Big start, big plays key victoryZac Jackson, Staff Writer
08.22.2009
Joshua Cribbs will sleep well tonight.
Eric Mangini will probably sleep a little better than he did a week ago, too.
With the do-it-all Cribbs doing a little bit of everything, the Browns jumped
all over the Lions early Saturday night. It wasn't all smooth sailing from
there, but the Browns were much better than they were last week and much better
than the Lions for most of the night in what became a 27-10 victory.
The Browns opened the game with a seven-play, 74-yard scoring drive and got
their first points of the preseason when Jamal Lewis scored from 4 yards out to
cap the opening drive. James Davis took off an 81-yard touchdown sprint late in
the third quarter to complete the scoring.
Cribbs finished with 135 all-purpose yards. That doesn't include his 95-yard,
game-opening kick return that was called back by penalty. And all of those came
in the first quarter.
"You obviously appreciate what he can do," Mangini said. "Those are huge
momentum plays."
It was 20-0 after that first quarter. The Lions didn't get a first down until
almost 12 minutes had elapsed and didn't score until the final play of the first
half when a William James interception off a deflection set up Swayze Harris'
51-yard field goal.
The Browns still had more penalties (11 for 85 yards) than Mangini wished to
see, and the turnover was the only reason the Lions were able to get on the
first-half scoreboard. But the coach saw progress.
"It was nice to get the win, and it was nice to see the potential we have if
these guys are able to play good, solid, disciplined and complementary
football," Mangini said. "We left some plays out there, and those things have to
be corrected."
Derek Anderson started and went 6-of-9 for 119 yards in the first quarter
including completions of 39 yards to Braylon Edwards, 24 yards to Mohamed
Massaquoi and 20 to Cribbs. He finished 8-of-13 for 130 yards and was
intercepted by William James in the closing seconds of the first half on a pass
that went off Davis' hands and led to the field goal that provided the Lions'
first points.
"There are a couple throws I wish I had back," Anderson said. "I have to give
J.D. a better ball there.
"Overall I thought things went well. I got in a little rhythm and we got a
little sweat going out there. Guys caught the ball well. I felt good."
Davis woke the Browns from a third-quarter lull when he found a little room off
left tackle, made two Lions miss and took off up the sideline for a first
professional score he won't forget.
"I was just looking for flags," Davis said. "When the guys came down and
celebrated, I figured there weren't any. It was a good way to keep things
going."
Both teams are now 1-1 in the preseason.
Eric Wright intercepted Matthew Stafford on the Lions' first play from scrimmage
and returned it to the 5-yard line, but the Browns started from the 20 after
Wright was penalized for excessive celebration and ended up settling for a Phil
Dawson field goal.
Brady Quinn went 3-of-5 for 29 yards in the second quarter. Lewis finished with
23 yards on 7 carries.
Davis led all rushers with 12 carries for 116 yards.
It was an encouraging night for the Browns' defense as well. The Lions got only
113 yards of total offense in the first half and went 3-of-9 on third down
during that time.
For the game, the Browns outrushed the Lions, 194-102, and won the total yardage
battle, 348-288.
"I liked what I saw from the run defense," Mangini said. "They had some plays
where I thought they piled up more yardage than they should have but if we play
team defense I think we can cut those down."

CLEVELAND BROWNS 2009 PREVIEW

Give the Dog Pound a bone! After the 2008 season which saw the Browns go
4-12, it was time for a change. That change comes in the form of former
New York Jets coach Eric Mangini. Eric Mangini comes in with a chip on
his shoulder after being canned from the Jets after a 9-7 season with
Brett Favre at quarterback. Cleveland has gone through an emotional
situation at quarterback when locker room favorite Derek Anderson was
replaced with draft choice and hometown boy Brady Quinn. Quinn played
decent football but not enough to light up the score board and fully
gain the confidence of his team as the leader. Cleveland was absolutely
terrible against the spread in 2008 going 6-9-1 for a 40% ATS record.
With such ineptitude on offense the UNDER was obviously the primary
wager cashing in 60% of the time.

This football team was very inept offensively only average
14ppg. Don't expect much to change going into 2009. Coach Eric
Mangini and the management team of the Browns have gutted the entire
roster and replaced it with similar quality players. The Browns let go
of LB Andra Davis, LB Willie McGinest, S Sean Jones, WR Joe Jurevicius,
TE Kellen Winslow Jr. and OT Kevin Shaffer. These were some of the most
quality talent on their roster. They were able to fill these positions
with players like LB Eric Barton, DE Kenyon Coleman, WR Mike Furrey, WR
David Patten, and LB Bo Ruud. Their will be many issues with this
football team going into 2009 including the consistency and play of
Brady Quinn. His play will solely rest on the quality of protection he
gets from his offensive line. This offensive line going into 2009 will
be average at best which doesn't spell well for a mediocre running
game. Be sure to look for many teams to double on Braylon Edwards which
will give an opportunity for a secondary receiver to step up. Can you
really trust Mike Furrey or David Patten to step up with out a quality
TE running down the middle to occupy a safety or linebacker? We
don't think so. Other issues with this football team are its
defensive line and defensive backfield. It does not look as if the
Browns will be able to find consistency in rushing the quarterback and
stopping the pass with the below average unit they are going to be
fielding in 2009. Look for this football team to struggle in Eric
Mangini's first season as Browns head coach.

POWER RATING

13 D-

The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The bad
news is that they have to play the Minnesota Vikings in week 1. The
numbers are looking to be in the favor of your wallet if you are looking
to wager this game. The line given by many sports books is Minnesota -3.
There is value here due to Minnesota having such a strong running game
and a solid defensive unit. It really doesn't matter who starts for
the Vikings at quarterback, Favre, Jackson or Rosenfels. Look for the
strong possibility for this week 1 number to jump heavily.

Key Roster Additions: LB Eric Barton, DE Kenyon Coleman, WR Mike Furrey,
LB Bo Ruud

Key Roster Subtractions: LB Andra Davis, S Sean Jones, WR Joe
Jurevicius, LB Willie McGinest, TE Kellen Winslow, T Kevin Shaffer

WEEK 1 OPENING LINE: Minnesota @ Cleveland (+3)

An inside look at Browns offseason workouts

As the Browns congregated for their mandatory weekend minicamp on Thursday, it
started with new coach Eric Mangini making quite a statement.
Rain? Practice still takes place — outside.
The mandatory minicamp follows after a few months of voluntary minicamps and
organized team activities.
NoLogoNeeded.com has contacted a source that has first-hand accounts of the
Browns' offseason workouts. The following notes are their observations. Our
source asked to remain anonymous and we will respect that request.
Want some insight on what has been going on in Berea?
Click "Read More"

Receivers, Receivers, Receivers Everywhere
Brian Robiskie has come as advertised.  He has looked impressive in drills and
practices.  The Browns finally have a receiver with sure hands.  However, he
is not going to outrun anyone.  He should make a fine possession receiver.
After Robiskie, it gets bad. Don’t count on Braylon Edwards making a
transformation back into his 2007 form.  At these off season practices, he
continues to struggle catching the ball.  During the drills,  the Browns ran
three straight plays to him.  The end result: Braylon dropped all three
balls.  On a brighter side, he did make a couple catches in the 7-on-7 and team
workouts.

Mohamed Massaquoi may be following in Edwards’ footsteps.  Massaquoi is the
most impressive receiver on the field through the team’s drills.  The problem
comes when the action goes live, as he develops a case of the “Edwardses”
and bobbles or drops most passes that come his way.

Look for undrafted rookie Jordan Norwood to be this year’s training camp
darling, a la Frisman Jackson, Kevin Kasper and Jamel White.  Norwood has
tremendous speed and quickness.  It's impressive how much faster he seems than
everyone else out on the field.  Norwood gets most of his work on special
teams, but also gets noticed in limited reps at receiver.

Much has been made recently over the veteran leadership that David Patten could
provide to his younger teammates.  He may only be providing this leadership in
the offseason though, as he doesn’t receive many reps or make many big plays
at the practices.

Veteran receiver Mike Furrey has been impressive in his time on the field.  His
problem is that he is already in his 30s and it may come down to a numbers
game.  The Browns will most likely carry five receivers and Edwards, Robiskie,
Massaquoi, and Cribbs most likely have already secured their place on the
team.  That means that Furrey, Patten, Norwood, Syndric Steptoe, Paul Hubbard,
Lance Legget, and Devale Ellis all get to battle it out over 1-2 roster spots.
Legget has started to separate himself from the others lately running crisp
routes and actually catching most passes thrown to him.

On to the quarterback competition
For those who believe that the Browns acquired former Jet Brett Ratliff to be a
dark horse in the quarterback competition, don’t count on it.  Ratliff looks
to be a Ken Dorsey or Ty Detmer type of player.  He has a good understanding of
the new offense, but severely lacks any type of arm strength whatsoever.  His
arm is noticeably weaker than that of any of the other quarterbacks including
Quinn and Richard Bartell.

Quinn appears to be in the lead to be the starter over Anderson.  Quinn
receives around 25 to 30 reps, Anderson gets about 20 reps and then Bartell and
Ratliff each get about five.  The problem, though, is that neither Quinn nor
Anderson has looked impressive.  Both quarterbacks have struggled with erratic
throws and under the pressure of learning the new system.  Mangini mentioned in
his press conference that this was partially due to receivers not running
correct or crisp routes.  However, the throws have been erratic enough that
this will not make much of a difference.

It appears that Anderson has been picking up the offense better than Quinn.
Quinn seems to have trouble understanding offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and
getting the plays called and executed correctly, while Anderson goes out and
runs the play.

Offensive Line
Alex Mack will be the day one starter at center. Mack gets the majority of reps
at center and that Hank Fraley gets the rest.  In drills and in play without
pads, Mack may have the best footwork on the offensive line.

Although Charles Ali plays fullback, he is in this section because of his
size.  Ali has shown up to the OTA’s with a few extra pounds and out of
shape.  He is constantly needing a break and sucking air.  You wouldn’t know
it looking at his shorts, which appear to be three sizes to large. However, this
causes the coaches and teammates to holler at him to pull up his shorts that
continue to drop as he runs.

Linebackers
Last season’s top draft pick (fourth round), Beau Bell, has been having a
rough go at it.  Bell doesn’t seem to be understanding the defense or special
teams.  He is constantly in the wrong place and on the wrong end of the
coach’s wrath.  Don’t look for much contribution from this draft pick again
this year.
David Veikune looks pretty impressive, but the players are not in pads, so this
could change.  But for now at least there is a positive sign.

Alex Hall and Kamerion Wimbley are big question marks at linebacker.
Hopefully, Alex Hall will be able to hold up against the run and develop into a
three-down player.  Wimbley appears to be the same old “One Move Wimbley”
we have seen.

On a positive note, David Bowens looks good.  Although again, this could be
because he knows the system and practice is without pads.

D-Line
One of the best sights is Robaire Smith going through drills. The defensive line
should be much improved if Smith can return to form. Shaun Rogers looks like
Shaun Rogers again, which is good news.

Defensive Backs
There are plenty of numbers for competition at cornerback, after the top three
(Wright, McDonald and Hood) there just isn’t much talent.  Corey Ivy has been
getting most of the work as the fourth corner, but hasn’t done much to keep
it.

Rookie Don Carey has been getting some hype for his interceptions, but usually
runs with lower-level talent.

The other sixth round pick, Coye Francies, will be in big trouble when cuts
start rolling around this summer.  He has some time yet to pick it up, but he
has been burned on a consistent basis.

Coaching Staff
So how involved is Mangini in these practices?  Mangini is letting his coaches
coach.  He stands off by himself in these practices and tells the ma with the
air horn when he has seen enough and to let everyone know it is time to go to
the next drill. He is definitely the man in charge, but he seems to stay out of
the spotlight. He, along with the entire rest of the coaching staff, also
hollers “Stay up!” and “Keep’em off the ground” nearly every play. At
least he's interested in keeping his guys healthy enough to get to preseason.

COLUMBIANA - Football has comeback to the area.
On a dreary day, preparations began for the 30th Annual Penn-Ohio Stateline
Classic.
Practicing in a light rain at Firestone Park in Columbiana, the Ohio team - led
by Poland coach Mark Brungard - went through position drills and got an
introduction to it's offensive and defensive schemes.
With Brungard, an offensive minded coach, calling the plays, the Ohio offense
will surely be explosive.
The only two local teammates to be included on the team's 36-man roster are
Southern's Nathan Melhorn (running back) and Tony Pastore (offensive lineman).
Other local players participating in the game include: East Palestine's Tom Delo
(linebacker), Edison's Jesse Byron (linebacker), Matt Bolen of East Liverpool
(linebacker), Russell Paugh of Beaver Local (tight end), Wellsville's Greg
Rayburn (offensive lineman) and Lisbon's Aaron Sweeney (wide receiver).
The squad will return to practice Thursday.
The game will be played at 7:30 p.m., June 27 at Geneva College.
Tickets can be purchased at Don's Barber Shop and Sitler The Printer in
Columbiana, the Hot Dog Shoppe in East Palestine and the Sports Connection in
Salem.

Brady Quinn has leg up in QB competition; Joshua Cribbs' roles taking shape
By Mike Wilkening
May 30, 2009

 Brady Quinn (left)
and Joshua CribbsThe intrigue in the Browns’ May OTAs centered on the club’s
QB competition between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, and RS Joshua Cribbs’
contract squabble with management. Much can change by the start of training
camp, but here is what we know as summer approaches:
In the Browns’ QB derby, Quinn can safely be called the early favorite to win
the starting job, the way we hear it. It was notable that Quinn took the first
snaps with the first team at the club’s first full-squad voluntary workouts,
with head coach Eric Mangini explaining that Quinn had “done a really
outstanding job in the offseason program” and “had a little bit of an
edge.” However, Mangini has said that he plans to split the first-team reps
between Quinn and Anderson.
That said, the feeling is Quinn, who took the starting job from Anderson last
November and started three games before suffering a season-ending finger injury,
has a leg up.
There is little mystery about what Cribbs’ primary role with the club will be.
A punt and kickoff return man of the highest order and a force on the club’s
coverage units, Cribbs will continue to anchor one of the NFL’s best
special-teams units. But his role beyond that has yet to come into focus, and
whether he can successfully renegotiate his contract is a story to watch
closely.
For the time being, Mangini has said Cribbs will focus on special teams and
finding his role on offense. In his previous four NFL seasons, Cribbs
occasionally has lined up at wide receiver and quarterback. However, Cribbs, a
star quarterback at Kent State, took more snaps from center last season than he
ever had in his pro career, rushing 29 times for 167 yards and attempting four
passes. There also has been speculation that Cribbs could get some work in the
secondary, but a source close to the club believes the prospect of Cribbs
getting any regular playing time in the defensive backfield is a long shot.
There is also the issue of Cribbs’ contract, which runs through 2012. Cribbs
briefly skipped OTAs earlier in May, but he was back with the club in the final
week of May. Agent J.R. Rickert told The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer that he and
Cribbs were “optimistic that there will be a fair solution” to Cribbs’
situation.
