Jazz Move Forward in Win Over Clippers

NBA.com Box Score

http://www.nba.com/games/20011207/UTALAC/boxscore.html

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) —

Donyell Marshall scored 11 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth quarter and Karl Malone also had 29 as the Utah Jazz won consecutive games for the first time this season with a 102-86 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Marshall missed the last two games with a pulled groin muscle but hardly looked out of sync. He made 13-of-20 shots, grabbed seven rebounds and was key in Utah's fourth-quarter dominance.

The Jazz were clinging to a 69-67 lead entering the final period. Malone opened with consecutive baskets to spark a 14-3 run. Marshall scored four points during the burst and capped it with a dunk for an 83-70 advantage with 8:25 left.

Utah led by double digits thereafter, but lost the durable Malone to a hyperextended knee with 6:12 left.

The Clippers made just one basket in the first six minutes of the period and shot just 4-of-18 shots in the final 12 minutes.

John Stockton had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds and rookie Andrei Kirilenko added 11 points and six rebounds for the Jazz, who have won 12 straight meetings with the Clippers.

Elton Brand had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Lamar Odom added 15, nine and seven assists for the Clippers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —

Karl Malone had 29 points and Donyell Marshall scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter as the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 102-86 Friday night.

The Jazz recorded consecutive victories for the first time this season. They haven't taken this long to win back-to-back games since 1979-80, their first season in Utah, when they needed 23 games to do it.

Utah has won its last 12 games against the Clippers.

Malone shot 10-for-16 and made nine of 10 free throws before hyperextending his right knee with 6:12 remaining. The NBA's career leader in free throws made, Malone will break Wilt Chamberlain's league record for attempts from the line with 16 more.

Elton Brand, whose season-high 28 points at Delta Center on Nov. 23 couldn't prevent the Clippers' 25th consecutive loss at Utah, had 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jeff McInnis had 14 points on 7-for-19 shooting -- the fifth time this season he has missed 10 or more shots.

Marshall, who entered with a league-leading .594 field goal percentage, showed no effects from a mild groin strain that sidelined him for two games. He had a dunk and a driving layup during a 14-3 run that opened the fourth quarter and gave the Jazz an 83-70 lead with 8:26 remaining.

The Clippers, who missed their first six shots of the final period, got no closer. McInnis' 12-footer was their only field goal during the first seven minutes of the quarter.

McInnis missed nine of his first 10 shots before making a short running jumper with 19 seconds left in the first half to tie the score at 42.

The Jazz, who overcame a 12-point deficit to beat the Clippers on Nov. 23 at Utah, fell behind by as many as 10 in the second quarter before pulling ahead 37-35 with a 16-4 run. Marshall's 12-footer capped the rally with 3:47 left in the half.

Notes

Clippers guard Eric Piatkowski sat out his third straight game because of a strained right hip flexor. ... The Clippers' longest losing streak against one team is 17 games -- against Portland from Apr. 10, 1986 through Mar. 2, 1989. ... John Stockton, the NBA's career assists leader, is averaging 8.8 assists through the first 19 games. The last time he averaged fewer than 11 assists in a season was 1986-87 (7.9). ... ... Utah's next two victories will give coach Jerry Sloan 700 regular-season wins with the Jazz. ... Utah shot 41 percent, ending a streak of four straight Clippers opponents that have shot less than 40 percent from the field. ... Keith McLaren, whose son is the official scorer at Clippers home games, was the only scoreboard operator the Jazz ever had in Utah until his death on June 19. To honor his dad, Kent McLaren displays an 8X10 photo of the two of them working a Clippers game at Anaheim in 1999.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) —

Karl Malone scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Donyell Marshall netted 29 to lead the Utah Jazz over the Los Angeles Clippers 102-86 at the Staples Center. Utah has won two straight for the first time this season, while the Clippers had their two-game winning streak halted.

The Jazz have won 12 straight against the Clippers and 17 of the last 19 meetings.

John Stockton scored 13 points and dished out seven assists for the Jazz, while Malone had seven assists and Andrei Kirilenko came off the bench to score 11.

The Clippers, who are 4-2 in their last six games, were led by Elton Brand's 25 points and 10 rebounds. Lamar Odom contributed 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Jeff McInnis and Corey Maggette chipped in with 14 apiece.

Scott Padgett tipped in a missed three pointer by Kirilenko, giving Utah a 69-67 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes of play.

The Jazz opened the fourth quarter with a 12-3 run, taking an 81-70 lead with 8:44 to go. Marshall jammed with one hand and Malone made a layup and canned a six-foot jumper from inside the lane to highlight the spurt.

With 2:00 to play, Utah had a 98-83 advantage and held on for the victory.

Brand scored eight points and Corey Maggette dropped in seven to give the Clippers a 23-20 advantage after one quarter. Malone kept the Jazz in the game with eight points.

The Clippers opened the second stanza with an 8-1 burst to go ahead 33-21. Brand capped the spurt with four straight points from inside the paint.

Utah countered with a 12-0 run to tie the game at 33-33. Stockton drove the lane and put in a one-handed runner, while Marshall and Malone each drained jumpers to cap the run.

The teams traded baskets the rest of the half, as the game was tied 42-42 heading into the locker room. Brand led the Clippers with 13 points, while Odom dropped in 10 points and six boards. Malone went 6-for-6 from the foul line and had 12 points for the Jazz.

The Clippers went on a 15-6 run to open the second half. Brand capped the surge by taking a pass from Odom and driving the baseline for a one-handed dunk. Maggette hit two jumpers during the spurt.

The Jazz came right back, scoring nine of the next 13 to knot the game at 61-61. Malone scored eight in a row to highlight the surge. He hit two free throws, nailed a short jumper, made a layup a dunked with one hand over Brand.

Game Notes

DeShawn Stevenson finished with a game-high nine assists for Utah...Marshall scored 19 points in the second half...Malone finished 9-of-10 from the foul line...Utah is 3-5 on the road this season...The Jazz lead the all-time series 71-50...Brand recorded his 14th double-double of the season...The Clippers fell to 9-5 at home.

LOS ANGELES (Ticker)

Forwards Elton Brand and Lamar Odom made sure the Miami Heat kept going backward.

Brand collected 23 points and 17 rebounds and Odom had three big baskets down the stretch as the Los Angeles Clippers dealt the Heat their 12th straight loss, 87-83.

Brand battled foul trouble as he began a fourth-quarter rally that saw Los Angeles erase a six-point deficit. Odom pulled the Clippers even, then put them ahead for good.

After the Heat opened their largest lead at 73-67 with 10:22 to play, Brand scored three baskets over the next five minutes, with the last one making it 78-76 with 5:39 remaining.

Odom took over from there. His banker just over a minute later tied the game and, after Brian Grant made a jumper to give the Heat an 80-78 lead, Odom took charge.

Odom had a thunderous follow dunk on a fast break that tied it, 80-80, with 2:42 left. On the next possession, Odom drove hard to the basket, drew a foul from LaPhonso Ellis and flipped in a layup. The three-point play gave the Clippers the lead for good with 2:07 to go.

Miami's Rod Strickland made two free throws, but Odom shoveled a pass to a cutting Quentin Richardson for a dunk and an 85-82 lead with 52 seconds to play.

Alonzo Mourning made 1-of-2 from the line and Miami had a chance to tie on its next possession. But recent signee Jimmy Jackson missed a runner in the lane and Brand snared the rebound. His two free throws with five seconds left sealed it.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —

Elton Brand had 23 points and 17 rebounds and Quentin Richardson added 19 points as the Los Angeles Clippers dealt the Miami Heat their 12th straight loss with an 87-83 victory Tuesday night.

This is the third-longest losing streak ever for the Heat, who entered the league in 1988-89. The Heat lost their first 17 games in their inaugural season before ending the drought against the Clippers in Los Angeles. The following season, Miami dropped 13 straight.

Alonzo Mourning scored 21 points for the Heat, one of three teams without a road victory (0-6). Eddie Jones, Miami's leading scorer, did not play after bruising his right knee toward the end of Monday's practice.

Jim Jackson made his season debut after signing with Miami as a free agent on Sunday, playing 41 minutes and scoring all 14 of his points in the first three quarters. He shot 6-for-14 and missed a seven-foot jumper that would have tied the score with six seconds left.

After trailing throughout the fourth quarter, the Clippers tied it for the second time at 80-all when Lamar Odom slammed home a missed layup by Jeff Mcinnis with 2:43 to play.

The Clippers took the lead for good with 2:07 left, as McInnis fed Odom for a three-point play that gave Los Angeles an 83-80 lead. LaPhonso Ellis fouled out on the play.

Rod Strickland pulled Miami even with a pair of free throws, but Brand found Richardson cutting down the lane for a slam dunk that gave the Clippers an 85-82 edge with 53 seconds left.

Mourning made one of two free throws after Clippers center Michael Olowokandi fouled out for the first time this season with 41 seconds on the clock. Odom missed a 20-footer at the other end, but Jackson missed his chance to tie the score and Brand's two free throws sealed it with five seconds remaining.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) —

Elton Brand scored 23 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 17 rebounds, as the Los Angeles Clippers held on for an 87-83 victory over the Miami Heat. Quentin Richardson added 19 points for the Clippers, who have won four of their last five.

Lamar Odom scored 13 points for LA, which outscored Miami 20-13 in the final frame to hand the Heat their 12th straight loss.

The Heat, who shot just 36 percent from the floor, were led by Alonzo Mourning's 21 points, while Jim Jackson chipped in 14 in his Miami debut.

Miami opened a four-game road trip by playing without guard Eddie Jones, who is sidelined due to a right knee injury. However, Brian Grant returned for the Heat and ended with eight points and nine boards. Grant had been on the IL with a bone bruise.

Miami grabbed a 78-74 lead with 6:28 left in the game on an Anthony Carter basket, but the Clippers responded with a 9-2 surge, culminated by an Odom three-point play, to take a 83-80 edge with 2:07 left. Odom scored the last seven points in the span for LA.

After two free throws from Rod Strickland, Richardson slammed one home to push the LA lead to 85-82 with 52 seconds left. Mourning was then sent to the line for Miami, but hit just 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead to two points with 40 seconds left.

Miami managed to get the ball back, but Jackson missed on a runner in the lane in the final seconds. Brand then sank two free throws to ice the win.

Trailing by four late in the first quarter, the Clippers ran off 10 straight points, with Michael Olowokandi scoring four, to take a 24-18 advantage with 1:39 left. But the Heat ended the first with a 5-1 spurt to trail 25-23 at the end of one.

In a tightly-played second quarter, the Heat outscored LA 23-21 to even the contest at 46-46 at the break. Brand had 13 points and seven rebounds for LA at the half, while Mourning had 11 points for the Heat.

The Clippers scored five unanswered points early in the third quarter to take a 55-54 lead with 6:38. LA led by three points late in the frame before the Heat ended the third by scoring six straight, capped by a Sam Mack three- pointer at the buzzer, to grab a 70-67 edge heading into the final quarter.

Game Notes

Olowokandi ended with 11 points, nine boards and six blocks...Eric Piatkowski missed the game for LA with a strained right hip flexor...The Heat committed just eight turnovers, compared to 17 for LA...The Clippers sank only 3-of-14 three-pointers...Miami was just 21-of-33 from the free throw line...Chris Gatling had 13 points for Miami.

Richardson Leads Clips Over Pacers

NBA.com Box Score

http://www.nba.com/games/20011202/MILSEA/boxscore.html

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) --

Quentin Richardson fell short of the NBA record for consecutive 3-pointers. That's just about the only thing that did not go right for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Richardson extended his streak to 10 straight 3-pointers and scored 21 points off the bench to lead six players in double figures as the Clippers rolled to their most lopsided victory in nearly four years, 103-72 over the Indiana Pacers.

Jeff McInnis added 17 points and Darius Miles had 14 while Elton Brand and Michael Olowokandi recorded double-doubles for Los Angeles, which extended its home winning streak to three games.

After scoring 26 points in Friday's 96-93 loss to Denver, Richardson came off the bench with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter. He drilled three 3-pointers in the second half to extend his streak to 10 but missed his next attempt from the arc and fell three short of tying the NBA record.

Richardson's 27-footer with 4:11 to go in the second period made it 48-34. Olowokandi followed with a layup to give the Clippers their biggest lead of the first half. They took a 53-42 advantage into the locker room, then started the third quarter with a 13-0 run to take control.

Reggie Miller and Austin Croshere each scored 12 points for the Pacers, who shot just 33 percent (31-of-93) in the finale of a 2-3 road trip.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —

Michael Olowokandi recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds and reserve Quentin Richardson had 19 points as the Los Angeles Clippers built a 30-point lead through three quarters and beat the Indiana Pacers 103-72 Sunday night.

It was Indiana's most lopsided loss since Isiah Thomas became their coach at the start of last season, and their most onesided defeat ever against the Clippers.

Reggie Miller and Austin Croshere each had a team-high 12 points for the Pacers, who lost for the eighth time in 12 games and just the second time in their last 16 meetings with the Clippers.

The Clippers' only other victory over Indiana during that span was a 13-point win two seasons ago when Miller, who has made more career 3-pointers than any player in NBA history, went 0-for-6 from behind the arc in his first-ever visit to Staples Center. This time, he was 4-for-10 in 23 minutes.

The Pacers' collective frustration got to Al Harrington, who picked up two technical fouls from Bob Delaney and was ejected with 33 seconds left in the third quarter with Indiana trailing 79-52. Delaney was the same official who ejected the Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal in the first quarter Friday night at Seattle.

The Clippers began the third quarter with a 22-6 run that extended their nine-point halftime lead to 75-48 with 3:42 left in the quarter. Richardson capped the rally with a 3-pointer, one of eight by the Clippers.

Richardson led the Clippers to a 53-42 halftime lead with 13 points. Darius Miles added 10 off the bench and also blocked shots by Croshere and Jonathan Bender on the same possession during a 10-4 spurt that opened the second quarter and extended the Clippers' lead to 33-23.

Richardson set a Clippers franchise record for consecutive 3-pointers made, as he connected on his first two and extended his streak to 10 in a row. He tied Rodney Rogers' previous mark of nine straight with a 28-footer from the left corner, then broke it on a 26-footer from the top of the key with 8:55 left in the second quarter.

Richardson missed his next attempt from behind the arc, a hurried 26-footer.

The Pacers missed 10 of their first 11 shots and trailed 23-19 after one quarter. It was the third time in four games, and fourth time this season, that the Clippers held an opponent under 20 points in the opening period. They have won all four of those games.

Notes:

Clippers guard Eric Piatkowski sat out for the first time this season because of a strained right hip flexor, which temporarily kept him from joining Loy Vaught and Randy Smith as the only players in franchise history to play in 500 games. ... Pacers rookie Primoz Brezec didn't play because of a sore right ankle. ... The Pacers concluded their five-game Western trip 2-3. ... The Clippers began a string of eight consecutive games at Staples Center, including a ``road'' game against the Lakers. ... Jermaine O'Neal, who missed nine of 12 free throws in Saturday's victory at Utah, did not go to the foul line in 31 minutes. ... Jalen Rose, who entered with a team-high 21-point scoring average, has reached the 20-point mark only once in his last nine games. He had eight points in 23 minutes. ... Four of the Clippers' eight victories have come against Eastern Conference teams. Last season, 13 of their 31 wins came against the East.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) -

Quentin Richardson paced six double-figure scorers with 21 points as the Los Angeles Clippers rolled over the Indiana Pacers, 103-72, at the Staples Center. Jeff McInnis added 17 points and Darius Miles chipped in 14 points for the Clippers, who have won three of their last four games.

Elton Brand had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win, while Michael Olowokandi chipped in 12 points and 11 boards.

Richardson, who finished 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, set a Clippers' franchise record with 10 consecutive three-pointers made. He is 13-of-17 from long range in his last three games.

Reggie Miller and Austin Croshere each had 12 points to lead Indiana, which had a two-game winning streak snapped. Al Harrington added 10 points, but was ejected in the third quarter for arguing a call. The loss was the worst ever for Indiana against the Clippers.

The Clippers took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Indiana 31-12 in the period. LA already was ahead 53-42 when it opened the second half with 13 straight points. McInnis had five points in the burst, while Olowokandi added four.

After the Pacers scored six straight to make the score 66-48, the Clippers came right back with a 9-0 run to go ahead 75-48 with 3:42 left in the third.

LA led 84-54 after three quarters and started the final 12 minutes with an 10-2 run to put the game out of reach. Corey Maggette scored seven of his 13 points in the spurt. The spurt gave the Clippers their biggest lead of the game at 94-56 with 8:52 remaining.

LA led 23-20 after the first quarter and carried a 53-42 lead into the locker room. Richardson paced the Clippers with 13 points at the break, while Miller led Indiana with 12.

Game Notes

Rodney Rogers held the previous Clippers' mark for consecutive three pointers made with nine...Jermaine O'Neal led the Pacers with 12 rebounds...Lamar Odom had 11 assists in the win, but scored just two points on 1-of-8 shooting...The Clippers finished 8-of-18 from the three-point line...Richardson also added seven boards...Indiana is still 14-2 in its last 16 meetings with LA.

Odom & Co. ready to start over
December 1, 2001

Joe Stevens
Long Beach Press-Telegram

Off-court drama has surrounded Lamar Odom all season long. But finally, the drama has been put on hold.

Odom returned to the starting lineup, and somehow, with 16 games in the books, the season feels like it's just starting now.

The Clippers never have had a chance to see how their starting lineup performs at full strength. Odom only played in three games, before being suspended eight games for violating the league's anti-drug policy. He was off to a slow start, and so were the Clippers.

Odom's shooting still hasn't been too effective. He seemingly solved his shooting issues by taking fewer shots and creating more plays for teammates. Although he had been in a slump, Odom is a special player who can dominate a game without scoring. That side of him finally has been showing.

A phrase coach Alvin Gentry has been spouting to his team is "play right." That means to stay under control, don't make an overly athletic play if unnecessary and be smart. Odom has heeded that advice, but still needs to play more right.

Odom had an interesting box-score line against Minnesota on Wednesday when he had six points, nine rebounds and nine assists. It probably was his best game this season, but he had an ugly six turnovers. Still, the game proved that he doesn't have to score to be effective.

The team's scoring balance will be a curious thing to watch. With Elton Brand's addition and the emergence of Quentin Richardson, there might be no Clipper who significantly scores more this season other than Richardson.

If that happens, the Clippers will have a well-balanced team. Odom will be like a second point guard, or "point forward." Michael Olowokandi will provide more of a defensive presence and an offensive rebounder. Jeff McInnis and Eric Piatkowski will have the same roles as last season, being counted on to make open jump shots and not be defensive liabilities.

Beyond the starting lineup, Darius Miles and Corey Maggette could emerge. Gentry has been stern with not fiddling with his starting lineup. But guys like Miles and Maggette could improve to the point where they need to start.

If Miles, Maggette or Richardson repeatedly are on the court at the end of the game, why not start one of them?

POSITIONAL ANALYSIS

Point guard: McInnis has been serviceable and has mastered the running jump shot. However, he hasn't been creating many shots for his teammates. He plays smart, yet might benefit by taking more risks. Grade: C.

Shooting guard: Piatkowski finally had a big night, scoring 24 points against Minnesota. Richardson only played 19 minutes that night, but still scored 14 points. Piatkowski and Richardson have been fine offensive forces, but their defense could use improvement. Grade: B.

Small forward: With Odom starting again, the Clippers should be improved. He is looking better, but still isn't in midseason form. He still needs to make wiser decisions with the basketball and cut down on his turnovers. Grade: C+.

Power forward: Steady as ever, Elton Brand is vying with Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki for the league lead in double doubles. What makes Brand so good is that even when he has bad games, they're good games. He remains a hard worker and good character guy, too. Grade: A-.

Center: All of Olowokandi's statistics have decreased this season, yet the Clippers' feeling is that he's having his best season. Olowokandi has accepted a defensive role and has been helping the team that way. With Brand inside, he is no longer needed for a lot of scoring. Grade: B-.

Bench: All season, the Clippers' bench has been in the top three in scoring. The second unit, led by Richardson and Miles, frequently gives them emotional and scoring boosts. With Maggette coming off the bench again, the reserves have quite a lot of depth. Grade: B.

Coaching: The salient question is this: Is the coaching staff winning games for the team? The answer isn't really "yes." The Clippers have been competitive in all of their losses, but they haven't stolen any of those games. Grade: C.

INJURY REPORT

PG Keyon Dooling: High left ankle sprain (Nov. 14)
Analysis: The severe sprain is expected to keep Dooling out about five more weeks. He is on crutches and can't put weight on his foot. Earl Boykins has gotten some of his minutes, and Odom has played a few minutes at point guard.

IN THE ZONE

The Clippers hardly ever play a defensive zone. In fact, chances are that they go through an entire game without using a zone. With so many athletic individuals, the zone isn't the best idea for them.

When they have run the zone, they've just thrown it out to give their opponents another look. It hasn't been used enough to be termed a success or not a success.

Gentry believes that with the defensive three seconds rule, an NBA zone leaves too much open in the middle. He's right. As the season progresses, expect most teams to curtail their use of the zone and use it like Gentry. Actually, most teams use it that way already.

Against Minnesota, the Clippers played their first game in which they faced a good zone. They also faced it against Memphis and Chicago, but Minnesota's zone was, by far, the strongest. The Timberwolves took enough liberties within the confines of the zone that it wasn't a hindrance. It was a zone in setup, but then they maneuvered into individual defense when the Clippers penetrated.

The Clippers' success against the zone depends on how well they move the ball and how Piatkowski and Richardson shoot. Against Minnesota, they moved the ball well and both shooting guards were on.

DENVER (Ticker) --

Lamar Odom missed a game-tying 3-pointer with eight seconds left and Raef LaFrentz followed with a pair of free throws as the Denver Nuggets held on for a 96-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Denver took the lead for good at 91-90 on Raef LaFrentz's follow shot of Nick Van Exel's shot with 58 seconds left.

Eric Piatkowski was charged with an offensive foul on Van Exel with 17.3 seconds remaining, and the point guard hit a pair of free throws to give the Nuggets a three-point advantage.

The Nuggets (7-9) snapped a four-game losing streak and won their seventh straight at home over the Clippers. They were paced by LaFrentz's 26 points and 14 rebounds. Van Exel contributed 18 points.

The Clippers (7-9) had a two-game winning streak broken. They have lost four of their past six games.

Los Angeles was led by Quentin Richardson's 26 points, 16 of which were scored in the fourth quarter. Elton Brand added 17 points but was held scoreless in the fourth, which began with the game tied at 66-66.

The Clippers shot just 4-of-23 in the first quarter and were behind 24-14 after 12 minutes. But they made 13-of-20 shots in the second quarter to take a 45-44 lead at the break.

DENVER (AP) —

Raef LaFrentz made two free throws in the last six seconds and had 26 points and 15 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets ended a four-game losing streak with a 96-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

LaFrentz was 4-for-5 shooting and 5-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter, and Nick Van Exel added 18 points for the Nuggets, who beat the Clippers for the seventh straight time in Denver.

Quentin Richardson had 16 of his 26 points in the final period for Los Angeles, which had its two-game winning streak stopped. Elton Brand had 17 points and 12 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season.

After LaFrentz's tip of a miss, Van Exel sank two free throws with 17 seconds left to put Denver ahead 94-91. Lamar Odom missed a 3-pointer with 17.5 seconds left and LaFrentz sealed the win with two free throws.

The Clippers opened the fourth with an 8-0 run, with six of the points coming from Richardson to lead 74-66. LaFrentz and Nick Van Exel keyed a 12-2 run with a 3-pointer each to give Denver a 78-76 lead 78-76 with 7:24 left. After LaFrentz put Denver up 90-88 with two free throws, Richardson hit a 3-pointer with 58 seconds left giving Los Angeles a 91-90 lead.

Avery Johnson's layup and free throw and offset a 3-pointer by Richardson to keep the Nuggets ahead 83-82. Johnson's layup with 4:09 left.

Johnson had five points on two layups and a free throw over the next three minutes, but Richardson matched it with a 3-pointer and jumper to make it 85-84.

Two short jumpers by Brand gave the Clippers their biggest lead, 58-50, but Van Exel who had missed his first eight shots, hit two straight 3-pointers to pull the Nuggets ahead 61-60 with 3:08 left in the third. Sean Rooks' fadeaway jumper from 10 feet in the last 34 seconds of the third quarter tied it 66-66for Los Angeles, which led 45-44 at halftime.

Notes

Eric Piatkowski was the only Clipper on the team when it last won in Denver on March 8, 1998. ... Brand and Jeff McInnis had the only two field goals in the first eight minutes as Los Angeles started out 2-for-14 from the field. ... Shawnelle Scott drew the start at center for Denver to have a bigger body on Michael Olowokandi. He finished with four points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. ... The Nuggets have hit at least one 3-pointer in 209 straight games.... Los Angeles hasn't won in Denver since March 8, 1998.

DENVER (Sports Network) -

Raef LaFrentz collected 26 points and 15 rebounds, and made a big bucket late to help the Denver Nuggets edge the Los Angeles Clippers, 96-93. Nick Van Exel added 18 points on just 4-of-19 shooting for the Nuggets, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Quentin Richardson poured in 26 points and grabbed seven boards for the Clippers, who had a two-game winning streak halted. Elton Brand totaled 17 points and 12 boards for LA.

After LaFrentz gave Denver a two-point lead with two free throws, Richardson drained a three-pointer to put LA up one, 91-90, with 58 seconds to play. But LaFrentz then came through again for Denver, tipping a basket home to give the Nuggets a 92-91 edge with 39 seconds left.

The Nuggets then made four straight free throws to ice the contest.

Denver pulled out the win despite shooting just 39 percent from the floor and hitting only 7-of-24 three-pointers.

The Clippers began the fourth by scoring the first eight points, with Richardson scoring six, to build a 74-66 advantage. Denver countered with a 12-2 burst, with Van Exel and LaFrentz each hitting treys, to regain the lead at 78-76 with 7:24 left.

The Nuggets stormed out of the gate to a 14-4 lead, capped by a James Posey layup, and held a 24-14 advantage at the end of one.

Richardson hit back-to-back three-pointers early in the second to pull the Clippers within 28-22. After Denver pushed its lead back to 10, LA went on an 11-4 run, with Brand scoring seven, to shrink the lead to 36-33 with 4:42 left in the half.

Richardson then tipped in a basket with 15 seconds left in the second to give the Clippers a 45-44 edge at the break.

Brand had 12 points at the half for Los Angeles, which outscored Denver 31-20 in the second frame. LaFrentz paced Denver with eight points and 10 rebounds.

With the score tied early in the third, LA used an 8-0 run to grab a 58-50 advantage. But the Nuggets countered with an 11-2 burst, capped by back-to- back three-pointers from Van Exel, to regain the lead at 61-60 with 3:12 to go. But the end of three, the teams were knotted at 66-66.

Game Notes

Avery Johnson scored 13 points dished out seven assists for Denver, and Posey ended with 12 points...Darius Miles ended with 14 points off the LA bench...Denver has won seven straight against the Clippers...Richardson sank all four of his three-point attempts.

Clippers Sail Past the Timberwolves

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- Eric Piatkowski scored 24 points and Elton Brand had 16 with 13 rebounds as the Clippers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-75.  Wally Szczerbiak had 20 points and Kevin Garnett got 14 points and 15 rebounds for Minnesota, which has lost consecutive games for the first time this season.
LOS ANGELES (Ticker) --

Eric Piatkowski scored 11 of his season-high 24 points in the third quarter and Elton Brand had 16 and 13 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers posted a 94-75 victory over the suddenly struggling Minnesota Timberwolves.

Piatkowski had scored at least 11 points in just six games this season, but matched that total in the third quarter, making 4-of-8 shots, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

"I felt real good coming into the game," said Piatkowski, who finished making 9-of-14 shots and 5-of-6 3-pointers. "My team did a real good job of getting me the ball when I had open looks."

The Clippers trailed, 41-40, with 10:39 left in the third quarter before seizing control with a 27-8 run. Piatkowski nailed a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points, and Brand added eight during the burst.

Michael Olowokandi capped the run with a free throw to give Los Angeles a 67-49 lead, and the Timberwolves never got within single digits thereafter.

Quentin Richardson scored 14 points off the bench and Jeff McInnis added 10 for the Clippers, who made a season-high 12 3-pointers.

"You always know how you want to play," Richardson said. "But we didn't think we would play this good and beat the Timberwolves by 19 points."

"It was our best win by far this year against a quality team," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "The only way to attack this team is to be really aggressive."

Wally Szczerbiak scored 20 points and Kevin Garnett posted 14 points and 15 rebounds for Minnesota, which recorded a season low in points and has lost consecutive games for the first time in 2001-02.

"We're not the Minnesota T-Cubs," Garnett said. "Teams are getting up for us. We're one of the top teams in the conference and the Clippers came at us."

Piatkowski scored 10 points in the opening 12 minutes, including a 3-pointer that sparked a 7-0 quarter ending run to give Los Angeles a 20-16 lead.

The Clippers had a 31-26 advantage with 5:13 left in the second, but Minnesota scored 11 of the next 14 points. Chauncey Billups sparked the run with a 3-pointer and Anthony Peeler's layup with 1:25 remaining gave the Wolves a 37-34 lead.

Piatkowski tied it with another 3-pointer and Brand made a 14-foot jumper with time winding down to give the Clippers a 39-37 halftime edge.

The Timberwolves scored the first two baskets of the third, but Los Angeles outscored them, 54-34, the rest of the way and had its largest lead when time expired.

"We were really aggressive in the second half," Gentry said. "We didn't allow them to get set in their zone and it worked for us. When you play against a zone you have to make shots. Piatkowski and Quentin made shots tonight."

Minnesota shot just 36 percent (33-of-91) and made only 4-of-20 3-pointers. The Timberwolves went to the line just six times, while the Clippers made 12-of-16 free throws.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —

Eric Piatkowski scored all 24 of his points in the first three quarters and Elton Brand added 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-75 Wednesday night.

The Clippers beat the Midwest Division-leading Timberwolves for only the fifth time in their last 20 meetings despite committing a season-worst 25 turnovers. Los Angeles offset its mistakes by making a season-high 12 3-pointers, including five by Piatkowski.

Lamar Odom, starting for the first time in four games since serving an eight-game drug suspension, finished with six points on 2-for-3 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds in 31 minutes.

Wally Szczerbiak scored 20 points and Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who entered the game with the league's third-best record at 10-3.

The Clippers pulled away with a 22-4 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 62-45 lead with 4:38 left in the third quarter. Piatkowski made a pair of 3s late in the rally and Odom capped it with a fast-break layup.

Szczerbiak scored seven consecutive points to trim Minnesota's 14-point deficit to 80-70 with 6:11 to play. But Quentin Richardson, who scored all 14 of his points in the fourth quarter, responded with three consecutive 3-pointers in the final 2:18 to make the Clippers' final margin their biggest of the game.

Brand, whose streak of 20-point games ended at 10, scored only six points in the first half — including a fadeaway 14-foot buzzer-beater that gave Los Angeles a 39-37 edge at intermission.

The Clippers, who committed 13 turnovers in the half to Minnesota's five, did not send the Timberwolves to the foul line until Anthony Peeler sank two with 7:03 left in the second quarter.

Los Angeles took only 10 shots in the first 7 1/2 minutes and committed seven turnovers in the first quarter, but still led 20-16. Garnett missed six of his first seven shots, while Piatkowski went 4-for-5 with a pair of 3-pointers and Brand blocked three shots by Gary Trent in a one-minute span.

Notes: Piatkowski became the 11th player in franchise history to play at least 10,000 minutes for the Clippers, and the seventh to do it exclusively in Los Angeles. ... The Timberwolves are back at Staples Center on Saturday night, when they try to end a string of 14 straight road losses to the Lakers. Minnesota is one of five teams playing the Clippers and Lakers in back-to-back games at Staples this season, and the only club that will do it twice. ... All of Minnesota's first 14 opponents have shot below 50 percent from the field. The Clippers (46.1) and the Knicks are the only teams that have shot above 45 percent against them.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) -

Eric Piatkowski scored 24 points, hitting 5-of-6 three-pointers, as the Los Angeles Clippers blew out the Minnesota Timberwolves 94-75 at Staples Center. Elton Brand collected 16 points and 13 rebounds for LA, which has won two straight.

Quentin Richardson ended with 14 points, sinking four three-pointers in the fourth quarter for the Clippers, who drained 12-of-18 treys in the game.

Wally Szczerbiak scored 20 points for the Wolves, who have dropped three of their last four to drop out of the top spot in the Midwest Division. The Spurs grabbed first place with a win over Golden State Wednesday.

Kevin Garnett finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds and six assists for Minnesota, which shot just 36 percent and took just five free throws, hitting five.

After the Wolves scored on back-to-back buckets to open the second half, the Clippers went on a dominating 23-4 run, with Piatkowski scoring 10 in the span, to take control of the game. With 4:38 left in the third, the Clippers had a 62-45 advantage, and maintained a 67-54 edge at the end of three.

Los Angeles started the fourth quarter with a 7-2 burst to open a 74-59 cushion with 9:44 remaining in the contest. Minnesota cut the lead to 10 at 80-70 with 6:11 left after seven straight points from Szczerbiak. However, the Clippers countered by scoring five unanswered to build an 85-70 advantage, putting the game away.

For icing on the cake, Richardson ended the game by draining three consecutive three-pointers.

The Clippers led 11-8 in the first quarter before the T'wolves went on an 8-2 spurt, capped by a Garnett dunk, to take a 16-13 lead. However, LA scored the last seven points of the frame, with Piatkowski scoring five, to hold a 20-16 edge heading into the second frame.

Trailing by five, the Wolves ran off seven straight points, sparked by a Chauncey Billups trey, to regain the lead at 33-31 with 3:38 left in the half. But the Clippers once again responded, ending the second with a 10-4 surge that gave a them a slim 39-37 lead at the break.

Piatkowski had 13 points at the break for Clippers, while Szczerbiak scored eight first-half points to pace the Wolves, who hit just 16-of-50 shots in the opening 24 minutes.

Game Notes

Minnesota hit just 4-of-20 three-pointers...Michael Olowokandi grabbed 12 rebounds for the Clippers...Los Angeles committed 25 turnovers, compared to 14 for the Wolves...Lamar Odom ended with nine rebounds and nine assists for LA.

Hi, all!

I regret to say that you have seen the last official editions
of the Clippers Press Digest and Angels Press Digest for a while.

As some of you may have already known, I've been unemployed since 7 September. The job search has been long and tedious and mostly unfruitful. I have sent out many a resume and have gotten very few calls back and have only been on two interviews in that entire time.

The CPD and APD were (and will be again) joys to produce. They kept me grounded at times when I wanted to crawl into a fetal position and not move. They weren't a financial drain on me since they cost me nothing to produce but time. They are a labor of love and one I'm thankful has been accepted. I'll be updating the CPD Photo Gallery and I'll squeeze in as many future editions as the Creator and Earthlink will allow me. However, you shouldn't expect your news, at least from me, with the regularity to which you have become accustomed. As soon as I get re-settled in my own place, the CPD and APD will resume on a regular basis and I hope to be covering the Clippers and Angels march to the playoffs when they do resume.

The Yahoo! Groups home to the CPD and APD will be set read-only until such time as I can effectively moderate them again.  I would suggest that you change your Group Settings to "Special Announcement" so that you know when publication resumes.  Angel fans can do this now; Clipper fans can do this Saturday, 1 December.  I might be able to eek out a couple of editions until then.  (Just don't plan on it.)

Anyone interested in reaching me via email, use the owner's address which appears at the bottom of this e-mail as well as on the home page for both Yahoo! groups.

Meanwhile, thanks for letting me be part of your day.

I shall return!!

Clippers Fire Past Rockets to Stop Skid

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25 (Ticker) -- Lamar Odom is not the bad luck charm of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Odom finally contributed to a win, scoring 16 points and playing solid defense as the Clippers opened a big lead and held on for a 90-83 victory over the Houston Rockets.

The Clippers had lost three in a row, two since Odom returned from an eight-game suspension for violation of the NBA's anti-drug program. Prior to his ban, the Clippers had dropped their first three games with Odom in the starting lineup.

Odom has returned as a reserve and had not played well. But the 6-10 forward sparked the Clippers after coming off the bench in the first period and had a big steal and block down the stretch.

Elton Brand scored 21 points and Jeff McInnis added 13 for the Clippers (6-8), who saw a 21-point lead cut to 78-76 with just under eight minutes remaining. But they regrouped and improved to 6-4 at home.

Steve Francis scored 17 points before leaving with a sore left foot for the Rockets, who have lost six of their last eight games. Francis sat out Friday's loss at Seattle with the same injury.
LOS ANGELES (AP) —

Elton Brand scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Houston Rockets 90-83 Sunday.

Brand reached the 20-point plateau for the 10th consecutive game and Lamar Odom added 16 points to send Houston to its sixth loss in eight games.

The Rockets have lost four straight for the first time since dropping six in a row last December.

Houston's leading scorer Steve Francis, who missed the previous game because of a sore left foot, fell on a drive to the basket and struck his head against teammate Kevin Willis' left knee with 3:51 left in the third quarter.

Francis returned briefly, but left for good with 18 seconds left in the period. He finished with a team-high 17 points.

Houston forward Glen Rice, who played 24 scoreless minutes in Friday's loss at Seattle, keyed a 14-0 run with a pair of 3-pointers, an 11-footer and a layup as the Rockets sliced a 21-point second-quarter deficit to 58-53 with six minutes left in the third.

Rice opened the fourth quarter with another 3-pointer, and the Rockets narrowed the gap to 78-76 with a 3-pointer by Walt Williams and a 15-footer by Cuttino Mobley with 7:47 to play.

But they got no closer, as Michael Olowokandi tipped in a missed 17-footer by Jeff McInnis, and Corey Maggette sank two free throws for a 90-83 cushion with 1:13 left.

After Maggette and Eric Piatkowski were taken out with two early fouls each, Los Angeles held Houston without a field goal for 5 1/2 minutes and forced four turnovers during a 16-0 run that built their lead to 35-16 with 11:27 left in the second quarter.

Odom, not starting for the third straight time since his eight-game suspension, made five of his first seven shots. None of his teammates reached double digits until Brand's layup with five minutes left in the third.

Mobley, the Rockets' second-leading scorer, was 0-for-5 in the first half and finished with 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting.

Notes: The Clippers have had at least one 20-point scorer in each of their first 14 games. It's their longest such streak since the 1993-94 season, when they had stretches of 30 and 32 games. Last season, their longest streak of games with at least one 20-point scorer was seven. ... In the six meetings between Brand and Francis since they were chosen 1-2 in the 1999 draft, Francis is 5-1. ... The Clippers won for the first time in six games this season with Odom in the lineup. ... The Clippers have beaten the Rockets in four of five meetings, after losing 29 of 32. The Rockets lost the season series last season (3-1) for the first time since 1984-85.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) -

Elton Brand scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Clippers over the Houston Rockets, 90-83. Jeff McInnis added 13 points and a game-high eight assists for the Clippers, who snapped a three-game slide.

Steve Francis finished with 17 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Rockets, who have lost six of their last eight games.

In the fourth quarter, the Rockets cut the Clipper lead to 78-76 with 7:47 remaining in the game on a Cuttino Mobley jumper. However, that was the closest the Rockets would get to the lead.

With 2:02 remaining, Michael Olowokandi scored on a tip-in to increase the Clipper lead to 88-83 lead. Then with 1:13 left, Corey Maggette sank two foul shots to put the Clippers up 90-83.

The Clippers shot 52 percent from the field, while the Rockets were 44 percent from the field.

Mobley hit two foul shots with 3:33 left in the first quarter to pull the Rockets to within three points, 19-16. However, on the next Clipper possession, Quentin Richardson nailed a three-pointer which began a 12-0 Clipper run to close out the opening quarter.

The Clippers once led by 21 points in the second quarter, but Houston scored the final eight points before the half to cut the Clipper lead to 50-37.

The Rockets turned the ball over 11 times in the first half and shot only 36 percent from the field. The Clippers finished the half at 56 percent from the field.

Francis led all first-half scorers with 12 points for the Rockets.

In the third quarter, the Rockets produced a 14-0 run to cut the Clipper advantage to 58-53. Lamar Odom hit a jumper for the Clippers with 5:40 left in the third quarter to end the run and put the Clippers back up by seven points.

With one second left in the third quarter, Moochie Norris hit a three-pointer for the Rockets, who still trailed 72-63 heading into the final 12 minutes.

Odom had 16 points off the bench for the Clippers.

Game Notes

The Clippers outscored the Rockets, 48-32, in the paint...The Clippers had nine blocked shots, three by Odom...Houston still leads the all-time series. 86-50...The Clippers are 6-4 at home this season and are 3-6 overall against the West...The Rockets fell to 2-5 on the road.

Odom yet to be involved in a victory
November 24, 2001

Joe Stevens
Long Beach Press-Telegram

  • Speak out: Clippers message board

The NBA finally released Lamar Odom from his suspension for violating the league's anti-drug policy. After his second suspension in eight months, Odom missed eight games, lost about $250,000 in salary and was the butt of many jokes throughout the league.

With Odom back, the Clippers promptly played their ugliest game of the season. They lost to the Nets on Thanksgiving, even though New Jersey shot a dismal 38.6 percent and 64.1 percent from the free-throw line.

It is not Odom's fault, but many of the Clippers' weaknesses have been exposed with him in the lineup. They are 0-5 with Odom, and 5-3 without him. Most games this season have followed suit. If the Clippers were supposed to win, they won. If the Clippers were supposed to lose, they lost. Odom was in two games --- Golden State at home and New Jersey at home after an overtime game the previous night --- in which they should have won.

First off, any notion that the Clippers are better without Odom is wrong. However, the Clippers have played better without him. There is a distinction.

Odom should help the team eventually, and he will. It just hasn't happened yet.

One big weakness exposed with Odom playing is the Clippers' lack of outside shooting. Odom has shot 31.5 percent (23-of-73) in his five games. He may not be the answer for an outside shooter.

Eric Piatkowski is a proven outside threat, but beyond that, the Clippers don't have anyone consistent. Jeff McInnis has his moments, but is streaky. Quentin Richardson has shown some promise, but his strength is to score underneath and drive to the basket.

In successive losses to the Lakers and Nets, the Clippers shot 3-of-32 (9.3 percent) from 3-point range.

Youth and inexperience still is another problem. The Clippers' ball movement has been atrocious in a few games. Shot selection has been worse. Perhaps that all goes back to youth and not knowing the game that well.

With Odom back, a few players stand to get less minutes. They might try to do too much when they finally get time, and thus, they might not play intelligently. Sometimes, Odom plays too emotional, and other players do that, too.

Watching the Clippers can be enjoyable because they are one of the most athletic teams in the league. On the other hand, watching them can be extremely frustrating because while they have that athleticism, it doesn't always translate to good basketball.

The Clippers are the youngest team in the NBA, and six of their main players went to the league without finishing college. They do a lot on instinct alone, but that won't get them far in the NBA.

    POSITIONAL ANALYSIS

Point guard: With Keyon Dooling hurt, 5-5 Earl Boykins has stepped in as a solid backup to McInnis. The two, however, haven't been shooting well, and their assist tally isn't too high, either. Boykins creates offense, but can be a liability on defense. GRADE: C.

Shooting guard: Piatkowski hasn't been making his outside shots lately, and he must. Otherwise, there is no great reason to play him. Richardson has been a force off the bench. GRADE: B-.

Small forward: Odom's shooting woes continue. Corey Maggette is starting, but Odom already is getting many more minutes than his fill in. But Maggette has played much more solid and consistent than Odom so far this season. GRADE: C.

Power forward: Steady and reliable, Elton Brand obviously has been the best thing about the Clippers this season. He plays like a leader, talks like a leader and appears to think like a leader. He's the only consistent go-to guy. GRADE: A-.

Center: Pretty much all of Michael Olowokandi's numbers are down this season, including points and rebounds. Sure, there is a lack of centers of his ability in the league, but he isn't even getting extended minutes to show what he can do. GRADE: C-.

Bench: Sean Rooks had a solid night in a recent loss to the Lakers and displayed his outside shot. Darius Miles also has had some good nights off the bench and has gotten extended minutes. If Maggette is relegated to the bench, expect him to continue to play strong defense and add some offense. GRADE: B.

Coaching: It's almost a month into the season, and the Clippers have yet to steal a game. Fourth-quarter implosions continue. Plus, the players have been jarring with officials too much, and that has been a big distraction. Isn't it the coaching staff's responsibility to make it abundantly clear that the players shouldn't do that? GRADE: C-.

    INJURY REPORT

PG Keyon Dooling: high left ankle sprain (Nov.14)
Analysis: The severe sprain is expected to keep Dooling out six to eight weeks, not four to six weeks as previously expected. He is on crutches and can't put weight on his foot. Boykins is getting most of his minutes.

    SEE A DIFFERENT GAME

The defensive matchups that the Clippers have thrown at opponents have been relatively effective. But when they're not effectively, see how long it takes Gentry to make an adjustment. Sometimes, it's extremely quick. Other times, the match-up goes on too long.

In three recent games, the key defensive match ups worked well. Maggette guarded Vince Carter, Latrell Sprewell and Kobe Bryant. He contained all of them and completely shut down Carter in the fourth quarter.

The other night, though, the 6-6 Maggette had his hands full with 6-10 Keith Van Horn. The New Jersey forward was just too big for Maggette. It took awhile until 6-9 Darius Miles got on him. Odom also tried his hands with Van Horn, but wasn't too effective.

There are not many defensive statistics that accurately measure defense. One that Gentry likes to look at is the offense of the opponents' star. If Carter scored 29 points, but has more than 29 shots, it would be considered a success. The other night, Van Horn scored 34 points, but only had 21 shots. That shows the Clippers' defense wasn't there.

Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) -

Karl Malone scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz over the Los Angeles Clippers 106-101 at the Delta Center. The Jazz snapped a two-game slide, while the Clippers have lost three straight.

John Stockton had 17 points in the second half and finished with 21 points, while Donyell Marshall added 20.

Elton Brand led the Clippers with 28 points while Jeff McInnis had 22 and Corey Maggette scored 17.

The Clippers have lost 11 in a row to the Jazz and extended their losing streak in Salt Lake City to 25 straight dating to April 18, 1989.

Stockton broke a 101-101 tie with 35 seconds left by blowing past McInnis for layup.

Scott Padgett made three-of-four free throws in the last 21 seconds to give Utah the 106-101 advantage.

Utah opened the final quarter with a 14-8 run to cut the Clippers lead to 94-92. Padgett drained a three to make it a two point game with 6:00 to play.

Stockton and Marshall drilled back-to-back jumpers to tie the game at 99-99 with 3:36 left in the contest.

Marshall hit a short jumper with 1:10 left to give Utah a 101-99 advantage, then Eric Piatkowski hit two free throws to even the score at 101-101.

The Clippers jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the first behind seven points from Brand.

Malone made a layup with 2 seconds left in the opening period, cutting the Clippers lead to 31-23.

Utah opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run to get to within one at 34-33. Marshall hit a short jumper, scored on a dunk and put in two free throws to highlight the spurt.

The Jazz outscored the Clippers 29-23 in the second to make it 54-52 in favor of Los Angeles at the half.

The Clippers went on a 10-2 run to move ahead 78-68 with 3:45 to play in the third. Maggette hit a jump shot from inside the paint and then stole the ball and went the length of the court for a two-handed dunk. Brand followed with a baseline jumper to cap the surge.

McInnis hit a leaner inside the lane to give the Clippers their largest lead at 82-70 with 2:15 left in the third.

John Crotty hit one from beyond the arc, capping an 8-2 Jazz run and cutting the Clippers lead to 84-78.

Lamar Odom nailed a 12-foot jumper at the end of the third to make 86-78 going into the final quarter.

    Game Notes

The Jazz improved to 3-4 at home this season...Utah leads the all-time series 70-50...Brand scored at least 20 points for the ninth straight game...The Clippers drop to 0-4 on the road this season.

Jazz Put Clamps On Clips Yet Again

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 23 (Ticker) -- John Stockton and the Utah Jazz aren't what they once were, but they still have enough to beat the Los Angeles Clippers at home.

Stockton made the go-ahead basket with 38 seconds left and the Jazz played suffocating defense down the stretch as they rallied for a 106-101 victory over the Clippers, who still never have won in the Delta Center.

Stockton scored a season-high 21 points but none more important than his driving layup that snapped a 101-101 tie. He set up the patented pick-and-roll with Karl Malone and dribbled quickly to the hoop when the defense shaded toward Malone.

Lamar Odom missed a 3-pointer and the Clippers fouled Scott Padgett, who made 1-of-2 free throws with 20 seconds to play. After a timeout, Jeff McInnis tried to work along the right side but was pressured by Stockton and dribbled off his foot and out of bounds with 16 seconds to go.

Padgett made two more free throws following a near steal by the Clippers, who fell to 0-21 all-time at the Delta Center. Los Angeles has lost 25 in a row at Utah since a win at the old Salt Palace on April 18, 1989.

Malone scored 24 points and Donyell Marshall added 20 for the Jazz, who did not allow a basket in the final 4 1/2 minutes and beat the Clippers for the 11th straight time overall.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- John Stockton scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half, leading a rally from an 11-point deficit as the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 106-101 Friday night.

Karl Malone scored 24 and Donyell Marshall had 20, including a layup on a feed from Stockton to put Utah ahead for good at 101-99. Scott Padgett went 3-of-4 on free throws in the final 21 seconds to preserve the victory.

For a change, the Jazz were still fresh in the fourth quarter and they responded by outscoring Los Angeles 28-15.

The Clippers led 83-72 after Corey Maggette hit a free throw with 1:57 remaining in the third. But the 39-year-old Stockton and 38-year-old Malone spent much of the late third and early fourth quarters on the bench, and they were ready to go when coach Jerry Sloan called on them later.

Elton Brand led the Clippers with 28 points while Jeff McInnis had 22 and Maggette scored 17.

The Clippers came frustratingly close to ending a 10-game losing streak to Utah, extending their streak in Salt Lake City to 25 straight dating to April 18, 1989.

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) -

Keith Van Horn poured in a season-high 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the New Jersey Nets to a 95-90 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Jason Kidd added 16 points, 12 boards and 11 assists for his first triple double of the season as the Nets won for the second straight game.

Lucious Harris added 19 points for the Nets, who at 9-3 are off to the best start in franchise history.

Elton Brand had 23 points and 16 rebounds for the Clippers, who have lost back-to-back games for the first time this year. Quentin Richardson added 20 points in the loss.

Clippers forward Lamar Odom, who was suspended for eight games by the NBA for violating the league's anti-drug policy, was playing in his first game since being reinstated by the league on Wednesday. Odom finished with seven points and six assists, but fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

New Jersey held a 71-62 lead with 2:24 left in third, but the Clippers scored the next 11 points to take a 73-71 lead with 9:57 left in the fourth quarter. Brand and Richardson each had four points in the spurt.

However, the Nets answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Van Horn hit a jumper to start the run with 8:01 left in the first and gave the Nets a 79-73 lead with a free throw with 6:16 remaining. His jumper to start the string was New Jersey's first field goal since 3:32 of the third quarter.

The Clippers outscored New Jersey 17-16 the rest of the way, but were unable to get the lead under three. Kidd was 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final minute and 10-for-10 overall.

The Clippers held a 19-16 lead with 3:13 left in the first, but New Jersey closed the quarter with an 11-2 run. Van Horn led the Nets with 15 points in the quarter, while Michael Olowokandi and Jeff McInnis paced the Clippers with six points apiece.

LA outscored the Nets 23-22 in the second quarter, but New Jersey held a 49-44 lead at the half.

The Nets went on an 11-0 run early in the third quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 60-45 with 8:43 left. Van Horn had two, three-pointers in the stretch.

    Game Notes

Kidd's triple-double was the 39th of his career..The Nets outrebounded the Clippers 53-43...Nets forward Richard Jefferson and guard Kerry Kittles left the game in the second quarter with injuries and did not return. Jefferson injured his left knee, while Kittles left with a strained left side...The Clippers were 2-for-17 from three-point range and are just 3-for-32 (9.37- percent) from beyond the arc in their last two games.

    Kidd Clutch in Checking Clippers

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 22 (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd is getting used to being in clutch situations on the New Jersey Nets' current road trip.

Kidd recorded his first triple-double as a Net and Keith Van Horn scored 34 points to lift New Jersey to a 95-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, who played with Lamar Odom for the first time in nine games.

Kidd finished with 16 points, 11 assists and 12 boards for his 39th career triple-double. He made all 10 free throws, including eight in the final 37 seconds, as the Nets held off a late rally.

It was Kidd who came up with clutch shots earlier in the road trip. He nailed a 3-pointer that forced overtime in a loss at Denver on Monday and sent New Jersey's game with Utah on Wednesday into an extra session with another 3-pointer.

New Jersey scored eight straight points to take the lead for good at 79-73 with 6:16 to play. Van Horn had three points in the run that saw Los Angeles go without a point for more than five minutes.

The Clippers closed within three points three times in the final 30 seconds but Kidd answered with a pair of free throws on each occasion.

Elton Brand collected 23 points and 16 rebounds to lead Los Angeles. Odom came off the bench in his first game since being suspended for violating the league's substance abuse policy and scored seven points on 3-of-10 shooting.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Keith Van Horn scored 34 points and Jason Kidd had a triple-double Thursday night to lead the New Jersey Nets to a 95-90 victory over the Clippers, as Lamar Odom ended his eight-game suspension with a quiet return for Los Angeles.

Kidd made eight consecutive free throws in the final 37 seconds. He had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his 39th career triple-double, most among active players.

Van Horn, often guarded by Odom, went 12-of-21 from the floor and also had 12 rebounds to help the Nets to extend their franchise-best start to 9-3.

Lucious Harris added 19 points, and Todd McCulloch had 12 rebounds.

Elton Brand led Los Angeles with 23 points and 16 rebounds, and Quentin Richardson had 20 points.

Odom, suspended by the NBA on Nov. 5 for violating its substance-abuse policy for the second time in eight months, made his first three shots but missed all seven he took after that. He scored seven points and had six assists.

He did not start, but first entered the game -- to scattered cheering from the crowd of 13,172 -- with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter and played 27 minutes.

Down by 15 early in the third quarter, the Clippers went ahead 73-71 two minutes in the fourth. But Van Horn then started an 8-0 run with a 20-foot jumper and the Nets opened an 82-75 lead with 5:03 remaining. They led the rest of the way.

The Clippers (5-7) went 5-3 during Odom's suspension and are winless in the four games he's played.

New Jersey played the second half without Kerry Kittles and Richard Jefferson, each of whom left with injuries in the second quarter. Kittles went out with a strained muscle in his left side, and Jefferson left with an injured left knee.

Odom's suspension, which called for a minimum of five games out of the lineup, was the second for the 22-year-old forward. After this one came down, he tearfully admitted at a news conference that he had used marijuana.

The league finally lifted the suspension, which cost Odom some $250,000 of salary, on Wednesday.

The Nets led 60-45 early in the third quarter, but Brand scored nine points over the last eight minutes of the period as the Clippers narrowed the gap to 71-66 heading into the fourth.

Harris gave the Nets a spark off the bench during the second quarter, making his first five shots and scoring 12 points as New Jersey led 49-44 at halftime. Van Horn had 17 first-half points, but just two in the second quarter.

Brand had nine points in the first two periods for the Clippers, who had 10 players score in the first half.

Van Horn made six of his first nine shots and scored 15 points to help the Nets take a 27-21 lead.

    Notes

Odom, the Clippers' leading scorer last season, had 29 points, seven rebounds and three blocks against the Nets last season, although New Jersey won both meetings. ... Los Angeles was 1-4 during Odom's five-game suspension last March. ... The Nets were coming off an overtime win at Utah a night earlier, when Van Horn hit a jumper with 2.3 seconds left for a 90-89 victory.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Keith Van Horn scored 34 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Jason Kidd recorded his first triple-double as a Net to lead New Jersey to a 95-90 win over the Clippers.

Kidd had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his 39th career triple-double, tops among active players.

Lucious Harris added 19 points off the bench and Kenyon Martin chipped in with 16 as the exciting young Nets improved to 9-3.

"He just motivates everybody," Harris said of Kidd. "He never stops. His confidence is real high and he makes everybody better around him."

The Clippers kept it close throughout, closing within three points three times in the final 30 seconds. But Kidd, who was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line, made eight free throws in the final 37 seconds to hold the Clippers at bay.

Elton Brand had 23 points and 16 rebounds and Quentin Richardson added 20 points to lead Los Angeles.
