Sources: Crennel close to two-year extension with Browns By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

         Updated: January 28, 2008, 8:59 PM ET

The Cleveland Browns and head coach Romeo Crennel are close to finalizing a
two-year contract extension through the 2011 season, sources told ESPN.com.

Parameters for the deal were hammered out between general manager Phil Savage
and agent Joe Linta during the Senior Bowl all-star game activities in Mobile,
Ala., last week. The extension follows a turnaround season in which the Browns
posted a 10-6 record and fell just shy of earning an AFC wild-card berth.

Although some fine-tuning of a few details remains, the extension should be
completed within days and is believed to be worth about $4 million annually.

Crennel, 60, had two seasons remaining on the original five-year contract he
signed when the Browns hired him for his first NFL head coach job in 2005.

In Crennel's first two seasons, the Browns compiled a 10-22 record, with just
one divisional victory. Cleveland was 3-3 in the AFC North, and its 10-6 record
tied that of division champion Pittsburgh. But the Steelers won the divisional
tiebreaker by virtue of defeating the Browns in both meetings.

Fueled by an influx of solid, young talent and a timely decision to switch
starting quarterbacks after an opening-game loss to the Steelers, the Browns
seem to be on the right path toward achieving sustained success. The defense
still needs more quality starters, particularly in the front seven, but the
offense, which statistically ranked No. 8 in the league, has plenty of
playmakers.

Quarterback Derek Anderson, who replaced Charlie Frye after the opening-game
loss, is a player in ascendance, and tight end Kellen Winslow and wide receiver
Braylon Edwards provide excellent targets. The offensive line was also upgraded,
and first-round choice Joe Thomas quickly emerged as an outstanding left tackle.

A longtime NFL assistant, Crennel has spent much of his 26 years in the league
as a defensive coordinator. He earned five Super Bowl rings as an assistant
coach.

Senior writer Len Pasquarelli covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

I think 2-3 years is long term for a RB. We need to draft someone and hopefully
get another year out of Jamal Lewis. I agree with the 2 back offense. We need
someone like Briggs: tough, experienced...we need more veterans on D.

indybuck <no_reply@yahoogroups.com> wrote: I don't think Turner is
going to make it out of SD. Would be nice
because I don't think Jamal is the long term answer. I think he will
be good for another 2 years - maybe three. Best solution would be to
do what Jacksonville does - with a true 2 back system. It would
extend Jamal's career and give the offense another weapon.
But more than anything we have to do something about the defense.
Would love to see Briggs in a Browns uni, but I think he's gonna go
west. We could also use another receiver to expand our offensive
threat.
Next year is a really tough schedule - Colts, Titans, Jags, Texans
probably a revamped Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Not to mention a cincy
squad that ruined our playoffs hopes. Would love to see us land some
more free agents - I don't think rookies are gonna cut it.

Mel Tucker did a great job in 06 with all the injuries in the secondary. It
seems strange how Grantham was let go - it looks like a political move. Some of
the reports said that he was angling to replace Crennel if he (Romeo) was let
go.

I'm really depressed about the schedule. But then again, the rest of the
division has to play the same teams, so the goal should be the division title.

indybuck <no_reply@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

staying in house really the answer if we were so bad on D last year?
