| LOS ANGELES (Ticker) — While the Los Angeles Lakers are going for a "three-peat," they made sure three straight of a different kind did not happen. Shaquille O'Neal had 28 points and 15 rebounds as the Lakers dominated the second half and avoided a three-game slide with a 110-80 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers. The Lakers have not lost three straight since December 1998 and coach Phil Jackson has not endured a three-game skid since his Chicago Bulls dropped four straight from January 13-16, 1995, a period when Michael Jordan was not with the team. The Clippers played well in a competitive first half and held a 48-44 lead at halftime. They were ahead, 55-49, in the third quarter before the Lakers finally took control. Kobe Bryant had two free throws as the Lakers used a 23-7 run for a 72-62 lead. A basket by O'Neal and a jumper by Derek Fisher pulled the Lakers into a 59-59 tie with just over four minutes left in the quarter. A free throw by O'Neal gave the Lakers the lead for good and Fisher added a 3-pointer for a 65-61 edge with 2:27 left. Bryant's reverse layup capped the spurt. Things got out of hand in the fourth quarter as the Lakers outscored the Clippers, 38-15. The Lakers made 14-of-23 shots in the period while the Clippers struggled to make 6-of-23. Lamar Odom scored 17 points and Jeff McInnis added 15 for the Clippers (12-11), who failed to go three games over .500 for the first time since being 6-3 on November 17, 1995. |

By KEN PETERS Shaquille O'Neal had 28 points and 15 rebounds and Kobe Bryant scored 25 points with seven assists Friday night as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Los Angeles Clippers 110-80 to snap a two-game losing streak. The victory also kept a streak going for Lakers coach Phil Jackson -- his teams haven't lost three in a row since January 1995, when he was coaching Chicago and Michael Jordan was playing baseball. The loss snapped a three-game win streak by the Clippers (12-11). They were coming off a 114-94 blowout of Seattle on Wednesday, a night after the SuperSonics beat the Lakers 104-93. The Lakers led 72-65 to start the final period and then pulled away. Although both teams play at Staples Center, the Lakers were the home team and dropped the Clippers' road record to 0-6. No Charges Filed Against Olowokandi | ||
| LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Clippers center Michael Olowokandi will not be charged in a skirmish with a former girlfriend, the district attorney's office said Friday. "We reviewed the case and determined there is insufficient evidence to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt, so we are not prosecuting," said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the district attorney. Olowokandi said he was pleased with the result and that "the whole issue has gone through the hands of the D.A.," but added that he believed the way his case was handled by police was ``definitely disturbing.'' He thought it was unfair that the case even went as far as it did, believing it was because he is a pro athlete. "I'm not trying to cry victim, but with my name out there, it drew a lot of publicity," he said Friday night before the Clippers' game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "I definitely object to the way it was handled." Olowokandi, 26, was booked on Dec. 1 for investigation of three felony charges — assault, robbery and false imprisonment — and freed on $50,000 bail. Gibbons said the district attorney was asked only to file on the assault or spousal abuse allegation. Shortly after Olowokandi was arrested, former girlfriend Suzanne Ketcham recanted her claims and said she was the aggressor during a fight at the athlete's Manhattan Beach home. Ketcham said she became jealous when she saw him with another woman. Olowokandi, the overall No. 1 selection in the 1998 NBA draft, said he had witnesses and his attorney proclaimed his innocence, but detectives presented the case because they said they had strong physical evidence. | ||
