Browns Sign Backup QB Doug Johnson 11 minutes ago

CLEVELAND - Needing a veteran quarterback as
protection for Trent Dilfer, the Cleveland
Browns signed former Atlanta backup Doug Johnson
to a one-year contract Monday.

Johnson spent last season with Tennessee. He
signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free
agent in 2000 and made 11 starts in four seasons
before being released and signed by Jacksonville.

The Browns also waived defensive lineman Larry
Burt, defensive backs Charles Byrd and Justin
Fraley, wide receivers Bradley Chavez and Bill
Flowers and running back Adimchinobe Echemandu.

Dilfer, acquired in a March trade from Seattle,
played in just 10 games the past two seasons for
the Seahawks. Before they brought in Johnson, the
Browns' only backups were Josh Harris, a
second-year player, and Charlie Frye, a rookie
drafted in April.

Johnson got his most playing time in 2003 when he
appeared in 10 games — eight starts — for the
Falcons while replacing an injured Michael Vick.
He completed 136-of-243 passes for 1,655 yards
and eight touchdowns with 12 interceptions.

Echemandu, who was selected in the seventh round
of the 2004 draft, missed the first nine games
last season with a leg injury. He had eight
carries for 25 yards in four games.

Steve Doerschuk reports:

"The young wide receiver from Michigan has been
working with the team in spring drills, but now
must turn his attention to signing a deal. He
can’t take part in training camp — the first
full-squad workout begins July 29 — until he
does.

Edwards said his agent, LaMont Smith, has had
cordial talks with Browns President John Collins
and contract expert Trip MacCracken."

Have any of our picks been signed? Don't we
have a mini-camp this week?

NFL Scout - Scout.com
May 28, 2005 at 10:42am ET
Scout.com summarizes this week's Cleveland Browns news, including
the team's possible interest in LB Peter Boulware and CB Ty Law
(pictured)...

INTEREST IN VETERANS: Browns coach Romeo Crennel is exploring the
possibilities of adding veterans Ty Law and Peter Boulware to his
inexperienced defense. Both are coming off major injuries and their
better days are behind them, but Crennel believes each could help
the Browns.

Law, 31, is the three-time Pro Bowl cornerback from the Patriots
released in late February. He is recovering from a Lis Franc injury -
- a torn ligament in the bottom of his foot. It is the same injury
that sidelined former Browns defensive end Courtney Brown for the
last 14 games of 2004.

Crennel has deep respect for Law, having been his defensive
coordinator in New England the last four years. Law made 634
tackles, 90 pass breakups and 36 interceptions over 141 games since
the Patriots drafted him in the first round out of Michigan in 1995.

"Ty knows how I feel about him and I don't think there's any
question how he feels about me," Crennel said. "His injury situation
is one that has to be resolved."

Law is able to run, but still cannot cut as well as he did prior to
the injury.

Boulware, the pass-rushing linebacker released May 9 by the Ravens,
is coming off a knee injury that cost him the final game of 2003 and
all of 2004. The Browns are interested because Boulware has 67.5
sacks in 111 games, and one thing the defense sorely lacks is a pass
rusher.

"He has experience in the 3-4 so he's familiar with the system,"
Crennel said. "Plus he's been productive in the NFL, particularly in
the pass rush. If you think he'd be a good fit on the field and in
the locker room, you go ahead and make that move. I think he could
bring a proven dimension. He'd be a plus."

The Jets, Steelers and Dolphins have shown interest in Law.

The Browns expect competition for Boulware to come from Seattle
because his brother, Michael Boulware , plays there.

WINSLOW WRAP: Though Kellen Winslow Jr. will miss the 2005 season
with a torn right ACL as a result of a motorcycle accident May 1, he
continues to work out at the Browns' training complex. Part of his
routine includes riding a stationary bike.

Former Browns great Jim Brown, now working in the players relations
department, played a role in encouraging Winslow to apologize to
fans. Winslow took the opposite approach for close to four weeks.

"The purpose was to have Kellen Jr. really state to the fans and the
organization his remorse about the mistake he made -- and there's no
question that a mistake was made," Brown said. "We in turn want to
support him in his recovery and not beat him up when he's down."

VERBA, LANG MAKE NEWS: Left tackle Ross Verba is skipping passing
camp and might sit out minicamp June 13-15 in a contract dispute.
Kenard Lang was not a regular in offseason workouts, but he is
attending passing camp. Coaches are trying to convert him from
defensive end to outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.

LESSON NOT LEARNED: On the heels of Cleveland tight end Kellen
Winslow injuring himself while riding a motorcycle, Broncos coach
Mike Shanahan warned his team about dangerous off-the-field
activities. A few days later, guard P.J. Alexander tore the ACL in
his left knee while riding an off-road four-wheel vehicle.

"I (warned the team about dangerous activities) three days before
(Alexander's injury), to give you an idea how strong my speech was,"
Shanahan said.

Alexander was supposed to compete for the starting right guard spot
with Cooper Carlisle but he will miss the entire season with the
injury.

"I don't know if he was going to tip over or something, but he put
his foot down and tore his ACL," Shanahan said. "It had nothing to
do with football."

If the Browns got just Boulware, they would be in good shape. If they
could get Law too, they would be great on D. I believe that the offense
can work if they let Dilfer throw a little bit. Even without Winslow,
there's lots of targets.

I can't wait to see Charlie Frye take some snaps (I am a former U of
Akron student).

We need some leaders on defense, and these 2 could certaintly help if
the price isn't too high. Neither one played last season, but they can
also help a lot of the young players on defense. Let's forget about the
Winslow thing and go on, we know he is an ass for what he did. We need
to talk about the players who are there and are going to contribute.

Winslow to miss '05 season with torn ACL

ESPN.com news services

CLEVELAND -- Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore the anterior
cruciate ligament in his right knee when he crashed his motorcycle,
according to several reports.

He likely will miss the entire 2005 season, sources told the
Cleveland Plain Dealer and Associated Press.

  Winslow

Winslow underwent an MRI exam on Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic,
and, according to the paper's source, it showed "what everyone
feared."

Winslow, who wrecked his high-powered bike while riding in a parking
lot on May 1, will get a second medical opinion before surgery is
scheduled, sources with knowledge of his injuries told the paper and
AP.

Although the Browns have Winslow's medical test results, the club
can not disclose the nature of his injuries because they have not
received permission from Winslow or his family.

On Wednesday, after conferring with his father, NFL Hall of Fame
tight end Kellen Winslow Sr., the Browns issued a statement
saying, "The Winslow family has not authorized us to release any
information on Kellen's condition.'"

Until they are given approval, the Browns may not be able to reveal
Winslow's injuries until he fails a physical and they have to place
him on an injury list per league rules.

Winslow's agent, Kevin Poston, could not be reached for comment.

Winslow injured his right knee and sustained unspecified internal
injuries when his motorcycle hit a curb near his home at 35 mph and
he flipped over the handlebars.

Winslow was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't fastened properly and
flew off when he hit the ground.

He spent nine days in the Cleveland Clinic before being released
last week. Winslow, who has been resting at home, has not commented
on his accident or his injuries.

Doctors had to wait for the swelling to go down on the 21-year-old's
knee before performing a more thorough examination.

Winslow, who missed 14 games as a rookie with a broken leg, breached
a hazardous activities clause in his contract by riding the
motorcycle. The Browns could ask him to return part of the money he
already has been paid as part of his six-year, $40 million contract -
- the richest deal given to a tight end.

Cleveland traded a second-round pick to move up a spot in the 2004
NFL draft to select Winslow, who starred at the University of Miami.

In his second game last season, Winslow broke a bone in the lower
part of his right leg and tore ligaments in his ankle while trying
to recover an onside kick. He had two operations on the leg and it
was still mending at the time of his accident.

Meanwhile, police in suburban Westlake concluded their investigation
of Winslow's accident this week and turned the case over to city law
director John Wheeler, who will determine whether charges should be
filed, Lt. Ray Arcuri said.

Winslow could be charged with reckless operation, which carries a
maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $250 fine.

A few hours before his accident, Winslow and a few friends drove 50
miles on their motorcycles to Canton to see a stunt riding team
perform.

Winslow might have violated NFL contract
JOE MILICIA / Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kellen Winslow Jr.'s use of a motorcycle might have
violated standard NFL contract language that prohibits players from
engaging in dangerous activities.

The Cleveland Browns could require Winslow, who lost millions last
year because of a season-ending injury, to pay back a $4.4 million
signing bonus he received in March.

The 21-year-old tight end sustained internal injuries and damage to
his right shoulder and right knee in an accident that sent him flying
over the handlebars of his newly purchased motorcycle.

Winslow was being treated at the Cleveland Clinic, where the team's
medical staff was waiting for swelling in the shoulder and knee to
subside. The team declined Tuesday to provide an update on his
condition.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the standard NFL contract forbids
players from taking part in any activity "which may involve a
significant risk of personal injury."

It's another setback for the struggling Browns and Winslow, who
entered the league last season with high expectations and a
reputation as a hothead. His rookie season ended in disappointment
when he broke his right leg during an onside kick in a Week 2 loss
against Dallas.

With his leg still on the mend, Winslow purchased a sport bike last
month and was learning how to ride it in a parking lot Sunday night
when he hit a curb and was thrown off. He complained of chest pains
after the crash.

Winslow held out last year before signing a $40 million contract - a
record for a tight end - as the No. 6 pick in the draft.

Teams have the option of making contract language regarding dangerous
activities more or less restrictive during negotiations with players,
Aiello said. The Browns wouldn't release information about Winslow's
contract.

There are a number of professional athletes who have violated
contracts by getting hurt off the job.

In June 2003, Jay Williams of the Chicago Bulls crashed his recently
bought motorcycle into a light pole, fracturing his pelvis, tearing
knee ligaments and damaging nerves in his left leg. He hasn't played
since.

The Bulls honored one year of Williams' contract even though he
violated a standard clause, then waived him in February 2004 after
reaching a settlement on the remaining two years. The buyout was
reportedly worth about $3 million.

In 1994, Ron Gant was cut by the Atlanta Braves after he broke a leg
in a motorcycle accident.

Aaron Boone was released by the New York Yankees before the 2004
season because he hurt a knee in a pickup basketball game.

Boone lost out on the majority of his $5.75 million, one-year
contract because he violated language that prohibited basketball. He
returned this season with the Cleveland Indians.

Winslow lost a $5.3 million bonus last season because of the leg
injury that dealt a severe blow to Cleveland's offense, forcing the
team to remove half its playbook.

New coach Romeo Crennel said in March that he has big plans for
Winslow in the offense. The team envisions a passing game built
around Winslow and rookie wide receiver Braylon Edwards.

Winslow, the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, dubbed himself "The
Chosen One" back in college and, during his introductory news
conference with the Browns, said he expects to exceed the
accomplishments of his father.

Winslow's ego and his fiery personality have led to some bad
decisions in the past.

Following a loss in his final season at the University of Miami,
Winslow lashed out at officials in a profanity-laced tirade that
ended with him referring to football as war and himself as a soldier.
He later apologized.

He made no apologies last season for knocking a Cleveland teammate to
the ground during a non-contact drill. Winslow remarked that the
Browns should develop more attitude and play with greater intensity.

Well it is Draft Week! Hope that the "New" management has there ducks
in a row.

Have heard the Vikings may trade up or down. Browns could be involved
in their trading up. If they do I think the Browns could get the
Vikes 12th and 25th pick, esspecially if Braylon Edwards is not at
the 3rd. Rumors aplenty there! Miami may not go for their running
back as they might get Ricky Williams back. Now thats a whole other
story!

If the Browns do pick at the three spot, EVERYONE and there brother
is say Edwards. I hope they re-think that and focus on a Tackle,
Baron comes to mind. They might be able to get him later if they
trade down. He's definitely a first round guy. So I think that the
Browns should trade down, with who, though? VIKES come to mind.

If they use the third, don't waste it! Get Braylon if he's there!

Droughns wants to restucture his contract, already! They probably
told him to wait til they sign all the new draft picks! If they use
the third pick, good luck in getting the money Bud!

Being out of football for a year thanks to foolishly following Clarett
and having not played in the cold before, I'd be more inclined to take
Braylon Edwards as much as I despise that team up north. Otherwise it
seems that since we have become the DLmen shuttle to Denver, don't we
also need DLmen that can fit a 3-4 scheme mold.

i say draft mike williams of braylon edwards early, linemen the rest of the way,
use the WR next season and show em off while observing the changes already made

I don't think you can accuse the current front office of neglecting the

The offensive line has been poor since we returned to the NFL. Why I
ask has this problem gone on for so long. I first thaought it to be
the coaching staff was defensive minded. I am not sure that is the
case. In the past dreafts they have picked possible defensive
superstars in the making who have always washed out Courtney Brown

Veteran guard to sign four-year contract
By Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com

The toll road that leads from Foxboro to
Cleveland, where former New England Patriots
defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is the new
coach, is officially open for business.

In Crennel's first free agency signing period as
Browns coach, ESPN.com has learned that veteran
guard Joe Andruzzi, who started all but three
games for New England during its run of three
Super Bowl titles in four seasons, has defected
to Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent.

Andruzzi, the first Patriot to leave to play for
Crennel, agreed Wednesday to a four-year, $9
million contract. The deal will be signed later
this week.

By acquiring Andruzzi, the Browns have begun the
refurbishing of one of the NFL's worst offensive
lines. At the combine last week in Indianapolis,
first-year general manager Phil Savage used the
term "dire straits" to describe the state of the
Browns' interior line.

Even with the addition of Andruzzi, who was a
stabilizer on New England's blocking unit when it
suffered through injuries, Cleveland will
continue to pursue veteran offensive linemen.

Andruzzi, 29, began his career as an undrafted
free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 1997.
The former Southern Connecticut State player was
signed by New England in 2000, after the Packers
released him.

A tough in-line blocker and good pass protector,
Andruzzi has started in 76 of his 95 career
appearances.

Crennel accepts offer from Browns
By Pat McManamon, Editor
February 6, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - It appears the Browns
finally have their new head coach.

The Browns offered the job to New England
defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel shortly after
Super Bowl XXXIX and he accepted.

Negotiations between the Browns and Crennel's
agent, Joe Linta, were to begin Monday at the
team's Berea, Ohio, facility.

The Browns hope to announce Crennel's hiring on
Tuesday or Wednesday, and then let him start
building a staff.

Crennel earned the offer with an impressive
interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner, team
president John Collins, and general manager Phil
Savage on Jan. 7.

"I put my best foot forward," Crennel said on
Super Bowl Media Day on Tuesday. "If their
impression was that I floored them, then that's
great."

Crennel's message?

"That I'm a capable individual and I can handle
the job," he said.

Crennel would replace Butch Davis, who resigned
in November. Crennel has been the Patriots'
defensive coordinator since 2001 and has played a
key role in New England appearing in three of the
last four Super Bowl titles.

He worked for the Browns as defensive coordinator
in 2000, and previously worked as special teams
and defensive line coach for Bill Parcells in New
York and New England. The Giants twice won Super
Bowls with Crennel as an assistant coach.

Crennel said he brings "a certain amount of NFL
winning experience" to a team.

"I've coached special teams, defensive line, been
a coordinator and been successful at all those
positions," he said. "Being able to deal with
players - I can deal with people, the media and
the whole bit. I think you will see that I can
handle myself, handle players and handle the
team."
