Jonathan,
As much as we all like guns, I've always thought that defense against mindless
hordes of attackers would be more suited to "combat engineers" rather than
"infantrymen". Take a look at John Ringo's "Gust Front" for an example of what
I mean. The zombies are mindless so they will be much more likely to fall for
any number of booby traps, dead falls, puddles of oil waiting to be ignited once
the zombies have walked into it, etc. Guns would obviously be a large part,
but think about how the defenders could augment their firepower by things like
placing used propane tanks (propane works best as a gas, not a liquid) along the
zombies approach and shooting the tanks rather than directly shooting the
zombies.
