to any one you can think of on your email lists who has contact
with any military members.

There's a good article in the January 2007 NRA magazine "America's Freedom"
on what the democratic control of congress will mean for gun owners. Not
good....

I finally voted for a democrat for the first time in 14 years--only because
he got an NRA "A" rating. Hope it doesn't bite me in the ass.

Also interesting were his excuses. Like a textbook sociopath he was
not even embarassed about being caught in a lie, just go on to the next
one "I meant the President", would you believe "It was just a joke",
would you believe "People just misunderstood", would you believe "I

Vietnam veteran and 'war hero' John Forbes Kerry did more damage to the
Democrat cause with his blundering tongue on Monday than the Republicans
could ever hope to thank him for.

Kerry's words on the 30th of October lit a fire storm that will be
filling the airwaves and mail routes of America until election day, and
beyond - angering military personnel, veterans, and their families. (By
official figures, there are 24.5 million U.S. military veterans - all of
whom may well take immediate offense to Kerry poking them in the eye
with his sharp-stick words.)

I think Kerry picked his words carefully when he spoke in front of that
audience of students in California on Monday. Further, I think his
intended message was included in the simple words he chose to use - that
without an education in America, you will be forced by economics into
joining the military, and ending up serving in a war.

There must have been several heart attacks and strokes among his
political handlers when his mouth opened and those words fell out on
that stage - in front of those cameras.

The Kerry camp response to the furor has been to claim Kerry's words
were a botched "joke" about George Bush and not a slam on military duty
and those who serve. How could anyone possibly think otherwise? John
Forbes Kerry is a war hero, after all - and loves his little veteran
buddies.

In years past, such a giant political and career-killing blunder could
be buried my the old-media - but that didn't happen on Monday. The power
of the blogosphere was there to record and transmit his words directly
to the Internet, and to the public, without the old media being able to
control the distribution.

Unless I miss my guess entirely, yesterday's vocal backlash against
Kerry's words was only a weak-sister of what will be seen in these few
days to come before the election.

Only one questions remains:

"How did Karl Rove get John Kerry to say those words the week before the
election?!?!"

I guess, according to Kerry (asshole), despite my MBA...despite my
CPA...despite my job roles over the last few years, my current attempt
to join the Army Reserves and serve my country makes me intellectually
lazy, uneducated and just plain stupid. I, for one, am absolutely
offended by his remarks, not just for myself but for all the men and
women putting their asses on the line to protect mine. According to
his spokesperson, he mis-spoke...bullshit...he's never made a secret
of his feelings of the military from Vietnam on he's held those who
defend his right to have his opinion in contempt. OK, I'm off my
soapbox now.

Col. Jeff Cooper's funeral, as described by Dean Caputo. I received this
in an email from a friend who received it from Dean.

"Greetings from Gunsite, where the weather is beautiful and cooling off
nicely as we head towards Fall.

We are extremely busy this week as we are running four classes and will
be putting on the GAS match this weekend. Following GAS we have an
automatic weapons class on Sunday and Monday and start several more
classes on Monday as well.

I wanted to take some time and report to you on Jeff's funeral, which
took place this Monday. As the family had wanted it to be a private
affair I didn't put the word out in advance, for fear we would be
overwhelmed with people wanting to be here. There was a service in the
classroom followed by a graveside service at Jeff's mausoleum, which you
may recall, was built in 1994 by Larry Larsen. A Marine honor guard
carried the casket and the mausoleum was adorned with a U.S. and a
Marine Corps flag. After a few words the Marines fired three volleys and
then about 90 students and instructors on four different ranges let
loose, on cue, and answered with a huge volume of gunfire. The bugler
then blew taps and after that, the piper, who had started things off
with Amazing Grace, played the Marine Corps Hymn. He then did an about
face and slowly marched away playing the hymn over and over.

The Marine Captain who headed the detail said the barrage of gunfire
made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end and Janelle, and
almost everyone present, burst into tears. Jeff was sent out to the
joyful sound of gunfire and everyone appreciated it. For the students
and staff who were here and participated it was a chance to take part in
something they will always remember.

After the graveside service everyone went back to the classroom for a
reception featuring brownies, iced tea and lemonade, all cooked up by
the Gunsite girls. As things were winding down, at about 5:15PM, a twin
engine turbo prop private plane came diving in and just barely cleared
the roof of the classroom in a banking turn. The pilot then put on the
lowest level air show I have witnessed, complete with climbing up after
the dives and doing rolls. On the final pass, as he buzzed us again, he
couldn't have been more than 20 feet above the parking lot. He pulled up
into a steep dive, did a complete loop and a couple of rolls and flew
away. I was unaware that twin engine private planes like this could do
that sort of thing and I'm sure they aren't rated for aerobatics, but we
witnessed it.

So that was how it went here at Gunsite as we buried Jeff Cooper. I
thought you might want to know."

Utah concealed weapons permits are popular, but a burden
BROCK VERGAKIS - The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's concealed weapons permit is considered by
many firearms aficionados to be the most valuable in the nation
because it is accepted by more than 30 states.

But it's not just Utah residents who are taking advantage of it.

For the first time in the permit's 12-year history, nonresidents are
receiving more permits than residents, creating what could be a
serious legal problem -- Utah has no way of making daily checks to see
if someone's permit should be revoked because of an out-of-state
arrest, said Ed McConkie, chief of the state Bureau of Criminal
Identification.

"When we do our automatic cross-section of those permit holders
arrested we do not have the resources or capabilities to check
non-Utahn applicants or, more specifically, those applicants that are
outside of the Utah criminal case history or Utah state warrant
system," McConkie said.

"That creates serious liability issues the Legislature is going to
have to address."

State officials estimate that about 58 percent of the more than 16,000
concealed weapons permit applications that will be received this year
will come from out-of-state residents, with the fastest-growing
segment coming from Canadians. In past years that figure was closer to
25 percent.

Part of what makes Utah's concealed weapons permit so attractive,
besides its widespread acceptance, is that the permit only needs to be
renewed every five years at a cost of $10. In other states and
counties, it can cost 10 times that and permit renewal can be required
more frequently.

But McConkie said the state only has the resources to check criminal
backgrounds during the permit application and renewal process. He also
said he doubted most other states would be able to check to see if
someone arrested there has a Utah concealed weapons permit to alert
officials here.

"If you are in Missouri, for example, and you have a protection order
put against you we will not know that unless there are some
extenuating circumstances that come to our attention," he said. "We
don't have the resources or the ability to find that out. That's
something the Legislature is going to have to grapple with."

The flood of new applicants is straining the Bureau of Criminal
Identification, which is failing to meet its statutory obligation of
issuing permits within 60 days. Other background checks, such as those
for teachers, are also being delayed.

McConkie said his agency also has barely enough staff to make sure
instructors along the Wasatch Front are following protocol, much less
those certified in 42 other states and Canada.

The initial application requires a gun-safety class, fingerprinting, a
criminal background check and payment of a $59 fee, but applicants
need not ever step foot in Utah.

The bureau's budget is typically about $88,000 a year while its
operating costs are closer to $832,000 a year. McConkie is hoping
lawmakers will dedicate the state's portion of the initial application
fee -- $35 -- to help fund the permit program. That would generate
about $650,000. There was little talk about increasing fees for
out-of-state applicants or limiting their access.

"We will be happy if we get to keep what comes in currently," he said.
"We are confident that we can make this program run efficiently and
meet your statutory imposed deadline to get these applications out
within 60 days if we simply are able to keep the money that comes in
on this user fee program."

A law enforcement and criminal justice committee recommended that
proposal Wednesday. The executive appropriations committee is expected
to review it Friday.

"My assertion is a large number of non-resident applications isn't a
problem in and of itself. It's a good sign there are a lot of people
outside the state who are interested in a Utah permit," said National
Rifle Association lobbyist Brian Judy, who holds a non-resident Utah
concealed weapons permit.

"The Utah system is a good system. Utah permit holders are law-abiding
citizens. True -- you're going to have a very few and far between
where a permit holder will cause a problem, but it's ... an
insignificant number."

Legislators said they aren't sure if the out-of-state permit
application increase is a fluke or a new trend. In the past year,
permit applications have increased 50 percent. In the past two years,
it's increased 100 percent.

Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Lehi, said the state should be commended for
becoming the "gold standard" for concealed weapons permits. He said
Utah's permit is widely accepted because its gun-safety program is
highly respected.
