I really enjoy the challenge of skating with descent cyclists. I always ask
them if it is OK if I skate with them because I don't know if it bothers them
knowing there is another person close by. Cyclists generally ride closer to the
edge of the path than a skater which doesn't allow the skater to get the optimal
draft. Oh well, some draft is better than none at all! You may try to change
your form to get directly behind the bike but then you won't be able to get a
full push with your right skate. I think it is best to keep good form and just
get less of a draft.
I also try to plan ahead because a cyclist has much better brakes than a skater.
A cyclist who moderately applies the brakes may make the skater have to strain
to maintain the same amount of braking. I have never had any problems with
running into the back of a cyclist but you definitely have to be alert. I think
if the cyclist knows you are back there, they will try not to do anything
abrupt.

Garth,
I don't know about you but I don't classify as an athlete! I have been
drinking too much beer and not enough Margarettas with Bob on Mondays. Chris
your analysis has me thinking that a design mod may be necessary to optimize
conservation of momentum during the skaters stroke.
Garth - sorry to start talking about a design change before the virgin flight!
lol

I can ride a more or less steady pace on a bike at 22-23 mph. At that same
effort level on skates, I can draft a bike at maybe 18-20 mph. I'm probably
a little less efficient on skates than I am on a bike. In any case, a
skater will be maybe 10% slower than an equivalent level athlete on the
bike.
Add to that the fact that hanging onto a bike is going to mess with your
balance/ form a bit on skates.
At the end of it all, it's gonna take a pretty efficient push for the skater
to make a significant contribution to the bike.
Now if the skater is a much better athlete than the cyclist, it's a
different story.
Chris

I'll let you know what time later in the week.

Saturday looks like 50, warm enough to skate.
I am 90% sure that the skater on the back can help
push the bike faster than the bike could do alone.
